Neil IS Legend ,Well,everywhere.
First have to say Niel Young is Godfather of Grundge. Grunge songs feature sludgy guitar riffs with plenty of effects pedals, melancholy lyrics, and an ambient, reverberated sound, along with plenty of unusual techniques such as alternating time signatures, diminished and unusual chords, dissonance, and very, very powerful vocals. Niel was doing this in the late 60's. His influence wouldn't start the Grundge movement until the late 80's centered around Seattle. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden are some first big hitters in the movement. All influenced by Niel. Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder gave Niel the moniker Godfather of Grundge at MTV music awards in '93 backing Rockin' in a Free World album. A great story withore to read into. Check it out sometime, worth digging into Niel. You will see influences he has on many bands today and back in the day.

I would not consider Niel folk rock. He's more close to hard rock/country. I read an interview regarding his Harvest album. He was asked what style or genre was it written, composed, and produced. He simply replied "hard country". I've never heard that used before. And only thing I can say is he referring to outlaw country or alternative country? I can see him being mixed in with the Man in Black, or Mighty Merle. Man this would be a great collaboration think Chris Stapleton and Neil Young. Or even just co-writer a genius masterpiece.

Neil may be a legend in Canada but in the US Neil is a God.. My all time favorite artist. I play his songs , even built my own 1959 Fender tweed deluxe clone tube amplifier.
@Doug Sawyer Dude. I built my own 1959 Fender Tweed deluxe clone tube amplifier so I can Grung out to Rocking in the Free world. Some one once quoted Neil's guitar tone is like a jet engine in a hurricane.
This is a song written about his bandmates Crosby Stills and Nash and his time with them. Their immense success lead to massive drug use and softened them a bit, made them a bit lazy....(note the cocaine references about crystal canyons and blades). Neil still had a ways to go and didn't want to be dragged down. Basically a story about him leaving CSN.
Plus a metric fuck-ton of bile. It's a suicide note by proxy.
He was never a part of CSN. When he played alongside them they were Crosby Stills Nash & Young. So he was kind of an occasional bandmate, who never left his solo career that he started after Buffalo Springfield where he was a band mate with not only Stephen Stills but also Rick James. (I'm totally serious there look it up.)

I've been a Neil Young fan since he was in Buffalo Springfield. It blows my mind that ppl haven't listened to his music. I like his acoustic stuff but his rockers on electric guitar are my faves. He may not be a very technical guitarist but man he plays with so much feeling on the electric guitar.
I saw Neil play this song in 1978 during The Rust Never Sleeps tour
at the L.A. Forum. Better late than never for these kids.

back in the 70's....Rust Never Sleeps-concert was my introduction to any Live Concert....to have a copy of that event was a treasure for music lovers then......and even NOW..for me...listening to it.....relives and revives my youth! Country Girl is one of the greatest songs of all time!!! Definitely my favorite CSNY song and it's also in my list of top 3 fav Neil Young songs. If the woman in this video loves the harmonica she'll *love* the last section of Country Girl.

What, you've never heard of Neil Young - the legendary Neil Young, our Toronto Boy - (ok just north of Toronto) , member of CSNY, Buffalo Springfield etc. - No matter, discover - it's a great journey.

Never too late really. Neil is one of the greatest singer-songwriters of all time. He's good at country, rock, folk, blues, grunge and experimental music.
Jeez you's guys :P Dylan was such a big deal in the sixties. And in his later years he was awarded the Nobel prize for literature, for his brilliant career of songs. Also he wrote memoirs but mostly it's his SONGS. Oh so glad you loved this NEIL song!!!! His earliest band Buffalo Springfield hat hits in 60s. Then he was in Crosby Stills Nash and Young which had HUGE hits you will Recognize
I've had a fascination with this song since I bought the cassette in HS. I agree it's referring to parting ways with CSN. I find the lyrics very poetic and moving even if I can't make sense of every line. Strike out on your own, keep producing. Ultimately it all will be grinded up and consumed by others, but you know you did what you could.
Lots of connection between Neil and Dylan who admire each other. Grew up a few hundred miles away on opposites sides of the border.
Powderfinger is one of his greatest songs.
.. This album called 'Rust Never Sleeps' has one side acoustic & one side full on Rock. It's what defines Young from other 70s 'singer-songwriters' .. dude, could Rock Out w/ the best of them & write acoustic, introspective tunes about the history of America that will melt your souls.

You should listen to the song "After the Goldrush". He recorded it 9 years earlier with a lot less baggage from his whirlwind career. 15 years after this album (Rust Never Sleep) he wrote a tribute to Kurt Cobain called "Change Your Mind" and live versions are brutal. Kurt quoted Neil in his 'suicide note'.

Good old American feel by a Canadian....
Neil writes music about and from the country - the farms and the land. It's not country music - it's music about the country - it may refer to things that went down in LA but his time spent in Manitoba, rural Ontario and on his ranch in California is what this music sounds like to me.
Well that was a blast from the past. We would play this LP over and over at my girl friends house. Everyone would hang out in the basement playing darts and sneaking beer at her dads bar and having a good time This whole album is epic. Thrasher is such a great song you would not usually hear as a reaction so kudos to yous. Powderfinger is my favorite off the LP. My My, Hey hey(out of the blue) is Acoustic and Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black) Is Electric Both are a MUST. Enjoy 💗🤘.

There's this very clear divide of what music sounded like and its lyrical component before Bob Dylan and what music was like after Bob Dylan he changed the game, The lyric structure and rhyming patterns are very bob Dylanesque and it sounds like Dylans 1965 song "love Minus Zero/No Limit". Neil young is a very talented singer songwriter in his own right in the folk rock arena

The Bob Dylan comparison is very appropriate for this, I was thinking it reminded me a lot of Mr. Tambourine Man.
As a guitar player, I recommend listening to Neil Young's. "Cowgirl In The Sand". Shows some of his early electric guitar sounds, kind of quirky, but you get an idea of the "grundge" sound.

The lines about knowing he'd had enough, burned his credit card, and 'headed out to where the pavement turns to sand' is about how he felt with C,S,N,Y's "Deja Vu" and his own "Harvest", he was right in the middle of the mainstream, which is what can kill the ambition, drive and edge of so many artists; thinking they've made it and can start to coast. As he said, when you're at the point, you can either stay in the middle of the road, or head for the ditch. So he went for the ditch (he even called one of his next and edgiest albums "On the Beach", speaking of 'turns to sand'). He said it's a rougher ride, but you meet more interesting people. That's Neil, in a very real nutshell.

Yea Neil is a true original - from thundering electric to this. late 1960's to now. it'd take an encyclopedia to list the gems. 'hurricane' - electric.' Pocahontas' - acoustic
Neil did ALL kinds of music. Buffalo Springfield was his first big band. Then Crosby, Stills, Nash and YOung while he continued to create solo projects. Personally I don't think Thrasher is a great intro to Neil. He is legendary. So legendary that Bob Dylan showed up at the door of the house he grew up in in Winnipeg Manitoba and asked if he could come in and see Neil's bedroom. Dylan said he wanted to see what Neil looked at out the window when he was a kid. From rock 'Cinnamon Girl' 'Keep on Rockin' in the Free World' to gorgeous beautiful melodies 'Old Man', "Helpless' (with CSNY), to orchestral works "A Man Needs A Maid', 'Expecting to Fly' (Buffalo Springfield)...Neil can do it ALL. OHIO was a song written within days of the Kent State shootings in May 1970 - four students killed by national guard - a tragic situation. The song was released by CSNY within DAYS of the shooting. In the 60's music as a huge proponent of societal change...I don't hear that today...or am I not listening in the right places??? Thanks for your video!

There's a back story to this song. It's largely about how he felt about Crosby, Stills & Nash at the time. He was saying they blew it with all the promise to be huge, making great albums together for years, sometimes with Young. He saw them as becoming lazy, spoiled rock stars who believed too much of the hype. That and tons of drugs; esp. Crosby. As I call them, Groggy, Pills & Hash.

The Needle and the Damage Done is amazing and emotional
Many like Neil Young's electric guitar work--which is quite unique and recognizable. He was my favorite artist for many years growing up, being in middle and high school from the early to mid-1970s. As a guitarist myself for many decades I can say that his true "forte" as a artist is first his songwriting (lyrics especially, using a lot of symbolism) and then his acoustic (steel string) guitar work. You get both of those pieces of him in this song.
You really really need to listen to more Neil Young. Some of his songs you should do on your show are, Powderfinger, Old Man, Heart of Gold, Like A Hurricane, Ambulance Blues and Ohio. Ohio is the most important song ever written, it's about the Kent State Massacre in Ohio in 1970. Neil will accompany you to an entirely different reality. He wrote Powderfinger for Lynyrd Skynrd to record, but they were killed in a plane crash before they got a chance to record it.
This is not the song I would have used to introduce you to Neal Young. You should recognize the he was part of Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young. Start with Our House and then Cathedral. Then try Down by the River and Cinnamon Girl with Crazy Horse. Then listen to Neil Young’s Harvest album. the title track is very good. Heart of Gold was popular, but my favorites from that album are the last two tracks-The needle and the Damage Done and Words. Lastly, you should listen to Alabama, which inspired Leonard Skynard’s rebuttal, Sweet Home Alabama. You might call this music simple-it is generally in 4/4 or 3/4 time with simple chord progressions. But it is emotionally supercharged. That does not come from simple times. Rather, it comes from turbulent times-the Vietnam war, Nixon Administration, etc. Keep on listening. I enjoy watching your reactions.
"Thrasher" is another word for the big harvesting combines that harvest wheat or corn.

Neil's folky acoustic stuff is great and I feel if you're just starting with Neil you have to listen to ALL of Harvest. It's simply an incredible album; brings tears to my eyes. Rust never sleeps is great but Live Rust ('79) is phenomenal. Like a Hurricane being a standout track - this track moves you and sticks to your soul. Fast fwd a decade to Ragged Glory - Over and Over is a juggernaut, the guitar tone and solos are mind blowing on that song man!!!
Believe it or not, a reaction of yours that I haven't seen. Neil Young is a master songwriter and storyteller. Many months later, maybe you could do more Neil. Maybe "Cortez the Killer."

This is only one side of Neil Young - the storyteller - only him, his guitar, his harmonica, he has Songs where he extends this up to 30 minutes … But the one Neil Young song you really should have heard is HEART OF GOLD, it's a "everybody knows it - song " :-) The other Neil is playing a real fuzzy e-guitar, good examples are Like a hurricane or Hey hey my my (into the black) … the other hey hey my my (out of the blue) is acoustic , both from the same Album than Thrasher. I personally enjoy the Electric Neil after 2 - 3 beers :-)

Nice to see you discovered Neil Young. Great first reaction. He has so many great songs. To get a real feel for his spirit check out "Pocahontas". Also check out the group Buffalo Springfield the he was a part of in the 60's.

I’m a huge fan and I would love to see you guys do some more of his songs, there are tons of great ones I could suggest but you might as well start with some of the most famous ones like “Old Man” for his folk side or “Cinnamon Girl” to hear how he can rock!
Cinnamon Girl is a SUPER SONG that to me is is an automatic top 10 hit!

Also, Neil Youngs Zuma and On the Beach albums are totally underrated releases of his with soft ballads and heavy rock mixes.

LOL :) IT'S INSANELY GOOD TIMELESS MUSIC SO I'D SAY TO DO FOR STARTERS ( OLD MAN AND HEART OF GOLD OFF THE BBC SHOW! :)
