    It's amazing how much Moore's Law has fallen out of relevence. With the Pentium Pro coming out in 1996 and Windows XP coming out in 2001, there is a five year difference between hardware and software. If one was to run Windows 10 on a Core i7-720QM, it would be faster than Windows XP running on this Pentium Pro machine.

      Even now, I have Windows 11 running on a desktop with an Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550. Windows 11 came out in late 2021 while the C2Q Q9550 came out in early 2008, so that would be over a 13 year difference, however Windows 11 still runs fairly well on old hardware.

      Its fast enough, sure the numbers dont lie but for 80% of the stuff its fine, just make sure you are on an ssd and have a decent video card with hardware video decoding / encoding. (like an RX480)

    If I remember correctly the Pentium Pro lacked MMX Technology. This is probably why your games weren't all that great. In the old days, I could use a Pentium MMX @ 233MHZ and a ATI Rage ll GPU and get over 30fps on most games in the mid/late 90s. The MMX was a big help. Something about the multimedia instructions. I don't remember if the Pentium had SSE Tech or not. SSE was big in Pentium lll.

    • @derbiber842
      @derbiber842 2 года назад +2

      MMX was not very usefull in games. Games like POD providing versions with and without MMX support, showed no improvement. More the opposite was the case.

    • @crxtodd16
      @crxtodd16 Год назад

      @@derbiber842 This. MMX was really just a sales gimmick. Intel always trying to make things more complicated than they needed to be, just to make themselves seem superior. There were only a small handful of applications that saw any notable benefit from MMX, but in real world usage no one could tell one way or the other.

    The SIMM RAM looks like it could have Infinnion chips on or Micron as it looks like crucial stuff, but I’m likely wrong!
    XP on a 200MHz Pentium ! Lol
    The minimum requirements for XP were 64mb ram & Pentium or equivalent at 233MHz I think
    GeForce 2 mx200 must have been “bottoenecked” by the processor lool
    Never thought I’d say that!!
    It will run better if you set desktop background to a solid colour but I’m sure you know this !

      @Troppa17 3 года назад +2

      These are actually Micron SIMMs with Micron chips on them. (MT=Micron Technology) Mircon made them for Compaq exclusivly if I remember correctly.
      XP runs fine even on an Pentium MMX 166 MHz but only without the Luna theme and enough RAM. 64 MB and a slow CPU like this will not do.
      xD Yes never thought I'd would say that too. The GF2 MX 200 depends on a fast CPU to make any game playable. In this case I think even an Voodoo 2 wouldn't have been slower as the MX200..
      @tntrafael No, that's not the case. Neither Quake 3 Arena nor the Detonator Driver required MMX to run. Just a slow GPU on an by its release 5 year older and thus slow CPU.

      @@Troppa17 when I replied to this great video, I hadn’t watched it all and was trying to type stuff that I saw.
      I know the Pentium pro is socket 8 and I simply didn’t think; hence me saying socket 7, obviously like the original Pentium was in and depending on the chipset, super socket 7 mobo’s could run k6-3’s & obviously the first two k6 series of AMD processors.
      I remember a pc chips m5xxx with a sis520/530 chipset being able to run k6’s but a lot of SiS’ chipsets as found on pc chips m810lmr (SiS730), m741lmrt (sis620/30) and I owned both boards mentioned deliberately to help people on forum’s which had the same (slow, crappy) mobo’s which were noticeably very picky with memory, graphics cards (had onboard 8mg & up to 64mg onboard on the m810lmr skt a (462pin) boards. Both also required a much more powerful PSU as most people would realise & ide + dma mode problems & hacked BIOS’ for the m810lmr so they could even be overclocked lol!!
      Most I got my 7.1 to was 140fsb when the limit was 133fsb Athlon’s from memory (Rev 5 onwards), but some rev 3’s could “unofficially” run 133fsb chips (Athlon tbird & XP’s) BUT only palomino based chips, not thoroughbred a/b/duron Applebreds due to chipset limitations !

    Well, it did better than I though it would on the internet. I’ve seen old netbooks and chromebooks struggle more than that!

    Taky sbírám Pentium Pro, s duálním socketem 8 + voodoo 2 v dualu a matroxem m3d by to byla lepší paráda, potom jsou fps v quake okolo 60, dá se použít i Matrox 450 PCI nebo ati 9250 PCI, to už není ono. Hadam že ta instalace Windows XP je jen kvůli chybějícím ovladačům? Držím palce do dalších projektů
