Barely even noticed the extra time honestly as I really enjoyed the entire thing, time flies when you're having fun as they say. Thanks V ntn guy's🇺🇸. Oh I forgot to mention btw yeah, my Savage Axis in 3006, she's definitely a tight group'n tack drivin(in 30.06 perhaps more like 6 penny nail driver lol) sweetheart, & of course I've set my adjustable accutrigger trigger to about 2lb. Can't beat these imo for the $... Or more $ for that matter, chrome won't bring the meat home.

Best lower price point/ entry level price gun I ever shot was a Marlin xl7. This was long before $700 being budget. Not $700 but I grabbed a Winchester model 70 for $849 new on the shelf and have been extremely glad I did!

I don’t usually have a whole lot to say, but in this case I wanted to point out a few things. Not being critical of you guys, I think you do a great job and it’s tough when you have all that in front of you to cover, easy to miss little things. Here goes…
First, RIP Marlin X7 (XS7 and XL7) rifles. Worst thing Remington did to Marlin when they bought them out, so as to not compete with their own Remington branded budget rifle, which was worse. Maybe under Ruger’s leadership we could see a resurrection of the X7 rifles. I think there’s room…slot it in right in between the American and Hawkeye price points…so make it slightly nicer/more expensive than an American but less expensive than a Hawkeye.
Second, a Remington 783 does exist. New owner Rem Arms has started making 783’s again, both full-size and compact. So if you’re a fan you can once again own a 783.
On the Franchi I think you guys nailed it. The only things I would add are that it is a European rifle so length of pull is quite long at around 14” with no way to change it. The bolt gets more smooth once you clean the factory preservation oil or whatever off of it. The sling attachment points are kind of annoying. I had a Momentum Elite and the only sling I could get to attach and work correctly was a Limbsaver, which was ok, but is not my preferred style of sling. Also, the Elite has a detachable magazine but retains the hinge floorplate release, which is a little awkward. My magazine would not seat properly in mine if you were gentle with it, so a firm tap to insert was necessary. A little polishing around the edges by Franchi could take a really good rifle and make it hard to beat.
As far as the CVA Cascade, the only things you missed were that it comes with dual front sling studs…love that or hate it, as well as it has a very well done length of pull spacer. It’s an inch, so not as adjustable as the newer Savage 110’s, but it does adjust. They also have a slightly heavier barreled model now called the XT, which is fluted and comes with a brake. One notable thing from CVA…they’re supporting Illinois hunters and the silly single shot restriction that state places on hunters by offering a factory available single shot magazine for the 350 Legend and 450 Bushmaster Cascades.
The Mossberg Patriot and Savage Axis seem to not follow convention, I think because both of them existed before the trend really started with the 3-lug bolts. Mossberg didn’t change that much from the 4x4/ATR to make the Patriot. One thing to note on the Axis is, Savage is still making the Axis with the old style stock, in tandem with the new, better feeling and more ergonomic stock. Also, a regular Axis does not have an Accutrigger, you have to get the Axis II for it to have the Accutrigger. So be careful and do you homework if you’re thinking of buying a Savage Axis.
The Winchester XPR and Browning AB3 share a good bit, but there are some big differences. The AB3 trigger is basically a small, removable, plastic trigger. It’s hard to describe but look it up. The XPR uses a much more conventional trigger.
My biggest takeaway from most of these budget rifles is weight. They’re all kind of heavy. My father has a Browning AB3 and I’ve owned literally every other one on the table, as well as the Weatherby and Howa’s that were mentioned…and they’re all sort of heavy. Maybe not the Ruger American Compact, but that huge bolt makes it feel kind of off balance in hand. These “beefy” bolts could really be improved. I think of a Browning XBolt and it’s 3-lug bolt, which isn’t a fat bolt and it’s a much better and more refined design. I realize they’re not $700, but why can’t they reduce the material/size of these bolt bodies? I also think of Tikka and even though theirs is a 2-lug bolt, it has a 70° lift and is very trim. I realize Tikka is just over the $700 cutoff but I think you end up with a lot more for your money if you just spend a little more.
Now if you’re shopping Savage Axis (most basic, non-Accutrigger model) versus Tikka T3x, there’s a larger divide in cost. But if you’re at about the $700 mark for a rifle, throw $50 more at it and get the Tikka.

They way I remember it (which could be wrong) is that Remington facelifted the X7 into the 783, which then replaced their 710 (I'm not sure it was the 710; I seem to remember another Remington cheapie in the mix). So, the X7 is sorta still with us.

Weight is my focus on these too. I’ve had them all including tikka, xbolt speed, kimber, Remington 700. The Mossberg is 6.5 lbs and feels much more balanced and solid feeling to me than the ruger. Bought one after these findings and not disappointed.

    • @jmanswat2457
      @jmanswat2457 10 месяцев назад

I believe they had elaborated on the "fat" bolt supposedly being a design that utilizes the same bolt for most/all chamberings, requiring only a different head. It's clunky, but makes manufacturing that much cheaper.

    • @scotteger6271
      @scotteger6271 9 месяцев назад +1

@@funkla65 I have nothing against the 783 and hopefully RemArms can produce a better quality firearm with more consistent quality control. The only thing I dislike about the 783 is the cheap looking molded sling attachment points, but a $900 Henry Model X also has them, so there’s that.

A year ago, I did a bit of research into my first rifle and my budget was about $700. Total I wanted to spend with a scope setup was under 1K. For the features, price point, reviews and availability, I chose the CVA Cascade chambered in 6.5 CM ( I was also looking at the .308 but it was not available locally at the time). I got it on sale for $550 at Sportmans Warehouse and ended up putting a Diamondback Tactical 6x on it. After many months of range time and just having returned from a deer hunting trip with it, I can say that I am thoroughly happy with my choice. I don't think you can beat it for the price and I would recommend this rifle to anyone looking for a "budget" rifle.

The Bergara B14’s have crept up. They went from blued barrels to cerakote. The new models have a product code followed by the letter C, if you’re looking at them online. They’re like $750ish now for a B14 Hunter.
Ruger’s QC seems to be slipping lately. I used to have Americans and got out of them, but ended up with an American Predator that a friend won at a raffle…he wanted a silly low amount for it because he wasn’t interested. I was with him when he won it, picked it up and sold it to me cheap. That rifle shot terribly…couldn’t put 4 rounds in the rotary mag, otherwise it would sort of swell and wouldn’t feed. Even with 3 in the mag, often the rounds would fail to ramp into the chamber. You’d almost have to hand-feed the cartridges in or adjust them with your fingers for the bolt to pick them up right. With good factory ammo it was shooting well over an inch, like 1.5-1.75” no matter what I did. Sent it back to Ruger and they sent it back saying they did some stuff to it and a new magazine…to the range, same issues as before…gun went bye bye. Haven’t owned one since and likely won’t again.

A too quick on the trigger story. I had a 7 RM AB3 and really liked it. But as with most things I wanted to “modify” it and found almost no aftermarket support. At that time the aftermarket couldn’t put out enough stuff for the T/C Compass so I switched. I put in a $10 trigger spring off of ebay, a oversized bolt handle, and a tuner brake. The T/C consistently shoots right at 1/2 MOA and now T/C as a company is gone😢 And of course now I see aftermarket support for the AB3! I just hope the T/C finish stands up!

I just had an older Browning XBolt Stainless Stalker in 280 Rem that had rust on the barrel (minor) and a spot on the bolt. Some time and metal polish/rust remover and it looked pretty good. I use either Break Free CLP or Birchwood Casey Barricade on all of my rifles before and after a hunt. It’s just good practice. The best combination is a stainless receiver and barrel that is then cerakoted, because it’s stainless inside, which is far more overlooked than the exterior.

That gun is a heck of a shooter. He has gotten a bunch of hogs and several deer with it. I shot it and was getting .5" groups at 100yds. That was factory ammo as well. Savage really reduces the freebore. That helps make an accurate rifle with standard off the shelf ammo. Handloads only increase that accuracy.

And honestly, from many within the model 70 community… the new FN Model 70’s are probably some of the best that have ever been made, especially from a consistency standpoint. Also… made in CT… many of the different phases of quality of Model 70 were all built in CT, so that doesn’t in and of itself equal a high quality Model 70. For example, the Model 70 runs between 1964-1968 were probably the “cheapest” run/series of Model 70 and they were made in CT. The new model 70’s were a conscientious effort to really maximize the quality of the design and still remain consistent. Now can an argument be made that pre-64 or even pre-WWII supergrades have a special feel? Subjectively, yes. But the new made FN Model 70’s are definitely in the higher section of Model 70 runs. I have owned several Model 70’s across the different manufacturing periods and used them in both the US and Africa, and my experience just doesn’t align with your observation.

I own an XPR in 6.5 PRC and 223, a AB3 in a 6.5 creed., they both shoot great, I like the Browning better, the stock and magazine are more stout the trigger is more adjustable (on mine, down to 2 1/2 pounds. Otherwise they are very close. I have shot a Momentum and I have previously owned a savage access 2, The momentum was the least accurate out of them al,l but still, under one and a half inches and I only tried one type of ammo with it.

I have 2 patriot rifles 270 and 30-06 as well as a axis in 243. I have nothing to complain about. 😁

That new Remington 700 ADL is going to be a great gun with a Timney trigger and R5 rifling. I have seen one and they should make a great hunting rifle!

My only concern about that particular Timney is, what did they do to reduce the cost? Hopefully it’ll still have the same quality fit/finish/feel and reliability of known Timneys. Good on RemArms though for souring out a trigger manufacturer, if it helps them streamline production and make a good product overall.

Great show, weird thumbnail, but great show. I'd love to see you guys review the Stevens 334. You get a Turkish walnut stocked rifle for circa $400 depending on where you buy. It looks weird, but that's kind of why I like it.
ETA: Room temp yogurt?! This is why God won't let us have nice things anymore😆

The Stevens 334 was the Four Peaks imported ATA Turqua before Savage must have struck a deal with them to import under the Savage/Stevens name. Should be a good rifle, but 14” plus length of pull is kind of long for me.

Remington 700. My first rifle I bought myself brand new, 2006, was a Remington 700 30'06 for $350. It was very accurate. As accurate as my new now Ruger American 308.

I have my XPR Sporter chambered in 270 Winchester (classic 270) and I absolutley love it! Put a Vortex Diamondback Tactical 4-12 on it. Did my max point blank range at 27 yards with factory and my handloads and im dead on all the way out to 325 yards (yes I do my DOPE cards.)
Its shoots every brand ive put thru it with sub MOA using factory and Sub Half MOA with some of my handloads using SST and Accubonds along with Factory Core Lokt and Norma ammo at 100yards.

    The look on Mark's face.
Ryan M finds the answer for Jim, quickly, while Mark is hunting the website... On the computer...
Ryan quietly rattles off cartridge options, and Variant rifle options with other options for cartridge...
Mark sitting there beside the computer with a facial expression that could be captioned....
"closes computer screen, packs up, and walks out the door... Quote" not sure why I'm here. You obviously have this covered. "
    If we didn't know better.
    Great video team. Thank you.
    Watching through the end.

You don’t have a TC COMPASS 2 and the 783 Remington which was, well is a solid gun. The 16" threaded barrel outshot some of my high dollar rifles and so will my TC COMPASS 2 both the compact and the full length. Hell every single rifle y’all have on the table will shoot sub moa with the right ammo. My Walmart Weatherby in 30.06 or .270 is a beast of a rifle.
