Thank you for this video. I have a 2002 Boxster. Got my check engine light to go off with about 1 day labor and $100 worth of parts. Actually I burned a few extra hours determining why I didn't have power at the secondary air fan connection. Found the relay in the passenger side of the trunk which tested fine. I then realized after checking wire continuity between relay and harness is that there is a 40 amp fuse under the rear relay box that is for this secondary air fan. This fuse had blown. I knew the fuse didn't blow for no reason, so with your troubleshooting techniques, I did find a vacuum leak under the vacuum tank (broken plastic vacuum line.) This was not allowing the valve to open and allow the secondary air into the inlet manifold. Went ahead and replaced all vacuum lines, vacuum tank and switch as you recommended. Success!

One of the best DIY videos out there! incredibly detailed and accurate...many, many thanks! I'm in process of changing out all my secondary air components now. Broke those very brittle rigid plastic lines as well along with the metal air distribution housing when attempting to loosen the check valve. Ordered another directly from the dealer. Instead of trying to find those rigid plastic lines which will get brittle and break over time anyway, I went your route (vacuum tee splitter and 5/32" hose) from my local Autozone store. Also changed out the AOS since the intake manifold was already removed. Again, thanks for making this video...wouldn't be able to do this job without it!

Thank you for this; I just did this whole process too; the top valve and one way valve were bad; but replaced reservoir switch and some of the rubber joints. Both switch and reservoir tested ok; but like you said I was there and cheap to fix

I just want you to know that this is by far the best, most detailed, and most complete guide in diagnosing the SAI fault code. Awesome awesome awesome. Keep doing what you're doing and thank you for clearing all my doubts on how to find vacuum leaks and all the components that make up the emission system. Subscribed!

Excellent video. If you tried this procedure and still have problems, read on. In my case, 2002 986, the secondary air problem didn't result in an OBD code; rather the smog monitor for secondary air wouldn't clear, regardless of how many times I tried running the car through the drive cycle. All other monitors cleared and the car ran excellent, but couldn't pass SMOG until the SA monitor would clear. I paid a mechanic to pull the intake manifold and he checked the components as in your video and all checked out, but he went ahead and replaced the vacuum canister, the electrical vacuum cut over switch, the small check valve that plugs into the manifold, and several vacuum lines. Still, after many drive cycles and cold starts, the SA monitor would not clear. So, I took off the manifold myself, followed your procedures, and tested all components and all ok and still wouldn't clear. Fearing a clogged port, I removed the exhaust manifold, used a stiff wire to probe all the ports from underneath and all appeared to be relatively clean. Finally, I surrendered and took the car to our local Porsche dealer. For around $1200, they diagnosed and replaced 2 things: Air Oil Separator hoses (according to dealer, one had a slight crack that could result in a vacuum leak that could prevent the secondary air valve from getting switched), and an electrically controlled vacuum switch used to open the transmission coolant valve (also a potential vacuum leaker; however, car is warm when this switch engages and secondary air is on when car is cold so not sure this really was an issue). Anyway, after my 2 attempts and months of struggle, they fixed the issue; the SA monitor cleared, was then able to SMOG the vehicle, and then sell it (generally, a car has to pass smog in California within 90 days prior to sale). As I told the dealer all that had been done, they didn't pull the intake manifold and went directly to the repairs as described.

I also had a misfire on cylinder one when I put the and Jim back together. Turns out I did not connect the wire to the injector correctly so check those. Mark Salazar diagnostics has a good video on how to put it back together. Both of your videos were quite excellent. Thank you

Thanks so much for this. Without it I wouldn’t have been able to take on this project. I had three engine codes, two were the ones that you mention and show.
Few notes from my job. I first tried to do this by removing the alternator. I was unable to get my alternator off due to the rear stubborn bushing so off with the manifold I went. I think you get better access that way anyway but having access from the belt side proved helpful a few times. I have a 2001 S. It required a different part as two of the parts shown here seem to be combined on mine. Mine also had another vacuum line and switch not seen here that operated a baffle plate in a secondary manifold. I replaced those too. The other surprise for me was the metal tube connected to the air valve disconnected from the other side. I had to fish it to get the end back in place under the driver side manifold. I was able to figure out a visual angle through the manifold which allowed me to see if it was properly set saving me from having to pull the other manifold. Last surprise was my convertible top has a glass window which prevented me from gaining clear access to my engine. It doesn’t fold up like the plastic one but rather rests against the roll bar preventing direct access.
Only issue I found was the electric air vacuum switch was broken. It was always allowing vacuum on through. I replaced all the lines, connectors, and parts while in there anyway, even though all the other parts tested fine.
All said this took me around 12 hours and must have saved a small fortune in exchange.

Thank you so much! This is EXACTLY what I needed help with. Very detailed, same with the video about removing the intake manifold, which also helped a lot. My problem ended up being a snapped hose (the small, plastic line going from the vacuum reservoir to the switch with y joint hose in between). I'm still trying to figure out what the part number is lol.

Thanks, I had someone start the car and I disconnected the hose to see if the pump works and there was no pressure.
Try to disconnect the motor jiggle the wire and then started the car again and then started the pump.
I reset the engine light I'll see if it kicks the code again

Thank you for this video, something on mine is just starting to fail (I have the codes). The light will come on every other month or so, and then sometimes it'll go away without me clearing it so it's right on the edge. I'll definitely be tackling this soon now.

So the intake manifold HAS to be removed to replace the Cut-Off Valve?

Found my way to your video with P0491/492 codes. Checked the fan (which works) which oddly enough has a Mercedes part number. Car is a 2004 Special Edition which I bought with 11,000 miles13 years ago. Either there was an earlier problem with the SAI system or Porsche ran our of parts and called up Mercedes. Have you ever seen this before? How many hours did it take you to diagnose, and rebuild your system?

So first of all thanks for the videos. I’ve used this one repeatedly and the manifold removal to get to the guts. Once there my check valve was different. I have an 01 Boxter. Instead of the 2 valves mine is one complete unit. I’m having a hard time finding the replacement part 99611324901. I also had to remove the engine cover from behind the seats to get to that last manifold bolt. That wasn’t very clear in the video but I figured it out. Overall, 3hrs into it. Learned a lot about accessing the engine and now waiting to find a part. Thanks again. Also, my vehicle is really dirty and dusty in the engine compartment. Once it’s all put back together, do you think its find to rise it off or use some degreaser? Thanks

    • @howtohermione2
      @howtohermione2  6 лет назад

Did you watch my manifold removal video? I show how i got to that last bolt with the cover behind the seats removed. Although I don't show removing the cover, (there's already a ton of videos on that). But sorry if that wasn't clear. If you have trouble finding the part I would just get it from a dealer. I'm sure they can get it.
Yea I scrubbed mine down with a degreaser and then sprayed it with a hose. Just wait until you get it all back together obviously so you don't get water in the engine. I like to use this stuff called oil eater specifically for detailing engines. It works great and it's biodegradable

Awesome job!!! I may be digging into my 2003 S tomorrow to search for a vacuum leak(s) causing misfiring codes at idle after a couple minutes from a cold start. I was told by an expert that it may have to do with the air injector vacuum circuit. What model year is your car? and base or S?

Edit: it's also visible at 11:46
