It’s a love or hate show. Not mad at anyone “not getting it” but it’s easier to write something off as bad/nonsense than to critically engage and unpack what you didn’t like about it. So much of the show is subtle and deeper than surface level, and also metaphorical. It’s also intended to make viewers uncomfortable, not for the sake of discomfort, but to express uncomfortable ideas and represent the awkwardness, ambiguity, and morality we encounter in reality. The finale will be disappointing for people looking for a traditional TV show conclusion but this show is not just about plot points and narrative. It’s a challenging watch by design and puts more work on the audience to find meaning than average shows. There’s so much to process that I will need to watch it back a second time to digest and offer a full critique. It’s totally fair if all this doesn’t resonate with you, but I guarantee that anyone who watches the show will have a strong reaction (either positive or negative) which is always better than a meh reaction in my opinion.
I appreciate your level headed, respectful comment.
This should be the pinned comment

i get it but it's half assed bullshit and a waste of time
i get it but it's half assed bullshit and a waste of time
I think this dude needs to go to a couple comedy classes..
cope and seethe
The reason you didn’t like it: 🤡
experiencing that loss of autonomy and ultimately having your fate in the hands of those in power who think they're doing right but have no idea the actual gravity of the situation is like what the entire show is about lol
and it coming so out of nowhere and viscerally feeling that kind of tonal whiplash that makes you kind of tense up and get all panicky is not only like The Whole Thing that makes earlier saftie stuff so special but also provides such a exhilarating end to such a slow burn, and even if it doesn't wrap things up in a neat little bow, i think if we had something like that, it would lack all that intrigue and nuance that leaves you chewing on it and getting more out of it long after you stop watching. i think getting that feeling where something is just so distinct and leaves such an impression that you just have that itch that lingers on in your brain is what separates the wheat from the chaff in a way
lmao I hadn't yet seen someone use "the gravity of the situation" to describe it, well done
The show was without hyperbole one of the greatest pieces of art ever created.
It was a complete waste of time
@@rugbyfan808 it was the best possible way to spend time in life
How old are you?
@@Franciskev2 older than you.
@@kyle2 with hyperbole?
What was your expectation with Fielder? This is totally like him not suprised.
Not at all. His previous shows were all masterpieces that were entertaining to watch even if cringeworthy and sometimes confusing. This one has simple messages that are driven in very slowly with very little to hang on while we are being dragged for 10 too long, too slow, too uneventful episodes.
When you didnt get the show 💀
The critical depth on display. With chops like these, that subscriber chart in the background should fill up in no time.
I completely understand not liking it but you cannot deny that this last episode's surreal quality is the kind of thing that leaves you thinking about it for a long long time after it's over. Especially because it doesn't seem to make sense.
Imagine an art performance where someone takes a canvas and literally shits on it. Will you think about it for a long time? Yes. Will some art critics claim it's genius because it is "meta" or something? Yes. It is great art? No.
@@Rotaermel I disagree with that actually. Art isn't just the thing itself it's how people perceive it, how much it's talked about. Marcel Duchamp's "Fountain" is just a Urinal that he put on display in a museum, and it's one of the most discussed famous works ever. Great art is usually divisive, not universally loved.
The Curse is a masterpiece and people are not ready for it
I watched it late last night and all I was thinking today was I probably dreamed that ending it was so absurd
I thought for sure Asher was going to wake up...but...nope...
@@TheorySmackhow would a “it was all a dream” ending have been any better? It was a ballsy move for them to establish the situation Asher was in as reality. Dream endings are a cop out
@@justingreen575 nah, a dream ending wouldn’t have been better. Simply tying up the storyline would have been nice.
@@TheorySmack Lol same. I stopped the episode when Asher said to himself "wake up" and when I saw that there are only a few min left, all hope was gone.
i think it makes the ending even funnier when people say bad things about it. i can just picture nathan sat at home laughing at the comments.
ROFL, I love this and hope it’s true.
I mean, it is pretty obnoxious that because you aren't smart enough to explain why you dislike it, you just dismiss it entirely and pretend it's bad lol
engage critically or not at all.
I covered it in detail in another video
This was the result of me continuing the show in hopes of a decent payoff anyway, and then getting the finale we saw.
This video, like the show, was my satirical expression of how felt. I assumed fans of the show would understand that.
@@TheorySmack Satire just isn't your thing I guess, whether it's viewing it or making it.
@@ambylam you just didn’t get it
@@TheorySmack It's ok for you to admit you failed to make something interesting or funny. failure is part of the artistic journey.
It's a masterpiece of surrealism
Dork
This youtube video is as well actually
Thought provoking analysis!
Enjoy your high click-thru rate. Was it worth it?
???
I had fun making the video.
I didn't like the show.
So...sure?
You just don't understand it and that's ok!
Sorry you weren't able to get it
Maybe one day
@Dizmodo I couldn't write like 3 paragraphs going over the final episode alone lol, give it a rewatch all together and maybe you'll get it more. But to each there own
Jealousy destroys.
You don’t know ball
love or hate, i gotta admit that a season finale hasnt made me think so much for a long time. i been thinking about it literally all day. unfortunately no one i know watches it so im just left alone with my own thoughts 🤣
You don't have enough hexagons, that's why you don't get it
MOAR HEXAGONS
Fantastic show, fantastic ending. I literally had nightmares about it. I will be thinking about this ending for ages.
Saw the whole series, I thought it was ok, for sure not the best. Some of you guys throw around "masterpiece" or "brilliant" too often
This episode could just have been Benny and Nathan giving us one last "F you!" As they shut the door on this project.
I can make a RUclips video just staring at some other content and then it get views?
You can’t, but I can.
@@TheorySmack nice
Filtered.
Not mad at this. People need to calm down holy hell. My wife is a Nathan Fielder fan and she couldn’t get into the show. I’m not mad at it. It isn’t for everyone. My man just made a short funny video on his thoughts for the show.
People coming for me and my bald head, lol
It's okay to be completely wrong. This made the entire show.
You get one out of five stars.
Same. 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️ ????
Some shows try to be different just for the sake of being different, but then make it so they have no obligation to actually make sense or come together.
Some people must use an entirely different dictionary on what they think a masterpiece is. 🤷🏻♀️
Absolutely
This “review” is a bigger waste of time than any piece of media that makes creative decisions I don’t agree with.
You just didn’t get it
I actually loved the show. I don't understand it, but I still loved the utter absurdity and sheer wtf-ness of ep 10. I don't blame you one bit for the review though 😅
There's was definitely plenty of absurdity
Literally my reaction after being engaged all the way through the series.
I was hoping, hoping, hoping for Asher to wake up at one point.
I loved the show and the ending but this was funny as fuck
Glad you enjoyed :)
Gotta love how almost every person who really liked this show thinks they're the smartest person in the room and the only one with any media literacy that's ever watched an art house film in their life, while the rest of us poor plebes can only handle a show that's 'M0rE TraDiTIonaL and MaINsTreAm'. Gtfo, man. This is the most spot-on review I've ever seen.
Well said.
People have come at me hard for my opinion on this show, and it always comes down to, “you just don’t get it” and then I’m told to go watch Marvel or something.
These people are as pretentious as the show itself.
I’ve seen many more people making fun of anyone who likes the show, just like you are, thinking they’re smarter because they hate it.
Funny about that hey
@@pitchen Even a cursory look over the comments in this video reveals that plenty of people rip on the show itself and/or love it while the vast majority of people attacking dizmodo and other people are those who liked the show and are mad not all of us enjoyed it.
Your anecdotal experience matters little in the face of evidence, I'm afraid.
Although, I liked it I liked your review.
Great great series! Not sure about the finale. I did really dig the episode, it was a lot of fun. Just a little to much room for interpretation. Maybe that's a fear of committing to a certain direction? I dont know. It was a good series that really mixed things up for me! Look forward to more by this crew. Arthouse cinema is 1 thing, but not seen anything like that actually serialised untill now. So for that she gets a big plus from me. And just the last episode being so fun! I can't think of many serieses i truly like the ending to. And for everyone to that seems all the more impossible. So making a fun last episode with all the references and connections the individual can interpret... i don't know, i just liked it and the end didn't make me really unhappy and disappointed like most stuff does, lol. Instead left with wonder (and of course Reddit)! Haha.
Maybe give it another try, sometimes it takes a bit of time to absorb a thing.
I don't think a season 2 is possible, nor would it be a good idea imo. I do however hope this crew stays together to being the arthouse cinema to serieses.
I've got my Hal Hartley, Gus Van Sant, Spike Jonze, Jim Jarmusch and i love those guys, really really do just they're movie guys, and these days there's more time for an episode a night than a full movie a night. My 2 cents anyway
...if you were paying attention you'd understand why that happened to Asher; It's clearly because he told those guys his ATM PIN in the first episode...
That's exactly it...how could I miss it?!
When are you going to film a shot of somebody falling upwards; I would like to see you try and then I will give you a rating
Ok no surprise you hated the finale I’m still in shock
I definitely cant believe that’s the ending we got. So, shock probably is the right word.
idk who you are but I busted a gut at the highlight. Liked and sub'd
Idk who you are, but I’m sure glad you liked my video
ROFL!!! Some things really don't need discussion...well done! So much potential...no results.
I couldn't come up with words for a review and almost didn't make this. Then thought...well...I could always do a "silent" review. lol
Yeahhhhhh, that was rather frustrating.....
Nathan Filder has garnered such respect from the industry that anything he does shitty or not is regarded as a masterpiece. 🤷♂️
Pretty much.
ok baldy
I would rather be watching ancient Greek naked olive oil wrestling or even modern day Turkish olive oil wrestling with all that grabbiness.
AMEN TO THAT
You hate what you don’t understand? Small mind big head
"Small mind, big head" is my Curse, I suppose.
Sometimes the reactions says everything. No need to say anything. Priceless
Thanks brother
@@TheorySmackthose was my reactions when I was watching Aquaman 2 the lost kingdom because I was lost, confused, and baffled.
No accounting for taste.
Especially bad taste.
Like yours.
This review is 😂 chef's kiss, man...and also...accurate.
🙃
Yeah. Go back to watching John Wick.
I know you’re insulting me, but I figured I’d respond and say wick 1 was pretty good, even 2, but they lost me after
@@TheorySmack How that's an insult? The first John Wick was ok.
This made me laugh more than the entire series.
My job here is done
So you only watched like 5 minutes of The Curse?
@@pitchen no I watched the entire series. This was the first Nathan Fielder project I’ve seen. I’ve heard good things about him and his work but I don’t think his humor is for me. Unfortunately the final episode cemented the feeling like I wasted 10 hours of my time. I hope you enjoyed the show but Nathan Fielder isn’t my cup of coffee.
In before all the comments telling me "I just don't get it"
You just don’t get it💀💀💀💀💀💀
You don’t have to understand why gravity reverses for Asher to appreciate what happens
Never said I did.
But it would have been cool of some of the multitude of story loops opened throughout the should could have had some sort of resolution
@@TheorySmack i've heard a lot of people say this but genuinely I disagree. let's look at some of the plotlines people bring up:
nala's curse paves the way for dougie's curse ("fly"). the entire series built up to some supernatural explosion and it's not the show's fault that people ignored episode 7's ending because ASHER (who is so reliable, right?) said the curse wasn't real
whitney & asher's relationship is resolved through the entire episode and is also the main main plotline of the whole thing
dougie trying to brew up drama for the show-resolved in ep 9 bc of the execs wanting a drama-less show
news & whistleblower stuff-resolved ep 9. what were they gonna do, assassinate asher? lol
whit & asher's failed methods of "helping" the community-perfectly mirrored by the firefighters trying to "help" asher
abshir-left up to interpretation but definitely leaves the audience with some questions about what he's been doing off screen.
abshir at the chiropractor-foreshadowing for asher on the tree
fernando-completely wrapped up in ep 9 through whitney & asher's dialogue. honestly this is the only thing that i will call people out on because they are brainwashed as hell by chekhov's gun ruling over so many stories. it's española, people have guns. that's just the setting. people being upset that they didn't go for the shit people have been predicting for almost 2 months straight (for the sole reason that other stories do it) is not a flaw
cara-resolved throughout 8/9/10
the ripper getting evicted & the hair pulling in ep9-mostly for setup to make you look at Whitney's parents in a more positive light. The headlines are not the full story, just like how the audience knows what happened to asher on the tree, but to the onlookers, it's just "for the show." On the hair pulling front? I don't know, honestly, but i'd assume there's something to be found there. It's such a minor moment anyway, not really a plot point.
the comedy class-was just an arc of the season that helped asher's development along.
i'm sure there's more but if you use common sense like the entire rest of the series expected you to upon being presented with offscreen developments, there are answers to most questions.
I do wish there were answers for some of the stuff, like the weird rape guy at the art party and the reason for the religious singing at the end of one episode. i also understand frustration on the lack of explanation on the camera looks, but there's gotta be some shit left up to interpretation in a crazy show like this.
but at the end of the day the show has been doing the same thing in almost every episode up until now, leaving the audience with something they expect one way, and then undoing it the next. Who hasn't had this happen in real life? Arguments come and go, things that feel like the end of the world end up just fine the next week. the real objective of the show is obviously the realism of the performance and characters. The MAIN plot of the show revolves around the relationship between Whitney, Asher, & Dougie, NOT the random bullshit in their lives causing rifts and chaos. if you read up on the links between asher & the baby (the micro penis, the cuck shit, the way others treat him, the mood explosions, misunderstanding of others, the shirt he wears) you'll notice that this ending, while completely balls-to-the-wall, was heavily foreshadowed. and if you use critical thinking, you'll realize that most of the "unresolved" plot points can be understood quite easily.
if you want my honest thoughts? the point of the show is to make you care about the characters as PEOPLE, rather than punching bags for the story to make you feel better, and most of the complaints I see are by people who wanted Whitney to get cancelled, Asher to get shot, and Dougie to get in a car crash. that's never been the story or the atmosphere the series has built up at all.
😂😂😂... SAME!
The show is fucking objectively terrible.
That sub reddit is embarrassing. This was such a disappointment. The writing on this show was god awful. Maybe that was intentional? Either way the finale ruined the entire series. The frustrating part is that there is a lot of very interesting material to work with. If they had a better ending (maybe Asher gets shot by Fernando or maybe he just disappears?) and edited out all of the red herrings this could have been a really great 6-8 episode series. Instead we got this mess
That subreddit DEFINITELY doesn't like people hating on the show...lol
Tbh I disagree. The writing imo was great but I’m disappointed with the way it ended. As a piece of art, it was great. As the conclusion to a story though, it was pretty bad. I get that it was probably supposed to be pretty symbolic but I was really looking forward to all the loose ends being tied up and hoping to see the end of unfinished storylines
@@Gabriel-el3hn You have just hit the nail on the head in terms of what I disliked about this show from the beginning.
They were telling a story...multiple stories...but none of them were progressing and I could tell they wouldn't conclude in the end.
Well....here we are. lol
Yeah i was disappointed as well,
I guess him flowing to a space is some sort of metaphor for all stuff he's done and also what hes gone through.
But really?!?!
I gone through this whole shit so he flown to SPACE at the end.
Disappointed and bored.
I watched this finale on my commute to work at 5am.
Literally thought i was still asleep dreaming this, i couldnt believe it was so preposterous.
Massive fail and waste of my time. I definitely bet on a losing horse.
Yuuuuuuup
Had a strong feeling we were headed to a giant nothing-ending.
And…well…here we are
L take
I tried twice myself i only got past the second episode its trash
This show was an absolute waste of time. I read some reviews where folks are talking about how it’s speaking under the surface and even in metaphors but I think it was just crap writing and lazy story telling
I can't imagine how boring it must be to expect all stories to follow the same formulas and traditions 🤮🤮
@@pitchen oh yeah the dialogue and acting was subpar as well
I absolutely loved this show. But the finale..... what the FUCK!?@?!?!?@?!?!@? Worst season finale ever.
completely agree with this review😂
Like...what did we just spend 10 hours watching?
Couldn't have said it better myself
Pretentious arthouse garbage show.
LOL
this show sucked ass.
