    ABOUT THE LESSON 📚
Let's talk about some expressions that are distinctly American. If traveling in the US, it's likely you may hear these expressions. And certainly feel free to use them when having a conversation with your American friends. If you read this description, I just want to give you props for being such an amazing person. In case you'd like to review, here are the expressions from the lesson.
    1) Whatever.
    2) My bad.
    3) to lose touch (with someone)
    4) to plead the 5th
    5) I couldn't care less.
    6) LIKE
    7) to give (someone) props
    8) John Hancock
    9) to get ahead of (oneself)
    10) It's all good.

Hey teacher! I want to say... " thank you for your videos". I really felt very American with these expressions though I'm Colombian. I didn't know these words before. I will share these expressions with my Facebook friends who are learning American English too. English is my favorite language and once again..." Thank you!". RUclips is my English teacher now. I don't need expensive English textbooks nor English tutors; not even expensive academies to learn and to improve my English. The best of all...it's free!

I want to thank you for what you do! You must have spent a lot of time looking for all those words in different movies and cutting them. I also like it how you use all the words in a context, and it's really easier to memorize the words you teach that way.
Thank you a lot for the efforts you make to help us get better at English! Keep up the great work!

I can do a pretty good American Accent too, I just need to learn various expressions Idioms & slang too so I can ‘get with the Program’. Another one I’ve learned is ‘I got this!’, meaning It I know what I’m doing!’!

-"No, we usually lose touch a little, but then kept communicating as always. Now,however, none of us texted for six months, and I'm really obsessed with it."
-"I wish," the judge insisted, "that you not plead the fifth. In addition, I assume that if you tell it, you won't be potentially punished."
-"No, she gave him props at the very beginning of their relationship; and that's pretty sus, I would say."
-"I just need your John Hancock right here, right?"
-"It seems like you're getting ahead of yourself; if not, my bad, really!"
Thank you very much for this tip-top video!
    "Although I'm like a teenager, I don't like like using "like"😊

There's nothing bad with like really. It's an interjection which is used to moderate the flow of conversation. People like to exaggerate it for comedic or denigrating effect, but I don't see what makes it a bad habit to use it naturally. It's one of the most common words in spoken English.
'Like' can honestly be really important in the way that a lot of people speak. It's also different from the like used in place of 'think' or 'say.' Where am older person might say "so i says and then he says and then she says," you might day "so i was like and he was like and she was like."
Yeah, there's a certain style of speech which is very exaggerative and associated with young people which uses like a lot, but I think its stigma has a lot more to do with the stress and intonation of it, and its heavy use of exaggerative language which does include 'like' but also things like 'literally' or 'totally.' It's really the combination of all of those things as well as the mood which is often difficult to tell (it's often meant to be a lot more sarcastic or passive aggressive by using hyperbolic language which can be difficult to get. I struggle with it myself sometimes).
But all of these are used very commonly including like, outside of that exaggerative youngspeech. Like, you know?

    Hi,
    Great video, thank you!
I thought that ' to be like = to say ' was OK to say. The rest of the like you mention is of course very wrong and sounds cacophonic. It was a very fun way to describe like, Congrats, you're the boss!

    • @InteractiveEng
      @InteractiveEng  4 года назад +3

Thanks for commenting. Glad you enjoyed the lesson. The use of LIKE is widespread, and the example you mention is extremely common and I use it the way you mentioned. And you're right, it's common to say, "and I was like (direct quote)," which takes the place of "to say." People may use this when telling a story. Just keep in mind "to be like" does not always mean "to say." (This is like the best movie.) 😉👍
