- CV Boot rebuild: 2 to 4 hours ($25 / $225 / $360)
In this video I rebuilt the inner and outer CV axles. The boots were torn so I took them totally apart and put them back together. It was done on a Volvo S70, both sides. Passenger side outer, drivers side inner. Should be the same on all CV axle boots.

Years later I am still keeping the old Volvo going with your well planned help. Thanks as always.
you are welcome.
Thank you Robert, I been watching you lately as I have recently purchased a 98 v70xc. I appreciate what you been doing. I don't even worry about checking the manual any more. I just go check and see what Robert has to say about it. You da man, keep it up. Much love brother!
LOL, thanks for watching.
I have used your advice many times and appreciate you. You don't know how good you are, your amazing!
Thanks for your kind words and for watching.
I own a 95 Volvo 850 Stw which had a completely broken in half CV axle boot on the driver side. This video is so great and extremely detailed that I had no fear of screwing the job, and changed out the whole CV joint as they are cheap to replace.
Awesome. Thanks for watching.
Thanks so much for sharing your expertise, Robert! You're showing the easiest way. Removing the control arm from the sub frame (rather than the strut as per Haynes repair manual) was the best advise. Took me a couple of hours and it was all done.
Glad to help
As always a GIANT Thank You! Everyone benefits from Robert! I count on you for my home mechanics trouble shooting my Volvo's! My ball joint failed (thankfully in a school zone speed) and ripped apart my inner boot and pulled the axel apart. Thanks for helping me put it all together again properly! Much appreciation for providing good RUclips content!
Wow! Must be an area of rust?
Should not have been. It was only two years old. It was a Lemförder, so I was shocked it failed that quickly. It was feeling off for a few months but I attributed it to the shocks I just replaced failing…. I just was not on top of it. Very lucky to have it fail at 20kph and a block away from the house. Still had to get it towed home.
Most importantly, your RUclips is what helps people like me out. Again sending out the positive thoughts to you and for everything you do.
Finally got around to putting the winter tyres on, and noticed a big greasy mess. Doesn't look like a bad job, so I know what I'm doing this weekend. Thanks for the excellent how to videos!
Nice, thanks for watching.
@@RobertDIY I might have messed up. I lost my scratch mark on the hub, so it definitely didn't go back on the same way. But I think GKN balances the axle and the hub separately so maybe it will be okay? Apparently it will cost me $800 to have it balanced at the only local machine and driveline shop.
Thanks I own a 95 850 in great shape. I seem to keep finding your vids when I look for how to's and you are always very helpful keep up the good work.
+Jim DuFrane thanks for watching.
Thanks for this video Robert! I just did this on my 2003 XC70 (should be the same for any second gen V70 or other P2 I guess). The only difference I ran into is that there doesn't seem to be a snap ring on the outer joint on my car. The inner joint is identical. I just cleaned the outer joint as best as I could, packed it with new grease, installed a new boot and hope for the best.
Anyway, thanks for the video; it gave me sufficient information and confidence to attempt this myself!
You are welcome.
Cheers mate, you're a legend to us home mechanics!! Excellent as always! In this 'disposable' society it saves a fortune to replace parts yourself if you don't mind getting your hands a bit mucky!! Thanks loads for sharing!
you are welcome.
Excellent video, a little different than my Nissan, but the basic steps are very similar. Yours might be the only video that warns about reassembling the parts in the same positions they were in. Good tip about the scratch marks. Thanks Robert!
Thanks for watching.
Brilliant video, this just happened to my V50, only noticed when cleaning the car and the barrel brush came out black, and was getting blacker and blacker, so had a look and feel and noticed it was oily, upon further inspection I seen it was my CV Boot had shat it's guts all over the inside of the wheel 😩😩😩
Great detailed video, Thanks Robert 😎👍🏻🏴
Yuk! You are welcome.
I am embarking on a journey with my volvo s60. Really liked the pace of the video and your explanations. I may do the cv boot job myself thanks to this.... a lot to do. Wish me luck never done this before!
Thanks for watching, more messy than hard. lol
Due to the winter I suspended the project. Having reviewed the whole video again.... I'm doubting myself. Especially since I just sheared off the retaining nut for the brake rotor after taking it off, then realizing I didn't have to, and reinstalling it... and breaking it off...... dumb.
Thanks alot! im gonna change my outer CV boot on my 855 turbo, very good video :D
Thanks for watching
Exactly what I needed. Thanks for good instructional videos.

Thanks Robert.. You've saved me a few times.. I love your videos! Cheers

Very nice video again Robert , thanks for this !!

thanks. Was very helpful especially with the clips, the whole thing did not take time but i was stuck with the clip I have Volvo s80 1999 very nice car i like very it s old have some small problems and wants to fix by my self and this way i am learning also. Once again thanks
You are welcome.
normally I tend to avoid rebuilt axles as well as aftermarket ones because the rebuilds are often not done right and the aftermarket ones often don't last that long or work as good. however, after watching your video on how you go about rebuilding cv axles and half shafts, I wouldn't hesitate to have you do a job like this.
+Michael Sackstein :), Thanks.
I took it off, dismantled it and reassembled it. It was 5 ball bearings and a ring with holes. It all went in deep and nice, but after putting back on the car it just span again... I need to skip work and go get new left drive shaft/axle tomorrow. I'll have a closer look at it once I have time.
Maybe something wrong with the transmission.
very helpful video!! great work!! keep up the videos!
Thanks for watching.
Another great video sir.
Glad you enjoyed it
Great video. Very clear instructions.
Glad it was helpful!
Great help - I have saved tons of $'s - thanks

My mom wants me to replace the axle boots on her Jeep Grand Cherokee. she got some parts, two rods with boots. Still pretty new to mechanics but I plan on getting an apprenticeship so this will be good practice.
+Softly Aes cool, thanks for watching.
Robert you are a legend
Thanks for watching. ;)
thank u so much robert u saved my bacon i almost broke my cv joint
cool, thanks for watching.
You, sir, are a Godsend.
Thanks for watching
I was doing lower control arm and tie rod replacement and the innner axle joint just span after I put everything back together. Very useful to see the inside now I have hope of putting it back together withouth having to unmount everything... Maybe it just popped out, or did I somehow ruin the snap ring. Anyway, thanks
Probably just popped out a little.
well done video, very informative
+Evan Turnbull Thank you for watching.
doing this as we speak, thank you Robert!
you are welcome.
Coming back years later and still using your videos. Quality content. I just wish there was a good rebuilt M66 trans axle. If you know of a pair for the 04 SR let me know.
I don't know
Thanks for the video. Great info..

This guy is damn GOOD ... I wish he did Toyota's too!
+g quinn they should be the same.
DIY > My son has to change his outside boots (850T) and do you recommend the split boot or sticky boot?
Whatever it came with.
?
@@RobertDIY i think g quinn means one that just folds around that you then glue together. i think this would be more of an emergency/temporary solution.
A great guide. Regards Adam

Any tips on getting outer joint off, that does not have the clip access like this? 2006 P2 I have tried CV joint puller, dead blow mallet, it will not separate from shaft.
Sad to say, I have no idea.
what is the tool you used Robert to snap the rings onto the boots when you were done?..
Oklier pliers.
Do you take donations?
I just replaced my rear suspension springs with your help. And you have helped me out a lot the last 5 years.
yes sir. you can go to my website and go from there.
Hi robert, what would you recommend i do when i had a inner cv joint boot tear and i think the tripod joint is worn. Should i buy a new tripod and change it on the axle?
I would replace the axle.
Thank you all your advices was right
+Pavlos Stefanidis you are welcome.
Awesome video.
Thanks for watching.
Great video robert. I have a 2001 s60. Is the drivers side cv the same process as the passenger?
I don't understand your question. 🤔
Hi Robert,
I am, very much enjoyed whaching your videos. i am always follow your tips doing my repairs.
Question: Could you help me to choose proper outer boot size for my Volvo 850? It is 96' Volvo 850 non-turbo engine B5252S, manual gearbox. In the shop they are proposing me sizes: H:81mm, D1:82mm, D2:22mm but i think it is too small from the axle side. My axle is about 33mm when i measured it. Maybe the boot is so strechy and can extend from 22 to 33mm? let me know if you have any experiences in this topic. Thanks!
Yes they do stretch. Other than that, I don't know.
Hi Robert I’ve changed my control arm on my 02 s60 and the ball joints tearing into my rim any idea what's wrong?
Sounds like you did not install it properly?
Awesome video thanks
You are welcome.
Hi Robert, I have to say thanks again for this video as I'm almost done doing this job. The outside cv joint was tight just as you say in the video and I think that gently driven non-turbo cars might just stay tight like new. How is this tight axle doing is it lasting? Also, the inside would not come out from the cup, I had to really pull it and the tabs bent a bit - I'll just tap them back into place. I did not remove the inside off of the shaft, just dunked it in a can of degreaser and sprayed it with carb cleaner, seemed to work fine. Slid the inside boot on from the outside end of the shaft. I have to say thanks again for another great video.
Cool. That car is long gone.
Good video
Thanks for watching.
I have an 04 c70 the boot is ripped, would u suggest just buying an entire new cv axle for 50 bucks Instead of the boot kit ?
if it's a volvo axle, i would fix it.
hi, I changed the CV Boot a few months ago (left front side) of my Volvo 850, 1995, it was all good, but around 3 weeks, every time that I turn to the right , my car is making noises in the left front side. "clip, clip,clip"...I don't know what it is, can you give me any advice please? . Many thanks, I'm Claudio from New Zealand
+Claudio Navea Probably a bad axle. Can you upload a video of it?
yeah youre awesome robert thank you
You are welcome
Hello Robert DIY. I bought a 1998 V70 2.4Turbo Automatic few months back, tonight, the left outer CV Joint "blew up". All of the bearings came out. I got a question tho. Does the transmission fluid come out when i pull the driverside drivesaft out, or is it sealed? I had a Ford Mondeo, that spilled its tranny fluid when i pulled the driveshaft out, so thats why im curious. I hope you will reply quick enough. I love your videos and keep on making them! Got yourself a new subscriber :)

Well I will ask if I need help thank you for the help
Thanks for watching
Do you have to clean out all the grease? I did anyways, just wondering.
Yes
Does anyone know if my 1999 V70 has a tripoid inner join or one with ball bearings? I replaced the lower control arm and managed to pull the inner joint out, and now it seems that I am going to have to take it apart for reassembly. Some say that some of these have an inner joint with six ball bearings which are a real pain to assemble.
I've never had to remove one to get it back in. Just grab the shaft and work it back in.
@@RobertDIY Hi Robert! Some Volvo guys here in Finland said that my V70 almost certainly has the inner joint with the six ball bearings, and NOT the tripoid type, and that the balls have come off the joint, which means that I have to remove the whole shaft in order to reassemble the inner joint. Working on this assumption, what could be the problem when I have successfully removed the semicircular part that holds the support bearing in place (3:55 in your video) but I cannot seem to be able to pull the shaft off. I have very little space under the car to work in, and the support bearing does not seem to want to move out of the other semicircular half of the part that holds it in place. Which way do I need to pull?
Hey Mr Robert, do I have to clean the axle when replacing the boot? It doesn't click or make noise
I always do. Did one yesterday. Also add new axle grease.
Didn't the video explain that?
Hi Robert, I recently installed front left coil spring in my Volvo V40. Some how the CV boot came out with grease and I installed back with uneven it's 3 bearings . I drove my car for nearly 260 KM without any noise or trouble. Did you think of any possibility this axle can come out later on because of such uneven bearings or it will eventually rest on it's proper housing. THANKS,
+Mohad Hady if it is missing bearings just replace it.
+Robert DIY thanks, this is what I am planning to do before it came out although it didn't make any sound.
Hi Robert, great videos. I have the ETS light on in my 98 s70 (non turbo). I cleaned throttle and changed air filter and light went out for about 3 hours but now back on again. Do you think it's the mass airflow sensor or definitely the ETM? If it is the ETM will I need Volvo to clear codes or can I simply replace ETM and be set?
'98 Volvo's in the USA do not have ETS lights. Have you searched my channel for that issue? Have you scanned the system for codes?

Sorry it is a 99"
Hi Robert, thanks for links, again I actually have a 99' S70, ETS light has now gone out :) I used TB cleaner either side of mass airflow sensor and aimed some down the hose towards the Throttle.
Hi Robert...love your site... Question: I have a 99 Volvo S70...my mechanic replaced both CV joints and the driver's side has been leaking and he's had to redo the install twice...finally, he had to order original volvo parts...he claims there's only one seal (Driver's side) and there is no seal on passenger side...does that sound right? I can find nothing on it. I appreciate any advice.
What's leaking? Auto or manual? AWD or FWD?
Robert DIY auto fwd
What is leaking?
Robert DIY my only question is this...my mechanic claims there is only a transmission seal on drivers side...not passenger...is that possible?
Robert DIY the drivers side cv axle transmission seal
Do you know of this would be similar on an xc90?
should be the same on all cv axles.
I did an engine swap on a 2005 Volvo S60 turbo I don't remember how the wires connect on the engine can you help me out please
Sure, bring it by.
@@RobertDIY hey Robert I figured out the wire after everything is all hooked up how do I tune it up

Hi Robert. Thanks for the great vids. I am trying this on my volvo s60 2006 t5, and i do not see any clip on the aspect of the cv joint you are showing around 6:20 in the video. Thoughts on this?
Have you cleaned all of the grease off?
Robert DIY as much as i was able to without dissassembling
May have to clean all of it off to see the clip.
No clips once disassembled. Had to get creative to get both sides off it was tough. Perhaps something witht he s60? Idk man.
double00troubleable hope you read this man.
Same here i dont see the clip, how did u get it off?
On my 96 850, the outer CV joint doesn’t have a snap ring like one in your video that I can remove to get the shaft out of the joint. The shaft wiggles a little bit, but something is holding it in. Do you know how to separate them?
Remove the snap ring.
Robert DIY there is no snap ring
OK, replace it, the entire thing.
Thank You Sir.
You are welcome
Do you know if the boots are different on the rear cv axle shafts on a 98 v70R? I don't know where to get a boot kit if there are any out there.
Have you checked Volvo parts suppliers?
Yeah, but I cannot seem to find a boot kit instead of buying the whole axle shaft. Perhaps they are the same on the rear as they are on the front
I doubt that. take it to a local axle place, they will have a solution.
11:00 Some driveshafts have a different style of clip on the shaft that you cant see as you put the CV joint on. How do you know when the clip is in place?
It will not pull apart.
@@RobertDIY OK but mine (Original Volvo S40 2003 automatic DRIVESHAFT-TO-CV joint) are so stiff to put together, I can't tell when the clip is engaged. Any tips? In fact when I took the right side CV joint apart (which had an aftermarket boot on it), there was no clip in the joint, and from the vehicle's service history, that joint had been replaced 7 years ago!
Maybe tow it to a garage and have them do it.
@@RobertDIY The previous work where the clip was missing WAS done by a garage... I have their invoice in the service history...
10:00 so after greasing it, it ended up running ok and not jamming anymore?
Huh? It works fine.
@@RobertDIY sorry, i should have also marked 8:15, where you mention "this one is really tight". you didn't mention if or that repacking it solved that. but good thing it did!
I am going to fix my Subaru impreza in the next few days, the inner boots needs to be replaced as soon as possible to save some money instead of buying whole axles from the dealer which cost about 250 bucks , I prefer using the flex plastic boots they live forever, unlike the rubber boots, they live for 3 years maximum.
I just learned that lesion.
How long can I drive on a ripped cv boot before the internal parts fail? There still lube/grease inside the boot makes no noise yet
About 2000miles then shit start to break. Did on mine atleasr

The passenger side axle inner joint seems more difficult to remove. I've had no luck so far
It's the same 6 ball joint as the outer one. So needs to be removed the same way. Very difficult when doing alone, grab a second person to smack it out while you hold the c-clip open.
Yes it can be tough.
@@RobertDIY Finally got the shaft removed from the joint, but removing the ball joint itself seems impossible. Have you done it before? I made a post here: facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10163058291290247&set=gm.10156730853926471&type=3&theater&ifg=1

@@nelaco1 If you have a automatic car then you will have no issues - it will be just like Robert's video. Unfortunately for manual 850's, the inner axle ball joint can not be removed, since the axles are built slightly different. Volvo even states this: "On manual

I have that circlip open over 8mm on my 95 850 pass side with 5spd, but the joint just won't come off. Mine might look a hair different. I might have to admit defeat and re-install without changing the intact but old boot. We'll I have another month , car is not registered. Picture : www.brickboard.com/GALLERY/volvopic.htm?js_link=&id=13095
It can be frustrating.
I got it finally. The key was for me to make sure the circlip was fully open while my wife hammered out the joint.
Currently, $80-110 completely rebuilt from AutoZone or O Rielys. Not worth rebuilding.
so it's best to get a new cheap axle that will shake in a week than rebuild one that will be straight for 5 more years. Got it!
I was prepping my car for its test and found a RAT had chewed a hole in my boot :(((

Hey, Robert love the videos. my money's tight and you are keepin' me on the road, so i can pursue my music production hobby, thank you thank you thank you. a quick question about the snap ring clip at 6:15 removal of snap ring clip. it appears removal of CV joint from axle is done by slipping it off away from the snap ring clip. i am questioning the necessity of removing it, unless it is in the way of hitting the CV joint for removal. here Eric ruclips.net/video/-S-ofMoWsr0/видео.html doesn't seem to remove it 4:15 to 4: 27 on his video. is that the same snap ring, still there on the shaft in the background?
I have no idea what Eric is doing. My example is on a CV axle that I pulled from a Volvo.
@@RobertDIY my car isn't clicking, it is making a whirring sound, as if the tires are running on textured pavement, when i release off the gas, at freeway speeds. when i have even a little gas on, it is silent. could it possibly be a bad CV joint? sounds like it's coming from the drivers side front wheel. thanks again! i am hoping to run a few hundred miles before repair
Could be a wheel bearing.
@@RobertDIY since i don't want to pay for a diagnosis, i'll just replace the bearing first and if that doesn't do it i might do the CV joints, i think their all due for some attention. thanks for being there and the quick reply, that is really helpful as i am leaving in a few minutes, thanks for the suggestions. have a great day!
