I remember watching Silence Of The Lambs many many years ago and falling in love with this song. I was immediately in love with Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers.
I saw Petty on my birthday, Hollywood Bowl, was phenomenal. When I got home, I was hired as a teacher. Forever in my soul Tom Petty. Wish I'd had one more concert.
From all of us American Girls, who dream about there being more to life than what is offered to us...thank you Mr Petty for your brilliant lyrics and endless life sound track....
I've listened to Tom Petty sing since I was 18 years old; I'm 59 now. I'm saddened to know the rest of my journey on this earth will be without him ... but I still have all of his previous cds to listen to along the way. He made my life - and this world - more beautiful and bearable with his immense talents. Thank you for sharing your gifts with us all. Rest in Peace. You earned it.

Thank you for being the best road trip companion a girl could ever want! nothing beats rolling down the windows, singing American Girl, open road ahead
I think of it as the soundtrack of the California Dream, that we saw in movies and TVs all over the world in the 80s and 90s. His songs aren't really for the ones who never left their hometowns, they're for the ones who did leave to run down a dream.
A massive Part of me died when I lost my mom December 1, 2016. 10 months and 1 day later it was a swift kick to the nuts and another chunk of me dead when Tom died. Tom was one of my mom's all time favorites.
He did so much for the music industry, me and my friends used to sit around the campfire listening to him in the background just chillin out havin a beer and during the song "You don't know how it feels" we sparked up a little something 😉😉
Listening to this teared me up, seeing such an icon and fantastic musician and writer of music for all to love until the sun goes out. I myself have been a musician for 50 years and played with many great musicians and bands. I know the feeling in the heart when playing on stage. very accelerating and loved every moment. Tom Petty You have been an inspiration to me and millions of others. Thank you for your contribution to the world and spiritual-ness of it all.. You will be greatly missed my friend...
I don't think they ever got tired of playing this song. Tom and Mike gave it everything they had every time. How fitting it was Tom's swan song. RIP Sir, heaven knows you earned it. 🎸
Writing from Vegas. What a tragic 2 days. Tom Petty was a true, classic, American singer/songwriter/guitarist and they don't make them like that anymore. I, too, have a broken heart late tonight. Man, Fast Times at Ridgemont High wouldn't be the same without American Girl. You will always rock, Tom. Thanks for all the hits and keep doing your thing from above...
Rest In Peace, Tom. I'm only thirteen years old, but you were still my childhood idol. I remember listening to you and singing along when I was very young. I will surely miss you
Such a brilliant song. Proof that less is often more, which was saying something considering the era of rock 'n' roll when this came out. Brilliant album, brilliant artist, very sad day. RIP Tom
I really only started listening to his music after he passed. He is now my favorite artist. Most artists I usually like a few of their songs, but with Tom Petty, I absolutely love every single one of his songs. I really wished I started listening to him before he passed because I didn't really care too much when he passed. I would've given my life savings to see him in concert before he passed.
Yes I think that's what's so great about Petty & The Heartbreakers, essentially every song from every album is very enjoyable. You clearly "get" that, and to me it's what makes him/them my favorite also. When I've told other people that Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers are my favorite band, they'll often say something like "Oh yeah, American Girl, Refugee, Free Fallin'". And I'll say something like "Well yes those are good, but it's really the full albums that I love, not just the "hits". I can think of other artists where their top hits are even more stunning than the top hits of TPATH, but none where each album is awesome from start to finish (I'd say they got a little less consistent in their final 20 years vs. their first 20, but even then the percentage of enjoyable songs remained high). I was fortunate enough to see them in concert while TP was alive, and even when Stan Lynch was the drummer, which IMO was the best period. I suggest that you explore the live official releases from the band, and also search RUclips and the rest of the internet for live Tom Petty concert recordings. They were such a great live band, and the live songs often differed enough from the studio versions that sometimes it's like listening to a "new" song when you hear it live.
I saw him live in Gainesville, FL in 1983 - where he was born and raised - this was after his fourth album and the first time he had performed in Florida since signing his Record Contract - Stevie Nicks came out as an unanounced guest and sang Stop Draggin' My Heart around with him - I saw him again in Gainesville the following year - the first time I think he opened with American Girl and the second time he closed with it - God bless him
Tom Petty.....Will miss you...Went to every concert you had in K.C. Mo, but your very last one😢...Loved your music, spirit, and the way you made it feel like we were sitting in your living room...Going to miss you... R.I.P.....✌❤...My friend
I listened to Tom throughout my early life in the 80's, and 90's. I am very hardened, but I every time I think about him I start to tear up. God speed Mr. Petty.
David Bowie, Prince, Michael Jackson, Tom Petty, all of the stars, and you just keep on taking death you greedy jerk. RIP Tom. Thank you for everything 🎸🤘🏼
Takes me back in time, that charming American girl with her electric vibe rocked my world. Something that's so close and yet so fAaar out of RRrrREeAcH! 👍
Thank you from an "American girl" for all the incredible music!!! You had a distinct sound that when you heard the song, you knew it was Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers! Sure gonna miss you.... ~ R.I.P. sweet soul ~
I feel like it's because all of the lack of self care finally caught up with them. I love Tom Petty though and most of the greats we lost. It's just too sad that most of them lived too fast
Also sad that the so called rock stars we have nowa days can not even begin to fill the shoes of the greats we lost in the past few years...Bad days ahead for rock n roll in general
i'm 62 and have been going to more concerts of his than I can count since his Damn the torpedoes Album came out. Damn Tom, We, all your Fans will miss you with words that fall well short of what we feel right now.
Hell yes! I love the entire catalog from start to finish, but that initial group of guys leaving Gainesville ~ their amazing story. The very roots of the band. The "You're Gonna Get it" album..... The original Heartbreakers. It's an epic moment!
I was in Kentucky yesterday, looking at the hills, smelling fresh-cut hay and grass and could picture Tom sitting on the side of a brook, picking a song like this. It's my memory of him.
I was drawn to the music scene in Gainesville in the late 80's. I traveled from L. A. to the City of Gators and my brother Gary Wilson jammed for hundreds of miles listening to Tom Petty. God bless your soul brother!
I refuse to say goodbye to you, Tom Petty. . . I'll have this great music in my heart with you, always. Thank you so much for everything. You had me at 'Breakdown' and I feel that nobody can match your heart and soul commitment to music.
I still have my first Tom Petty album - a cassette I purchased in 1978. It sits there on the shelf & I can't bring myself to toss it out! Ah memories . . . . .
Words can't describe his talent and PASSION for what he loved. A great legend will be missed. Thanks for all the songs that we can always listen to. Thinking of his family also.

I was hoping that maybe, just maybe, they would tour one more time with Stan in the band. Now it's impossible and this video is all that's left of that possibility. Best live version of this song in over 20 years.
O Brasil se entristece com essa perda. Mais um rockeiro amado por todos q se vai. Os céus se alegram com sua chegada, Tom. Aqui sentiremos sua falta. : (
Greatest rock and roll band of the last 40 years. Bar none. And Tom? Oh yea, alright...make it last all thru life...he was OUR American Boy. There will never be another. And yes..God it IS so painful...indeed. Godspeed TP.
The only reason anyone missed Tom Petty in concert is because they Never Bought a Ticket. He toured relentlessly for 40 Years and in the end it ended up killing him.
fretkillrfan Actually, a heroin / opiate addiction is what killed him. Same thing with Howie. It was so sad seeing Howie looking so gaunt and sick at the R&R Hall of Fame. Tragic losses, both of them! ❤️💔🎶
Rock & Roll will never die but too many of my legends have! Whenever I felt down or stressed one of my mood changing songs was I WON'T BACK DOWN by Tom Petty. He was a gifted musician & songwriter! Thank you Tom for helping me get through my journey of life. I pray your family, friends & band find peace through the pain⚘
And the amazing thing is, they could do this live, any time. From what I'm hearing, the reports are true, or will be. Thank you for all that you did, Mr. Petty, and may God find a place in heaven for you to keep making music.
rip tom petty, thanks for all of the music 🎶

About a girl overdosing on heroin...you know that right?
