@Ray I'll do my best to explain, [become happy] is a process of transformation from being sad to being happy. [be happy] means that you are happy right now, at this exact moment in time. So basically you have accept the present moment and situation and [be] happy right now, and meditation helps with that. Of course if you have many problems in life, like no job, poor health, etc. it's gonna be much more difficult to [be] happy and you must try to change things that are possible to be changed.
@@rafaelcordoba13 if you are trying to change things before being happy you are doing the exact opposite of what this means. Have to "be" happy in the present moment. Not when you change things.

Amazing conversation. I’m enjoying so much Sam’s app. Meditation has changed my life. 🙏
I've learned at a fairly young age that my anxiety comes from a feeling of a loss or lack of control. And living by this saying that "you can only control yourself, your actions, your work ethic, & your attitude" has helped me find peace with my anxieties 😌
I've been a huge fan of Sam and his books and debates for about 2 years now, and have been using his Waking Up app for over a year now. Can't express how excited I was to see 2 of my favorite influencers collaborate!
I’ve got serious pandemic fatigue. Really having a hard time lately....struggling mentally and it’s conversations like this that really do help me re frame my mode of thought. Thank you Matt and Sam
He articulates in such interesting ways too. He reads, writes, and converses about intellectual topics all the time which no doubt facilitates his ability to communicate; yet others do the same but don’t possess his skill.
Sam Harris changed my life. I don't think a single person has really been able to hand me a solution to crippling anxiety and self-sabotage and depression- but when Sam finally explained what meditation is in his Pangburn lecture- not simply some activity to "stress relief" or anything like that, but deeper and life changing in every aspect. You no longer identify with the thoughts in your head. You see reality for what it is. Sam harris saved my life.
Wow same here, I was in a dark place a few years ago after a bad breakup, I was at my wits end and came across the Waking Up app. Changed my life forever. I give Sam credit for saving my life as well.

At age 43 , I started meditating for the first time ever in my life last year , I can’t even begin to tell you the difference it has made and how much it has improved my quality of life .. I do it every morning now at 5 . 30 , first thing in the morning after I brush my teeth , I sit down on my sofa , turn on my meditation music on Spotify and mediate for an hour .. What a great way to actually get a head-start on your day ..!
Desperately needed to hear this. I’m tired of feeling numb and I think it’s due to my inability to concentrate which has drastically escalated over the last few months.
meditating is really nice to help me focus. I've gotten lots of use out of it. on days I cannot concentrate at all while meditating i love the guided meditations. thought i'd share if you needed some advice on that too :)
Man I can't like this video enough! Sam is such an insightful thinker. Being in the moment and fully feeling whatever one is feeling, focusing on whatever it is one is focusing on, is really one of the powerful keys to find and connect with happiness.
Moments of stillness are so important in a world of constant information. For nothing more than to just hear our own inner voice in a world where we are are constantly being bombarded with "other".
0:24 Oh wow! I watched that documentary about minimalism on Netflix years ago. And it changed so much of my life. Never knew it was directed by Matt. :O

YESS MATT!! Meditation, as well as other techniques to tap into your subconscious mind can really help you rewrite the stories you’ve been telling yourself and finally start thriving, apart from all the physical benefits of decreased stress and anxiety🌱
I love this. At first meditation Was a practice. Something I had to bring into my life. After years as you become consciously aware of yourself, your thoughts , your emotions, its also like a switch. As soon as I feel that mental struggle , I am able to calm that anxiety by doing breath work. At anytime. Im no longer consumed by my "low vibrational self" . Its pretty amazing to be able to point out an emotion or thought at any given time. Toxic thoughts will arise. And when you notice them its so soothing to be able to make them go away before they get a hold of you. Just by breathing life into your body. Its such a relieve all around.
i love this. and i think it is so so true. it is such a sign of growth that you could see your own "low vibrational self" it is so fantastic. a lot of spiritual maturity. I hope to get to that level soon! thank you for sharing :)

I can't lie, I put this video on and went to keep doing my work while "listening". I'm in fact not listening to anything but Sam's voice is just the perfect "background noise" to work, not to be funny or rude, it's just so smooth and calming... Thanks for this video Matt!
The timing for uploading this content is just right! Thank you for making it! Lately I’ve been feeling so flatten out and numbed down by the excessive exposure of social media use and working behind screens all day from home instead of attending physical education. My mind feels extremely cluttered and exhausted the whole time... I’ve just downloaded the app, it was the right push to get back into meditation although it has been lingering in the back of my mind, well done!
Because of meditation, I'm better able to put more joy and attention into my other hobbies, like playing the piano. Thinking about it this way gives the act of meditation more purpose, and I like to incorporate meditation before I go to bed sometimes. I think a lot of what Sam is saying is spot on. Our attention is what's most important in the end, and the less we give importance to that, the more we'll be living in that state of "autopilot", or just going through the motions without much deeper thought. Thank you for sharing this interview, Matt! ❤
@@smallcatbigmeow i’ve gotten an increase in energy, decrease in stress and anxiety levels which were previously very high. Also just feeling happier in general and feeling healthier both mentally and physically
Sam’s app has slowly become my favourite source for guided meditations. I highly recommend trying the love and kindness meditations, they truly changed my life.
When I started meditation, it felt like finally being allowed to drive the vehicle of my mind rather than being a passenger in the backseat, forced to go wherever the vehicle took me. Sam Harris' instruction helped make that possible.
One of the most helpful and thought provoking videos you’ve put out in a while. I’m really grateful for you filming this. Having been working on meditation, being more focused on the present and less distracted, this really cemented certain ideas I hadn’t yet grasped. I will definitely be saving this one and returning to it as needed!
The moment he talked about tech companies and how they are trying to catch our attention, reminded me of the social dilemma on Netflix. I highly recommend it to anyone who feels distracted by social media. It helped me, to view social media from distance and more as a tool if that makes any sense. Really like the video and how he explains everything. It’s calming and thoughtful in itself. Stay safe and healthy everyone
With that philosophy in mind it is so obvious that social media actually spoils every moment rather than enhances it. Something I’ve believed for a long time but understand why now. And no regrets about largely giving up social media years ago.
This was the nudge I needed to get back into meditation.

Only 7? What a laser focus.
Fantastic content. Thanks Matt, and thanks so much to Sam for joining you for this as well. Appreciate both of your time.
I love the moment during meditation when you start levitating . . .
👀
Like those Hindu, Buddhist monks in Himalayas?
Matt, thank you for this type of videos, especially at the time we are experiencing right now.
You are helping me a lot.
Meditation is the art of doing nothing, because everything is already happening by itself. One can't be more minimalist than that.
I can't lie, I put this video on and went to keep doing my work while "listening". I'm in fact not listening to anything but Sam's voice is just the perfect "background noise" to work, not to be funny or rude, it's just so smooth and calming... Thanks for this video Matt!
Wtf I bought waking up yesterday and today I get this. What a treat
I'm using Sam's Waking Up app. It's really an amazing app for meditation. I highly recommend it.
THANK YOU MATT! Love the quote "happiness can only be found in the current moment". You are such a HUGE inspiration for our channel!
I would definitely recommend Sam's book 'waking up', it's a great read
Was just using the Waking Up app before coming on RUclips. This interview is gold.
Meditation has cured me from high blood pressure, anxiety, & panic attacks🙏
meditation has helped me cure my anxiety and stress levels as well!! it's so great :)
Wim Hof breathing and freezing showers have been a game changer (although the bathroom screams are disconcerting haha)
What benefits have you noticed?
@@smallcatbigmeow i’ve gotten an increase in energy, decrease in stress and anxiety levels which were previously very high. Also just feeling happier in general and feeling healthier both mentally and physically
Sam’s app has slowly become my favourite source for guided meditations. I highly recommend trying the love and kindness meditations, they truly changed my life.
When I started meditation, it felt like finally being allowed to drive the vehicle of my mind rather than being a passenger in the backseat, forced to go wherever the vehicle took me. Sam Harris' instruction helped make that possible.
I'm so happy meditation is gaining popularity! The ability to observe yourself without getting involved is invaluable. Thanks Matt!!

Love your videos. Thanks for the interesting knowledge...getting back to meditation.
A 30 min video? The more Matt time the better!
This changed my view of meditation and now I am actually interested. Great content and great video.
I feel bad for the people not having this masterpiece in their recommendations
One of the most helpful and thought provoking videos you’ve put out in a while. I’m really grateful for you filming this. Having been working on meditation, being more focused on the present and less distracted, this really cemented certain ideas I hadn’t yet grasped. I will definitely be saving this one and returning to it as needed!
Sam should at one point give us some book recommendations, that would be interesting
"If you are right, you can afford to keep your patience. If you are wrong, you can't afford to lose it."
With that philosophy in mind it is so obvious that social media actually spoils every moment rather than enhances it. Something I’ve believed for a long time but understand why now. And no regrets about largely giving up social media years ago.
