- I set myself a task: could I build an ash longbow within a day?
USA Merch teespring.com/stores/lone-arc...
UK Merch teespring.com/stores/lone-arc...
I think that, at the zenith of warbow and longbow manufacture in the 14th and 15th centuries, bowyers must have made bows in less than a day - driven as they were by the very same forces that drive manufacturers today. Time is money, then as now, and goods have to be made within price and to a fixed standard. So making a bow in a day was - in my opinion - routine all those years ago. The question for me was: could I make a bow in a day? I work with hand tools in the autumn woods and make a simple ash longbow with a draw weight of 40+ lbs and all done within five hours. It's a simple bow, but it works. Hopefully encouragement to all beginner bowyers that a bow can be made by someone new to bow making and can - if wished - be done quite rapidly.
Thank you for watching.

this man deserves a show on discovery or history channel, this video is so well presented
Thank you very much Ognjen! Appreciate you watching. Mick
Mick Grewcock mick i have a question for you, since its really hard to find ash staves here where i live, would an ash beam or board be good to make a bow?
You could make a bow from from a beam or board, though I have never done so personally. It's important that the grain lies correctly along the length of the wood. Check on the internet; I am sure there are instructionals on building a board bow. When I was stuck, I bought a pre-tapered try-laminate stave which I tillered - it's a good way to learn about tillering and you get a bow quickly. It's not the same as a self bow but I made two that way and still have them - one is 40lbs and the other nearly 90lbs. Mick
Mick Grewcock thank you mick! i'll be sure to subscribe to your channel
Agree!
Your are so very calm and friendly! You create such an amazing atmosphere. Love this
Hi Oliver. Glad you enjoyed (though I'm not always calm and friendly!! LoL). Appreciate taking time tom comment. Atb, Mick
That's what people who are calm and friendly always say.... Haha. Love the videos.
Glad you like the vids - but don't underestimate the calm and friendly amongst us!! 😉
I've thought the same thing :3
@Oliver - Excellent comment . True wisdom is calm and friendly . Be blessed .
I wish my dog was that well behaved. He'd have nicked those sausages before they were cooked!
My two no better
Good boys love snausages
I'm almost sure that some 600 years ago your ancestor was an archery instructor for English soldiers XD.Thanks for sharing the knowledge
Glad you enjoyed. Stay well. Mick
Your accent and calm demeanor reminds me of a younger David Attenborough. Have you ever tried making a bow out of hornbeam/ironwood? Not sure if it grows in your part of the world...
Thank you very much Michael, that's a kind comment! Appreciate you watching. Hornbeam grows in the UK, though not commonly in my area (Midlands). So I've never made a bow from that wood nor heard of one. Thanks for watching. Atb, Mick
Mick Grewcock what other tools did you use besides the machete
He used a spokeshave, rasp file and cabinet scraper. hope that helps.
Sorry, missed that question to me: thanks for answering. Mick
Hornbeem make a great longbow

"What about them sausages, Charlie?"

I have always wanted to make my own longbow. This ancient skill was taught from father to son, it is just one of so many traditional skills that have been lost. This channel is a great resource to learn how to get started.
Done it yet?
you make one yet?
You basically covered about six old-school Boy Scout merit badges in one day....5/5.
Hearing you talk is like listening to a letcture from paradise
Lockevich That’s a nice comment: thank you 🙏

Hi Jim - thank you for watching and commenting. Yes, I did the whole lot - bow making, filming and editing - in a day (13 hours in fact). Thanks again and all the best to you all. Mick
That's a very patient dog that you have there. 🤗🤗🤗
Thanks Mr. Mick. I just made my first Bow in the Woods just outside my House. It's not perfect but I am very proud of myself. Greetings from Germany.
You sound so calm and describe everything so clearly and this was a great video
Nicely done, Sir. The feel of how you work is good energy. Your nicely mannered pup has the same feel, too . . . good energy.
One more time, great video, Mick. I not only enjoyed seeing you succeeding in your bow crafting, but also appreciated the video shooting and making. Very peaceful moment. Thank you for this.

+Akunimanos Channel Thank you very much, glad you enjoyed! Mick
I am an archer and occasional longbowman. I heard a story of a guy who turned up at Kinver for a field shoot where many folk used longbows but there were other categories. When he arrived having thought that there was no room for him so he`d brought no kit, he was informed that if he wanted to he could shoot, so he cut himself a hazel switch and in short order a very poor bow resulted. He borrowed some arrows for the day from a friend. AND HE DIN`T COME LAST!!!
Love your videos Mick!! So glad to have gentlemen suck as yourself putting out things like this for all the young beginners to watch and learn.
Hello Colin, thank you - very pleased that you enjoy my videos. I do hope to show that anyone with a few tools, a bit of wood and some effort can begin to make simple - maybe not good, maybe little more than passable - bows and begin an exploration of this heritage loaded craft. To be honest, every one of my bows has faults but it's the learning that counts for me and if I can nudge others to try then it's worth it! Than you for watching and commenting. Atb, Mick
First..thanks..
Second...beatiful video
Third...beatiful woods
Fourth...compliments...you know Exatly what you're doing
I just found this video after spending 6 hours splitting an 8 foot stretch of oak trunk down to quarters and dragging them up to my house. A first for me. This is a very relaxing way to end the day. Soothing for a sore back. I intend to make a longbow, which will be another first for me. I think I'll buy a cabinet scraper. I also have a rasp, a hatchet, a plane and a bushcraft knife. Any advice you could offer for working with oak would be greatly appreciated. Once again, lovely video.
I've wanted to make a longbow for years, now I feel more inspired to do so
Good luck!
@@MickGrewcock Thanks. Are yew and ash the best kind of wood? Or what other woods would you recommend that grow on the eastern coast of the US?
Osage orange is a great bow wood. On the other coast Pacific yew is highly thought of.
What a beautyful and chilling video! Thanks 😀
Awesome! Thanks for posting 👍
Mick, your videos are so fun to watch. There's somthing very calm in it. Good work my friend.
Hi there, thanks for that - glad you enjoy the videos and I really appreciate you letting me know. Makes me want to make more! Atb, Mick
Video makes me hopefull, thank you
Set on the bow is unreal, but really nice work on making it out in the woods!!!
I have watched a few of your videos, and I am very impressed! I want to make my own bow for a long, long time now. During this quarantine I have tried making two from some scrap planks I had laying around and they broke. I have harvested an oak sapling and can't wait to get back to my shed to start working on my bow! Thanks for your videos!
Good luck - I wish you well!
subscribed and liked, finally minutes not wasted on youtube : ) I am a modern bow archer of my school team and always loved old-fashioned bows, as they are much more natural and beautiful, learning to make one myself
Hi Tin! Glad you enjoyed - I appreciate you commenting and liking, thank you very much. Good luck with making your bow(s). More bow videos and other stuff on the way. Thanks again and I hope your studies go well. Atb, Mick
You are very friendly! I feel very welcome and calm listening to you. Thank you for this awesome clip! I'm making my second bow. This time it's going to be a longbow instead of my first shortbow.
Glad you enjoyed. Good luck with your bow! Mick
I love the quality of your videos. Thanks for making
Thanks for these videos! They're inspiring me take the steps to make my own longbow and crossbow.
Hi Steve - perfect, that is my aim: to try to encourage people to have a go. Because, if I can do it - I'm sure you can too! Good luck with whatever you make and thank you very much for getting in touch and letting me know. Atb, Mick
Very well paced & easy to follow along with, your voice is so calming & nice to listen to

♥️ wonderful people. Thank you very much. Love from Greece.
I'm a bit late but what a brilliant video, nice, slow and calm explaining, very friendly air and you just did a splendid work with both the bow and video. Nice little mate you've got there :)
This is so great.. The video was presented.. The bow was great .. The edit and camera work made the video more enjoyable
Loved the video. Keep it up!
Love the videos. I’ve been a traditional bow hunter for nearly forty years now (even managed to kill a few deer). I’m a Michigan hillbilly with several acres of woods and lots of time on my hands now that the coronavirus has put so many of us out of work. Looks like I need to make a longbow. Thank you for a little inspiration.
Very nice bow! Thank you for sharing.
Very informative and quite relaxing to watch. Great video, keep going!
Thank you Lazar, delighted you enjoyed. Atb, Mick
Fantastic video. Many thanks Mick.
Motivated by your videos i am making my own ash longbow.
I hope it works!
Good luck Jasper, I hope you get a bow first time. But if not, don't give up, have another go! Atb, Mick
Thanks for your reply! Maybe you could make a video how to make a bow string?
Hello Jasper, thanks for the idea - I will do that! Keep watching my channel. Atb, Mick
Hi Jasper, your video now on my channel! Atb, Mick
+Mick Grewcook i just finished making a simpler bow to my younger sister. I didn´t think about wich kind of three i where using as she is very young and won´t be able to draw heavy weights. I would like to make one for myself and i wounder if i could use any other trees than Ash, thanks in forehand //Martin

I think your shows are great keep them coming.
Thank you 🙏
Absolutely fantastic! Thanks so much.
So heartwarming and well made video
Hi Mick! Thanks for sharing this mellow and informative video! I made my first two bows today, for my children! They're basically sticks with string but as much as four year olds need! Anyway I got thinking that I'd like to try properly and make one for myself, hence looking you up on RUclips. Even my starting point today was very satisfying so I want to continue. No shortage of trees here in Switzerland so hopefully I'll find something suitable. Thanks again!
Good luck - seems like you might be hooked already! Mick
Realy nice video, dude :)
