The old man was the care taker of a ranch Neil had purchased. Their talks were the inspiration for the song.

---- Neil Young is great! One of the all-time greats!
---- He has the distinction of being elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame TWICE, once as a solo artist and again as a member of Buffalo Springfield (this band was one of the bands that led to the development of folk rock that was influenced by English and American folk music)
---- Another great song that you should definitely do with your wife is Harvest Moon. The song is about how Neil is still in love with his wife and how he still loves to dance with her. In the video you see Neil singing with his band and then there are cuts of him dancing with his wife and later kissing her when they get into the car to drive away from the establishment they had been dancing within: ruclips.net/video/n2MtEsrcTTs/видео.html

Peter Gabriel wrote this song about his departure from the band Genesis to start his solo career. It marked a major shift in his life and career, and the beginning of an amazing body of work. Please listen to Biko, from the same album. It is about the South African anti apartheid activist Steve Biko, who died in police custody. It is very moving, when you understand the meaning.

You HAVE to watch the show “Laurel Canyon” a documentary style show about all the musicians goin to LA in the 60s and 70s and all wind up being neighbors in Laurel Canyon cause it was cheap to rent places. New bands got together and broke up and got together with other people in the canyon and you’ll really really enjoy the history of so many musicians you’ve heard of. And Jackson Browne is like 17 yrs old and a prolific poet and songwriter. AND a heartthrob!!! Why crosby stills and nash brought in neil young. How Glen Frey began with Linda Ronstadt before creating the Eagles. And so much more…

Are you beginning to understand why we Boomers are so critical of today's popular music?

    • @hazmania
      @hazmania 11 месяцев назад +33

With good reason. So much is rubbish, no poetical or lyrical mastery, barely literate to be honest, and far too much use of electrical gizmos to auto tune the voice, the instruments. Summed up as many “artists” can’t actually sing in tune, can’t play any instruments, or can barely play one, and couldn’t write beautiful, meaningful lyrics if they tried. Obviously there are exceptions (like REN, Dimash, Aurora, Oliver Anthony) but mainly the criticism is fully justified. Annie, Cornwall, UK 🙂🌸

Neil has so many great songs to recommend. He started out in a band called "Buffalo Springfield" and wrote and sang "Mr Soul". Some other songs are "Cinnamon Girl" and "Everybody Knows This Nowhere" and "Down By the River". His albums from the early 70s include "After the Gold Rush" and "Harvest" albums which rank are up there with the best in rock. Check out "Don't Let It Bring You Own" and "Southern Man".

I love this intimate performance with just Neil & his guitar (harmonica). He was only 27 when he recorded this song as a young man. Now he is an older man at 77 years old. Neil is a very talented musician, singer & songwriter. He was with the groups Buffalo Springfield & Crosby, Stills & Nash in the later 60's. Also had his own group with Crazy Horse for a few years. Neil went solo & has had so many great songs over the years. The albums "After The Gold Rush" & "Harvest" from the 70's are considered 2 of his best.

He meandered all over the stage playing all the different instruments. As someone who grew up with this man's music, it felt like a great honor to see it live. The album "Rust Never Sleeps" is a great example of Neil Young's immense talent. This is where the "godfather of grunge'" really takes hold. but its a beautiful album and timely, coming out of the post punk period, mostly recorded live but presented as a studio album, it is full of raw beauty. The album as a vinyl disc has an acoustic oriented side and an electric side and it's a great example of Young's songwriting and playing. Favourite songs? just start at the beginning.

Went to a Neil Young concert in Tampa, Fl early '80's. Many microphones were set up around in a circle on the stage and each one had a different instrument at it. Neil walked up to the first microphone, picked up the instrument, played a segment of music with it and walked on to the next microphone where he did the same. Once he'd played all the instruments, they played all the music together and he sang to it. I hope I have explained this well enough to do him justice. It was an amazing evening.

To get the perfect two sides of Neil Young you might consider reacting to his songs "My My Hey Hey (Out of the Blue" and "Hey Hey My My (Into the Black) IN THAT ORDER, in one video, which hasn't been reacted to like that, but should be. The studio versions, though they were actually recorded live for the album Rust Never Sleeps. That will give you everything you need to know about what he's capable of.

I would love to see the reaction to the first 10 seconds of the second song. And it would be interesting to see if anyone gets the reference to Elvis and the line about burning out as opposed to fading away, then name dropping Johnny Rotten. That album from 1979 was the culmination of maybe the most amazing period of music from an artist after the Beatles. It's why Rolling Stone named Neil Young Artist of the Decade, and that was back when that actually meant something. @@papacarl2002

Sebs, your wife is beautiful. She has a natural beauty…beautiful in an evening gown and beautiful in sweats with her hair pulled up and no make up I would imagine. Even more, she’s not arrogant! That makes her even prettier! Looks like you hit the jackpot!

Neil is just a genius songwriter. He's got soooo many greats songs. I saw him solo in about 1983, and it's still one of the greatest shows I've ever seen. He's unbelievably talented.... Neil sings in falsetto all the time because he doesn't like his regular voice.

Neil is such a talent. So much versatility, talent and lyrical genius. If you want a glimpse of the bridge to grunge check out "Out of the Blue and into the Black" or his work with Crazy Horse. You will really enjoy Neil Young. His lyrics make you think about life and how you live it. It is liberating to live that lyric "It doesn't mean that much to me, to mean that much to you". Live for yourself and be your best self. GOD will take care of the rest if you are living for GOD.

Neil Young Gave The Band, CSN&Y his song, "Expecting To Fly," right before he quit the band. Crosby later said he felt stupid for being surprised at Neil's departure, as he said goodbye in the song.

If you are baffled that Paul McCartney was voted as the #2 greatest songwriter of all time (which most people would say is too low), then I think the rabbit hole you should be going down is the Beatles. And while it's true that Neil Young was a massive influence on Pearl Jam and many other Grunge artists, Kurta Cobain's favorite music was Punk Rock and the Beatles. Paul McCartney and John Lennon taught the world how to write popular songs.
    Peace

I don't know where to start. I should write a book about my experience with Neil and his music. I was 19 when I first heard one of Neil's songs. When I say one of Neil's songs, because I went to a dance hall in Houston one summer night in '70, and a very popular local rock / psychedelic band was performing - Fever Tree. As I walked in, they were playing "Nowadays Clancy Cant Even Sing".... As I walked around the place, something about those lyrics and kudos to Michael Keller the lead singer. He had such a raspy bluesy voice, the lyrics just seem to capture my attention. At the end of the night and as an encore they performed the song again and this time I was at the side of stage, totally mesmerized by the song. It was a few months later, as I was listening on the radio, a broadcast of Neil at Royce Hall, that I found out it was his song! Before that evening I thought it was one of Fever Tree's. That evening, Jan. 30, 1971, my birthday, became a major game changer for me. That concert of Neil's and especially when he sung Sugar Mountain was THAT moment in my life that took me in a musical direction I am so blessed to have experienced the 7 decades with Neil and so many others from that era. Sebs, if you do a deep dive into Neil's music, its going to be a very deep dive. His discography is immense! However that being said, there is a song he performed on his Live Weld album, in '91, that's actually a cover of his dear friend.... Bob Dylan. Its "Blowin in the Wind" His guitar playing, the soulful emotion he puts into that song is other- worldly. If there ever will be a song and how its performed by Neil on that album, to become a global anthem for world peace it would be his electric version of Bob's prophetic lyrics. Peace out

Neil Young caused a bit of a dust up with Lynyrd Skynyrd after he released a song called Southern Man.
Ronnie Van Zant of Skynyrd took it as a shot at the Southern people, as Young said the old South way of life represented everything he was against.
Young also released a song called Alabama which he claims was not directly a shot at the people of Alabama.
Van Zant called it shooting all the ducks when you disagree with only a couple.
Skynyrd answered with Sweet Home Alabama, which included lyrics "I hope Neil Young will remember, a southern man don't need him around anyhow"
