Love this challenge! For me, I plan to protective style for next 2 years because I'm getting too many single strand knots with my hair out, even in twists/plaits. So, I'm changing it up, want to be waist length by my 25th bday, wish me luck!
This is how you know different strokes for different folks, every single step in this challenge would literally snap my waist length hair off to the root 😂😩😩 but I’m curious to see her results cuz I be bored
It’s surprising how deep conditioning is one of the most recommended routines, yet indigenous strandz does not seem bothered about it and the girl has hair to give away. What are your thoughts on deep conditioning?
If you moisturize and seal daily apparently it isn't necessary. I learned that overtime. I still do DC. But there are women with long hair who water and moisturize daily who rarely experience dry hair and so don't feel the need.
I DC once a week. I don’t do daily moisturising, maybe every 2 days. I believe I am retaining length but because of health issues, my growth has definitely diminished. It takes me a long time to grow an inch of hair. Still pushing through.
Deep and leave-in conditioning seems so unnecessary to me. I stopped doing it and didn't notice a difference in my hair. What is the point of using a moisturizer that you'll wash out anyways? I still use some deep conditioners, but I don't wash it out. I basically use it as a moisturizer/hair lotion.

Hey sis, I may be wrong but my understanding is that black Castor oil (Jamaican, Haitian) is a result of how it is processed. The black colour is the ash from the roasted Castor bean. The ash itself makes the ph level of Black Castor oils higher and more alkaline - clear Castor oil tends to be more acidic. Personally I use both depending on what I feel is best for my hair ph wise at the time (needing more acidic base to reduce frizz for example I'll use the clear/pure one). I have the original Tropic Isle Living Jamaican Black Castor Oil which says it's 100% natural and the only ingredient listed is Black Castor oil - my biggest thing is the smell of my JBCO can be a bit much😩 Hope that helps 😊
I agree. I think in black castor oil, the seeds are boiled or roasted before the oil is extracted leaving ash in the oil and making the oil black. If not for the smell i would only use this because where i live its cheaper. But regular castor oil(white one) if i remember is cold pressed and then refined.

Aloe Vera castor oil coconut water all those stuff you’ve mentioned are good stuff for the hair. But my question sis, where did you get the one drop of dish soap idea from? Was that Indigenous strands too?
Actually no. I took the idea from a chemistry class I took when I was in high school. My teacher taught us the way soap cuts through grease and oil. I tried putting a drop of dish soap in some water with essential oils and shook it. Sure enough, the oils will begin to mix since the soap breaks up the bonds of the water. It settles still so you have to shake it each time, but it works!
I admittedly haven't been swimming in years so I haven't had a routine for when I swim during this new hair routine. But I'll make a video to show if that comes up this year!
I always try to buy pure oils. I have a JBCO that's just has that one ingredient. I'm not home and unfortunately I don't remember the name or I'd list it here. It can be hard we just have to look around or let each other know.
I was just looking to follow her challenge for a month, but i didn't know which products to use, and then this appears in my reccomended, seeing this is really helpful. I know this is late, but if you do respond i was wondering should i clarify my hair before trying this challenge? And i know she doesnt use deep conditioner, but does that mean i also cannot use deep conditioner? Thanks!
Lol it's never too late to start fresh! I would say that clarifying is totally up to you. I didn't, but if you want to reset and start fresh I say go for it! I don't use DC because the castor oil has such a high amount of fatty acids that my hair doesn't need it. You do what works best for YOU. I don't have your hair nor does any other person on this platform, so take everything we say with a grain of salt. For more ideas and support, check out the link to my Discord server where other subscribers and viewers are talking about the methods and routines they're doing! It's so good to have you here!
At first I might have sprayed my hair if I felt it needed it. But over time I realized my hair was perfectly fine. I don’t reapply anything and have no need to as long as my hair is tucked away; especially in a scarf. Hope this helps!
I never have so I'm not sure how well it would work. The reason I use the flaxseed gel is so that my ends harden when the gel dries. If aloe vera gel can do the same, I don't see why not! Let me know how it works for you!
@@SimplyJuliaLauren I have tried flaxseed gel instead of aloe vera. It worked for me. However the consistency of the gel is important; for me , it had to be very liquidy rather than thick but its a great detangler .
@@lorrainelashley3723 How interesting; I've always hated when it's too thin because then it doesn't hold in my hair. But I've also never used it to detangle.
Castor oil is so thick and heavy that all three times I used it I could not get that stuff off of my hair. I got medium strands with some fine ones thrown in, 4c, super tight pen spring type hair. I literally cried trying to wash that castor oil out of my head. Way to thick for my low porosity hair to breathe at all. How do ya'll do it???
My hair is very thick and coarse, and it's 4c-4b. The first time I ever used castor oil I used way too much. I knew it would be thick, but I didn't understand the ratio for my hair. It's something you have to be patient and work with with your own hair if you choose to go that route. Nobody knows your hair quite like you, so make sure that you do what's best for you
I've honestly never timed it; especially because I take lots of breaks and am usually watching shows while I do my hair. I give myself a block of 3 hours though lol
Do you mean that the gel flakes off your hair? This can happen sometimes. I've found that making sure the gel isn't too thick as well as not putting too much on at a time can help with that. It is still gel, so there may be a little flaking, but these things have helped me a lot!
I'm sorry I'm just now seeing this! I don't know much about Extreme gel and have never used it. As far as the gel hardens I think it would work great. Let me know how it works for you!
Question. So I have this mix that I made and use as my shampoo. I want to know if it’s safe(because that is what I prefer to use). It is betonite clay mixed with amla powder in African black soap, castor oil and some drops of peppermint oil. It feels soooo good on my scalp AND hair. Is it okay to use regularly?👀
That sounds like an interesting mixture! Is it liquid or do you use it as a clay mask on your hair and scalp? The only potentially dangerous thing I can think of is if you use too much essential oils. They’re very concentrated, so be sure you’re using the right amount🤗✨
@@SimplyJuliaLauren oh no I use just a few drops of the essential oil. The mixture is a liquid form. I dissolved the African black soap in hot water before adding in the other stuff.
Nope! Ever since switching to castor oil, I have no need to deep condition anymore. Castor oil is rich in fatty acids and extremely thick. A little goes a long way, but it works as a deep conditioning treatment as well as a leave in.
@@BetweenMeorYou girl I totally feel you!! If you’d like, you can also join the discord link in the pinned comment to share your journey as you go with others! We’ve got about 60 other naturals there all sharing pics and regimines!
@@BetweenMeorYou I will usually only use aloe Vera juice during wash days. In the summer I may give an extra few squirts Avery couple of days if it’s needed
Thanks to the castor oil and it's thickness and richness in fatty acids, I was able to use deep conditioner less and less until one day I just didnt need it at all. If your hair needs it, please use it. Tailor this to what your hair needs!
Instead of castor oil, just use vitamin e oil. Castor oil has A LOT of vitamin E oil. It's one of the reasons why it's so beneficial to your hair. It even has the same texture. It's not the exact same as caster oil, but it's pretty close AND you'll know what you're putting in your hair.
Thank you for the tip! I do love vitamin E oil, and even though it's thick, I find it still isn't as thick as castor oil. Perhaps I'll give it a go anyway!
3:27 No brand names were stated here about castor oil. May I ask what you mean? Edit: if you mean that it's the brand names that are doing it, I totally agree and it's so difficult to find castor oil that doesn't cheat the system
@@SimplyJuliaLaurenThat’s what I meant! Unless you have a West Indian market where you can purchase directly from the source. Luckily, I vend myself so I don’t have to look for it

Lol if it makes you feel better, my hair was just above bra strap length the first time I did this challenge. I’m just doing it again and showing others so we can keep going and keep each other accountable!🤗
You can do as you please with your hair. For someone with hair as coily and long as mine, it is much easier to keep it in a protective style as much as possible. The more I wear it out the more tangled it becomes. If I wore my hair like other Naturals I would be detangling my hair daily. I don’t do this because I can’t wear it out. I’m grown; I’ll do as I please. But because I love my crown of glory, I decide to take care of it in the best way I can. Thanks for watching!

I don't use DC because the castor oil has such a high amount of fatty acids that my hair doesn't need it. You do what works best for YOU. I don't have your hair nor does any other person on this platform, so take everything we say with a grain of salt.

What to do during the week or in the challenge we dont touch our hair at all between wash days?
@ebmckenzie and you apply oil and flaxeed gel again or not ? Or you only spray the aloe juice and that’s it
At first I might have sprayed my hair if I felt it needed it. But over time I realized my hair was perfectly fine. I don’t reapply anything and have no need to as long as my hair is tucked away; especially in a scarf. Hope this helps!
Hii, amazing tips. One question, can I substitute flaxseed gel for aloe Vera gel?
Nobody knows your hair quite like you, so make sure that you do what's best for you
How long does it take to re plait your hair? I do 6 plaits and it takes 40 minutes! Ugh 😑
I've honestly never timed it; especially because I take lots of breaks and am usually watching shows while I do my hair. I give myself a block of 3 hours though lol
Gurl 😅 not the cat helping you out. I'm done
He’s my little helper 😂
My flaxseed flakes. What could I be doing wrong
Do you mean that the gel flakes off your hair? This can happen sometimes. I've found that making sure the gel isn't too thick as well as not putting too much on at a time can help with that.
It is still gel, so there may be a little flaking, but these things have helped me a lot!
beautiful hair
Thank you so much!
Hey Julia girl!!!🙋🏾♀️💕
Heyyy!🙋🏾♀️✨
I love your videos girl
Aww thank you so much !!!🥰☺️✨
And how do you feel about extreme gel
@@kayann8004 i think it should be fine then ! 🙌🏾✨🤗
@@SimplyJuliaLauren thank you!
Great info! But quick question: you don't massage your scalp with any oil and how long is the challenge?
I no longer use oil on my scalp. And the challenge is the whole year!
I would like to join this oooo
Well please do!
Woaw I really like your regimen.
Please dont you deep condition or something?
Nope! Ever since switching to castor oil, I have no need to deep condition anymore. Castor oil is rich in fatty acids and extremely thick. A little goes a long way, but it works as a deep conditioning treatment as well as a leave in.
@@SimplyJuliaLauren this exactly what I need. Less products, less money, more hair
thank you soo much.
Please how often do u spray your hair with water whiles in twist
@@BetweenMeorYou girl I totally feel you!! If you’d like, you can also join the discord link in the pinned comment to share your journey as you go with others! We’ve got about 60 other naturals there all sharing pics and regimines!
@@BetweenMeorYou I will usually only use aloe Vera juice during wash days. In the summer I may give an extra few squirts Avery couple of days if it’s needed
mango & lime .. i know tropic isle is straight from yaad
Thank you!!!
Hi, what about deep conditioning my hair?
Thanks to the castor oil and it's thickness and richness in fatty acids, I was able to use deep conditioner less and less until one day I just didnt need it at all. If your hair needs it, please use it. Tailor this to what your hair needs!
@@SimplyJuliaLauren thanks
I also use oils only to deep condition
Instead of castor oil, just use vitamin e oil. Castor oil has A LOT of vitamin E oil. It's one of the reasons why it's so beneficial to your hair. It even has the same texture. It's not the exact same as caster oil, but it's pretty close AND you'll know what you're putting in your hair.
Thank you for the tip! I do love vitamin E oil, and even though it's thick, I find it still isn't as thick as castor oil. Perhaps I'll give it a go anyway!
Those brand names are the ones cutting the castor oil 😅
3:27 No brand names were stated here about castor oil. May I ask what you mean?
Edit: if you mean that it's the brand names that are doing it, I totally agree and it's so difficult to find castor oil that doesn't cheat the system
@@SimplyJuliaLaurenThat’s what I meant! Unless you have a West Indian market where you can purchase directly from the source. Luckily, I vend myself so I don’t have to look for it
When we starting
Now!
I am going to try some of the suggestions but with a twist. U won't be leaving my hair once a month. It will be once a week.

Camille Rose doesnt give any hold
It's more about sealing than it is about hold. For some, like myself, it has great hold when used properly
Y’all starting with all this hair 😭😭
Lol if it makes you feel better, my hair was just above bra strap length the first time I did this challenge. I’m just doing it again and showing others so we can keep going and keep each other accountable!🤗
You lost me at Eco Styler gel.
That was the last gel I listed. You can use the other ones.
So what’s the point in having natural hair if you can’t even wear it out? May as well chop it short....
I want IN!!!!
Then come on! I’ve created a discord server that’s in my pinned comment🤗
