    Nice tutorial video. Can this device be used to extend a WiFi network to a separate building that's on a different electrical system? The buildings are approximately 300feet away.

    • @mydoodads
      @mydoodads  6 лет назад +6

      Hi Tech,
      In theory, I think the answer is yes. I have this vague recollection of people complaining about other people being able to intercept data travelling over Powerline outside of a home. This was fixed by adding encryption on both the adapter and the extender.
      Also, if I remember correctly a Scottish power company ran a trial scheme running data over their power cables. However, the trial was abandoned because the data could be heard traveling through the cables.
      While Im no expert on electricity I am also wondering if the electrical technology between the two buildings and the road would stop the PowerLine signal from reaching its destination.
      An alternative option to Powerline might be a Wireless Mesh network but it will be more expensive.
      If you do try using Powerline technology to link the two buildings could you please let us know how you got on. Its a really interesting problem.

    Hi! Great video! Thanks for so detailed review! Just wanted to ask please if it is possible to connect these adapters to the splitter of electricity, so they will not occupy the plug? And if it is possible to connect 2 kits from one router, I mean that I will connect just one (the smaller adapter) to the router and will place the two others at different places at home. Will it work? Thanks!!!

    • @mydoodads
      @mydoodads  3 года назад

      I think that using a splitter will cause issues with your Powerline network. So a better option for you might be to get a kit that has passthrough built in. Perhaps something like the TL-WPA8630p kit?
      As to your other query. It is possible to connect multiple adapters to your electric mains.

    It did not work for my customer, I had him buy a TP link two unit model such as the one in this video.. after more than an hour trying to set-up at a distance with him on the phone I gave-up, it seem that power line models work on the same electrical circuit, but when on a different circuit it may not function, so it got returned to Amazon.
    I told my customer to go and buy the Netgear wall plug wifi mesh single extender that was in-stock at his local Staples store. It has worked perfectly, my customer has an IP phone that is far from the router and requires a wired connection. With the WPS setup I was able to guide him over the phone. Really great during Covid as he is 79.

    Great vid, but for models that do not have wireless access point (Ethernet only connections), is it possible to connect a wireless router to the other end to create a wireless access point?

    • @mydoodads
      @mydoodads  5 лет назад

      Yes, you can use a second wireless access point with any PowerLine extender that only has Network ports. However, the instructions would be a little different, as most of the configuration would be done on your second wireless access point. If I were in your situation. I probably would configure my second wireless access point to bridge mode and just replicate the SSID and password to my main wireless access point.
      Hope that helps

    Thank you for the video. I would like to improve wifi on an IP camera. What is better; to use the same SSID or a separate one. IP camera is not very intellegent (one of those KAMI basic cameras) with finding the stronest WIFI signal.
    So how would I know to which source would camera connect, as both router and extender will have the same SSID. And i would like for all to be connected to an extender. I am better to use separate SSID on extender?

    • @mydoodads
      @mydoodads  2 года назад +1

      For security reasons, it is now consider best practise to place IoT devices like camera's on their own unique SSID, on a wireless network isolated from your main network.
      Unfortunately, this sort of setup will require that you use something called a VLAN, which is not supported on an AC600.
      If you are considering upgrading your home network, more manufacturers are making routers that support multiple isolated wireless networks. For example a Unifi wifi system - ui.com/consoles or the new Synology RT6600ax - www.synology.com/en-uk/products/RT6600ax
      However, if these devices seem a bit expensive at the moment or you are happy with your current setup. A good alternative might be place your cameras on a Guest wifi network.
      This TP-line article explains how you enable a Guest network on a Powerline extender - www.tp-link.com/uk/support/faq/1098/
      As your Powerline extender will now have two SSIDs (your main one, and one called guest), by connecting your camera to the Guest wifi SSID. Your cameras will always use the Guest wifi network which also happens to be isolated from your main account.
      If you have, like in the video set the SSID on the Powerline extender to match your main wifi routers SSID. Then don't forget to enable Guest wifi on your main wifi router as well.
      Hope this helps to answer your query.

      @veryuniqezombi 2 года назад +1

      @@mydoodads Wow. Thank you for the prompt reply. In my parents house I have just used another router as an access point with different SSID. And that works.
      I am not very tech savy but will definitely look into your suggested settings for TL-WPA4220. Another query; what is the SSID and password on the back of the TL-WPA4220? Wouldn't that be by a default work as an isolated WIFI network when connected to the router via power line ?

    • @mydoodads
      @mydoodads  2 года назад

      @@veryuniqezombi As my instructions will unify the routers network and the power line adapters network into one. I thought it best to mention the Guest wifi option.
      However, you are correct in that the SSID and password on the back of the WPA4220 is the default wifi network created by the power line adapter. So in theory should also create an isolated network.
      I say in theory, because I'm wondering if it might be possible to access a device on the routers wifi network if both networks are on the similar subnet.

    • @veryuniqezombi
      @veryuniqezombi 2 года назад

      @@mydoodads Once again many thanks. I'll first try if default option works and if isolate itself from the router. Otherwise will setup the SSID for the gust network. You are a massive help. If I experience any further issues I might nudge you again. Fingers crossed that it won't be needed.

    • @mydoodads
      @mydoodads  4 года назад

      Hi Adam, good question and one I don't think anyone has asked this before.
      I usually start by testing which channels are the most used in my area. Then set both the router and tp link adapters to one of the primary channels that is being least used. For example 1, 6 or 11
      Then after the initial setup, I will spend a couple of days monitoring and testing the connections. Adjusting devices if I think I need to.

    Hi Mydoodads, thanks for the comprehensive setup tutorial. Could you please tell me what the purpose of having the UTP connected permanently to the router is (apposed to just repeating the wifi signal)? I'm thinking specifically in my case I have and ADSL router supplying the internet which feeds a Tomato/Shibby packet shaping router to which people connect via wifi. The wifi and LAN connections are served entirely different IP ranges and for security and routing they need to connect to the wifi. In the method you've shown, having the extender connected via UTP, would that mean people are being served the LAN or the Wifi IP? Many thanks.

    • @mydoodads
      @mydoodads  5 лет назад +2

      Hi JustifyJustin
      The process shown in the video, disables DHCP on the TP-Link PowerLine extender so that users receive an IP address from the routers DHCP. A network cable (UTP) is permanently connected to the router so that anyone connecting to the PowerLine Extenders wireless access point or its network ports, will not only be able to access the internet, but also access the LAN created by the router.
      Because of the way a WiFi repeater works, it will typically cut the speeds of a wireless network in half. This is because a WiFi repeater will have to create a backhaul to the wireless access point it is looking to extend. This backhaul is created by dividing half of the repeaters wireless signal, which creates slower data transfer speeds.
      The nodes in a wireless Mesh network, get around the problems experienced by wireless repeaters by using three wireless signals. Typically, a mesh node uses a 2.4Ghz, and a 5Ghz wireless signal to allow devices to connect wirelessly. Then it uses a second 5Ghz signal to create a backhaul to the Mesh networks primary node. The primary node is the device connected via a network cable to our broadband connection and is providing DHCP to our whole network.
      On a Powerline extender, as it is using the mains cables in a house to transfer data. The buildings electrical system is acting a the backhaul. This means that we get faster data transfer speeds than if we were to use a WiFi repeater.
      Hope this helps to answer your query.

    • @mydoodads
      @mydoodads  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Igor,
      Technically there is nothing wrong with using the same SSID on multiple wireless access points, as long as they are all part of the same Local Area Network (LAN). For example, you may have seen adverts for Wireless Mesh Networks such as Google WiFi or Linksys Velop. A mesh network is basically, just a series of wireless access points (or as you call them hotspots) linked together in the same LAN and all using the same SSID.
      While Mesh networks are seen as new technology, the underlying concept and principles that a mesh network implements is similar to that used to extend a wireless network using either a PowerLine WiFi extender or just a WiFi extender.
      The basic principles of WiFi, are that the closer you are to a wireless access point, the stronger the WiFi signal will be, which will give you a better WiFi connection, leading to faster data transfer speeds. However, as you move away from that access point, the signal will become weaker and the data transfer speeds will slow, until eventually you are no longer able to connect to the wireless access point.
      If you have a neighbour who also has a wireless access point, and that access point is transmitting on the same channel as yours. As you move towards your neighbours wireless access point, their signal will become stronger than the signal being transmitted by your wireless access point. This in turn will cause interference with your WiFi signal and could stop a device from connecting to your home network.
      So if you connect two wireless network points to the same LAN using the same SSID. By positioning those two wireless network points in places were their signals overlap. You can both extend the range of your wireless network, and reduce the interference from your neighbours wireless access point.
      This is because as you move away from one point, and towards another. As long as the SSID name and password match, a wireless device ie phone, will simply latch onto the SSID emitting the strongest WiFi signal. However, this jump between the two wireless access points will in no way cause a conflict between the router and the wireless hotspot.
      The only scenarios were I could imagine that you would create conflicts between a router and a wifi hotspot, is if you either have misconfigured the second wireless access point so that it is not acting as a bridge, or if you were to install and connect a second wireless router to your home network, but configure it in exactly the same way as your main router.
      Sorry for the long response, but I hope it provides some explanation.

      Q: Can TP-LINK powerline adapters work in different phases of three-phase circuit?
      A: Yes, but its rate will be affected when crossing the phases.

    Thanks for the video. However I am confused by the variety of options available. I am looking for a kit that will allow me to connect two wired-only devices (a smart TV and a PC) to my wi fi. I've been recommended to use the TP-Link TL-WPA4220T KIT; however there are various other TP-Link devices that seem to do a similar job and I'm not clear what's the difference and which one I should go for. Any advice appreciated.

    I have changed my router. I used to use the extender demonstrated here successfully in my garage with my old router. I can't recall exactly how I set the extender up originally but don't think it was as complex as in your video. Do I have to go through this whole process again because I have changed router? Before changing my router and speaking to my broadband provider on the phone, they suggested that just pressing the pair button on the adapter and extender unit should get me signal in my garage following a channel tweak on the old router to try and improve signal throughout the house. After pressing WPS on the router and eventually getting devices to work within the house, I pressed the pair button on the adapter, went to the garage and pressed pair on the extender and there was no signal. They then suggested changing to a spare router I had (a new unused one they had sent). I am tempted to revert to the old router as I don't think it has improved things signal wise and was not the cause of the problem. If I do so, will the extender pick up from where it left off if I just change back to the old channel on my original router? Incidentally I have noticed that the LED light on the extender is never solid but blinks quickly all the time (it may have been doing originally I'm not sure). I know this is very convoluted but would appreciate any advice. Thanks.

      Hi Charles
      Thats a lot of question.
      First I need to mention that, WPS is not secure. So on my network, all device that offer WPS as a feature have had WPS disabled. While this potentially can add complexity when configuring devices, from a security point of view, disabling WPS gives me some additional piece of mind. Also, by not using WPS I am forcing myself to understand better how the components of my home network actually interconnect and work together.
      As I ignore WPS as a method for setting up devices, the advice I'll offer here may be of limited use to you. This is because Im presuming that WPS is only offering a simplified method for issuing passwords, and is not auto configuring your PowerLine Adapter to your routers SSID. SSID is the broadcast name that your wireless router uses.
      If I were in your situation the way I would have connected your TP-Link PowerLine WiFi extender to your new wireless router. Is to change the SSID and password on your new router so that it matches the SSID and password you were using on your old router.
      Not only will this mean that you don't have to reconfigure the TP Link PowerLine adapter, you won't have to visit each wireless device in your home network and reset the SSID and password.
      As you mention in your query, it might be a good idea to reconnect your old router. See if your PowerLine extenders still works with the old router. Then, if they do. Reconnect the new router, and match the SSID and password to that of your old router.
      There should be no need to re-pair your Adapter and Extender. However, if you do rather than having both the Extender and the adapter so far way from each other. Try placing both devices in close proximity to each other. If possible like in my video. Now press the pair button and establish a connection between the PowerLine Extender and the adapter.
      Once you have a connection between the Extender and the Adapter, return the extender to the garage and see if you can re-establish a link. Remember, do not plug in either the PowerLine adapter or extender into an extension brick.
      If I remember correctly, by pressing the Pair button you are not factory resetting the PowerLine extender or adapter so it should retain its previous wireless settings.
      The indicator lights on the front of the Extender for the power light and the PowerLine connection lights should both be solid, while the WiFi light will be flashing.
      Hope this helps.

      @@mydoodads Thanks very much for your really helpful advice and time. I picked up on your point re the adapter location which had always been plugged into an extension brick. I plugged it into a wall socket, pressed the pair button, went to the garage, pressed the pair button on the extender not expecting any change, fired up the MacBook Air and the WiFi symbol on the Mac Book Air lit up straight away. I have internet now in there so that's great. It is confusing though as it it gives the name of the old router not the new one which is still operational (???). The new one isn't even listed as a Network to join on the MacBook when I am in the garage. Anyway I'm not bothered as long as I have reliable signal! Thanks again.

    Can this device work as an extender alone? To use only one of them and receive from the router and transmit as a wifi with no cables at all?

    • @mydoodads
      @mydoodads  3 года назад

      No, This type of extender is designed to allow data to travel through the power cables in your home so that you can create a wireless access point in a different location. Which is why you need two devices.
      However, while you can purchase devices that will just act as a WiFi extender, I find them to not work as well as a the power-line extenders.

      Yes your PowerLine adapters will need to be on the same power circuit.
      According to TP-Link - www.tp-link.com/uk/support/faq/406/
      Q3.5: Can Powerline adapters work if they are separated by different electric circuits?
      A: No. If they can pair in the same room, but the powerline LED turns off when you move one powerline device to another area, this usually means they are plugged into separate electrical circuits, preventing them from communicating. Please try different locations.

    Don't know whats going on here. The adapter and both extenders paired fine but when I tried to logon to the extenders to unify the networks, my mac rejected both passwords supplied with them! Now I cant see either of them in the Wifi list and neither of them show a wifi light. Cheap? maybe. Easy to install? If only!

      TP-Link warn against using a multi socket extension lead.

      Thx for replying.. in your opinion, which one better between wifi extender and wifi powerline ? I’m still confuse which one to buy.. my purpose is to maximize the wifi signal and the wifi download speed as faster as the main router.

    • @mydoodads
      @mydoodads  4 года назад

      @@vestax3 A WiFi extender will be your cheapest option. However, because of the way WiFi extenders work, while your signal strength will be better your data bandwidth will be cut in half.
      A Powerline WiFi Extender is a good mid-price option and because its data bandwidth is supplied by your power cables it will be faster than using a WiFi extender. However, PowerLine extenders can be susceptible to issues such as having a badly wired house or apartment.
      Another option that you might want to consider is installing a Mesh network. This type of wifi network is designed to provide good download speeds while also ensuring good wifi coverage.
      The only problem with Mesh networks are their cost. If you are interested I would suggest looking at either a Google WiFi or Linksys Velop. I personally found Google WiFi is the easier of the two to setup.
      If you are US based, also take a look at Amazon’s Eero. While I have not yet used one, I have heard people speak well of them and they are due to arrive in the UK and Europe in the Autumn of 2019.
      Hope this helps.

      Hi Haatib G
      The smaller one with a single ethernet port, is only used to get your broadband from your router to the electric circuit of your house. It is only the larger unit which acts as a wireless access point.
