Webp files are an actual pain to deal with. I edit with lots of things from video games, and the renders that are the highest quality and show up first are webp files, they're usually from wikis, and I need those images without having to remove the background for every single one! It saves so much time!
So although your technique works, it does not help out my situation, cuz every time I drop it into Premiere Pro, it says the file is not compatible, this is what sucks about webp files.
I'm letting you know what's my grind with those files, I desperately wish they could fix this... The video was enjoyable though, wishing you the best!

What about using this trick, then opening it in something like GiMP or Inkscape and saving it again, with a new name as a PNG? Would that maybe correct whatever issue Premier Pro is having?

I can confirm that this method works, but to then edit the image in GIMP or PS you need to first open it in "Photos" (Windows) and save a copy on your drive. You can then open and edit the copy as you like in GIMP or PS.

If this doesnt work for you theres a chrome extension called "save image as type" that auto converts the file. If you're on mac converting the image is native just right click the file and choose "convert image"

I have a problem, even if I convert files to jpeg or png davinci resolve still is not supporting them, and when I try to link them manually, they re nowhere to be found, I hit the dead-end

Didn't work at all. Just said "png" when you said it should say ".webp" and when I saved to all files it turned back to a webp

I've tried the "all files" then change extension to jpg. It will then save but the file it won't be readable by windows. As an image.

this only works for still images not gifs can someone pleas tell me how to save these files as gif files and have them work on my image viewer in slideshow or tell me where i can find an image viewer that plays webp files as gifs without opening a web page.

It should work the same way but try .gif as that is the file extension.

You fail to see the real problem. If I take a Purple Heart immage from the fandom wiki page which is a png on the wiki but I can only find a webp download and simply rename it png, when oppened with photoshop it will say "not a png" and not work. And if I copy it to ms paint and then save it as a png the transparent background is made black.
Eddit: For anyone interested heres the convoluted way I found over an hour of thinking about this and trying various things:
0) copy the image you want
1) open an image in the format you want with Paint
2) reduce its size to a few pixels
3) paste in the image you want
4) make everything white
5) save as a size template you could also use in the future able to ignore the 1-4 steps
6) open template with Krita
7) paste in the image you want
8) hide the background
9) export the image you want in the format you want
Yes now photoshop recognises the image as a true png.

Doing this method still doesn't allow you to import in da vinci/premier pro. The only way I get around this is by opening the image in a new tab and then using the snipping tool. That way I can save it as a jpg/png and all works without issue. It's annoying to do but is the best way I found so far.

WARNING - this method DOES NOT WORK. This method only changes the file extension name. The file remains a .webp file. It does not become a .png or a .jpg file.

I hate webp, for two reasons.
I can't share the image with Facebook. Which proves it is NOT the most popular file format/extension.
I still use ThumbsPlus. Which in my version of ThumbsPlus, it has no codec or database, for detecting or showing .webp files.

This doesnt work for more, precise? programs. Photoshop somehow still knows. You will need to download the image like he did, and then open it in photos, and the Save As Png, and then Adobe will let you use it. Very anoying

Another fix is to right click copy image, than open up Paint, than paste image into Paint, and than finally save as jpeg or png

How do you make the files automatically save as a png without having to click anything extra, there is a video you youtube that shows you how to edit something in the registry so its automatically downloaded as a png but i cannot find it

I wondered if you'd help me. I don't know what setting I hit, but I like viewing in Office, but doesn't matter why and was trying to work with a webp photo. My issue is now every .webp photo I try to open (either double click or open), it opens the entire file of photos it's in, yet only .png photos (not jpg) and that .webp image I click on is not one of them. When I used to click on webp photos to convert them, that didn't happen, only the one I clicked on opened, now it opens a whole file. Do you know how to undo whatever I did? Great video, that makes things easier, thanks!
