It’s honestly sad when freaking My Little Pony takes their character development, songwriting (I actually have many of them on Spotify and listen to them daily) and messages way more seriously and with more love. And they kinda have the same plot if you think about it; Magical girl moves to a different part of the world to learn about something she’s been missing. But that’s just it! There’s a REAL, LEGITIMATE reason that Twilight moved away! Because Celestia thought she needed to see how important friendship is, even more than studying; and that sets up Twilight’s character arc as she becomes a confident and responsible leader, seeing just how much more her life could be. But Rosemary’s “arc” isn’t even explained at all! That’s one of the main problems with this garbage heap. Nothing is explained, and the characters have empty motivations. Stuff just happens for no reason. It’s just, “Oh, my mom left, and now I’m sad. Now I’m gonna go to this school to learn about...Something. And we’re gonna spend an ENTIRE episode with generic travel sequences instead of learn about how different ‘Lyngarth’ is from my everyday life.” But it’s not!! It looks exactly the same as any other boring village! At least Mlp showed how Canterlot is an upstate, proper city that only rich, important ponies would be seen at; and Ponyville is a simple, but charming small town. And you can actually feel the struggle Twilight goes through as she tries to interact with others, but just doesn’t see the point of it. And I’m not trying to crap on anybody’s experience, but Rosemary doesn’t seem the LEAST bit affected by not knowing where her mom is; making her less relatable.
Can this really even be considered an opening to a Western cartoon, either..? If it is, then it's a terrible one at that. It's got nothing on stuff like the Ben 10 Classic opening theme song.

Worst part is: there are people on the HGS team who got promised they'd get to do their own stuff after this show was a hit. Well, it's obviously not a hit, so... where does that leave them?
Yeah, I was thinking that scene actually looked really pretty. Everything moved, there weren't random still things and random things that move too much, the lighting was nice and consistent, and it looked really crisp and sharp.
If they named it “High Guardian Herb” it would send the wrong signal. Thinking about it, a show about stoner magical girls would probably be much better.
@Anime Person all of them. The entire show has a severe case of "cocaine addict syndrome" where they charecters look like their soul left their body and they just give off a blank, brainless smile
The biggest problem with the show is half the time it's trying to be a kids show, half the time it's trying to be an edgy teen show. This sounds like something from my little pony Edit: because a lot of people have replied about it, I actually really like MLP! I'm not criticising MLP in any way. What I mean by this comment is that the tone of it is similar to MLP because it feels like it was aimed at children, which is weird because the actual show isn't supposed to be for children. Anyways my point is that it feels like they couldn't decide on a target audience. Hope this helped :)
A mark of failure is having two separate identities that never meet. You can be cute fun and dark at the same time. It's just how can you balance it or ease the viewers into it
God even My Little Pony has higher quality writing and music than this. Like the message of friendship and dreams coming true is the same throughout, but MLP actually worked to make the lyrics flow and their songs are all bangers. This Day Aria is one of the best villain songs in anything ever, Play Your Part, A True True Friend, everything from Equestria girls, *all bangers.* on the other hand I can’t even hear what the singer is saying in this, the lyrics that I do hear are so bland and generically strung together, and it sounds like one of those cheesy 1990s and early 2000s kid cartoons that aired solely to promote toys. I’m sorry for ranting lol but hot damn this whole show is a mess.
@@caralenalindberg6098 Ah a man (or woman)of culture I see, yes without a doubt. Most of everything Equestria Girls pulled out in music, were certified BOPS! Run to break free, Let it rain and The Other Side are at the top for me cause DAMN ARE THEY GOOD.
I really feel that if this show was marketed as a kids cartoon series instead of a mature anime it would have been at least received a little better... because frankly the show kinda falls short for an adult targeted show, but for a kid oriented audience, well this something I wouldn’t mind watching while babysitting my niece, but for me, well I’m waiting for an abridged version.
@@finger5600 Only because of some swear words or some shit like that. But I agree, this feels like a Saturday morning cartoon instead of something you'd see marketed towards adults.
It's really obvious they've watched A LOT of anime openings and basically tried to copy what they saw without understanding the principals behind each shot.
also i am not sure about what their target national audience is but if I'm asuming that it's America. This theme wouldn't work, and even the lyrics in Animes' opening tends to relate to the show (Jojo for example). What I'm saying is that opening themes should be a pitch to the audience, tells them a brief summary of what they are watching, and needs to be catchy, it's supposed to be the show's identity. 4kids did it right with pokemon, kirby, and even Yugioh (especially Yugioh GX, in my opinion). kirby is interesting with their opening and it shows how different our cultures are. North America took a more upbeat action tone as well as a clever bit "need a monster to clobber that there kirby" while the original Japanese took a nursery approach, both still telling us that we are watching and episodic adventures of kirby.
0:55 to 1:04 is probably the only good part since it actually takes advantage of the music. The music has this sudden tonal change (I don’t know how else to describe it) and the visuals actually match it. With the animation and the flower petals. Plus the lighting and colors. Lighting really can set a scene
Im really late, but this might be related to a "Bridge" in a song. It's famiys for being that littke connection between the start up of the song, then that satisfying beat drop. I have barely any knowledge of music theory but hope this helps!
nah, it even still seems like a children's series, immature jokes, an unnecessary explanation about transsexuality, if you take away the blood and the adult jokes it could easily be in CN.
At 0:56 i find it so funny that this scene is trying to be emotional, then it shows Rosemary’s face and it literally just looks like she’s daydreaming LMAO
Actually that part does make sense; what you do is that you is that you get really wet, than you put gel in it, and take a blow dryer to it and than you have poofy hair. It's a good way to do a Pompadour.
Dude I expected her to have 4c hair with how poofy her pigtails are. But then it goes completely straight when it’s down. Where did all of that volume come from in her pigtails??

I love the sequence where they introduce the other two members of the main group, then some secondary characters, then just individual teachers. Then they run out of characters and copypaste a bunch of background assets so they’re all stepping on each other. Then they muddy the composition by putting the secondary characters on top of *that* for a second introduction, giving them more focus than the other two main characters. This is like if The Owl House’s opening had entire shots dedicated to Principal Bump, Mattholomule, and Boscha.
I swear this 0:41 and this 0:45 character is straight up copied from the Owl House and nobody can convince me otherwise. Also the body shapes and sizes, it's all so The Owl house
@@toiletvision6138 that does not invalidate any criticism of the animation specifically, or the show in general really. That fact only explains the state of the show, not justifying it.
1:10 This scene feels so unsatisfactory, Rose raises that sword like she is about to do something epic and looking at her serious face you would think she will have a big fight, but then she smiles with the others and pose like they're taking of group photo, where is the fight?
Did the he-man pose and everything.... then held the sword wrong while generic elf held the bow and arrow completely wrong too. I will never be okay with that.
@@zuri6744 I wouldn't compare a medicore, bland, professionally-made 2000s kids show with oddly charming character designs to whatever this glorious abomination with a misleadingly okayish artstyle is. Shoot, you know what? Go look up the Strawberry Shortcake intro. That alone had more competency and effort put into it than the entirety of HSG. Don't get me wrong, worse shows than HSG do exist (think of stuff like Dorbees and Butt Ugly Martians)... but I'm not completely sure if there's a less cohesive one. I should probably mention that I watched Strawberry Shortcake as a kid, but that doesn't stop me from acknowledging how boring the most of plots are.
I like how Crunchyroll put so much money and "effort" into this over about 3 years, meanwhile smaller animation companies (Vivienne Madrano's thing, forgot the name, for example) make cartoons that are better animated, written, voice acted, and produced, with episodes coming out in the span of a few months
Helluva Boss? Yeah, you're right. It has some flaws but it's pretty cool. And HGS was actually finished in 2019, they just had it sitting around until they decided to finally relase it...
Helluva Boss definitely is better written and what you said, but the problem is with the overuse of swearing. But tbh it's definitely entertaining and actually watchable, HGS is watchable too ig but it's so over the top generic
Remember, this is supposed to be a mature "anime" yet it has an opening that looks like a low budget lazy copied pretty cure op. And comparing them is like an insult to PC, which I like a bunch.
There really is no comparison once you take into account the fact that Pretty Cure us marketed towards small children and yet somehow manages to be better than this. By like a lot. In literally everything. Characters songs and all. God bless Precure man it’s the perfect palette cleanser after this.
"This is the opening" "Oh, the animation is kinda bad, the actual show's animation will be better right?" ... "THE ACTUAL SHOW'S ANIMATION WILL BE BETTER RIGHT!?"
I don't think so ,she pulled the blanket and then as the transition was going to end it cut to her wearing her gloves so in my opinion it wasn't smooth
High Guardian Spice OP has such masterful lyrics, such as "All of our dreams will soon come true, if we only try." It's almost like the songwriters DIDN'T try. Amazing.
It's amazing that you were able to make that out, I couldn't hear a goddamn word in the song and I've had an easier time understanding the English lyrics in a Japanese anime OP.
@@mirsolis4992 It feels like Ghost Stories intentionally. Like the animators were told to make something that looks like a story, and the voice actors to just ad lib everything. XD
Opening summed up: -Wow we are all happy in this amazing world -look all our diverse characters -Now sad emotional moment -Villian? -Friendship is the strongest magic
Me too, I want to make mine an actual anime. I don’t think that’ll be possible though since I don’t live in Japan. I hope one day I can move to Japan for a bit of time so I can understand more about the culture and what to add into my series, and maybe find a way to produce it
Ok so my question is... what is the singer saying? Like Ariana Grande’s singing is more understandable than this. I only hear “all of out dreams will still come true if only we tryyyy” and “high GUARDIAAAAAN”
I looked it up! ✨All of our dreams will soon come true, If we only try. All of our hopes come shining through, Just look into my eyes. Hard to fathom all the ways We will rise to save it all No guardian will fall. Fly true, become the light As we honour what's warm and bright. (Become the light) Together we'll win this fight. The journey and the lore, High Guardians To our core!✨ Don't know if you still need it, but here.
the main problem that I can see is that it’s so stiff. When they do that one cliche anime everyone’s gliding across the screen type thing, the transitions between each character is acceptable but they have no fluidity. It’s just arm bent and then straight without the gradual movement from bent to straight (for example). We see this again when the characters are running, or in most movements of a character’s body. It’s very obvious that the animators of this series do not understand how to take advantage of the fact that High Guardian Spice is 2D animated. Animators add fluidity to their characters, they bend the rules slightly of what the human body can do. They may exaggerate facial expressions, or change the way a limb moves compared to the rest of the body. This is seen several times in disney/pixar movies, they know how to make their characters not look like dolls moving on a screen. It’s severely lacking in this entire series, but it’s very noticeable in the intro specifically.
I’ll be honest. In my opinion, the theme song wasn’t particularly “bad”. But, it does sound like something that’d be moreso targeted at an 8 year old, which... Clearly isn’t the case with this show- I kid you not, when I first saw this show, the art style, the coloring... I THOUGHT THIS WAS A SHOW FOR KIDS AGES 7-12 OR SOMETHING. Not saying that you can’t have an art style similar to this, targeted for more mature audiences - but *COME ON!*
I think even if you were 12 you'd come to dislike the characters very much off putting that every other character is gay aswell, not in a homophobic way, but more in a "What's this guys character then? He's lgbtq" as if that's a character trait

@Δt0mix man basically just because it’s animation doesn’t mean it’s an anime Anime is basically an animated show from Japan while cartoons is mostly from the west
This show actually does have some redeeming qualities. Not many, but some. There are a few background characters that are generally pretty interesting and/or endearing. But oh boy is it not enough
There is one high quality here in his, it's the ending and I'm not talking about the ending no no no, I'm talking about a black screen and has better qualities than this.
I wanna be honest, this honestly had A LOT of potential, I really like the character designs and I really like the art style, If only they had worked on character personalities and plot then maybe this would have been a really decent story, too bad it didn't turn out this way
The only problem I have with the artstyle and chracter design is that it feels more like a cartoon than an anime, and the chracters seem like elementary schoolers or background chracters.

It makes me think that they killed the trio & went back to their city that is literally stuck in the 1900s compared to the rest of the world, even freakin' Cambodia).
I think the show is fine, I'm actually currently watching it and it's not the best thing I've seen, but I think putting aside all hate viewing and outside drama or whatever this show would've been a least well-liked by a ton of people. I think the worse thing I've seen so far is the pacing of the scene can be weird like when they meet those two girls at the train station and they don't get a proper introduction like at all and the beginning scene before they pan out to the family members of the girls feels a bit clunky because of it's pacing. Dialogue is meh too but that is definitely due to the pacing since characters don't have enough time at certain points to actually say things that feel complete. I think the best dialogue and scene for me so far is when they encounter the dwarf chauffeur, That dude's delivery is pretty great. voice acting is pretty alright sometimes and pretty good others, again the pacing at times is what I think is really preventing the show from being higher than a 6/10 just based on what I've watched. But yeah, this show is pretty alright. Sorry I just wrote this random-ass review, but I got really annoyed by just negativity, especially from people who probably just watched only clips online without forming their own opinion, and I just chose your comment to express that. The show isn't perfect, but it's fine, no need to rip it to shreds. That just my opinion on it tho.
I thought an animated shows intro was supposed to be well animated. ...well, I guess they're lowering the expectations for their viewers right away. Good for them

Im not a musical expert but id say this would be a fairly average theme, if the vocals and instrumentals weren't competing with each other. This song seems equivalent to trying to sing over a guitar solo. The parts that would sound nice are muddled so bad because the vocals are trying to sing over instrumentals that i think would be better for a break in vocals.
@@brainrich1358 I don't even think it's the song writers fault, I think it's whomever was in charge of sound mixing. I've heard the complaint that sound mixing is a consistant problem through the series, with background music sometimes drowning out dialouge scenes. They must've had the same sound mixer(whatever title that person might have) for the opening theme and the background music. I'm not sure exactly if it's common place for the song writers or the sound directors to edit the opennings, as i know very little of sound design(They are defintly the unsung heroes of any visual medium such as movies, shows and video games) but i assume they didn't have anyone familiar with sound mixing or maybe they did, but they didn't have the manpower to implement it well. I will also add a tangent, and say this kind of fuck up is rare as far as im aware(When it comes to opennings). Opennings are the front covers of anime and if there were was any place to showcase your team's talent it would be here. That or have another studio do the openning. Even the english version of Wakfu which has terrible sound mixing(More so then high guardian spice if you can believe that) didn't make this mistake when making an english version of the openning. P.S anyone reading this comment should watch wakfu, it's just the current english version is uniquely terrible and i only suggest the orginal french dub with subtitles unless you want to laugh.
@@rorrim0 As a musician I can tell you that the audio mixing is *atrocious* by any professional standard... but you don’t need to be a musician or producer to be able to tell that. With how consistently unbalanced it consistently is throughout the series, you're probably right about it being one person. At least I *hope* it's one person because if it’s a full team then that’s beyond embarrassing. Based on my unprofessional observation, this mix sounds very tinny, way too much treble and mids. Also, I don't know if I'm imagining it but is there something weird going on with the audio panning? Or is it just a complete lack of it? Either way it's weirdly disorienting to listen to with headphones. The composition itself is... eh. It’s not terrible but it has no direction, you can’t exactly call it good. Anyways, going to good music now to get this out of my head.

It looks like a child cartoon trying to emulate a mix between tangeled the series with a mixof barbie with none of the heart nor passion that made those series memorable, then procced to market it for adults.
The animation is simple, lacks fluidity and for being an op it has to be your best effort since it is your introduction to it, this feels like a project done by a newbie, as a single guy/girl, not a team, in animation over 2 months. Best part of this is 0:56, i actually felt something, and the timing with the music is well here. But the animator gave up after this since 1:06 is the most robotic and lackluster scene with 0:24 coming close to how lifeless that scene feels, the adults there don't even acknowledge the girl presence. Song overall is a mix of generic fantasy world with bits of trying for a feel like steven universe cartoon. The theme also seems to try for a mix of different things that actually pains me. Feels like this project was done with "what we believe is popular" in mind, without diving too much into those reference materials, i would be actually surprised if there is a script to this thing. Feels more like a wing it project. In short, this would have been received better, as a youtube project, than a "crunchyroll" anime.
That end part killed me- the rising feeling in the song kinda hit a wall since all Rosemary did was take the sword out of the sheath and wave it forward

The biggest problem with the show is half the time it's trying to be a kids show, half the time it's trying to be an edgy teen show. This sounds like something from my little pony
Edit: because a lot of people have replied about it, I actually really like MLP!
Ik the theme song is so mlp but its also all edgy teen stuff its doesny make scence.
A mark of failure is having two separate identities that never meet. You can be cute fun and dark at the same time. It's just how can you balance it or ease the viewers into it
at least my little pony was successful 🏌️🏌️
I’m sorry for ranting lol but hot damn this whole show is a mess.

yea, it feels like they mashed all of them into one, resulting this
They tried to copy shera but ended up making rose-shit look dumb
also i am not sure about what their target national audience is but if I'm asuming that it's America.
Nah the animation is just pure garbage and ugly, a lot of anime OPs are trash too

i can understand jason derulo's songs better than this
the main problem that I can see is that it’s so stiff.
Clearly isn’t the case with this show-

This feels like something I'd need to make for a Music assignment if the brief was "Generic Kid's Show"
Then the teacher would give you a low grade because the shocking twist is that it isn't a kids show or at least aimed for kids 🤦
@@inky5574 And you would just nod and say to the teacher, "I know right?".
If it were me doing that assignment, I would make something sort of like this:
ruclips.net/video/9gpu1GHRymY/видео.html
every fucking shit is generic here
0:45 Those are some nice roses.
0:32 the dragon. The dragon doesn’t have animation. It’s just slides slowly to the left
Hahahahaha I never noticed that 😂😂😂😂
It looks like a Getty image.
LMAO BEST PART
Weird part-
Why dont they just have a loop of animation instead if that 🤣🤣🤣
It's just a sliding png 😂
I think I’ll stick with Amphibia, Owl House and Steven Universe.
Atleast they have good characters and semi interesting plot
Even Lego Elfs is better than this lmao
Bruh Minimighty kids is better than this shit, go watch it, highly underrated kids series.
Inside Job?
Or Akazukin ChaCha if you want to go obscure.
Or Space Cats if you want to go even MORE obscure(I mean, seriously, the colors of the heads of the main trio from SC are the same colors that the main trio in HGS have on their hair. It makes me think that they killed the trio & went back to their city that is literally stuck in the 1900s compared to the rest of the world, even freakin' Cambodia).
This looks worse than anything 4kids could produce.
Have some respect for 4kids
4Kids brought us TMNT 2003 so I wouldn’t say 4Kids makes bad stuff ;3
At least 4kids didn't butcher and bastardize their licensed anime to make a political statement.
@@Sato_Goth That's true.
4Kids' original content that's not dubbed anime is actually pretty good.
All things considered; That drop at 0:38 Is fucking amazing.
Yeah, it’s the only part I actually like
Why does this whole show feel like an anime parody that would air on Adult Swim but with none of the ironic self-awareness
because it is? I mean, this was done by some American studio filled with activists
That would’ve been better 100%
@@KappaRipple This show sucks imo
adult swim isnt any better, they only made a hand ful of decent things
I thought an animated shows intro was supposed to be well animated.
...well, I guess they're lowering the expectations for their viewers right away. Good for them
At least the opening Is animated... Kinda ... Show bad
It's also supposed to be a representation of the series they handled that well
This is like one of those episodes in modern cartoons that imitate anime for comedy, but this is a real thing.
Fruits Basket lyrics: Even though today is hurtful and the scars of yesterday remain, I want to believe that I can free my heart and go on
High Guardian Spice lyrics: aLl oFf OuR dReAmS wIlL sOoN cOmE tRuE iF wE oNlY tRy
The scene at 0:56 has better animation than the entire series what
they used up all their budget for it
And yet they loop the same leaf animation and chop it incorrectly so for a spilt second they dispear and appear slightly farther back… twice
Bruh, even the plot of the lego movie takes things more seriously than I ever will take this show
Comparing the Lego movie to this is like comparing a nobel peace prize winner to Hitler 💀.
Even before this piece of shit was made, I adored the Lego Movie. I watched it all the time when it came out
TMW Wakfu can anime better than Crunchyroll
EDIT: I am not implying Wakfu is a bad show (I frickin love it!) But what I AM saying is that a series with a lower budget going for it's own sudo anime style looks a hell of a lot better than this.
Now NOW NOW Wakfu is done by people who love their craft or professional enough to make a very nice show. And make a nice good story.
(To me it's awesome show Period but I be professional and admit it can be better but still ITS WAY MORE AWESOME THEN THIS.)
TFW the ota-Chan show is better
Oh man, don’t compare wakfu to this.....
We dont compare gems to charcoal.
Wakfu is made by actual talented people, ofc its better
From informations I have got in HGS fandom, here are the Japanese VA for each character
Rosemary: Chinatsu Akasaki (Miwa from JJK)
Sage: Ai Nonaka (Kyoko from Madoka Magica)
Thyme: Sayuri Yahagi (Haruna Sairenji from To Love-ru)
Parsely: Hitomi Nabatame (Chomusuke from Konosuba)
Amaryllis: Ryoka Yuzuki (Satsuki Kiryuin from Kill la Kill)
Snapdragon: Miyuki Sawashiro (Daki from KNY) imho i feel bad for her Japanese VA
Lavender/Rosemary's Mom: Shiori Izawa (Nanachi from Abyss)
Aloe: Satomi Sato (Ritsu from K-ON)
There's a Japanese dub for this??
Honestly I feel bad for the VAs for having to waste their time on this show
I hope Miyuki Sawashiro at least got paid enough
Fucking KYOKO FROM MADOKA??? WHAT-
Wait-
THEY DRAGGED KYOKOS VOICE ACTOR INTO THIS SHOW!?
**Singing some sort of lyrics with music blaring**
Me: *WHAAAT?*
That's just a problem with the transfer to RUclips. The actual cartoon on Crunchyroll has the sound mixed fine.
thousands of people are probably going to watch this show clip by clip on this channel
Only way to tolerate it
So true imo

0:56 i love how the wind completely changes directions in the next scene. gotta love those continuity errors.
I bet it's mostly a green screen effect and they forgot to mirror it
She was looking at her first, and then she turned around.
They were probably too lazy to change it
Honestly, if they just stuck with calling it a children's cartoon, this wouldn't flop as hard.
But ya gotta bait the anime fans, right?
Im not a musical expert but id say this would be a fairly average theme, if the vocals and instrumentals weren't competing with each other.
This song seems equivalent to trying to sing over a guitar solo. The parts that would sound nice are muddled so bad because the vocals are trying to sing over instrumentals that i think would be better for a break in vocals.
It feels almost like everyone was afraid to say something out of fear of hurting the songwriters feelings
0:54 This part is stylish
@@larana2 That's probably just a problem with the transfer to RUclips. The actual anime on Crunchyroll sounds like it's mixed fine.
You know your opening is bad when majority of the people would rather listen to the 4Kids Dub Openings.
Kirby Right Back At Ya's ENG opening is honestly catchy af, though.
@@k.h.8506 Oh yeah definitely there were some really catchy 4Kids Dub Openings like Kirby Right Back at Y'all, Yu-Gi-Oh, Sonic X, etc... And that's keeping in mind that they were trying to censor them to be westernized
Chaotic's theme is awesome. Maybe it's because there's no lyrics and it's only music? I don't know.
@@TheAnimeGamerDude Sonic X was really catchy to me, really hyped up the show
Not fair
Yknow 4kids be boppin with the music
When 0:05 has better angle and quality then the entire show
It always cracks me up at how the instrumental and the backup vocals are soo much louder than the main vocal to the point you cant even identify the lyrics
Even King of the Hill's opening is more anime than this shit.
Don't go down that rabbithole as Japanese veiwers of King of the Hill are disgusting Subs versus Dubs to this very day.
1:08 put this at 0.25x speed and tell me how she literally just didnt break her arms while sheathing that damned sword
It looks like a child cartoon trying to emulate a mix between tangeled the series with a mixof barbie with none of the heart nor passion that made those series memorable, then procced to market it for adults.
i love how everyone completely shits on this. every single video has barely any praise. it’s amazing 😭😭
Again, I’m sorry to Barbie and MLP, but it seems like this show has taken inspiration from those shows
except those show had talented people make them
