Haitian and Mauritian Creole have similarities and differences. We met a Haitian when I was in school in Mauritius and I was so excited that another country speak our Creole but when I spoke with a Haitian on another occasion over the internet.. We started arguing that the other was speaking Creole wrong ( we were kids at the time and didn't know any better). Last time I was in Miami with my family, the taxi driver was smiling when we were saying "how much should we tip?" in creole and turns out he was from Haiti and could understand most of the Mauritian Creole that we spoke. In the end, it's cool that the two Creoles can sound similar with some variances. I didn't know creole on Reunion Island was different until I heard them speak it too.

I worked there for 3 years, many years ago. Wish they'd said more about the admirably diverse economy and gone more into the (very hierarchical, very gossipy, very conservative) society, it's an interesting place in many ways. I did end up feeling kind of trapped - so much sugar cane, so many people squeezed into the rest of the space. I miss it though, wouldn't mind going back for a few months.
Strongly believe that it is where you worked or lived at that time. Also, the people around you. Happy to say that I live in a village where everyone mind their own business and no one is as you said "conservative". Cheers

The anecdote at the 3:33 mark is a commonly spread distortion of historic fact: According to the research of Dr. Kurt Barnes and Dr. Anneloes Smitman Phd (Maastricht), there is an important misunderstanding through manipulated and romanticised folklore. In 1850 (15 years after the abolition of slavery) the Marooners are reported to have been ‘hunted’ by the Franco-Mauritian estate owners and were offered a horrific "choice" of suicide by jumping or being torture to death. Hence, the historic mistruth is that after the declaration of the abolition of slavery, the British eventually climbed the Morne to inform the Marooners of their freedom, who assumed that they were being hunted and jumped to their deaths.
I notice you didn't show the poverty or the thousands of wild dogs roaming the island or the unbelievable corruption from the airport to the ice cream van, otherwise its very beautiful and the common people are lovely.
