At this point buy a b58, I think you will end up cheaper and more reliable standing at the same power, and still room for improvement. I think it would be interesting to see this on a 330e as it would have approx. 600hp after all of this.

Yeah depending on power goals it could be a hard decision. You can max out the stock turbo on the B58 with just a downpipe and have it be properly fast and around what this B48 build was at and you can push the B58 to well past 700 WHP but the costs go up quick on the B58 so just depends on if you just want speed for money the B48 wins and if you want down low torque nice sound more as a priority the B58 wins.
My current 2019 330i with down pipe BM3 already at 65k miles. Watching you done all this on the B48 is amazing. But my plan is once I hit 80k miles I think will do the same swap a B58 in. Can’t wait to see more content coming!💪🏼

@ Link has an ECU that runs a B58 stand alone now so it's definitely possible, runs the direct injectors, can add port injectors, runs both vanos's etc, never say never my friend anything is possible with today's tech.

I am thinking to swap it too, but not now, only in the future because i dont have any issues till now with the car. I have a 330i from 2019, with 320 hp(m-sport with M setup excluding pro pack and the seats which are not fully elec). it is still a great car, but knowing this is possible, i think ill do. Yeah what surprises me the most is the transmission carried right over, that is a big part of the puzzle, this car has every feature ever offered on a G20 but maybe in the future I'll pick up a more basic 330e an see about upgrading it.

I really want to see someone do this on a 2020+ Mini Clubman JCW with the B48A20T1 which is like 302hp/332tq stock. Mine is stock so far, but eventually this would be amazing and insane to have in a clubman.

Hey just a quick question regarding the transmission. If i plan to b58 swap my 330i, should i consider upgrading to the ZF8 71 variant or stick to the stock ZF8 51 one? Great to have u back!
I'm still running my stock transmission, we know they are good for about 600 wtq so the B58 doesn't strain it, the M340i comes with the 8hp51. I kept my stock torque converter which has more torque multiplication not sure if that'll change upper limits but if I did ever upgrade the turbo on this I'd look into a trans upgrade kit. For now I just want mid 500 WHP max.
Couple questions: can you recommend a high flow catted down pipe that would be able to handle the upgraded turbo. Next is the axles, what would you recommend for a 330i g20 that has x drive no m sport, stock.
I'm assuning the same could be done for 530 g30? Considering it's the same b48 as 330i. I like 330i but i love the drive of 5 series, curious if your build could be applied to g30.
I kind of miss it there as well. Loud BOV sounds right beside cops without a care, big open roads to stretch the cars legs. People driving aggressive so you feel justified with the money you spent to safely "merge" on the highway lol. To me a perfect 335i would be a coupe with this gen2 b58 swapped in with the N54 manual trans adapted to fit. Maybe one day.

Thanks again for sharing all of your knowledge. Wonderful stuff. I'm in the finishing stages of my build, and have been in touch with IPOS and Racebox. I have a first generation B46, which you and Navardi have noted have slightly less robust internals vs the G30. I keep going back and forth on doing PI and Motiv. I don't mind the additional cost, but worry about possible headaches with settings and maintenance. Ideally, I don't want to think about it after the tune is optimized. I suppose I can gain another 30hp or so with E85 (plan will be Flex Fuel). Is PI with Motiv pretty solid after things are set up properly, or are issues needing adjustments common? Thanks!
PI tends to help with cooling if you're running full E85. The pistons are not as strong on the gen 1 so anything that can be done to lower the chance of knock and help with combustion chamber temps will go a long way on it.
Hey @Vehicular DIY on the drivers seat for a 2024 G20 LCI, the dealer decided to open my thigh extender on seat and now when closed it’s crooked. I’ve tried opening and closing it and squeezing it tight and it will not align closed correctly to seat. Any advice? It’s a brand new car
It was less significant than I was expecting. Almost the same feeling besides taking a split second longer to feel composed again if you hit a bunch of uneven pavement.
Yeah I'm keeping it that way. With the 330i badge I found nobody really bothered me on the road, when I had my M340i people would want to play and with the G80 it got really annoying at times. Seems as though it wasn't the badge and more so the sound coming from the back as people tend to drive aggressive around this car now when they hear the engine.
Any suggestions on the best tune set up for locked ECU 2021 g30 B48 530e LCI? Since it’s hybrid, thought buying a piggy back (JB4) stage 2 or 3 would be more ideal & maybe installing just Intake, cat less downpipe & running e30? Since it’s Hybrid what would the HP number looks like?
We could easily see power go up with better exhaust systems 3.5 inch and adding methanol injection. And port fuel injection and upgrade the high pressure fuel pump and low pressure pump that b48 with that turbo could see near 600 at the wheels. A true monster when you factor the weight and torque and if it had AWD.
I have a Dec 2020 production 330e and seems like I have the b48 but my dme is locked. do you think there any other options other than swapping the dme to get more power out of it. 450 hp on my car would be amazing especially with the hybrid assist.
I would be curious to see what you could do with a B58 swapped into a 330e. I feel like you could top the 700 hp 1000 nm from the 2025 M5 but over 1000 lbs less.

What a great shame 4 cylinder Supra had no manual. It's lighter. It handles better. It's tunable with this same engine. Would've been perfect for weekend canyon runs.
First, just want to echo other comments and say thanks so much for the amazing content. I also have a 330i and have been considering the turbo upgrade for a long time. My question for you: is the tune necessary? I’d prefer not to send out my DME and instead just get the turbo, intake manifold, the downpipe, and charge pipe. Would you say this would still result in huge gains, or would it be futile and the tune is necessary for the car to take advantage of the new parts? Once again thanks so much!
@@VehicularDIY of course! And noted, my car is made after the 2020 cutoff but I’ll keep my options open. If I’m understanding correctly from your video, a tune/downpipe/turbo upgrade will bring it to about 360whp? That’s more than enough for me so if that’s a reasonable estimate I’ll definitely be going down that path in the future. Also curious what your thoughts are on transmission tunes like xHP and if you’ve ever considered them. Thanks again and have a good one!
@@chaosisback8950 I have a 2024 230i and with a jb4, aa catted downpipe and it pretty much turned it into a different car. I am considering xHP soon. I did a quick 0-60 run (can be seen in my videos) and got what looks like 4.5 seconds from 0-60. Keep in mind the 2-series is a bit lighter on its feet than the 330i. I have no clue what HP I'm looking at and frankly I don't care too much, but I do feel I shaved a second off my 0-60 and 50-100 which is amazing. You echoed my sentiments, after watching this video I was hoping I could go further without a tune. But, unfortunately, looks like that's impossible - you need Femto unlock and turbo upgrade, which for me is a bit too steep of an investment into this car.
@@vitaliyv5058Hey man, sorry for the late reply here I never get RUclips notifications. But those are impressive gains for just the piggyback and downpipe! I think I’ll be going with those mods as well, just looking for a little extra power and don’t want to invest $5k+. Have you ever considered some type of sprint booster? Performance gains are minimal on those but I heard they vastly improve the driving experience. I’ll probably be getting that done before everything else, but just thought I’d throw it out there in case it was something you’re interested in.
It is really, really important to note that EARLY 330i's (really all of F chassis and G chassis 5 series) that have the Gen 1 B46/48 will need pistons in order to reliably run this power level. Gen 1 has issues with the piston ringlands once you start pushing past 300ish horsepower.
@@VehicularDIY While this is true, I would hazard a guess that the majority of people aren't running ethanol. The reports about the Gen 1 B46/48 say 300-330 is where you start to push into ringland failure on 91/93. From what I've seen, the limit even with E85 is 24-25 psi of boost before they fail regardless.
@@Fat_Jag isn't this the limit for the high compression 20i engines? The lower compression 30i. Of course ringland issues are linked to LSPi at lower RPM but mapping is always over the whole range.
@@hansmaulwurf3831whether the car has the 11:1 or 10.2:1 Ratio pistons makes no difference in terms of the ringland failures on the Gen 1 motors. It was just a flawed design.

Loved your content, I still miss my 320i I had before I moved back to my home country, currently working to get another one. Would it be possible to femto unlock the dme on a new 330e and start the build from there and achieve similar power figures with the benefits of being hybrid?
I saw your video a little over a year ago. I bought everything you have and recommended but have a 22 530i. I have been waiting since then to be able to have a tuning platform that will support Motiv. Still waiting. I think cloning the DME will be my only option unless I want to continue to wait.
No. Only BootMod and MG Flasher support the B48s. I was incredibly impressed by what you did and was too quick to try and replicate it. I didn’t think about the FEMTO lock. But maybe I can clone mine like you mentioned? I hate that these parts have been just collecting dust. I even didn’t care about my car warranty I was so excited.
Yeah I mean MHD+ could easily support the platform if they wanted to and they already support partial femto unlocks and 2 way control with the port injection now. Yes you can clone your DME and then run ecutek on the clone.
Is it possible for you to share how I can clone my DME? Contact FEMTO? MG Flasher told me 4 months ago it would have Motiv support “soon.” ECUTek told me 3 times to get FEMTO MHD unlock which wasn’t supported. Then BM3. Then told me they don’t support BM3. LOL. So yeah it’s been a struggle.

be careful, the 120i from before 2018 uses the b48a which has weaker pistons and a different compression ratios - much higher risk at higher bhp

I had a B48E in a mini countryman JCW with ~400whp and it bent the rods, if you want to push it better get stronger rods.

BMW engine swaps have always been fairly easy compared to other manufacturers.
Yeah as complicated as they are getting on the computer side on the mechanical side they are very much like legos.

Yeah the same parts bolt up just might need to select gen 1 turbo depending on the model year.

Hey @Vehicular DIY on the drivers seat for a 2024 G20 LCI, the dealer decided to open my thigh extender on seat and now when closed it’s crooked. I’ve tried opening and closing it and squeezing it tight and it will not align closed correctly to seat. Any advice? It’s a brand new car
What is your opinion on the handling difference between the car loaded with the B46/48 and B58?
It was less significant than I was expecting. Almost the same feeling besides taking a split second longer to feel composed again if you hit a bunch of uneven pavement.

Yeah I'm keeping it that way. With the 330i badge I found nobody really bothered me on the road, when I had my M340i people would want to play and with the G80 it got really annoying at times. Seems as though it wasn't the badge and more so the sound coming from the back as people tend to drive aggressive around this car now when they hear the engine.

Any suggestions on the best tune set up for locked ECU 2021 g30 B48 530e LCI? Since it’s hybrid, thought buying a piggy back (JB4) stage 2 or 3 would be more ideal & maybe installing just Intake, cat less downpipe & running e30? Since it’s Hybrid what would the HP number looks like?

We could easily see power go up with better exhaust systems 3.5 inch and adding methanol injection. And port fuel injection and upgrade the high pressure fuel pump and low pressure pump that b48 with that turbo could see near 600 at the wheels. A true monster when you factor the weight and torque and if it had AWD.
Yes I think in theory up to 700 WHP is not out of the question with a full frame turbo given I made 582 WTQ. I would say 600 WHP could last.
I have a Dec 2020 production 330e and seems like I have the b48 but my dme is locked. do you think there any other options other than swapping the dme to get more power out of it. 450 hp on my car would be amazing especially with the hybrid assist.
I would be curious to see what you could do with a B58 swapped into a 330e. I feel like you could top the 700 hp 1000 nm from the 2025 M5 but over 1000 lbs less.
Hmm not sure about that, in theory it would bolt up but the DME wouldn't have a tune that would be applicable.
@VehicularDIY Probably a dumb question, but is it not possible to use the DME from like a 2019 X5 hybrid? Or use the tune from a 2019 X5 hybrid on a 2019 330e DME?
I just got a 2024 230i g42 would I be able to use this same setup , I only ask because when i go on the websites not many say 230i on the trim options, and its my first bmw so im still learning 😅
What a great shame 4 cylinder Supra had no manual. It's lighter. It handles better. It's tunable with this same engine. Would've been perfect for weekend canyon runs.
BTW a manual swap on a 2.0L could be easily done, the DME has provisions to allow for it.

If you can realistically afford a car with a b58, then yeah you might as well just do that.
First, just want to echo other comments and say thanks so much for the amazing content. I also have a 330i and have been considering the turbo upgrade for a long time. My question for you: is the tune necessary? I’d prefer not to send out my DME and instead just get the turbo, intake manifold, the downpipe, and charge pipe. Would you say this would still result in huge gains, or would it be futile and the tune is necessary for the car to take advantage of the new parts?

@@VehicularDIY of course! And noted, my car is made after the 2020 cutoff but I’ll keep my options open. If I’m understanding correctly from your video, a tune/downpipe/turbo upgrade will bring it to about 360whp? That’s more than enough for me so if that’s a reasonable estimate I’ll definitely be going down that path in the future. Also curious what your thoughts are on transmission tunes like xHP and if you’ve ever considered them.

@@chaosisback8950 I have a 2024 230i and with a jb4, aa catted downpipe and it pretty much turned it into a different car. I am considering xHP soon. I did a quick 0-60 run (can be seen in my videos) and got what looks like 4.5 seconds from 0-60. Keep in mind the 2-series is a bit lighter on its feet than the 330i. I have no clue what HP I'm looking at and frankly I don't care too much, but I do feel I shaved a second off my 0-60 and 50-100 which is amazing. You echoed my sentiments, after watching this video I was hoping I could go further without a tune. But, unfortunately, looks like that's impossible - you need Femto unlock and turbo upgrade, which for me is a bit too steep of an investment into this car.
@@vitaliyv5058Hey man, sorry for the late reply here I never get RUclips notifications. But those are impressive gains for just the piggyback and downpipe! I think I’ll be going with those mods as well, just looking for a little extra power and don’t want to invest $5k+. Have you ever considered some type of sprint booster? Performance gains are minimal on those but I heard they vastly improve the driving experience. I’ll probably be getting that done before everything else, but just thought I’d throw it out there in case it was something you’re interested in.
@ I never thought of that . I think at this point a xhp tune and lighter wheels would help. That would help more than anything I think.
For all this just get a 340i this build seems like you gotta have some deep pockets which in turn is all for a 330i but nonetheless still pretty cool
It is really, really important to note that EARLY 330i's (really all of F chassis and G chassis 5 series) that have the Gen 1 B46/48 will need pistons in order to reliably run this power level. Gen 1 has issues with the piston ringlands once you start pushing past 300ish horsepower.
I'd say more like 400 whp if you run a good amount of ethanol.
@@VehicularDIY While this is true, I would hazard a guess that the majority of people aren't running ethanol. The reports about the Gen 1 B46/48 say 300-330 is where you start to push into ringland failure on 91/93. From what I've seen, the limit even with E85 is 24-25 psi of boost before they fail regardless.
@@Fat_Jag isn't this the limit for the high compression 20i engines? The lower compression 30i. Of course ringland issues are linked to LSPi at lower RPM but mapping is always over the whole range.
@@hansmaulwurf3831whether the car has the 11:1 or 10.2:1 Ratio pistons makes no difference in terms of the ringland failures on the Gen 1 motors. It was just a flawed design.
@@Fat_Jag Nah. I'm on E85 pushing 32 psi and have been doing so for a few months now. I'd say the 91/93 limit is 25 psi safely.

330e is available in f chassis. Im not sure about the G chassis in USA.
hi im from ireland and just got the f30 330e and going down the same road as you did just for 400 or sountil i get a b58 down the line also too as i have a claim coming in so will have the money then
also in ireland the 330e got thid b48 from 2016 onward
Loved your content, I still miss my 320i I had before I moved back to my home country, currently working to get another one. Would it be possible to femto unlock the dme on a new 330e and start the build from there and achieve similar power figures with the benefits of being hybrid?
Yes it is definitely possible specially with the B engine. You would make more power because of the hybrid motor.
So I am assuming the xdrive 330i would be even more insane off the line. Sheesh.

I saw your video a little over a year ago. I bought everything you have and recommended but have a 22 530i. I have been waiting since then to be able to have a tuning platform that will support Motiv. Still waiting. I think cloning the DME will be my only option unless I want to continue to wait.
Yeah hard to say if other platforms with do this but I'd say there is at least the chance with MHD+
No. Only BootMod and MG Flasher support the B48s. I was incredibly impressed by what you did and was too quick to try and replicate it. I didn’t think about the FEMTO lock. But maybe I can clone mine like you mentioned? I hate that these parts have been just collecting dust. I even didn’t care about my car warranty I was so excited.
Yeah I mean MHD+ could easily support the platform if they wanted to and they already support partial femto unlocks and 2 way control with the port injection now. Yes you can clone your DME and then run ecutek on the clone.
Is it possible for you to share how I can clone my DME? Contact FEMTO? MG Flasher told me 4 months ago it would have Motiv support “soon.” ECUTek told me 3 times to get FEMTO MHD unlock which wasn’t supported. Then BM3. Then told me they don’t support BM3. LOL. So yeah it’s been a struggle.
With upgrading the turbo, manifold high flow catted downpipe and bigger injectors with a 93 octane tune...how much more or less your looking at hp/tq wise?
you dont need bigger injectors for a 93 tune. You can expect to make somewhere around 360-400whp
