  • I perform a neurologic examination on a horse, starting with palpation and visual inspection and concluding with movement tests, which include circling, backing, walking with a raised head and up and down inclines, and the sway test. Neurologic examinations should follow a comprehensive physical examination with history from the horse's owner. You want to determine which part of the horse is affected (head, neck, limbs, etc.) and if the signs are symmetric. From here, you will perform further diagnostics to determine the cause and hopefully the treatment.

Thank you so much for this VERY informative, easy-to-understand video loaded with valuable information. We've been having some issues with a new-to-us older horse who reportedly has arthritis. Heading out in the morning to try this exam on her to see if there's more to our story.

Few more things are normally checked: anus reflex and perineal sensation, tail tonus, skin rippling reflex, cervico-facial response
