Beautiful Mauritius
I've visited Mauritius 3 times, stayed in Flic-en-Flac twice and Pereybere in Grand Baie. I agree that Grand Baie area is too touristy. For a small island, there are lots to see and do there. I've done most of the places in this video except hiking

Where did you find the quieter beaches ie which ones had quieter waves + less people?
Quiet beaches (people and waters) are around Riamdbel in the South and Anse la Raie in the North. We talked to locals to find them or came there by accident when we drove around and just stopped st beautiful places.

Regarding money.
I've found that MCB cash machines give a fantastic exchange rate, about as good as any BDC.
Local tip, if you want THE best exchange rate possible, but only for amounts of €500 and above, there is a BDC directly opposite the main entrance of the MCB headquarters in Port Louis (it's at the top of the steps across the street from the main MCB doors). They will beat ANY exchange rate I have ever found, anywhere. A good 5% more. But only for amounts of €500 and above.

The cost of living is far cheaper than La Reunion. The natural scenery may be more astonishing in La Reunion.
We have never been to La Reunion. But can imagine that it is beautiful.
