- Drivers, of all the things to consider when doing rideshare, I think the topic of unaccompanied minors doesn't even get a second thought. Just the phrase, unaccompanied minors, sounds intimidating. Children under the age of 18 used to need to be with an adult 18 years or older in order to ride with Uber and Lyft. Now Uber has stooped to new lows by encouraging parents to give permission for their children (13+) to ride by themselves.
This is just one of many things that jeopardize driver's safety. Watch the video to learn some interesting facts about unaccompanied minors. Can you make money giving unaccompanied minor rides? Yes, of course you can. Can you ruin your living and even your life giving unaccompanied minor rides? Yes, of course you can.

What is also unsettling with parents is how they dont buckle up their children. The amount of times Ive asked the child to buckle up, and the parent gives me this dirty look.

I turned down a $20 ride this morning because it was for minors that the parent requested the ride for.
I think that is a wise move! Maybe the parents will wonder why it might not be a good idea to so easy entrust your children to strangers. Russ

Absolutely! Our time is valuable and that $5 cancellation fee is really marginal considering you may have had to drive several miles just to get to the pickup location. Russ
I have a friend who does uber, he took 2 girls to school one morning a while back, and one of them started eating something in his car, he asked them to stop, they didn't want to, and it erupted into a threat that she's going to claim he tried to touch her if he didn't just get on with the ride. The girl she was with was even trying to tell her own friend/sister/whatrever to knock it off but this entitled brat was willing to do anything to get her way. Fortunately my friend had a camera for safety reasons so such threats would be hard to prove. I can't imagine it's worth it to even risk letting a child you're not related to into your car for any reason the way things are right now.

Right after I had turned 18, I was running late to one of my first couple of shifts of my first job. My Uber pulled in and asked "do you have an ID?" I was so flustered and said no and she said she couldn't do the ride, leaving quickly. The dumbest thing on my part is that I DID have an ID, I had just gotten it 😂 just was so used to being underage/not having one
Oh no, that is a time when you regret the words leaving your mouth almost immediately! I don't like when I do things like that too....or click the mouse at the wrong spot or push the wrong button. Russ
I drive Uber, and something I hate are "surprises". The app does not tell you how many passengers you are picking up. I've had situations where I go to ostensibly pick up one person, and I find a crew of 4 people there. Coming back from the bars or clubs. So, one of them is sitting next to me in the passenger seat. The app also does not confirm if the person requesting the ride is the actual passenger. I once went to pick up "April" for an airport ride at 5am. When I arrived in the dark, there was a scruffy 30 something dude there who did not look like a traveler. He had no bags or backpack, and he was wearing dirty jeans, sneakers & a hoodie. His mother, April, set up the ride for him on her phone and was not riding with him. I also had a situation where I went to pick up a "female", and it was two unaccompanied teenage boys. Mama was sending them off to high school 20 miles away.
Yes I can relate to those surprises as well. Bottom line is Uber and Lyft do not care and so the driver is bearing the risk and the backlash from the company. I recall a “hypothetical” family sending twin girls under 10 to school 15 miles away in an Uber….and of course no booster seats. Thank you for sharing these facts! Russ
I have learned thru hard lessons NOT to take ANY of the riders if there are more than 4. I hate having 4 people in my little car. It weighs down the car a lot. Its very stressful for me to have someone sitting next to me. I have had them adjust the ac, mess with the radio, and worse of all, grab at me. I had accepted a ride the other day. The pay was crap but it was going to take me to an area I enjoy being in, so I though.. why not? it was $21 for 30 frickin miles! a crap deal.. then the "trip coordinator" text me and said there would be FOUR passengers. I CANCELED that crap ride! I text back and said no there wont be! If you get more than 4 wanting a ride, and you tell them NO! they are angry .. and must order a 2nd car. So they WILL give you a one star rating and be very annoyed with you while you give them a ride in your car! The $3.25 for a short ride around campus to a bar, or the $21 for four passengers.. coming from a resort.. what are these people thinking? 4 people, what is that, $5.50 per person to go 30 miles? its just plain ugly! I am on a rant here! but if you drive away, when there are more than 4, you can CANCEL, you get the cancelation fee if you wait it out, and save your rating.
@@veganjem All true points! I had four in my car going from a winery to Los Angeles. It was crowded and I had the AC on for airflow. My car is cramped with three adults in the back too. Four riders will be much happier in an XL category or larger car period. Russ
@@TheRussRyde the fact that we don’t get an extra penny for extra people is just so wrong. It is more weight in the car more wear and tear on the car and more wear on your mind.

Many parents don’t care enough and hide with the excuse of their careers. As a kid under 20 years old I never took a cab. I only rode my bike to where ever I had to go.

First of all, Always keep your doors locked. Then ask for Identification. If they don't have Identification, then PRESS THE CANCEL BUTTON.
Then take off. No questions asked.

Yes, this is the way to protect yourself from many unnecessary risks! Once someone is in your car it is much more difficult to get them out. Thank you for sharing this easy way to protect yourself! Russ
I wait and COLLECT the cancelation fee! AND I report them, you can go to help, feedback for a rider, then select "requested dangerous driving". and you can UNPAIR yourself with that person there. They wont learn a lesson as long as there are drivers willing to do this illegal thing. so you get a lil fee, save your rating and a possible ticket. If there are more people than seatbelts, there is zero insurance! If I have 5 or 6 passengers for my small car, including myself, that is a huge medical bill if there is an accident. and you will of course be deplatformed, most likely get a huge fine! Maybe even jail time if someone is seriously injured.

I just ask for their age, if they say 18, I ask what year they were born, watch what happens..... LOL!! Then I report the ride to Uber, get my cancellation fee, and Uber places the account on hold asking the rider to verify their age with a valid state ID and a picture next to the ID.

There are many reasons a parent might get a ride for their child. Their car is broken down, they are at work, having a situation evolve that they cant be on time to pick up their child. I still dont want to do it tho. I had two teens in my car, a few years ago, picked up when school got out. They were making out in the back seat. Wtf am I supposed to do? I cant monitor them while watching the road.. I dont want teen pregnacies to happen in my back seat! These rides are supposed to be "monitored", .listened to. however this ride I wasnt notified that these were going to be under age riders.. I no longer will accept. I have this "uber teen" turned off!

Sooo.... college kids dont have backpacks? How can you claim the things you do with no data to back up anything.
I think the older you get the harder it is to tell age of those younger. I would encourage any driver to think about the potential for an unaccompanied minor if they see a backpack. It’s a reminder, nothing more. I frequently carry a backpack too. I can speak from experience doing rideshare. I wouldn’t make a video unless I knew something about the topic.
I simply ask: "How old are you?"..... Some kids just tell you their age, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17... But some kids are clever and say the magic number 18, but not soooo fast! I then ask the kid, what year were you born? It throws them off guard because these kids don't do simple math so fast. Remember, everyone knows what year they were born without even thinking about it. So I catch them in a lie.... Girl said she was 18, I then asked what year was she born she said 2002... LOL!! We're in 2024, if you're born in 2002 and it's 2024, how are you still 18 leaving High School???......... RIDE DECLINED, reported to Uber, rider's account placed on hold until rider can provide valid ID she's 18 to removed hold. I cancel 10-15 unaccompanied minor rides per day......

I recommend drive only during the day until you get used to it. A dashcam is a must to protect you. Most people are fine. It’s just the small percentage who make things a nightmare and scary. Keep in mind that riders need you to get to work so they are grateful for your services. Looking back I would try to only take short trips so you have a better chance of more tips because of more riders and less miles on your car. Adults can do any of these types of things. Any good driver should have a camera, that footage protects you.
They sure can! Every rideshare driver is taking a risk giving a ride to anyone, no matter the age. I agree! I think a dashcam is a must and a minimum to help provide driver safety. Thank you for sharing your valuable insight! Russ
I have a dashcam, voice recorder live at all times and I simply ask the teen, how old are you? Once they tell me their age, depending on if it's 18, I then ask what year were they born...... You should see their responses... LOL!! I was born 1999.... yeah and we're in year 2024..... RIDE CANCELLED!

As far as accusations, the dash cam recording the adult riders would also record the other riders, and I would have video to show that none of that stuff happened .

Incredible video! Unfortunately you do have drivers that don't care or don't know so it puts great drivers in bad situations when telling "unaccompanied minors" .... NO! They say "All The other drivers do it!".... I say, good for them, they're willing to take the risk. Also, with there being an accident everyday, if you get into a car accident with a minor, UBER & LYFT will not cover the accident and drivers can be sued by parents/legal guardian. UBER & LYFT has a policy no passengers under 18 without an adult but here's the shady kicker.... UBER & LYFT still allow these "minors" to download their apps without "AGE VERIFICATION: Uploading valid state ID" to validate the passengers is indeed 18 years or older to ride. Awesome Video!
Thank you for your feedback. I agree to all you said. Sadly Uber is sneaking the Uber teen thing in and it’s going to really put drivers in a tough spot. Drivers should wake up and realize there is danger ahead and to go the other way! Russ
@@TheRussRyde .... YUP! I could send you what parents are suppose to do for Uber For Teens. They are suppose to sign an attestation on the app but these parents will often use the "GUEST" feature to bypass the Uber for Teens. The "GUEST" feature in the app is for passengers 18 years or older. Uber for Teens is ages 13-17. I never opted in the Uber For Teens because dealing with minors is a different monster as your video also says. This is an awesome video Russ! I have 22,000 pickups and I found a way to get "unaccompanied minor" accounts placed on hold with Uber so that it forces teens to send in a valid state ID to verify their age.

Unfortunately some drivers have to find out the hard way...... Drivers better pray they don't get into a car accident with a minor, UBER & LYFT will disown you. If that kid gets hurt, be prepared to pay their medical bills along with being sued by the parents/legal guardian for violating UBER"s or LYFT's terms of service. It's at a driver's own risk.... DON'T DO IT!!!
