  • £80/100$ bowyer. Become a Bowyer for less than £80/$100! My Bow Making Tool Kit. I've been asked what tools, aids and workspace I use to make my longbows. I show you the tools I currently use and how I started bow making for less than £80 / $100.
    My initial bow making tool kit was similar to this. This is enough to make a finished longbow.
    FOLDING SAW WOLVERINE HIGHLANDER £9
    MACHETTE COLD STEEL PANGA XX £20
    WOOD FLAT RASP 8" BACHO £12
    CABINET SCRAPER KUNZ £6
    TILE SAW GENERIC £9
    SECOND USER DRAW KNIFE EBAY £20
    Of course I have added many more tools and aids in the 18 months that I've been bow making - and I now have some covered workspace in which to work - but I want aspiring bowyers to know that it isn't expensive to build a tool kit that will get a beginner started.
    I now also use a Gerber Bear Grylls Machette/Parang, Wickes tile and wood saw, Kendo rasps, Garlick Cabinet scrapers, a block plane, Silverline bench 6" & 8" woodworking vices, Silverline 200lbs hanging heavy duty scale, Mora splitting knife, spoke shave, Hitachi power drill and various items such as rulers, pencils and other aids found around the home.
    Much of my kit and materials are readily available on eBay, Amazon and local DIY outlets.
    Thank you for watching. Comments, likes, suggestions and subscriptions all very welcome.
    Self-filmed with a Panasonic GH4 + Lumix 14-140mm lens, GoPro Hero 3 and DJI Mavic Pro aerial camera drone. Edited with iMovie.

    Quick tip. Spine of the saw can be used as a scraper. Also saw can be salvaged to cut out a scraper in desired shape, then sharpened to a square edge. The scraper also can be fashioned in to a wooden frame with handles to give more sraping power and comfort.

    After one of your videos the other day I went out to my garage and got three bows down from storage above the ceiling joists which I made twenty years ago.

    Excellent and informative as ever Mick. I've acquired some wide diameter bamboo which is ideal to back some of my ash bows. Also, I'm experimenting making bamboo self-bows. Bamboo is easy to work with but provides unique challenges. I think my self bamboo bow will take some work and may not be conventional or pretty. However, it will be some fun and allow me to chill out on my own, as usual. Keep up the good work, MIck- I always enjoy your enterprises.

      Mick Grewcock, Thank YOU!
      Since childhood I have wanted to make my own bow. I practised archery as a kid and was obsessed with Robin Hood and all things Medieval. I remember my dad and I at some point went to the woods to find a big branch of a yew (called a taks tree, from the Latin, in my native Denmark) from which to make me a long bow, like Robin Hood’s. But although my father is a fourth generation cabinet maker by training, we were unsure on how to go about making a long bow.
      I since worked many years as a lumber jack, but eventually became a classical guitarist by profession and a lutenist of sorts. Unusual background, I know.
      I kicked my television out many years ago, and I watch instead wood working videos by Paul Sellers and bow and archery craft with you and select others when ever I have the time and need.
      I thank you for bringing all of these disparate but somehow connected interests of mine together by teaching us the seemingly forgotten skills of yet another of mankind’s inventions. I’ve had my goal set at times variously on instrument and furniture making, but I am convinced that bow making might become my spare time enterprise of choice.
      I must also further compliment you on, A) being a top-level presenter, comparable to the very best, without exception, and B) having a superbly brilliant dog!
      (An aside, is that a Coventry accent, by any chance?)

    • @MickGrewcock
      @MickGrewcock  6 лет назад +1

      Wow! You have a great story to tell. I am honoured to share my little stories with viewers who are able to take something from them. I am no more than a novice at making bows but if I inspire others to start practising this wonderful and ancient craft then I feel successful. Thank you for taking time to send me a message that is so uplifting - youtube is not always a place to feel good but stories and feedback such as you've given me makes it all worthwhile. And you have placed my accent almost perfectly! I grew up just 15 miles from Coventry. Good luck on your bow making journey and thanks again .Mick

      Mick Grewcock Thanks so much for your reply, Mick. I signed up for your blog and now follow you also on Facebook. I myself took a break from posting on social media which has lasted well over a year. But your videos put me in a good place so thank you again!
      I lived for some years in London, where I studied guitar at the Royal Academy. I since moved to New York, where I have lived and worked as a music college professor for nearly 30 years.
      In the summer (and sometimes during the semester) I work at Palisades Park right across the Hudson River. I love the outdoors!
      I fondly remember my years in England, and I am pleased that I seem to have retained my ear for English accents ;)

    The thing you called a "vernier gauge" is a "dial caliper". The difference is how the measurement is displayed. A vernier scale is mechanically simpler, and therefore more durable, than a dial gauge.

    Nice video Mick, but almost any three of the tools you mention will set me back $100 in US. Yes it's possible to pick up deals on Ebay, but my Ebay experience has not been completely pleasant. It's possible to go much more minimalist. I use mostly a draw knife, a sureform rasp, flat rasp, cabinet scraper, rat-tail file and sand paper. If someone goes the power tool route a simple hand planer and a orbital sander will work for shaping bows once you have the bark off.

    • @MickGrewcock

      Hi there, that's really useful information for my US viewers - thank you very much Of course everyone has a different take on best bow making kit, I just tried to show people how I got started. Appreciate your input. Sad that tools are seemingly so expensive in the US - in the UK tool prices have plummeted over the years (largely due to China). When I tooled up for my first job (electronics) some 40 years ago, tools were wickedly expensive; now we can get power and hand tools for a song - though of course premium brands and very specialist stuff can be more expensive. Thanks again for watching and commenting. Mick

      You can get a good draw knife for about $30 and Stanley makes a descent spokeshave for less than $15

    I'm looking to add a spoke shave to my kit, but never having used one I'd love your input on what kind to get. Mainly, the difference between a flat base or round base. I can't tell what yours is, I'm guessing flat.
    Loving the videos btw, they're keeping my courage up on my first attempt.

      +Steve Long Hi Steve, mine is about the cheapest you can get - about £6 UK - which I bought on eBay. It's a flat one. Delighted you enjoy my vids - and go for that first bow!!

    • @rodparsons521
      @rodparsons521 7 лет назад

      If the only pronounced concave shaping on the bow you might find yourself doing is in the fades on a raised handle flatbow (which you can easily do with a big half-round file) you are unlikely to need a round sole and a flat soled spoke shave is sufficient.
      I reckon Mick was maybe just lucky with that cheap blue Chinese imitation of a proper Stanley spokeshave. :-)

    • @stlong001
      @stlong001 7 лет назад

      Rod Parsons thanks for more insight. I did get a cheap one that I've been practicing with on some truly awful pine 2x2's from a box store I'm using to make poles for a tarp cover for my workspace. It's very hard to get the blade properly positioned, but it's still serviceable until I can find quality tools.

    • @MickGrewcock
      @MickGrewcock  7 лет назад +1

      +Rod Parsons Yes it's a cheap one but not hard to 'tune up'. For less than £6, it does a great job!

    • @rodparsons521
      @rodparsons521 7 лет назад

      I've seen a few of those Chinese Stanley 151's and some need rather more than "a little tuning up". A Clifton might be a better choice but I'd rather drop the whole budget on a Lie Nielsen. Now if only they made a spokeshave scraper with a blade like the L- N 212B small scraper plane.
      i guess cheap ones are useful while you sort out your tool preferences.

    Great guide Mick, I feel like this video is gonna be popular :D
    btw is there a specific place to get cabinet scrapers? Or are they just one of those things you can sometimes stumble across on Ebay for example?

    • @MickGrewcock
      @MickGrewcock  7 лет назад

      Hi there. Cabinet scrapers should be available from specialist woodworking suppliers but I sourced mine on ebay (UK). They are available new either individually, a brand called Kunz for just a few UK£ each - but I bought a set of 4 made by a company called Garlick and again via eBay. But you can replicate one with just a piece of flat steel (maybe 1/16") and along one edge work a file so that there is a burr along the edge. Draw the steel toward you along the wood with the burr on the leading edge (toward you). Hey presto, a cabinet scraper. A knife will do the same job if blade is held vertically, though you don't a burr on it. Hope that helps. Mick

  • @Vellikos

    I wish you had made this video earlier! I think I've spent more than this on tools and still don't have tools for removing a lot of wood quickly (i.e. a cabinet scraper, draw knife, or machete/axe).
    Do you have any recommendations when it comes to second hand draw knife brands? A lot of what I've seen on Ebay hasn't been very good; many of the draw knives I've seen have been practically worn down to the nub, and didn't have nearly as much metal left on the blade as yours. Perhaps you might have recommendations on search terms other than just "draw knife"?

    • @MickGrewcock
      @MickGrewcock  7 лет назад +1

      Hi there, yes there can be many different sorts of draw knife and there are many brands. I cannot say which brand is best as my experience is limited. What I can say is that thick bladed draw knife that I show is nowhere near as good as the thin bladed one I borrowed once from a friend. That was virtually bendy and made a stunning job; mine is crude and takes off massive slices - not something I always want. I am always on the lookout for them locally, just in case I find a lightly bladed knife with a slight curve (downwards). I prefer older, used knives that have been kept in good order or have been refurbished/sharpened. So I can only say that my heavy and thick bladed knife is not ideal for the work I do - but it is useful. I would use a thinner bladed knife a lot more if I had one! Sorry I can't help more, the ideal is a range of draw knives I guess. Mick

    • @Vellikos
      @Vellikos 7 лет назад

      Thanks for the advice! I'll be sure to keep an eye out for local sales. I think there might even be a local forum for the town I'm in that I might be able to ask around in. I was also wondering if, perhaps, you had a go-to resource (video, webpage, etc.) for sharpening/burnishing a cabinet scraper? I was thinking about looking into that as well, since I don't currently have the space (or living situation) for a vice (and bench) to hold my bow in order to use a draw knife.

  • @ryansy7060

    You don't need all those tools,actually. I made my first bow with an itak ( Philippine machete), a saw, a rasp, a piece of scrap metal as a scraper, and some sandpaper. plus vegetable oil to finish. Those were hard times :)

    Also, just a tip, consider trying out an OKC Kukri Knife from Amazon made of 1095 Carbon Steel when harvesting bow making supplies from the bush/woods (1064206 Ontario Knife Co OKC Kukri Knife www.amazon.com/dp/B00519UT42/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_OfTjAbS1WN2D6). It's smaller than a traditional, machete-style Kukri (giving you more room to swing the blade in the bush/woods without hitting other trees/limbs around you). Also, a quick way to keep it sharp while you're on the go is a Corona Sharpener which always you to shape any cutting blade free handed without breaking the bank and small enough to fit in your wallet (Corona AC 8300 Sharpening Tool www.amazon.com/dp/B000BPASBK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_PkTjAbPFT8GKC).

    Love the content but it not possible for an American to to make a bow with 100 bucks a knife of a machete is about 40 for a knife 30 for the machete then you need a file that’s 25 to 30 bucks the hand saw is another 20 bucks then the tiller knife if if you sue what you already paid for you save. But. If not then that’s another 40 bucks sir this doesn’t work I found that I needed almost 300 bucks to start…also you need wax to wax the tips that’s not free you will need string for the bow that’s not free like man the more I think about it the more it’s not not close to 100

    Am I the only American that notices Brits like to jump "into" the camera field of view? Sometimes crouch and jump " into" center of camera field? Granted, this guy isn't bad as others, but he also talks slightly excessively with his hand to show weird emphasis at times that don't require it? I mean, I'm excited about tools... does he need to show everyone how to be excited about tools, like even 2nd graders changing channels or something (bad example) you get what I'm saying.
    Bows are amazing are inspiring by the way, just something that popped up in my mind, watching another British guy on tv or British guy imitating tv.
