This guy is right, your phone isn't listening to, or watching you. I just asked my phone if it was, and it said "No, and I like that shirt you're wearing."
😂😂😂exactly
He kinda neglected to mention that phones absolutely have been listening and giving ads based on what you hear. They're just not doing it right now (hopefully).
It was a few years ago when people started reporting those freaky "coincidences". It was some kind of trial run so not everyone experienced it, and it only lasted for a few months.
If a company, or alphabet agency wants to listen to you, they will.
@@VikingTeddy Unfortunately this still happens just as much. I tried this out again a couple of weeks ago and just talking about subjects, that are not in my regular daily life and with my screen turned off still spawned a lot of targeted advertisement on that specific subject in the following week.
Lol
Wired is one of the best channels on RUclips. I dunno how they consistently find such good guests.
The guy who worked for Apple says your phone is totally not listening to you. Its just pure coincidence that it constantly brings up content unrelated to anything you've searched for but only mentioned in earshot of your phone 2 minutes ago.
brings up where
It is like asking a robber if he stole anything 🤣🤣.
With Google and Apple I've always that feel that they spy more than others...
Still the most important thing is to keep data safe: Meta for example is well known for losing users important data (1 years ago there were Usernames with their phone numbers all over Telegram... And still the governmnent was like "we didn't see anything. It all seems normal!". For God sake, don't they understand that they makes us vulnerables to cyberattacks?!?)...
Also the fact that it listens only to S is not completely correct. Google in fact lets you look into his data and it sometimes listens to a lot more... The same does Siri, so please, go to privacy and enable auto deleting data after 1 month. It is safer for you not having all your data on their server when you don't need that.
That’s google you doofus
Lol your "Hey Google" around 2:00 activated her on my phone
Bring David back! Long last phone tech that’s understandable and not patronising what an incredibly likeable person!
I'm sure you'd be among those that like Hitler if he believed in your gender dysphoria
Thanks so much, Laura! You made my day 💯🙏
@@PayetteForward you’re welcome! 😀
We appreciate content like this. It gives us a wider or deeper perspective on things.
Well said!!!
If you appreciate this, I also know a Nigerian Prince who would appreciate giving your money to.
Wo is „we“ and why don’t you know whether it is deeper or wider?
I appreciate this type of comment as it could be copied and pasted on every existing video and it would make sense
An important note I think most can agree on: it's not whether or not our phones are listening to us, but whether our information is being intercepted somewhere along the internet infrastructure ie wifi/cell networks.
Sounds like an interesting follow-up!
I loved this guy. He has a sense of catching the rhythm and tone of the process. Have a good mood. and this is one of the least videos I have barely watched until the endi.
I love how much of the data collection is hedged in "your phones hardware and OS arent doing this" without ever really acknowledging that the various apps you download are *absolutely* doing it.
Besides, all of us have gotten personalized ads about a specific thing right after having a conversation with someone about that specific thing. It's not even a secret, how come he didn't even acknowledge that?
Also, it's lame how apple centric this whole video is
He did say that and gave an example with tiktok app.
@@David-ki2xtit’s like a very long apple ad😂
Airplane mode is great for preserving battery life! I had a phone without a SIM card for years so I would always have it on airplane mode and only switch on WiFi when I needed it
Sure is! I prefer to focus on the set-it-and-forget-it fixes. Then again, your phone probably lasted a really, really, really long time. 😂
I don't like apple products but this video was great
I watch too much true crime. My mind goes first thing to "but they won't be able to find my body if they can't track my phone!" 😂
The video was much more interesting then I expected for such a common topic as phones
Thanks, Dima!
It is mentioned that leaving apps on in the background is okay in terms of not really effecting battery life that much. But how about effecting RAM? Would leaving apps open in the background eventually make the phone less responsive as those apps might be eating up RAM?
That's the reason I always close off all apps; because I don't want the phone to feel slower or sluggish. Is this correct?
Do you even watch the video? He said background app wouldn't eat up RAM.
@@AndrewNiccolThough that's not at all true. How do you know where you left off if it's not stored anywhere? And I doubt it'd move everything every time you tab out of an app.
No because there's something called garbage collection, if memory (RAM) usage starts approaching capacity your phone's operating system will free up space by terminating or suspending other applications.
@@snowgw2 And where is the garbage collection?
@@hopcfizl3671 i dont think you can find it physically lol. Its in the software on the phone so unless your a tech nerd you cant really see it in action
I liked how he trolled me by saying "Hey Siri" which made all of my devices activate.
Just remember that every single tech company wants to store and if it can sell your data.
I love dark mode. I have it on all the time, so much easier on the eyes.
This is gold! Please make it into series and cover PC too.
Me, at whoevers hacking me on public wifi: Hope you enjoy the Warrior Cats fanfiction
Very informative. Thank you.
Love these wire interviews sessions
If my phone can’t track me how did I get an ad for a very specific coffee I was looking at in the morning at the store? Haven’t googled it, haven’t said out loud, literally just grabbed it to look at it and put it away. I had my phone in my hand.
Has happened to me too.
Husband and I have had this same thing happen to us repeatedly. Nothing said verbally. Nothing typed. Phone in hand or in pocket but screen locked. Suddenly we get ads for their very product.
One time in particular, I was working in my kitchen and my phone was in the next room. I grumbled something to myself and the next time I picked up my phone I had ads all over for a product that was essentially a solution to my grumblings. 🤔
For this thing specifically, I read an article that says your ads will sometimes be based on searches done by people who are in your surroundings. So someone else also stood in that aisle, decided to Google the coffee, now you get ads.
Apparently this is done because there’s an assumption that people share interests with those in their immediate surroundings.
It makes sense to me since my brother bought a power washer while he was visiting us once. We didn’t talk about it at all until I mentioned I kept getting weird power washer ads and didn’t know why. That’s when he mentioned he bought one off Amazon while sitting in our living room.
@@HyperWolf Yes, this. The proximity of your phone to other phones can say a lot about the relationship between the owners of the phones. If there are several phones that spend a lot of time at one address, especially at night, chances are they're a family or at least are close. If someone there does a lot of searching about something, others in the vicinity can be fed ads about it because chances are they're going to like the same or similar thing.
they track your Location even if Your Location Seevice is turned off
Very useful. Thanks for sharing.
Such an informative video, make more of these.
I love this channel, so informative
OMG I never see anyone wearing Penguing (the brand). Love it 😍
"Former Apple Store tech" uh-huh.
Great informative presentation. A pleasure to watch! 👍
My phone is listening to me by choice. Google Pixel 2 with "Always Listening" song feature on. As well as "hey Google"
Very interesting !!!!
Thankssssss !!!!
This guy has helped me learn so much about my phone. I really enjoy his content.
Thanks so much, Janet! I really enjoyed your comment. 👍🏆
i love this channel, we all need to watch this kind of videos
Thanks so much! WIRED has an amazing team behind the scenes that makes this possible.
Couple comments on topics I've had experience with:
I fly private planes, and my phone gets confused as all get out and the battery plummets very quickly if I don't put it on airplane mode before going up in the air. Meanwhile, the plane could care less. Commercial planes obviously may vary, but I recon you're much better off just using the in-flight wi-fi.
Planned obsolescence is absolutely a real thing. I went to college for engineering and planned obsolescence was something they taught all engineers in all disciplines the very first semester. They called it something nicer to try to convince everyone it was a good idea, but it was very obvious what it was.
I totally love this. Very educative 👍👍
This was a great video!
Finally a tech informative video on this channel
Very informative, love this
Thanks so much :)
Super interesting, thanks!
very interesting!
My ex-wife and a friend were joking about adult diapers one day. Her phone was on the table between them. Shortly thereafter ads for adult diapers started appearing in her feeds. The phone was definitely listening
Love the sign-pusher
This was great!
dude's roasting samsung there
is it a roast if it's true
This is like having a tobacco rep saying that smoking is healthy
Appreciate your vote of confidence.... 🚬😮💨✌️
You get doctors and nurses that smoke giving you information on how to stop smoking 😂
ive personally had a hotel card get ruined by an iphone, but its been years. i think it was around the 5s era... but because of that day, ive always kept them separate.
Never, ever connect to unsecured public Wi-Fi unless you absolutely have to, and definitely never log into anything sensitive like a bank account or other personally identifying account/application. It takes no effort at all for someone with a laptop to set their Network Interface Card (NIC) to "promiscuous mode" along with using some software like a packet tracer and they'll be able to view all the information moving across that network, and tell whether it's encrypted or not. Another tip is to make sure your NFC is turned off except for the moment when you're using it (tap-to-pay feature on your phone), as someone can easily walk by you and make a transaction without you knowing. Stay safe out there!
Right so if you log in using fingerprint threy'll use it for what? And of course banks don't use unsecured protocols.
If in 2023 your bank, or any other app that handles PII, doesn't use HTTPS or equivalent they need their software stack examined, and you need your head examined for using them.
Ah Payette Forward they are a great channel!
Thanks, Jessica! Think of how much of a thrill it was for us to be approached by WIRED!
He's a former apple employee this video is a psyop abort. Also as someone who has worked in network communications for airports, turn on airplane mode, as sometimes cell towers act a backup or primary connection for the ground radios that communicate with aircraft to get your flight clearance faster meaning your plane leaves on time.
What's psyop abort?
You are a former airport communications technician, your post is a psyop abort !!1!
Awesome keep using this guy. I love his other channel.
Yes, they hear and see you.
When's part two of this?
1:18 - I suspected something like this. When working and I encounter something surprisingly or frustrating, I commonly exclaim out loud to myself, “Are you serious!?” And find that this commonly inadvertently activates Siri.
I suddenly have a craving for apples after watching a totally not apple-related commercial I mean video.
Wow, this was pretty interesting
Am I the only one who recoiled at 0:42 ? 🤣😂🤣
Not me hissing at my phone trying to make Siri pop up
Is mmWave 5G signal on iPhone can cover by hand or case? I saw some article says it will weaken really fast.
i always figured the air plane mode was a thing mostly pre 2010 simply cause that if theory a plane full assuming 1 phone for every seat COULD cause a minor issue but when it comes to fly its best to lean on caution ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
can my phone cure my testicular cancer? 😅😂
I’m still using an iPhone 6s Plus. Had it almost ten years, pretty crazy. But I have gotten the charging port and battery replaced! Wouldn’t be useable if I hadn’t.
very interesting and i want that shirt
If my phone is not listening, how come I see ads about things I was talking about that I didn't search for? Happens all the time.
Literally exactly what I thought. So it won't listen to anything you say until you prompt it with "Hey Siri..." I have absolutely been advertised to with things I talked about with my friends in conversation and we never uttered those two words...
@@carmensmithaguirre3049 yes. This video is BS
Check your app permissions. I recently found out a bunch of my apps were accessing my microphone.
@@carmensmithaguirre3049 for this, maybe your friend googled it right after leaving. I read something that says that your recommended ads are sometimes based on searches made by people in your surrounding areas. So if your friend’s phone was near your phone, you now get ads for his/her interests since it’s likely you share some.
@@HyperWolf Huh. Never heard that one.
My Pixel 7 is actually listening because it identifies a song without me pressing any button. You can disable it of course.
Apple watch question, what about water with chlorine or water with epsom salt? Are these an issue for the interior coatings. Or does it depend on the model?
All Factz
This guy is great!
I’m calling BS on it not listening to me. Too many times has a very specific word been “said only” and then a day later both Facebook and Amazon are giving me ads of that very thing. Way too often to be just a coincidence. Unless you have a better explanation of why that’s constantly happening
:55 that makes sense, isn’t that how they track gunshots?
When he said hey Siri my Siri popped up
The technical stuff is believable but the truth is phones are listening more than just command to wake up. It has been proven many times. Even I talking about some specific topic near my phone, got few days later many (spam) emails about that specific subject. That is no coincidence.
yep. i was talking about a very esoteric thing (the babinsky reflex) and got a tiktok about it a few hours later (and i don't watch that kind of content on tiktok). it's no coincidence.
Even when plugging iPhones or Android into USB cables, just because you don't see a popup doesn't mean they aren't doing something funky! It may be emulating a keyboard for a delayed attack, or even pretend to be a high speed ethernet connection, which means they can spy on all your phone's internet traffic.
How this video doesn't have millions of views??!!!
Excellent video. With regard to extending the battery life of your phone, it is still advisable to keep between 20-80% where possible. This exponentially increases the lifespan of the battery. Leaving at 0% or 100% for extended periods of time has the opposite effect, even allowing for the buffer that is hidden in phones and EVs 😎
Afak the 0-100% charge state your phone shows is actually 20-80% of your battery. For lithium batteries at least.
and that's folks why i don't own a smart phone. i only own a cell phone for emergencies, no need for anything more than that. i don't take selfies where ever i go and i don't feel the need to take pictures of my food. since i don't do social media i also don't need to check my phone constantly to see if anyone liked my posts. who needs apps??? it's a very freeing and peaceful life, you should try it sometimes :-).
does turning airplane mode on, then restarting, actually reset the apps? I have an Android made by T-mobile..
The real question I have is "Do charging pads destroy your battery?"
Why would they? They charge using the same method as a cable. The same way you wouldn't keep your phone always plugged in, you don't want to keep it always on a charging pad.
@@literallyjeff Because they generate excess heat + they are usually designed to charge at max C, both of which are not good for the battery in the long run. That being said, by the time the cumulative effect of wireless charging actually starts making a difference you'll be looking into upgrading your device anyway. Wireless chargers are worse in a different manner-they are horribly energy inefficient.
@@zwerko as far as my understanding goes, the excess heat is negligible unless you have a cheap poorly made coil, there's no way the heat will damage the battery. They are not really that inefficient relatively speaking, probably only 20% wattage loss. But inefficiency would also not contribute to battery degredation, only longer charge times and electricity usage. These are not significant factors. So as per the original question, they do not destroy your battery.
@@literallyjeff 😅 20% is huge, relatively. Thats like earning 32k instead of 40k. Do you mean absolutely?
@@stormveil That's a very poor comparison. Phone chargers are already extremely efficient. Like pennies per month of electricity costs. So 20% more is negligible. They are, relative to normal electricity usage of a charger, still very very efficient.
airplane mode may not be mandatory anymore in the EU, but wouldn't you drain your battery more because your phone could have some difficulties connecting to all the networks in a plane?
This has already been said but how are we supposed to take any of this as fact if he blatantly lies answering the first question?
He's not lying, that's how "Hey Siri" works...
Didn't get to see what happened to those iPhones after they stayed in those different liquids 😭😭
Highly doubt the amount of time me and a friend were talking about a specific video and later that day or the day after it was in my recommended after 6 years of not watching it and personalized RUclips not in that category. And then I am not even touching upon talking about needing specific things and it being recommended as a product advertisement even if its very abstract and something you haven't searched for.
The magsafe is a prototype- it got so hot it left brown burnt marks on the back of my case when i asked the guy about he said it happens sometimes
“The battery would drain very quickly” anyone have an iPhone with a battery that last very long?
17? I thought we were at 13 or something lol
Liked that one.
"Former Apple Store tech and Smartphone Expert"...
Wait, he said Apple... Store Tech... Expert...
The same "Experts" at an "Apple Store", that lie to you that your iPhone can not be rapaired, or the repair would cost $2000, so you should buy a new one, and then you bring it to Louis Rossmann, and he repairs it for like $15... Well I definately would not believe a single word he says...
Just like with a lot of people these days, hence all of these "upgrades" they do with phones, websites, programming etc.
0:26 That would explain the junk iPhone battery.
I still have problems with my right hand interfering with reception and with internet. I will gladly show you it happens.
Nice try FBI I'm onto your tactics.
the most important question, does youtube connect to wifi.
Wired is one of the best channels kn RUclips!
Man it's going to be great when they finally just admit that our phones have totally been listening to us this entire time. The lie is just falling apart. Yeah okay, it's just listening for "one specific acoustic model" but also has the capability of instantaneously translating speech to text, interesting. "It doesn't do it unless you ask it to!" lol
Tf ur phone automatically does speech to text without ur permission?
@@gjl4101 Lol as if they actually care if permission is given
It may only be able to recognize “hey siri,” but the more advanced AI that your recorded conversations get sent to back at Apple HQ can recognize 1000s of languages and dialects.
The only iPhone tech person that doesn’t tell me to turn it off and on.
