I had a project in my Asian literature class that had to be inspired by one of the pieces we read in class. After watching your videos, I really wanted to do pixel art of the main characters in Journey to the West! I never finished since I'm not very skilled at pixel art, but it's amazing to see what I wanted to do in one of your videos! :D
Watching your work on the rock wall was a revelation. You made the complex shapes come together so smoothly. I have a new appreciation for the skill you bring to this art style.
That's your secret weapon to beat the game now : 1/ Get wrecked by a boss. 2/ Learn all you can about them online 3/ Still get wrecked by said boss 4/ Rip some hair 5/ Make a pixel art of said boss to calm down 6/ While making said pixel art, accidentally discover weakpoints of the boss 7/ go back to the game and wreck the boss. 8/ Celebrate 9/ Get wrecked by the next boss. Rinse and repeat. At the end of this series, you could officially have Game Science sponsor your channel ^^
2:47 Single Pixel - Outside the Outline Sounds like a song in an album 🎶 This video is a little more unhinged than usual, I hope this game is treating you well...though if it leads to more of these vids then I wouldn't mind! 🐵 Loved the art, especially the texturing in the stone, and the segment where you explored some staff angles was really insightful!
Hahaha that really does, I'd totally listen to Single Pixel 🤘😎 And yeah I think the unhingedness was really cathartic for getting though the game and the artwork - we'll see what happens as I continue to play more 🫠
so much good advice in this video. as a certified "bad at coloring" person, there were a lot of really helpful tips as far as usage of color (ex: the various ways you blend color transitions as well as the way you used contrast for depth). this was a great concise walkthrough of effective lazy "art-ing" sprinkled with enough tips that even people who've barely dipped their toes into the medium can follow along and gain a lot of insight from it :D thank you for making this video!! it is much appreciated! (note: lazy = good. to be lazy is to reduce required effort. aka, being efficient. (lazy is just one of my professor's way of summarizing that concept)) (note on why note exists: words have connotation to them that varies by person. and lazy, for many people, has a connotation that leads to a disappointed/lackluster impression of the element described...)
As one of my college teachers used to say "Work smarter, not harder!" We literally had some assignments that were about how few steps we could do the same process. The one who had the fewest steps set the A grade. He was a good teacher.
Aww the crt time logo being dressed up as sun wukong is a nice touch! Also the end result is amazing and I can tell some extra effort was put into this one. I love the vibrant colors and would definitely play this version if it was a actual game :)
I've been doing pixel art for a bit now, and my first few pieces didn't look too great either. Even now, there's still improvements I can make. Keep at it, and you'll get there eventually.
this video couldn't have come at a better time for me creatively! i've been struggling with ideas on what to make, but i think i'll give a go at re-imagining modern games i like in a similar 16-bit / GBA style. great video, amazing artwork, and thanks for the inspiration!
The original pokemon games use that "new pixel to try" a lot, I figured that out when making a pokemon piece, and it seriously adds a whole new dimension you wouldn't imagine possible. Sometimes it feels like you're adding a whole new color to your palette for free!
This is a really good video! My goal when starting out with pixel art, was exactly to make these type of mockups… which i havent done yet. This gives me some new found inspiration to start messing around with one :D
Lol this video was fantastic. Bamboozle, monkeying around. Super funny. Also, yes, the art is great too. Excellent idea to adjust those colors, the way the greens in the front pop at the end vs the beginning makes it so much stronger. And it's something that's easy to miss too, when you've been working on a piece for a long time. Sometimes you can get lost in there and miss those touches, so I'm glad you didn't.
Thanks dude! ✌️🐵 And yeah, sometimes it's hard to know if what you're changing is even an actual improvement or not. I was a bit hesitant to take away that green from the rocks (I really like the mossy look), but when flipping between the before/after, it felt like the entire piece as a whole was more readable with the larger colour variations 🎨👀
Obviously your skill is amazing, but I also just really love your personality and humor :D Had me crackling when I saw the "monke" layer in Photoshop xD
Your pixel art work is amazing as always. I love watching your videos to help improve my pixel art as well when I get to making my Run and Shoot Platformer game when I get to it. The Monkey King sprite is just perfect in the color style. Background sprites is still tricky for me and seeing how you get it out so smoothly is so cool. Don’t have the game but I’ll get it one day (when they remove DRM). Do you not use Aseprite as well for pixel art?
Cool stuff! I would have added a platform or two, something for Wukong to stand on and attack his weak point, probably his head, or to jump off of and deliver a downward strike on the very top. The pixel art gives Metroidvania vibes, so I'd imagine gameplay like that.
the bamboo stalks feel a pixel or 2 too wide but once they're all spread out through the scene it's not too noticeable and overall the piece looks fantastic
Really like the Art! the environment is a bit undersaturated (on purpose i guess, for more "game" looking) but it's a personnal flavor =P Imagine an animated version of it, just an idle, with some movement on leaves, grass...
I'm enjoying the game as well, and will now enjoy your video after having died in the game due to a particularly stupid timing to attack with all my focus points.
If you weren't aware, Wukong's design in Black Myth was modelled after a Macaque, which is why he has red skin, in this particular iteration of the character.
Hey Brandon! I loved this piece a lot. I was wondering if you had any tips for knowing when you've finalized a sprite? I find myself getting a pretty good base for a sprite but I tend to keep editing it in little ways, changing the shape, even just single pixels, and I never know when to stop fiddling with it. It slows the process way down, amounting to me taking 3 times longer on it.
Yeah I actually do the same thing! I try to be conscious of when I'm just going in circles like that making small adjustments, and I never really consider anything ever "finished" or "perfect", but it's ok to move on when you feel yourself hit that point. For me it usually has to do with the amount of shades/highlights I've added. So if I run out of purposes for new colours, I like to call that my end point (even though I could keep fiddling for hours with very minor changes!) Good luck out there! ✌️☺️✨
I think I preferred the less contrasting version just before the final, it made the rocks in particular feel old and mossy. On the other hand the brighter foreground colours were a welcome change. Another fab video nonetheless!
Thanks! For tips, one thing that worked for me here was making that rough pixel sketch of the scene plan before jumping in to the real work. I know it looks super basic like it wouldn't help, but it only took 1 or 2 minutes to sketch out and really helped having a loose template to anchor the idea while I worked through each little component of the full piece. Good luck!
@@BJGpixel I don’t even know how you would cram so much detail into a HanaPet version. 🙈 Maybe just give it a stick to hold? Like an ape version of Farfetch’d. 😂
I think you should maybe rethink the position of the tail. I know in pixel art it’s more difficult to avoid tangents but since the tail hits perfectly where the hang holds the staff it actually muddies the silhouette instead of making it clear like you thought. It’s almost like he’s holding a weird branch or maybe a bow and arrow. Just a thought!

Draw Tripitaka instead
"If you're looking for a new pixel to try..." xD
It's a very nice pixel :3

What?? I don't get it..
Frustration fan art is always the best XD
have you tried frustration sex...oh boy, next time use your girl, you'll thank me later.
this is so cute 😭 I bet you'd knock it out of the park with other games, too... maybe RE or Elden Ring heh
Thanks! Yeah maybe this'll be a turning point for me! The world design and depth of Elden Ring looks so incredible too ✨
Nothing says cutesy, simple pixel art designs quite like a Fromsoft game. Lol.
Amazing as always, man. Love your videos and really looking forward to Petal Runner
✌️☺️🌸
thanks I was desperately waiting for my single-pixel recommendation of the day!
Haha can't wait to see you put that one pixel to action! 😅
12:21 "a very successfull BAMBOOzle..."
I came to the comments section for this 😂
The pixel recommendation is silly but it makes sense, every pixel is important in pixel art!
Watching your work on the rock wall was a revelation. You made the complex shapes come together so smoothly. I have a new appreciation for the skill you bring to this art style.

“Bamboozle on my part” sick pun dude, mad respect.
the ungreening was beautiful, really color depth
Woah, 19 minutes. Love it! 👍

Your use of colour and line work is so good
This is so cool!! Thanks for showing and also explaining your thought process! Also loved the two song soundtrack 😂😂
11:04 They actually go by "bamboobs"
Your speed art work is kinda like ASMR to me. Please do not stop making such videos.❤

Watching a master work on his craft and improving it year by year is really inspiring, you are insane

S tier video Brandon; really loved this one!
12:16 that joke was smooth
Fantastic as always!
In fact I've had a single pixel recommended to me before, but not this one ;) Thanks for the tip
This looks so awesome
wow this looks sick, well done.
Based Myth Wukong and Based James Green for the artwork.
"I'm not lazy, i'm organic!" shall now be the slogan of the human resistance! Down with AI art!
I'm working on a Wukong mockup myself, and this just dropped right on time! Thanks so much for the inspiration.
enjoyed the style of this video, would love to see it again
Obviously your skill is amazing, but I also just really love your personality and humor :D

Your pixel art so cute! New sub!
Love all of Your work Mr.Greer. i mean it. 💥

This popped up in my recommendeds the day after i started learning sprite art. Cool!
Being "organic" definitely makes it look more like a real retro game!
“I’m not lazy, i’m organic” is now my life quote
I'm surprised, but the color adjustment at the end was a very good decision.
this is so cute! 😍😍
Wow, can't wait to play Black Myth Wukong for the Game Boy Advance.
Did you actually make that playlist ? XD Awesome work!

Is so gorgeus in crt! I didn't get the 16-bit era, but i played my ps2 in a crt tv.
I loooove your humour, Brandon ! 😄
I love the jokes! This game looks so cool but I’m bad at those types of games, I’m worried it would sit unplayed because it’s too hard for me lol
we need the pixel style Wukong to be an actual game 🔥🔥
Incredible playlist

Damn, he is talented and has comedy gold?
I'm enjoying the game as well, and will now enjoy your video after having died in the game due to a particularly stupid timing to attack with all my focus points.
I knew you were adding the wandering wight almost instantly. My friend had such a hard time fighting him, though I beat him on my 4th try.

The video creation style feels different mr.brandon.not in a bad way but you sound more open/friendly (apologies if that comes off wrong)
The whole thinkg gives a feeling like the FC game called FC Jackie Chan, anyways great job~
The joke density in this video is through the roof xD. Brilliant artwork, as always.
The tips are nice. Ill be trying pixels outside the line.
You are super cool fr fr
You never disappoint me.
Amazing!
I really like how you made the rocks. It came together really well.
I really want to do landscape art. Do you have any tips to get started

A pink and purple Wukong? Petal Runner collab confirmed!
We have a monkey HanaPet, so perhaps a bit of costuming change is in order 🤔

beautyful

Amazing
Looks awesome, just add a few more pixels to the canvas 240 × 160 and I could totally see this as a GameBoy Advance game
thank you
Bamboozle 😂
I like watching your videos on my CRT, feels appropriate. You just need to do a 4:3 video now :)
Gasp! I’ve been bamboo-zled
it looks amazing, now please some master make a pixel gameplay of BMW chapter one, LOL
Funniest video yet 😂
10:30 In cooking we use "rustic" :P
It's clearly a souls like. What did you expect? xD
cute~

What pixel font your name in for intro?
"Big Bada Baby"
I wish there were difficulty options -- I for a lot too
Do you use mouse to draw those?
I just unlocked a new pixel
