Now for the 3rd year I've taken myself completely out of the field and off the brush. On track to finish this year out at $500k revenue with a 40% Gross Profit Margin.

    My dad has been a painter for about 30 years now. My uncles (his younger brothers) are all painters as well. Ive work with them on & off throughout the years gaining experience & now that I’m in my mid 20’s i decided to pursue the family business. I’ve came to the realization that it will be an easy start up for me since my pops already has tons of connections that he can pass down to me. Wish me luck.

    This was a really excellent video. I've been into business about 34 years. First started as a high end painting company and then put into whole house, renovation and kitchen and design along with the painting. The only thing I was strongly disagree with on this video. And maybe it's because where he is located at. I'm in the chicago area and suburbs.. Paint is very expensive here and primers. Fifty dollars a gallon and up pretty much.. Have a paint, I buy for each specific project.. I would say my painting cost for each project. Materializes 2 tp 3 thousand dollars and up.. And then insurance here is very high also. But I thoroughly enjoyed the video. He is a very talented person and very creative with his artwork

    This is a good small business model for a local who does very small projects within the immediate neighborhood. A base of ten or twelve locals in a suburban neighborhood with family houses can be profitable from word of mouth, reasonable prices, and reliability. But it's a very specific set of circumstances. Homeowners can be notorious for wanting more work than what was under contract, won't pay for extras and sometimes will hold out final bulk payment because they know a small business can't afford to go to court. So relationship with the clients is everything on this level. The other thing is that if you're working alone and sometimes with a helper you can only do this kind of work into your fifties. Injuries or health issues will put you in the red real quick. Finally there is a lot of down time with interior and exterior house painting. You're really busy only six months out of the year.

    If he only charges 75/hr that is super cheap, at least for my area. And for owning your own business. Sure it is decent to cover the basics but not to get well ahead in life. I charge 250-700 plus per hour, The most I have ever made in one day is around 4k. Never charge by the hour.. Charge by the project... If you want to make good money at anything you do, you have got to get very efficient at it. If you are not you will make a lot less. I made about 3k a week when I first started painting 20 years ago.. I try to make $1,000 a day minimum. Average is 2k a day. Will be making more videos for my channel, just started not long ago on here.

      @@chasedeschamps850 I started working with realtors mostly to get my foot in the door, I charged a lot less then. But it was needed to get more referrals and do more projects.. I would take almost any house I could land, do the best I could and just grew my client base with lots of 16 hour long work days.. It only cost me about $1,400 upfront for a business license, bond and insurance.. My first sprayer was a graco 190es junk that could never keep up with me, but it did the job slowly.. Exteriors are usually easier to get because a lot of homeowners want to paint inside themselves..
      Yea mostly worked with realtors, and would hand out my business cards to everyone I met even at the grocery store I would mention I paint houses.. I also did a lot of walking nice neighborhood passing out flyers on doors.. It takes a lot of effort to get traction, but the more you do, the more it improves every year.. Lots of years of feast or famine, as in eating steak spring through fall and beans in the winter.. Learn to save for the slow months.. :) I haven't spent much time on youtube making videos, because I have a hard time investing in things when I am not making a return right away.. But I am going to do business consultations for about $500 an hour and advanced training in person on some occasions..
      Over 20 years of learning from my mistakes, and perfecting my skills... I never had a good teacher for business or painting.. Just had to learn on my own.. If I had, I would have been much farther in life and business now..

    As an artist running a solo painting business for many years, this was a great vid! But $3k/week? Thats $75/hr for a 40 hr work week...are painters really making that much on the regular? I charge $45-50/hr and always wonder how I compare to the other paint contractors. Any thoughts?

      @joeloretto Год назад

      How you come about to your clients to charge them that much

    • @TimOliphant1
      @TimOliphant1 Год назад +6

      While $75/hr (my current goal rate) may seem like it's on the higher side, consider comparing that to a larger painting company with tons of overhead. Many times customers get multiple estimates yet I've still gotten the project. Sometimes they've even told me I was the priciest but they want quality. A little more about my journey...My first year working for myself, I aimed to make $25 an hour (this was 2011). That was double what I was previously paid working for a large painting company that I knew was charging $40-45/hr (but paying me only $12). As I got more solo work, specifically referral work, I gradually increased pricing. As I got more experience, I learned which projects tended to make more and prioritized those. Most importantly, is getting into neighborhoods that, simply put: have money. If a house is worth $800k, their budget for painting (and willingness and ability to pay) will be far greater than a house worth $150k. Also, 15 years into painting, I can accomplish about 3 times the workload in a day than I could early on. If you're making around $50/hr as a painter, I'd say your doing way better than most! Last, I should point out that I don't work anywhere near a 50 week work year, as my style of working 110% burns me out. If you're staying relatively busy, consider quoting higher end projects a bit higher. You might be pleasantly surprised at the results! Good luck my fellow artist!

    Almost 30 years painting
    9 inch out of a clean 5 gallon bucket. No screen
    You cant out pace us with the setup shown
    Sleeves should be replaced after every 50 gallons /per large job.
    Basically if you roll a whole house, it should be replaced
    Otherwise your 3/4 becomes a 1/2
    Then that 1/2 becomes a 1/4.
    You end up beating yourself up production wise not replacing
    For walls

      You need to be charging way more lol 30 an hour is hurting you big time... anything goes wrong and your done for profit.

      $30 an hour isn't a business rate, it's a wage.

      I live in a relatively small town and I charge $50 per guy on the job site. If I do a job alone I charge minimum $75. As far as material if you have a company discount you charge original price to customers if not try 15% of original price if you buy

    I started my painting business with sandpaper, tub of filler, 1 brush, 1 pot, 1 roller/pole+tray.
    Today i have nothing due to a enevitable chronic drinking habit painters just pick up along the way
