The lens turbo II held up very well optically in my test vs the metabones ultra. Both were optically the same. The only issue I had with the lens turbo II is that the aperture ring was too short (I use Nikon F mount), and that the lens turbo didn't work with my Sigma 30mm 1.4 (not art) lens. I did not test CA, lens flare, or contrast and saturation. The lens turbo II is only $150 and I would highly recommend it for fully manual lenses or if you want a cheap speedbooster for other lenses that you want to add. Im about to try my nikon lenses on my sony a6300. We'll see..
I confirm, it doesn't support electronic iris control, but optically it's much much better than Viltrox, which gets really soft when the lens is set wide open.

@@spensersakurai Can you explain this?? I mean, technically, you can shoot anamorphic on any camera if you suggest that you can just desqueeze it in post, and view it with an external monitor. But that's not what makes anamorphic modes on cameras like the GH5 or URSA Mini good. They actually use a 4:3 section of the sensor so that you don't have a ridiculous 32:9 wide screen resulting video. In the case of the GH5, you're actually getting a 6K image as a result, and in the URSA, you only get a 3K. So, you can shoot with anamorphic lenses on any camera. And the desqueeze could be included on the PCC4K, or any other camera, really, but they just choose not to include it for some reason. I suspect because few people have these lenses and fewer people use the format to shoot. But I, for one, was disappointed that the PCC4K doesn't have those options in their software (yet). I happen to own a native MFT amamorphic lens from SLR Magic and it's fantastic!!
When shooting on a 4x3 sensor like the pocket has, your maximizing pixels on the anamorphic squeezed image if shooting on a 2x anamorphic lens. The lens is shooting a tall image circle not a wide one. Then you desqeeze in post to get a cinemascope aspect ratio.
@@spensersakurai You're confusing 4x3 sensor with Micro 4/3rds sensor. The pocket cinema 4K camera has a 4096x2160 pixel sensor. That's just slightly wider than 16x9. I'll shoot some test footage with my lens on the camera and then desqueeze it in Premiere and let you know what my resulting resolution and aspect ratio is. But I already know the answer.
Lighting game super strong. I have the pocket 4k, just dropped a ton on the rig and lighting - have some apertures coming in this week, set up Gimble - have three MFT lenses, and this video convinced me to get the metabones in a week. It’s probably a better move to move over to Metabones rather than get a Voigtlander, right? Because the future lenses I should buy need to be EF. How drastic of a difference in quality does the metabones bring? I think I spoke to you on reddit briefly and then found your channel, blown away. Can’t wait to see you thrive.
Using LP-E6 batteries on the BMPCC 4k cuts down the size exponentially. Keeping its small form factor, you can do a lot of really cool stuff you wouldn't normally be able to do with a larger profile cam, like the Ursa 4.6k. I do love the extra 2 stops of dynamic range though. I definitely want to get my hands on one of them! (BTW, I got my pocket in 2 months. Ordered in October, got it in December. It absolutely is a professional camera)
Great video! Love your channel. I love you point about the fact that the BMPCC4K is basically impossible to get at the moment. I think it's unfair to compare these cameras without talking about what they will be used for. Interviews are completely controlled so the extra stops won't do you much good in most interview situations. I honestly just want a beast of a b-roll camera and I think this is wherethe BMPCC4K KILLS EVERYTHING else out there. Toss this on a ronin S and the images you can make with BRAW will just shred anything else you can put on a single handle gimbal. That's what I want it for. The URSA's are amazing for the money but I don't see myself putting it on a gimbal anytime soon. I'll stick to my gh5 and gh4 for my interviews for now as I'm mostly a still shooter and shoot Sony for those occasions.
Maybe you could help me out. As far as I can tell there is no "Ursa Mini 4.6k" It's Ursa Mini Pro 4.6k (g1 and g2) also they have the Ursa Mini 4k (non pro). The Ursa Mini (which looks like the b-roll of the camera you showed in the video) only has an advertised 12 stops of Dynamic Range whereas Ursa Mini Pro 4.6k has (g1 and g2) have an advertised 15 stops of dynamic range. Can you provide some clarity?
The Ursa mini 4.6k came out just before the 4.6k pro g1 & g2 and it has the same sensor as the g1. Look on the used market. There are a lot for sale. To clarify, it is not the 12 stop 4k model.
@@spensersakurai Thanks, I found more information shortly after posting this. I can't find this info anywhere on their site but I was able to find the older manual for it with the specs. Wish they would have left it on their site, or at least make it easier to find.
Do you tend to use the Sigma 18-35 and the Sigma 24-70 a lot for your content and production work - or more so your vintage lenses? Also, I saw you had additional b-roll with the Fuji X-T3 - what do you think of that camera?
Danyal Fryer I love the 18-35 just because of its ease of use with not really any compromise to the image. Use it a lot. I kind of hate the 24-70. It’s not pretty or sharp and isn’t parfocal, so when you zoom, you lose focus. Played with the xt3 for a bit. Super fun camera. I like the vintage look of the lenses and that it has a 10bit color space internally. There is some weird noise reduction going on it though. Didn’t have it long enough to give a full review but I think the xt3 and a new iPad would be a fun travel setup since you can edit those files on an iPad.
@@spensersakurai The only thing I don't like about the Fuji is not having full custom settings/control over the camera (noise reduction like you mentioned, the codecs being quite difficult for editing, storage media etc..) That's why I've been thinking of just making the switch to a dedicated video camera, rather than trying to get the best of both worlds.
Great compersion man, i was searching on these cameras to decide what to buy and now I'm pretty sure I'll go with Ursa Mini, thanks again for this great video, hope to sea more of this kind of videos frome you, also greate scene, well done
The plant and books in the one setting were more in focus in the background on the Pocket vs. the Ursa Mini. If you say the Pocket camera does better in low light, why didn't you reverse the roles and point the Pocket at yourself as you had nearly no lighting on you? *shrugs* My observation. I did like the comments in regards to accessories that would be almost required to get to Ursa Mini grade shooting.
Hi Spenser. I notice that you periodically use a "Black Mist" filter on the BMPCC. Can you talk a bit about what that filter brings to the table and the optimal times to use it? Thanks!
Basic question from a slightly above basic guy, but I’m seeing that the p4k is always at a lower ISO that the URSA, is that because of the speed booster? I’m contemplating either or of these cameras and I’ve seen that the URSA is bad in low light so the higher ISO in a well light shot worries me.
I almost only shoot the pocket 4K at 1000iso for retaining highlight detail. With that bright back lite scene that definitely would have helped. Great video. Cheers bud!
Important! view these explanations of How the BMPCC 4K Dual ISO works: ruclips.net/video/9g85WNnSGQM/видео.html ruclips.net/video/7B4vOhE1rwQ/видео.html ruclips.net/video/g8hHFt3ChZ8/видео.html I think the last one is best.
@@marshallandroxy It seems to keep the highlight level consistent and pump up the shadows giving the appearance of better highlight retention. I agree though, you have to be careful not to have too dark of a scene. Try shooting a bright scene at 1000ISO though - you will see what I'm talking about.
You really don't need a speedbooster, unless you already have non-native glass. Plus with BRAW you can now use SD Cards, and the battery grip wasn't announced when you shot this, but power is now sorted.
Should I use a metabones speed booster with the pocket 4k and a meike cine lens? What would that do for my footage. I'm confused on what the benefits of the metabones is. Thanks so much for these videos they are very helpful!
you shoot with the pocket on white wall and wide lens and you use different lens that is more flattering and nicer texture behind with the ump - your older test was better - still you are amazing i love what you do and appreciate that a lot
Interesting info. I don't plan on buying either camera but the quality of your analysis here makes me want to keep watching. I was really surprised you could get something like the Ursa Mini 4.6k used for 3000$. Not totally out of reach for a budding indie filmmaker, or documentary filmmaker. BTW your wife is certainly a good sport when it comes to being in your videos. Her performance in the opening scene was pretty good too!
Love your work, Spencer. Super happy with my Nikon Z6, so I cant even say I’m quite interested in either of these. Subscribed to your personality, man.
I have a question. What do you think about comparing URSA and BMPCC 4k in terms of DOF? Maybe using speed booster on Pocket 4K for the same field of view.
Quick Question! So I know that there are two types of URSA Mini. One is Black Magic Ursa Mini 4k and the other one is Black Magic Ursa Mini Pro 4.6k So is there a Black Magic Ursa Mini 4.6, which is not pro?
Yes this comparison is with the 4.6k non-pro. Basically just means it doesn’t have interchangeable lens mounts or built in ND filters. Sensor is the same though.
i love the look you get for black magic cameras i have been using the sony a7riii with vintage SLR lenses as i still do a lot of photography and have been considering some new gear get the sonyA7iii as a B-cam or upgrade to the Ursa mini 4.6k and use my A7riii as a B-cam i already use davinch resolve for my workflow
@@nicktosti7487 It's RUclips. I've got both cameras and I've never seen banding like that on both when playing back full bit/data rate on my pc - only occasionally after uploading to RUclips and them compressing it to death.
This is great thank you so much! Do you mind helping me understand the function of the metabones speed booster too? Right now I'm only using a Panasonic Lumix G X Vario 12-35mm f/2.8 II ASPH. POWER O.I.S. - no matte box either. Yet I see both used everywhere. Thanks again!!
The only thing I’d ask in terms of comparing the two is what about BRAW? If the 4.6k could do that then I think there would be no question to go with it. I just feel like BM has kind of left it out in the cold.
How did you match the color so well? I have both these cameras and the pocket always seems a little more dull (less saturated) even when shooting at the exact same color/tint settings. I've tried matching with Film Convert which makes it close, but not the same still.
Thank you for the answer! One more question i got an offer on the Ursa mini 4.6k (Not pro) for 1400,- and a pocket 4k with cage, batteries and ssd card for 1400,- as well, Which one should i buy....? I wanna make mostly professional shortfilms.
You don't need to shoot CFAST on the pocket. You can shoot almost every codec on SSD. Also, with the 0.64x speesbooster, the effective sensor size is *larger* than the UMP 4.6K. Also, the UMP 4.6K needs to be kitted out as well. And all the accessories you need for it will be *more* expensive (gimbal, tripod, batteries..etc since it has to support more weight). So if you compare the cost of creating a functional pocket 4k to a functional ump 4.6k the price gaps opens again. Running and owning the pocket 4k is cheaper across the board. 😊😊
oh man those skin tones are noticeably different... have you had any luck with trying to match the warmer skin tones on the pocket with the more organic/accurate skin tones on the ursa mini?
Hi Spenser! How did you adapt the FD? did you change the mount of your FD or the Metabones is FD to MFT? I'm a little confused on how to use my FD in Pocket4k What is the best way? Loving your videos man!
I have permanently converted my FD with an EF mount but the manufacturer has halted production. You can simply just buy a canon fd metabones speed booster though to use the FDs. I will be making a video about this soon enough.
@@spensersakurai it would be great if you made a video.. I also think that the metabones is the best option .. I have read that it is not the most convenient.. but I dont understand why.. also I had the doubt of being able to stack two adapters on..one FD to EF and then a speedboster EF to mft .. it's a bit overwhelming..
Thanks for this really interesting comparison. One question: why didn’t you utilise Braw for this comparison, since it is available also for the BMPCC4K by latest firmware?
I already shot this whole video when that was announced. Also, braw is awesome but it only works in Resolve and I think that doesn’t make it very practical and that is something I’m always trying to be.
Spenser Sakurai , ah ok, you filmed this prior to update. I could play with some footage, rolled by BMPCC4K (don’t unfortunately own it myself...yet 😉), IMHO jaw dropping, and please take the price point, versatility, weight etc. into consideration. Works only in Resolve? That’s no issue, isn’t it? Develop it as desired in Color, then you may export it by Deliver to many different formats, such as ProRes 4444 or whatever you prefer ☺️
RUclips compression really hates shadows.
Uploading in 4k would have upped the bit-rate quite a bit..

Man you are good! Great story telling. Great sense of humor. Great cinematography. Bravo!
Love your cinema replica challenges.
@@spensersakurai If you don't mind my asking one further question, do you know if it supports the SSD tray?
@07:18 - There is a lot more detail in the plant on the pocket
but what did yoy use for sound in the recreation? It's not in your description
Link to the mic is in the description :-)
Ursa is more 'deep' and has far better highlights. The bang for the buck of the pocket is insane though.
Viltrox vs Metabones could be a future video...
Also, using the "Roger Deacons Ring Light."
My Viltrox is great, but I'm sure that varies between copies, as where the metabones is great across the board.
@@spensersakurai The only thing I don't like about the Fuji is not having full custom settings/control over the camera (noise reduction like you mentioned, the codecs being quite difficult for editing, storage media etc..)
That's why I've been thinking of just making the switch to a dedicated video camera, rather than trying to get the best of both worlds.
Video camera - correction, cinema camera :D
Thanks Spenser... what about the bmpcc 6k vs the Ursa Mini 4.6k?
Great compersion man, i was searching on these cameras to decide what to buy and now I'm pretty sure I'll go with Ursa Mini, thanks again for this great video, hope to sea more of this kind of videos frome you, also greate scene, well done
Why the FUCK doesn’t this channel have more subs? Your videos have been the best for showing off what these cameras can do.
🙌🏼
dude the banding in the first scene with the 2 shot os to the female was nuts tho
ll2nycell that’s RUclips imo, worst compression on the internet, I bet it’s better on Vimeo.
I like the color grading.
Give some tips bro, how to get that lighting and moody look...
You should really get more subscribers. I can't find any other youtuber that does the same thing as you do. Great work!
Loved the scene recreation. Goose bumps. Brilliant practical example. Thanks so.much :-)
Hi Spenser. I notice that you periodically use a "Black Mist" filter on the BMPCC. Can you talk a bit about what that filter brings to the table and the optimal times to use it? Thanks!
It’s a great way of taking the “digital” look off a sensor. It lifts the shadows and blooms the highlights. It’s just a nice look.
Cheers bud!
Important! view these explanations of How the BMPCC 4K Dual ISO works:
ruclips.net/video/9g85WNnSGQM/видео.html
ruclips.net/video/7B4vOhE1rwQ/видео.html
ruclips.net/video/g8hHFt3ChZ8/видео.html
I think the last one is best.
ISO 1000 is really noisy on the Pocket 4k - much more so than 1200.
@@marshallandroxy It seems to keep the highlight level consistent and pump up the shadows giving the appearance of better highlight retention. I agree though, you have to be careful not to have too dark of a scene. Try shooting a bright scene at 1000ISO though - you will see what I'm talking about.
where did you get that Gun from ?
Gracias por tu video, me fue de mucha utilidad, saludos desde Guateamala!!
You really don't need a speedbooster, unless you already have non-native glass. Plus with BRAW you can now use SD Cards, and the battery grip wasn't announced when you shot this, but power is now sorted.
Is this 720p? no offense i need some help but this looks really soft to me. I want the Pocket 4k, just waiting 20 days until NAB
It’s 1080. Doesn’t look soft on my end 🤷🏻♂️
The grading is on point 👍
Awesome man.. keep posting more videos and lighting setups
Glad you liked!
Really impressed with your channel, hope you keep it up
Should I use a metabones speed booster with the pocket 4k and a meike cine lens? What would that do for my footage. I'm confused on what the benefits of the metabones is. Thanks so much for these videos they are very helpful!
Metabones makes the field of view wider so you’re not cropped as much.
what did you use for audio in scene with you and your wife ?? sounds very good!
Yeah I used this microphone and ran it into the Ursa - Audio-Technica microphone - amzn.to/2FxpS0V
you shoot with the pocket on white wall and wide lens and you use different lens that is more flattering and nicer texture behind with the ump - your older test was better - still you are amazing i love what you do and appreciate that a lot
What lens did you use at 4:26? that shot looks awesome
Love your work, Spencer. Super happy with my Nikon Z6, so I cant even say I’m quite interested in either of these. Subscribed to your personality, man.
Well thanks!
You're the best. Im still waiting for the color grading tutorial !!!!
Yes, we are patiently waiting
Why get a metabones speedbooster and not a cheap glassless adapter (ef to mft) ?
I have a question. What do you think about comparing URSA and BMPCC 4k in terms of DOF? Maybe using speed booster on Pocket 4K for the same field of view.
They seem to be pretty close as far as that goes.
It's so true- you really spend about $3,000 or more to rig out the BMPCC4k . How do you feel the two cameras compare in low light?
Wait ... did the non URSA Mini 4.6k get BRAW? I didn’t see that announced.
I read awhile back it did in the fine print. Going to try to update it this week.
Quick Question!
So I know that there are two types of URSA Mini. One is Black Magic Ursa Mini 4k and the other one is Black Magic Ursa Mini Pro 4.6k
So is there a Black Magic Ursa Mini 4.6, which is not pro?
Yes this comparison is with the 4.6k non-pro. Basically just means it doesn’t have interchangeable lens mounts or built in ND filters. Sensor is the same though.
i love the look you get for black magic cameras i have been using the sony a7riii with vintage SLR lenses as i still do a lot of photography and have been considering some new gear get the sonyA7iii as a B-cam or upgrade to the Ursa mini 4.6k and use my A7riii as a B-cam i already use davinch resolve for my workflow
Really nice lighting, but oh man, the gradients at @9:40 really show banding with RUclips compression.
I was wondering if that's from the camera or from youtube, because I don't see banding with the 4.6k
@@nicktosti7487 It's RUclips. I've got both cameras and I've never seen banding like that on both when playing back full bit/data rate on my pc - only occasionally after uploading to RUclips and them compressing it to death.
@@marshallandroxy Thank you so much, I was considering not buying the BMPCC4k because of banding. Now I know :)
I was almost done with this video when braw came out for the pocket so I’ll do a follow up on that in the future.
How did you match the color so well? I have both these cameras and the pocket always seems a little more dull (less saturated) even when shooting at the exact same color/tint settings. I've tried matching with Film Convert which makes it close, but not the same still.
Yeah, I always have to add a little more saturation to the pocket and cool it down about 200 kelvin.
Hi Spencer, is there a difference between the Ursa mini 4.6k and the ursa 4.6k EF?
No. That’s just the lens mount.
Thank you for the answer!
One more question i got an offer on the Ursa mini 4.6k (Not pro) for 1400,- and a pocket 4k with cage, batteries and ssd card for 1400,- as well, Which one should i buy....? I wanna make mostly professional shortfilms.
@@MajesticJungle I prefer the Ursa but the Pocket is great.
wow that intro 11/10
Man, where have you been. Upload some videos, missing you
Next couple days a new one will be up!
😊😊
Yeah but the image from the 4.6 is a delight
would you rather shoot a music video with a RED w/ anamorphics or the ursa mini pro 4.6k w/ anamorphics when renting?
Ursa would be cheaper and a little lighter but I’m not really sure. They are both great.
Hey. Arek you stilo consider Ursa mini 4.6 as better even grom bmpcc 6k ?
oh man those skin tones are noticeably different... have you had any luck with trying to match the warmer skin tones on the pocket with the more organic/accurate skin tones on the ursa mini?
I can get it close but the Ursa wins on that side of things straight out of camera.
Hi Spenser! How did you adapt the FD?
did you change the mount of your FD or the Metabones is FD to MFT?
I'm a little confused on how to use my FD in Pocket4k
What is the best way?
Develop it as desired in Color, then you may export it by Deliver to many different formats, such as ProRes 4444 or whatever you prefer ☺️
what Camera & Lens did you use to film yourself??
Holy!!!! That opening scene!!
