  • I start by doing a watercolour warm up in my coil art journal , aka my Canson 98lb Mixed Media paper journal. I use my watercolours from Beam Paints, The Ocean Paper, and The Stoneground Paint Co.
We paint loose botanicals and shapes with our brushes to create a page for an under layer of a future painting or for collage or whatever you wish. Or you could just use this practice as art therapy, or a mindfulness exercise.
I recommend 90 or 98 lb paper if you hope to make collage papers by cutting around your shapes once they are dry as these are best for collage.
In this video, I also demonstrate how I create new colourful and textured collage papers by painting over unfinished work on paper. I use an old gift card for this, however, a piece of hard cardboard would work as well.
    Mention:
    Paper:
Canson XL mixed media coil book, 9x12"

    Round 12 Princeton watercolour brush

I really enjoyed this! That last green one looked like an Impressionistic painting. I could see a green rowboat in a pond surrounded by willow trees, hanging vines and flowers at 1:11. So pretty!

Thank you for a very enjoyable video. I loved everything you did in this video. I have ALOT of art I've done over the past few years that I could cheerfully paint over😂 thank you for all your demos and tips!

Just coming across this channel for the first time and I could just listen to you talk all day! This video is so soothing to watch and I love your monologue. This form of content feels so raw and authentic and I hope it never changes because I’ll definitely be following along from now on ❤
We all have our off days like you said in this video, but I hope it helps you feel better to know that your off day has made at least one person’s off day just that much better ✨

I so love your video's Allison. I saw these botanicals on your IG stories and hoped so much you would paint them someday in one of your video's and now you did. Thank you so much for all that you share with us so passionately, authentically.and generously. Your painting style, your thoughts, the materials you use, your resources, all the inspiration. It's so helpful for me.

I just started doing watercolors and maybe will add acrylics...my 1st passion. Can you do a beginner "video for dummies"? How do you take care of paints, leave them wet in a plastic palette or cover with plastic wrap? How do you actually use the 90 lb. paper adding collage and does the matte or gloss medium keep the watercolors from "blooming"? May be a 2 part video. Have been watching almost all your videos...soothing voice. I've gone back 10 months and still watching!!! Thank you :)

You can let your watercolors dry in a pan, which I suggest if you're new because you tend to use more watercolor paint than needed.
There are a lot of videos about blooming and why you would want to have them and when and how to not create them when you don't want to.

Hi again! Oh this is wonderful to hear. Great questions. I would recommend checking out a few other beginner watercolour videos on this platform as they would likely cover some of this information in more depth than I would do here. But I will definitely try to touch on some of these questions in future videos. Thanks for watching my videos.
