You would need to do a multi-mold process involving casting your hand, sculpting a thin layer of clay over it, molding that, removing the clay, assembling the casting and outer mold, then pouring silicone in the gap between the two molds.
Say your model messes up and doesn't hold the desired pose? Can you reuse the first step or do you have to start all over again with brand new materials??
Awesome video. But I have a question I was interested in making a glove 🧤 from a hand sculpture I have . I want to make it wearable . This video doesn’t show that. I know I would have to cast it but I been scratching my head on how to make it into a glove. Can you guys point in the right direction. It would be so helpful. I want to make it latex. Which latex can I use??? I thank you guys in advance.
Question I have some scars on my skin that I want to stamp on to paper.. I can build layers with latex and peel off. But dont know how to tranfer on paper, any ideas?
How do I make both sides smooth so I can take the mold on and off? or is it just as simple to do smoother neater work? or If I flip it inside out will I not notice?
Wow, what a great tutorial! I was looking for something like that. I am a student from Germany and am planning to cast and mold two or three hands and about 10 cm from the forearm. But I have some questions: Can I cast two hands with one can? It is enough for more than one hand? What is this release agent "Body Release Cream" made of? Can I just use vaseline / petroleum jelly to separate skin and silicone? You would help me a lot if you could answer that.
The Release Cream is a special lanolin based cream. Vaseline is not as effective. Depending on the size of the hands, you may be able to make multiple molds.
It's possible, we have a reference for Body Double which should have similar results: www.smooth-on.com/page/body-double-silicone-visual-coverage-chart/
Would I be able to use ecoflex for the first layer and then a different (more cost effective) silicone for the rest of the layers? Also how many casts can you get out of a glove mould like this in plaster/wax?
I'd like to make a reusable mold of my hand/arm in a specific manner. Would I purchase all the materials here or should I get your alginate stuff instead?
Is it dangerous to cut or trim the silicon after it's set? Using scissors or a fine sandpaper to smooth out imperfections or remove extra tags? Would it be less skin-safe after that?
What can I use to make a not so flexible hand? Would this smooth cast 325 work? If not what can I use to make it firmer and less wobbly? I've been using Platsil 030 but its too giggly for my taste. I would like some resistance to it. Thank you in advance.
@smooth-on I am curious if this mold could be used for wax candle making? would it be too difficult to remove the glove without ruining the wax as it is fragile in comparison to the cast?
@Smooth-On How does this compare to dragon skin silicone in terms of "stretchy glove molds"? im molding a geometric object with many deep cuts. Previously attempted to use dragon skin with 3 layers and it could not stretch wide enough to invert though the deep cuts, was the application to thick or am I using the wrong product?
Darkbulb, this material is easier to stretch due to its softness, but the tear strength is slightly lower than the Dragon Skin. More more info, I'd recommend sending out tech team. Can you send us a tech ticket? Our team can help you - www.smooth-on.com/support/ticket/add/agree/
Thanks for the great video! I was wondering, would it be safe to use this silicone mold to cast an ice hand that would be used in a punch bowl? I was looking into foodgrade silicone however, it usually has a long set time and It doesn't seem skin safe. Thank you for your time.
This silicone has not been tested for food safety. We would recommend pouring a plaster cast into the mold, then remolding with one of our food safe silicones: www.smooth-on.com/product-line/smooth-sil/
Daniel Brydebell Just use a disposable non-powdered vinyl food-handling glove. Fill with water. Tie shut and freeze. When frozen carefully cut away the glove and throw away.

We wouldn’t recommend casting concrete in Ecoflex rubber due to the abrasive ness of the concrete. You will get a limited amount of castings. If you choose to try this, we would recommend Aquacon release agent.

Hello, Thank you for watching. The materials used in this video that has a mix ratio of 1A:1B by volume are EcoFlex™ 00-35 silicone rubber (www.smooth-on.com/products/ecoflex-00-35/) and Smooth-Cast™ 325 urethane casting resin (www.smooth-on.com/products/smooth-cast-325/).
+Sugar Note Alginate works great as well for hand casting. This method produces a re-usable mold. Alginate molds are generally one-time use only due to their moisture content and low tear strength.

You would need to do a multi-mold process involving casting your hand, sculpting a thin layer of clay over it, molding that, removing the clay, assembling the casting and outer mold, then pouring silicone in the gap between the two molds.
How much would all of these materials cost (approximately)?
Purchase price of a 1KG Ecoflex 00-xx is ~ $90 AUD; but much less than that is being used here, obviously
Good work

What all would you recommend I use if making a mold of my baby’s hands and feet that will be used to make a silicone replica?
Accu-Cast has a formula designed for casting baby hands. www.reynoldsam.com/product/babygel-2/
I read that the trial size for 00-35 is .91 kg. Would this be enough for an entire hand along with about 3 inches of arm?
It's possible, we have a reference for Body Double which should have similar results: www.smooth-on.com/page/body-double-silicone-visual-coverage-chart/
Would I be able to use ecoflex for the first layer and then a different (more cost effective) silicone for the rest of the layers? Also how many casts can you get out of a glove mould like this in plaster/wax?
Certainly, as long as it is another platinum silicone.
@@smoothon thank you! Would a tin based silicone cause trouble?
Hi, do the fingers move, and can i fill it with something so that I can use it to do nail training ?
You can use a flexible rubber in this mold - perhaps our Dragon Skin would be of interest - www.smooth-on.com/product-line/dragon-skin/
After making the mold, can it be held in different positions and then filled? For example if you wanted to do a peace sign?
No, because it would not register correctly in the bandage support shell.
No problem trimming to clean up imperfections but sandpaper is probably not going to be beneficial.
Hi, this is a very helpful video. Can I ask how much silicone did you use overall for this project? 1kg perhaps? Thanks
Ecoflex 00-35 has a specific volume of 26.0 cubic inch per pound. Based on our life casting chart you would need around 1 trial unit.
Yes, approximately 1 kg.
Can I use this for making bladder for composite application?
So you can use this for the silicone hand women been using for nails lol
Very nice, I have a silicone wig, but the color does not match my skin tone. what can I use to fix this problem. thanks in advance for your reply.
Thank you for watching. Can you please contact our technical support - www.smooth-on.com/support/ticket/add/agree/
Can this also be used as a casting material? If not, do you have a casting material with equivalent hardness?
Yes, you can use any of our Ecoflex silicones as a casting material as long as a proper release is used dependent on the type of mold.
What can I use to make a not so flexible hand? Would this smooth cast 325 work? If not what can I use to make it firmer and less wobbly? I've been using Platsil 030 but its too giggly for my taste. I would like some resistance to it. Thank you in advance.
Smooth-Cast 325 is a rigid resin, like a plastic. Perhaps a firmer silicone such as Dragon Skin 30 would work?
How would one go about painting the final product? Is there a type of paint that works well on silicone?
Can you send us a tech ticket? Our team can help you - www.smooth-on.com/support/ticket/add/agree/
@smooth-on I am curious if this mold could be used for wax candle making? would it be too difficult to remove the glove without ruining the wax as it is fragile in comparison to the cast?
It would depend on the strength of the wax. You may have to cut the mold to remove a fragile casting.
