Hi Dan, as a fellow vegetarian myself, this review is indeed helpful. At least I know what I would expect if I were to fly with China Southern. I wanna know though if you have flown with Air China in business? I could not find a video from your list. 😅
3:20 So basically, this is a trend in most narrow-body aircraft operated by Asian airlines, ideally the Airbus A320 family and Boeing 737s. This is done in the event of an equipment swap, such as going from a wide-body down to a narrow-body and vice versa, such that the airline does not have to issue new boarding passes to every single passenger and re-seat everyone.
China Southern and China Eastern are famous for bad in-flight dining experiences among big mainland carriers. Air China’s appetizer&dessert cart (similar to Lufthansa) and Xiamen Airline’s 3-star Michelin restaurant curated menu are definitely the top of the game right now. Sichuan Airlines and Hainan Airlines also have many special food options with regional flairs based their home city.
As someone who grew up in China and flew both domestically and internationally with many of their carriers I'm glad that they're finally catching up in terms of consistent quality and well delivered product. In the past and arguably still to an extent in the present, Chinese airlines were plagued with corporate & government connected corruption, as well as regionalism since it's a source of pride for the leaders of various cities and provinces (thus why you see different provincial airlines like Xiamen Airlines, Shanghai Airlines, Shenzhen Airlines, Hainan airlines, etc. today). The service has always been friendly and excellent as China places a heavy emphasis on the selection of their cabin crews, (some metrics going as far as having standards of body type, height, appearance, etc.) but a decade ago the language barrier was still an issue given many ground service crew and some flight crew didn't speak English that well and communicating with foreigners became very difficult. In addition, many aircraft were in a 2-2-2 business configuration. However, today, with upgraded products like what you just flew with a 1-2-1 configuration all with direct asile access, improved catering, and the same great hospitality, I have faith that Chinese airlines will be more attractive for flyers in the future. The main thing is for these airlines to improve their digital infrastructure (websites for ease of bookings by international travelers) and increased availability of their flights via reward flights which can make flying with them easier, as well as making themselves more accessible to a larger audience.
The China southern in flight meal doesn’t look as bad as you said. The taste suits southern Chinese taste rather than international is probably why … all the meals you showed just speaks comfort to me 🥹🥹 I would totally cry if an airline served red bean soup for me. The last time I took juneyao domestic and they served me congee for breakfast I cried bc i loved it😭
I got food poisoning at one of the Bali lounges…. It was a ‘great’ trip back home… luckily the flight attendants on SQ were very alert and kept one toilet always clear for me on the long haul from sin to zrh….
Just took the 787 from China southern last week. As you shared, service was amazing but catering can be better! Upgrade at check-in is worth it as well because it probably cost less than 500usd to J class.
I've been following you for years and I'm really glad that Oskar is now a fixture on the channel. So much better seeing you do these as a couple. Oh, and while I am an omnivore I am always looking at menus to see what the vegetarian/vegan options are. I live in Portland, Oregon so there is a lot of focus here on plant-based eating. When you said you wanted vegetarian my first thought was, oh no, you needed to ask for vegan. Um, wait. This is China. No difference between the two. 🤣
Did you know that most Chinese people who had took a China Southern flight ,especially domestic flights, called the Airline “Cheap Southern Airlines ”,not because it’s cheap,it’s the meal they provide. You can't say that the meal is eatable, you can only say that it's “hard to swallow”.
That 757 from China southern you showed in the video, is no registered G-LSAI! Flying around in the UK for holiday airlines Jet2. She is the oldest passenger 757 left in the world! Unfortunately she's being retired and scrapped in January.
Hi Dan!! It's nice to see you tried out another Chinese airline, It is the best Chinese airline in my opinion. I only fly China southern in China because the on board service. Don't be so surprised, Chinese full service airline all provide slippers, magazines and meal option in business or first. I think it is because the competition is so tough in China so the airlines provide even more service. I wish you have a great experience with other China Southern flights. Fly safe!!
06:00 - Sorry to break it to you guys, but I think your flight attendant knew EXACTLY who you were and therefore behaved accordingly. Not trying to be a cynic here, but any airline worth their salt most definitely keeps a list of the more popular flight reviewers. The flight crew would have therefore known you would be on board and stepped up the service level in response. This is precisely what a good marketing department is supposed to do for their company.
@@NonstopDan I understand, but none of what you've said precludes my theory from being true. You could still be known to the crew even if you've never flown with China Southern before. All it takes is your name matching on their internal list of popular RUclips flight reviewers when you check in, and the entire crew swings into action. Popularity cuts both ways my friend - it's not just us av-geeks that watch your videos, but the marketing departments of all the major airlines as well.
I don't think so, because air travel in China is not as common and normal as in the United States, so Chinese airlines pay much attention to the service of first class/business class. I have also flown in the first class of China Southern Airlines, just like the one in his video, and the service I received is the same. The flight attendants of Chinese airlines are required to be familiar with the passenger's information such as last name. In China, there is indeed a list called VIP and VVIP, but those are usually important government members who will enjoy extra special services on board.
Better flight than I had. I flew from Beijing to NYC. Everybody brought their own food and was stuffing themselves. Then we hit bad turbulence and they were all, I mean ALL, throwing up. It was absolutely mental.
@@composimple364and China Southern doesn’t even fly between Beijing and New York. They only fly to JFK from their Guangzhou hub. Currently only Air China flies to JFK from Beijing.
I've actually been to that lounge in Guangzhou when we were flying to the Uk to see family for the first time in three years because covid restrictions had just lifted in China. We booked it as an extra to our regular economy ticket so we didn't get the full expereince. At the time (Chinese new years 2023) the airport was basically empty, restrictions had only been lifted for a month or two up until that point, and so there werent many staff. The lounge was basically empty, and no one was manning the bar, we asked someone and they said help yourself! Slept like a baby on the flight after 3 very boozy rum and cokes! Good times.
And you've not even tried the regular economy! Full meals on a 2 hour flight. Also allowed to bring 2 checked in bags plus a carry on and a backpack. Service with China Southern is insanely good!
Great to see an in depth video from you @NonstopDan as there were very few videos showing the business experience on China Southern. Would recommend for anyone going from UK to Eastern regions as a business ticket may only be a few hundred more than an economy ticket on another mainstream airline! I flew China Southern business class from the UK to Sydney in Nov last year and can attest to the wonderful service on board. The cabin crew on the way back recognised me from the trip on the way there and gave such a warm welcome! Food on board was also great. The lounge was also a treat for a long layover - tip: if you are there for a long stop, ask to use their rest rooms. My dad and I used these for 4hrs of sleep and it made the journey back to the UK so much more bearable! They clean and change the sheets between guests and it was the standard of a decent hotel in these rooms. You have to ask for them though, they’re not freely offered!
That review is so accurate. The reason that business class starts at 5 is because in Chinese 4 is written as 四 and pronounced “si”but there is 死 which pronounced in same way but means die. I personally experienced that economy row starts at something like seat 24 and not 1 that’s why the last row is 81
Dan, I lived in Guangzhou my whole life and flown CZ more times than I could remember, and their services and standards have been on a down slope, China Southern airlines are considered the King of Low Cost Airlines in China now
Good thing they removed the cell phone ban in 2018. Back in 2017 when I flew China Southern, I wasn't allowed to switch on my phone at all, not even in flight mode.
I flew business class China Eastern over Easter and the food was actually pretty decent. Printed menus with “western” and traditional options. Much better than what you saw on China Southern. I’m flying China Southern in a couple weeks on the same jets. Looking forward to comparing. (6H & 6C) How long was your layover? They suggest they have some easy pass thru for connections but if you have to go back through security… that doesn’t seem efficient. Thanks Dan!
Unfotunately I was served by a very lazy Southern China crew member a few weeks ago. In short she played tricks so some passengers didn't order drinks and she left out cake and icecream. I found out because later I saw what others were eating. And this is business class. I do agree with Dan there are many great things about this airline. Pricing is hard to beat.
Great review, as always Dan! I started to fly China Southern regularly as its an affordable option in business class from kazakhstan to China. I also feel that the crew is very very lovely while the only downside is the meal and drink selection. Having flown all major carriers in business, i adore the China Southern crew which i would have never imagined saying. I received 3 warm towels from my flight from Shanghai to Beijing which is a record for me :-D
As a Chinese living in America, I feel like Chinese carriers are a bit like American carriers. They are all too big to be sophisticated and cater specifically to their domestic customers. For example my dad would choose Chinese carrier every day in his life because he knows there is always hot tea on board. Their business model is just too different from international carriers such as Emirates or Turkish Airlines which serve mainly transiting customers.
Great video once again, thanks for bring us with your journey. Look forward to your Guangzhou videos one day, my new home next year moving from Toronto. Please visit various China cities as I think you would enjoy.
24:43 Dan it’s crazy I’ve been binging some of your old videos and you’ve been served that identical vegetarian entree on JAL and SQ and you haven’t loved it any time 😭
Dan, you inspired me to take a trip from from Taipei to Doha in China Southern business class. I'm in Doha now. The flight attendant on my flight from Taipei also took the slippers out of the bag and laid them out. On the long haul, the purser insisted that I put on the slippers right away because they would be more comfortable. The food was pretty good, better than Polaris and not quite as good as Cathay Pacific. I hope we can meet up in Taipei some time!
Dan ur literally my favorite to watch always enjoyable always want to fly on the airlines u give great reviews to ill definitely add this airline to my list of lists
Wow, I played cricket for Forest Row CC for two seasons (last year of that tenure i was captain of the Sunday seconds and we started the ad hoc Saturday team which became part of the development league) and went to cub camp at Broadstone Warren twice too as a kid when I was in London. Very good video Dan. The Chinese carriers are really getting more and more competitive. But the food is not the best.
something abt the color accent in the cabin looking like worn out, retro yellow hue just basically offwhite and beige with blue combination is so cool 😭
Hey Dan, great video! The service you got is the normal in business class in China i.e greeting by name, storing your luggage, opening your slippers etc. Hainan Airlines and Shenzhen Airlines have the best service in my opinion. But hopefully you won’t travel any more Chinese business class in the future because once you get used to that service (spoiled) you’ll never want to travel western airlines again😂. Ha det gott! // A Swede in China
I flew with CS before, they were super nice with my kids, service and attitude was excellent too. However, you were right on their food, that they should put more effort on it.
This is crazy. I live in Guangzhou, and had a trip to the UK earlier this year. I converted taking my first ever business class flight, so tried to look on RUclips to see if it would be worth it. That led me to subscribing to you! And when I did get the flight, I also got seat 11a 😂
I can’t say I’ve ever had a bad experience on a Chinese airline (and I’ve flown them all more or less), and had many excellent flights. Low-cost airlines like Urumqi Air are not great - but China Southern, China Eastern, Xiamen Air, Hainan, Tianjin… have all been excellent to me. One of the best short haul business class flights I’ve ever taken was on Shenzhen Airlines. And domestically within China in particular - business class flights are cheap to compete with the high speed rail and punch well above their weight. Service is universally great, though mistranslations do occur which makes everything more amusing. Food is almost always oriented towards Chinese tastes, but what they serve is usually not a bad representation of the dish. And there are often various cultural quirks that can seem odd. HNA group for example very rarely turns off the seatbelt sign on long haul flights, so you just kind of have to know when to ignore it.
Ever since taking Southern Airline for short haul flight, I've been constantly going back to them for my flights. I'll still choose them over Malaysia Airlines (which is what I usually take) and Singapore Airlines.
Im filipino and my favorite ones are china southern and cathay. These two chinese airlines are the best! Specially southern coz its affordable and i was blown with their service.
This was by far one of your better videos. It’s extremely difficult to get the level of service on ANY other airline than what you got on China Southern. I really hope that Rebecca got a huge increase in her pay for the downright exceptional service she provided you and Oskar.
I love your videos, keep your work Dan. Can you review Turkish Airlines's Business class (Boeing 787 or Airbus A350) or Comparing Business class on US big 3 (United vs Delta vs American) I think it would be interesting
I fly China Southern a lot and i think their service is really good for the price. They have some Narrow bodys with only 4 seats in Business class and they feel so premium compare to all other airlines some high end like Qatar.
The meal with Qatar Airways was weird too from DOH to MIA, we left at 2am, and land in Miami at 4:30pm. The last meal they offered was also a "breakfast" lol
I recently took a Turkish airlines flight at the back of the business cabin. They'd go back to refill welcome drink chioces and bread choices often, so I always have the full array of choices even though I was at the back of the cabin.
I kind of like the vintage look of chinese airlines. It's a good mix of not too vintage but not super sleak and modern either. It's just a nice in between.
Great video content of the airline that I've been flying since I was a kid. It's a pity that their a380s were retired under the strike of covid, but fortunately their 787-9s and a350s are in great position and definitely a huge upgrade of their fleet. I nearly had a chance to fly their 757 but it was swapped to a 737 the day before departure😭.
I'm not so sure about the Monopoly fact? LGW to PVG is operated by both Air China and China Eastern. And LHR to Beijing is China Southern and Air China (different airports in Beijing though).
Service tends to be amazing in CN carriers and is very personable. At times too much especially for elite members as they are big complainers lol. But so far I'd say hardware is often upsetting, and sometimes the food is bad. I am amazed by a good English-speaking crew on a CN flight as well: I have been translating for them all the time. They tend to thank me profusely and try to offer me something (i.e. extra bottles of water, food, souvenir) haha
Whenever I take long flight with my parents I get to enjoy business or first class with them because they would pay for my ticket. Chinese airlines have the best service for sure!
Flew them a month ago. Despite getting to Guangzhou with plenty of time, we circled and circled and circled and eventually landed out in the arse end of the airport, next to what looked like a maintenance hanger. With about 45 minutes until our connecting flight and a 15 minute drive to the terminal we were given stickers and told to high tail it through the airport through immigration, "HURRY!" They were pushing people in front of us, only to realise that the existing people in the security line were the same people who were being pushed through for the Bali flight. "HURRY!" We ran and ran and ran and made it to the OPPOSITE END of the airport with 5 minutes left and got onto the connecting flight. Sure, we were in Economy, but the hard product was decent and, like yourself, the food wasn't anything to write home about, and the crew were functioning but not very welcoming - I would likely fly them again, but only if the price was unbeatable. Our return flight was with Thai and that was fantastic in comparison; the warmth of the crew, tasty food and the Thai 777 layout was just more comfortable in comparison to the China Southern 787.

CE's International flights especially on the 777 and 787 has some of the most insane economic meals I've ever eaten so it's not that bad.
the hilarious part about this is that xiamenair is majority owned by china southern

Thanks for giving the flight attendant such great feedback - it’s nice to see such good service 😊

a lesser-known airline with more than 900 aircrafts = =😅
this video has just been so fulfilling to watch haha, love your videos :) !
Thanks so much 🙏
Thanks for this lovely video
something abt the color accent in the cabin looking like worn out, retro yellow hue just basically offwhite and beige with blue combination is so cool 😭
What a wonderful flight to just read a book. Love it. 💙
Awesome review Dan!!!! It was weird seeing the Lufthansa A350 in Guangzhou.
I flew AirChina from Hanoi to Beijing, one of the best flights I've been on!
Okay, that was a SMOOTH transition to the ad!
This is crazy. I live in Guangzhou, and had a trip to the UK earlier this year. I converted taking my first ever business class flight, so tried to look on RUclips to see if it would be worth it. That led me to subscribing to you! And when I did get the flight, I also got seat 11a 😂
wish you a good flight
Nice work lads. Love Rebecca 😊
She's amazing!
I love your videos ❤ as always W vid
Thank you!
You should try some of the intercontinental routes on China Eastern’s A350 or Hainan Airlines 787!😂
The population of Guangzhou is just under 15 million, loved the review again though. Keep it up. Plus loved the Gudie map in the lounge.
So glad you enjoyed the video!
Thanks for this vlog. Wow. Fly safe. Have an amazing week. Cheers. 👍🛫🛬
Thanks, you too!
@ I appreciate it. Thank you.
China Southern, always the best service. And before 2020, they had some of the best prices.
I love your videos, keep your work Dan.
Can you review Turkish Airlines's Business class (Boeing 787 or Airbus A350) or Comparing Business class on US big 3 (United vs Delta vs American)
I think it would be interesting
you had me at ABSOLUTELY SLAPS
10:27 There’s my regional airport! Guess where it is
DanOs, how are you guys doing? Love the video. Happy and safe travel. X Mandy
Thanks so much Mandy! 🙏
Nice! I've always wanted to see what inside the China Southen VIP bus is like!
OMG, Forest Row? I lived in East Grinstead most of my teenage years, (1984 to 1990). Hung out in FR all the time. Did you go to Michael Hall?!
Yes hahaha! Michael Hall in the early 00s!
I fly China Southern a lot and i think their service is really good for the price. They have some Narrow bodys with only 4 seats in Business class and they feel so premium compare to all other airlines some high end like Qatar.
I Like That Livery.great Video And Info
Thanks a lot!
The meal with Qatar Airways was weird too from DOH to MIA, we left at 2am, and land in Miami at 4:30pm. The last meal they offered was also a "breakfast" lol
what is the brand of your handcarry luggage? I've been looking for one with a front opening
Level8 :)
Try Starlux or Cathay Aria next :)
I recently took a Turkish airlines flight at the back of the business cabin. They'd go back to refill welcome drink chioces and bread choices often, so I always have the full array of choices even though I was at the back of the cabin.
Sounds like you had a great flight!
@NonstopDan I did 😊
I kind of like the vintage look of chinese airlines. It's a good mix of not too vintage but not super sleak and modern either. It's just a nice in between.
Everything about service in China is impressive
No locked 787 windows - always a good reason to fly an airline 👍🏻
What a treat!
I’m going to Guangzhou too next week with China Southern airlines …@nd it’s my *FIRST* !!
FYI),I Loved❤️ your Shirt👕 !!!
❤😂
Enjoy!
love the video and shirt Dan, could you share where to buy😊
Thanks! The shirt is from Ted Baker and shrunk to a third of the size on its first wash so I don't recommend it😂
@NonstopDan ohh goodness. well, you brought it large enough. It fits perfectly now
Great video content of the airline that I've been flying since I was a kid. It's a pity that their a380s were retired under the strike of covid, but fortunately their 787-9s and a350s are in great position and definitely a huge upgrade of their fleet.
I nearly had a chance to fly their 757 but it was swapped to a 737 the day before departure😭.
one thing I really liked about china southern air economy was their tea. It was very good chinese tea, way better than i ever had with another airline
Great video!!!!
Thank you for this interesting video!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Welcome to my home Dan!!!!
Whenever I take long flight with my parents I get to enjoy business or first class with them because they would pay for my ticket. Chinese airlines have the best service for sure!
Impressive Flight Attendant!
Good childhood story about the Chinese model planes. The 757 was well acclaimed in the 90s. I used to run a fleet of toy TWA planes in first grade.
21:50 nice to see that you saw the last flying Air China 747-400
Both b2447 and b2472 are still in service
@robertwang1526 hmm.. can't find any recent flights for b2472 on FR24 though
I flew China Eastern a year prior to the pandemic.
I was on BC from BKK/PVG/LAX ( might be ORD )
It was impressive 😊
Never say no to NonstopDan notifications 🤣🤣 Love from Malaysia❤
Thanks so much!
Looking /awesome/, Dan! It's all coming togetherForest Row? Seriously? I grew up round there...wow. I also got thrown out of a pub, there, later.
Flew them a month ago. Despite getting to Guangzhou with plenty of time, we circled and circled and circled and eventually landed out in the arse end of the airport, next to what looked like a maintenance hanger. With about 45 minutes until our connecting flight and a 15 minute drive to the terminal we were given stickers and told to high tail it through the airport through immigration, "HURRY!"
They were pushing people in front of us, only to realise that the existing people in the security line were the same people who were being pushed through for the Bali flight.
"HURRY!"
We ran and ran and ran and made it to the OPPOSITE END of the airport with 5 minutes left and got onto the connecting flight.
