- Today we're getting into the hypotheticals -- shoulda, woulda, coulda. Practice listening to advanced structures like these with Jiveworld: go.jiveworld.com/yt
Are you the type to get hung up on potential outcomes? Then these phrases in Spanish -- using verbs deber, haber, and poder -- are a must! Even if you've learned the textbook versions in school, we'll also go over some more local ways to say should have, could have, and would have. Sound out and practice in the comments!

As a native Spanish speaker, I must say your videos are excellent and capture so many subtleties that are rarely taught. Of course, I don’t need to learn (any more) Spanish, but I enjoy watching you. I’m currently learning other languages-Italian and French mostly-and I really wish there were other RUclipsrs as clear, nuanced, and straightforward as you.
I completely agree! Unlike most other so called Spanish teachers on yt she is competent, unpretentious and easy to dig. 💯💪
I intend to use Spanish professionally, but I really appreciate your commitment to teaching everyday / conversational Spanish in addition to what you’ll see in a textbook! That’s so valuable and helpful!
I have studied Spanish for years and have always struggled with grammar, but this is the best lesson of the multitude of videos I have seen over the years, great job!
Nunca podría haber imaginado que un native de inglés tendría una acento de español tan maravilloso!
¿Y de por qué pensarías eso?
I have been teaching myself Spanish for more than 15 years. In addition to a legion of native Spanish speakers, I have heard many native English speakers teaching Spanish. By far your accent is the finest I have ever heard! You must have spent years in a Spanish-speaking country!@@athruz7919
A la mayoría les cuesta o simplemente no se toman la molestia de hacer bien las vocales o algunas consonantes del español@@athruz7919
That’s a nice thing to say if you said it correctly or not, I don’t know. I kinda left the verbs to sort themselves out and most of them never did so now I have to face reality and hit the books or find good videos like these ❤
Tal vez por el ejemplo del video, “Nunca pude haber imaginado…”
I grew up with Spanish and knew how to say all this but never quite understood the grammar, so thank you for clarifying!
no pudo haber sido mejor! You have terrific style and I also loved the construction of the lesson!
Excelente contenido y mucha suerte a todos los que aprenden este hermoso idioma 😽
This is sooo eye opening! I hear so often these expressions and could not locate what it really means... Thank you.
thanks alot. The non textbook stuff is very helpful as I'm in a learning in a spanish speaking country that doesn't really have any english speakers
Thank you,I have lived in Mexico for 13 years and still study Spanish, lol never will graduate, I’m old tho 74
Please make more videos like this! You explain things so clearly.
Tu podcast no podría haber sido mejor. Muchisimas gracias.
Debería haber encontrado este canal antes de hoy. Gracias 😊
Yo también.
This was so helpful! I’m at this level now where I’m trying to incorporate these into conversations and I always get confused! Very clear explanations and examples. Thank you!
OMG you're amazing! You make it so simple!
Thank you-intimidating and confusing topic, but you break it down and make it very understandable.
So helpful. So clear. And BONUS everyday non text book style. Muchísimas gracias 🙌
Great video, your teaching style is awesome. Mucha gracias por el video!

Thank you so much. These are exactly the Spanish words I needed to understand better. Your explanations were on point. I'm definitely subscribing.
Amazing video! I feel like I've received a lesson on this topic many times but this was the first time it really made sense. Thank you!
Absolutely brilliant! Thank you sooo much. ❤
Prior to watching this video I did not understand this concept at all but this has allow me to expand my vocabulary of Spanish and add these useful common phrases. Thank You very much!
Always wanted to know, thanks!
Very helpful. Really clarified things for me. Thanks
Excelente!!!
Eso fue invaluable!!!
The most useful video on Spanish for intermediate/advanced learners I’ve seen
Great lesson. Thank you.
Native speaker here. Verdict: listen to her, all legit advice. On pudiera, in this case, don't substitute for pudiese (which is the other past subjunctive type--pudiera/pudiese are generally interchangeable just not in this case). Also, pudo and podria haberte ayudado, can in some cases mean the same thing, but there can be some important differences. El pudo haberte ayudado (means he definitely had been able to help you), whereas podria haberte ayudado (he with an element of likelihood would have been able to help you). Situationally, these may not matter, but the former is assertive, while the second one remains somewhat hypothetical/conditional. Awesome video! I am using as a cheat to get my wife up to speed. Thank you!
Es la primera vez que he encontrado su pagina. Me gustó el contenido. Voy a suscribirme. ¡Bien hecho!
What a great video. Thanks sm
Great lesson, thank you!
Me encantaron las explicaciones! Hubieras subido el video cuando estaba en el comienzo de mi aprendizaje!
Thank you so so much for your clear precise expanation of these words. Now i understand them. Bien hecho
Super well explained thank you!
Your voice is so soothing, and the explanation was great! Thank you
Was thinking the same, so chill! Could do guided meditations!
Excellente! ¡Debería venir aquí más a menudo!
¡Por fin comprendo por qué en la letra de Café Tacuba "Esa noche" el cantante dice, "No me hubieras dejado esa noche..."! ¡Siempre pensaba que no había bastantes palabras para expresar, "You shouldn't have left me that night"!
¡Gracias!
Qué explicación tan clara. Muchas gracias. Yo no debería haber perdido tanto tiempo con ese molesto búho.
Home run, you are an excellent teacher, thank you !
extremely helpful
I really like how you teach those little nuggets. And your voice is scrumptious. 🙂
This video was so helpful and really helped me learn the words would , should and could in Spanish and it simplified it in my brain so quick I was on track already with the word haber thank youu 💗!
I guess the difference between deberias and debiste is that debiste is an expression of what you should have done at the time, and deberias is what you should have done from the point of view of now. Usually these are the same, but you can see how they might not be
Great video. Very helpful. Thanks!
Me encanto ❤ podrías mas videos así? Es muy informativo
Excellent!
Excelente lección genial contexto
Yo debería haber sabido esta información. You have a new subscriber for sure. This was excellent!
Thank you. This is very useful!
Fantastic lesson just what I wanted to know. Thanks
Very well done. No podria haber aprendido mas!
Studying Spanish for decades this is excellent
Such a helpful video.
Please, could you do a video on expressing suppositions. I hold a near native fluency in Spanish, but these little phrases still trip me up! I’ve never had an academic/formal class on them.
In Mexico they say “No ha de haberle gustado” for she must not have liked it.
Ojalá hubiera encontrado tu canal antes. ¡Suscrito! !Eres asombrosa!
Que Maravilloso ! Yo he estado aprendiendo Español a intervalos desde que comencé La Secundaria. Ahora tengo 27 años y yo vivo realmente cerca de México (no mas que 10 minutos). A pesar de la relatividad , todavía me encuentro tener unos problemas usar "deber / poder + haber" Y no me di cuenta que se pone la "se" despues de haber entonces Gracias por todo ! Espero que subas mas vídeos
Amazing content!! Definitely got a new subscriber here !
I began to learn Spanish on the streets and backended that at university. Your approach does an excellent job of combining these two elements. It's a huge advantage for your viewers. Cheers, Jiveworld.
Thank you, Paul! That means a lot to us.
Really well taught thx
Excellent video! She knows what she is talking about - and does it well. 👍
Exactly the lesson I have needed (for some time!) as I’ve always struggled to nail down those three structures - mostly because I rarely hear them being said! Evidently it’s the shorter, colloquial versions that tend to be used. So a big thank you from me. ¿A quien lo habría pensado?
Esta es una lección brillante. Ahora he aprendido cómo agregar pronombres en estructuras hipotéticas del pasado. Muchisimas gracias
EXELENTE EXPLICACIÓN
thanks for sharing this
Great video!
I love this channel
Thank you for making this video! These phrases have been a key part of advancing my conversational Spanish. They come in very handy and I use them all of the time now. Conversations with my tutors have much better flow.
we are so glad our videos have been helpful for you!
Debería haberte encontrado antes 🎉
gracias. super helpful.
For the last one, I asked a guy from Colombia one time, and he said "podíamos haberte ayudado" is also OK (i.e., the imperfect instead of conditional or preterite). He said all three options sounded acceptable to him. I don't know how widespread that is, I have only one datapoint.
Que chido!
Nicely explained very easy to listen to voice
loved what you did. Need more street-talk. Thank you 😄
Great video - thanks I am normally not a great fan of learning spanish in english but this clarified things for me very well thanks again. Saludos desde el reino unido!! Debería haber sabido que sería bueno!
Debería haber estudiado mas, pero me alegro encontré este videos
Deberías haber publicado este video más temprano😮Muchísimas gracias, de verda❤🙏🙏
That lesson was tight and on point, no foolishness.
Te beso te abrazo te abrabeso. Love this
Yeah like @imperfectlyrational *basically* said I am here for the vibes too in a way.
I need to learn Spanish but I am an author and I want to showcase representation. As authentically as possible. So this looks like exactly what I am looking for.
Yo podría sido visto otro video pero este es más mejor. ¡Gracias!
Thanks 🙏🏾
Just discovered your videos, thank you! That's the thing I hate about Spanish is there are a gazillion ways to say the same thing. And when you think you are on the right track you hear someone say that nobody talks like that in real life... So you still don't understand what people are saying despite all you know... And learning alone, I think you have a video on that, is quite challenging for me since I'm not good at setting up structure so I learn a little and then forget it anyway. Thanks again, appreciate what you do.
I think there’s a gazillion ways to say the same thing in every language. The only way to know how people actually talk, in my opinion, is just to listen to people talk a lot… That way you get used to hearing people talk and know what sounds natural just like you learned in your native language. It takes 100’s of hours of listening though. If native content is challenging, look into comprehensible input! @dreamingspanish is a good place to start
tutorial excelente.. mg
¡Qué explicaciones más útiles! Ya había encontrado las versiones más comunes de esas expresiones, pero tus precisiones y los ejemplos que utilices dejarán huellas dondo antes había solo confusión. ¡Gracias!
¡Debería haber encontrado tu canal mucho antes!
This is like .. perfect ..
Excellent video, this is how we normally speak, at least in Mexico. Kudos!
Muchas gracias por el video, habria estudiado mejor si hubiera sabido esto, con menos confusio'n. I have often wrestled with the issue of whether these types of phrases should be framed in the (past) subjunctive or in the mostly 'taught' conditional and never really had a satisfactory answer from teachers other than '"it is what it is" - "don't over think it" blah blah! You have helped enormously by showing that its about flexibility. I feel like I have broken free of a restrictive problem, so cheers to you, saludos Steve
I recently came up on this channel and started listening. The format is great for a beginner as the explanation is done in English and the Spanish words and phrases are also translated. However I don't understand why the speaker has to speak the Spanish part so fast, as I feel the audience is in a learning phase. I had to reduce speed ot 0.75x in some cases 😂😂😂. Overall it's a good channel and hope it continues it's videos!
podrías haberme dado más ejemplos. Muy utile video y muchas gracias.
¡Esta lección no podría haber sido mejor!
"No podría ser mejor" or "no pudo haber sido mejor"

Can you do a video on “If x would have happened, then y could have happened,” etc?
