Thank you so much. Adding shadows was always my greatest frustration. Ruined so many paintings after working so hard on them. I tired your method and succeeded. Appreciate this so much.
I'm just starting painting and drawing and I'm not good at it but this channel has been so helpful i don't know what i would do without it, thank you so much! Just finished and shadows looks amazing now!
This is such a neat 'trick'. I've seen most paintings use glazing for shadows, but this works much better for me at my beginning stage. Thanks so much.
What a great tip! Thanks so much for sharing. Up to nowI‘ve always layered my colors until they looked „shadowy“ (or muddy, for that matter...). I‘ll definetyl try your method.
Such a lovely little tutorial :). Straight to the point, and very helpful! Thank you. Going to give this a try today, and check out some more of your videos.
I was searching youtube for info on choosing shadow colours in any medium. What a gem your video is(particularly being me being new to watercolour). Loved the “thirsty brush” term and using it for soft highlights is going to be really helpful. Thanks.
Another brilliant video! I've been struggling with using red/orange to shadow greens. This is what I'm going to do for a while until I get more advanced for most of my shading for awhile. I love the highlights tip too.
Use a quinacridone based red to darken greens - quinacridone red or magenta will work well. Cadmium or Pyrrole Reds will tend to turn brown or muddy. Perylene green is actually a black that is excellent and easy to use for dark greens - sold by Daniel Smith brand.
The easier and more fun watercolor is, the more you'll paint, and the better your art will turn out. That's why I love teaching - it's rewarding for me to see the results.
Thank you so much, im a complete newbie with watercolour and have found it very difficult to understand the placement of light and shadows. This is very helpful.
Thank YOU for posting! Shadows are confusing, each is individual and you have to spend time looking at it to see how the color and value change, but they can also be beautiful all by themselves.
Great way, what color can I use to make silver . like a needle , I'm painting a pin cushion , a spool of thread. and the needle thanks so much Deb. I love watching you paint. t
Thanks so much for this tip as I have struggled for years with shadows. I usually put the shadow on over the dry color and then I have a problem with the color lifting. I will try this technique it looks great. I did a painting where it was a stone house with a blue door and a there was a small shadow cast from a shrub that went across the stone color of the house onto the blue door. Would you use this same technique for going across two colors? Thanks so much for your great tutorials.
This was a revelation for me!! I just happened upon this, and have watched several more. These are great. My only ask is a little more info under “more”. What type of paper you’re using, mostly. Cold or hot press, weight. Thanks.
You are welcome! It may seem odd to paint something in black and white at first, but it's a very useful technique with realism. When you separate the color from the value, you only need to concentrate on one thing at a time and usually with better results.
hi great tutorial I was just wondering ..why you wet the whole pot..when you only paint the shadow area wet on wet ..then you let the whole painting dry ....so do you need to wet the area on the right ..thanks

You're welcome, Jan. It's heartwarming to hear that it helped. Thanks for posting.
Any color will work? I mean, if I paint the shadow blue then I put brown on top of that , it should work fine?
This was an "a-ha!" moment for me! Thank you so much for sharing this technique.🙋🏼♀️
Me too 👍🏻

You're welcome - thanks for commenting!
Thank you!!! I was stumped over this. Can’t wait to try it out
Have fun! This works well for fabric, too. Paint the shadows, then paint the color.
Brilliant !! Thank you for sharing... Love and Peace, Catherine

You bet, Dolores! I'm trying to post a lot of them.
I am just beginning and this was wonderful advice to help me!
It works especially well if you're painting fabric - paint the shadows first and put the color over top when dry.
Crikey! Why did I not know this? Thank you Deb.
Thank you! I love the way you teach!!
Thank you, Beth! That's so nice to hear!

You're very welcome. It helps you learn about values, also, which is extremely valuable with any kind of art.

Thanks a lot ❤ i was really struggling with shadows
Shadows can be difficult when you're dealing with color. Painting them with a neutral gray first makes it easier.
Oh! Thank you!! That sounds doable!!
It is, Mandy! I hope it helps!
My sentiments exactly Sharon! Thanks Deb for taking the guessing work out. I sure do appreciate it.
