Kinda cool now watching the snowflakes fall from our balcony at the margaritaville resort. Enjoying our 19th wedding anniversary thanks for giving us all the information we needed for a perfect trip. Other than the fact all the restaurants you recommended had to close for the weather which I understood but kinda sucked because I was looking forward to a good steak

Living in area for a long time now I've seen this happen a few times over the years in 2006/7 it was even worse the water was over the main and side roads. Water rushing thru the first floors of the hotels. You could see the water going right thru the bottom floors rooms the water was very high. even on the streets the water was deep. the mountains were so full of water it looked like the mountains were crying all over the mnts. Waterfalls where everywhere in places where there was no waterfalls before the flood. Even in Pigeon Forge the river come over the road.
In Gatlinburg at the aquarium people where trapped there, a helicopter had to evacuate the people out.
What happens is the river has a 90 degree turn near the aquarium. The water will rush thru so fast and hard that the turn cause the water to start backing up. It just flows to fast to make the 90 turn without causing a back flow. When the river rushes and get high it allows many down branches and trees to move down the river. the trees will get caught on turns and narrow areas. Especially at the 90° turn. The trees and debris makes natural Dams which cause the water to build up reaching record highs till it floods everything. Hopefully I explained this in a way its understandable. It's really hard to give a explanation but it's an amazing sight but scary and sad for the property owners stores restaurants motels devastated inside full of water mud and debris. I have to day before I had to evacuate I did a little drive into the mountains seeing the mountains with all those new waterfalls and looking like the mountains are sobbing was actually very pretty but you knew it wasn't going to be good. Prayers for my friends and neighbors...

We stayed in Gatlinburg a few year back and a hurricane came up the coast and inland. There was a creek that ran along the mountain road near our cabin. By the time we packed up and left the creek was raging and becoming a river. You would think that because your in the mountains it couldn't flood there but that's not at all the case. I love Gatlinburg and the people of Tennessee I hope they are all safe and don't lose anything from this storm. God bless you Tennessee ❤.

How much rain, in how short a time, did it take to raise the level of that river to that extreme?

Occasionally, it is TAUGHT. I traveled (my
job) thousands of miles each year. When
approaching accident scenes, I would park, grab the blanket, first aid kit, road
flares and walk/run toward the "problem".
      ....never away
