"His dad gave him the key to the greatest pleasure...I mean, the greatest treasure in the land."
You were right on both counts.🤣
When Dasha yelled "Don't pull the lever!" I had an immediate flashback of Yzma yelling at Kronk, " Wrong lever.....!" 😂
i did that gag at work around a bunch of big burly guys one day when i was at the bottom of a fermenting tank and had to be lowered into it with a belay system. and my partner was very good at speed control but one day i went faster than usual and as i slowed down i yelled "Wrong lever!!!" all i heard was a bunch of chuckles and seth rogan style laughing.
Me too.
"Why do we even _have_ that lever?"
Well done...!
That is a great one, but the lever in Benny the Cab from Roger Rabbit is in first place for my flashbacks. Even though it was "pull", not "don't pull".
+100 points for recognizing Patrick Stewart
Right!!!
For me, Latrine is the unsung hero of this movie. She was played by Tracey Ullman, an amazing British comedienne who had a couple of American shows in the 80s and 90s. She’s hilarious. She had a hit song in the 80s called They Don’t Know (About Us). Her impressions are always great. This is one of the most 90s movies ever.
She makes the most of every moment they give her.
@@LordVolkov I was that close. I touched it. 😂
It was in her talkshow in 1989 a very famous animated series had its first seasons. The simpsons
Tracy Ullman's a legend and without her and her show we'd have never gotten The Simpsons. That alone is worthy of praise.
Her movie, I Love You to Death, also starring: Kevin Kline, River Phoenix, John Hurt, and Keanu Reeves was also fantastic.
A lot of the jokes were based on the Kevin Costner movie for a few years earlier, called "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves". That's why Carey said that at least he could do an English accent, and why Patrick Stewart played a Scottish king of England, becuase Sean Connery was the king in the Costner movie.
This movie is amazing, and becomes 100x more funnier if you have seen Kevin Costner's "Robin Hood: The Prince of Thieves" that this movie mainly parodies
It also draws considerably from the 1938 Adventures of Robin Hood starring Errol Flynn. Both the dining room scene and the archery contest are direct homages to the Errol Flynn movie :)
Agreed. SO many of the jokes rely on having seen Prince of Thieves first. The movie is still funny on its own, but it's even BETTER if you watch PoT first.
"Unlike *other* Robin Hood's, *I* can speak with a British accent." 🔥 😂👍
Kudos to Dasha for catching the "I'll take two!" comment made by Little John during the scene where the rabbi explains what circumcision is. She is the first reactor I have watched who has caught that line, which is one of my favorites in this movie. Mel Brooks always writes these background "sleeper" lines into his movies.
Great work, my Russian friend. A top-notch reaction.
Love it, this was my first ever Mel Brooks movie and to this day it's my favorite too. A couple thoughts. When Dasha says "The greatest pleasure in all the land. Oh, I mean the greatest treasure!" I immediately said aloud, "Can't it be both?" Also during the speech when Dasha asks what accent that was, he was doing an impersonation of Winston Churchill and his famous Finest Hour WWII speech. Achoo(Dave Chappelle in case you didn't recognize him) is also doing an impersonation during his speech though he's mimicking Malcolm X and his famous civil rights quote "We didn't land on Plymouth Rock, the rock landed on us." The last one is easy to miss if you're not an American. Hell, even many Americans don't know it sadly.
"So many Americans don't even know sadly" You are right, unfortunately. Truer words have never been said, uh written.
I have to say, I thought he was doing Joe Clark, myself.
@@Caseytify I'm assuming you're talking about Achoo? Nah, the glasses and the quote were a big enough giveaway but he also does a good job of emulating Malcom X's cadence and righteous indignation.
Lots of Americans would have recognized it in 1993. Denzel Washington played Malcolm X in 1992.
You can basically ask anyone over the age of 30 if they have heard of this movie and they'll go into a long rant about how much they love it and will quote the film. It's a must watch comedy for pretty much everyone haha. I want to add, if you like the modern twist added to a medieval film I HIGHLY recommend "A Knights Tale". It's also just an amazing movie overall, has Heath Ledger, Alan Tudyk, and Paul Bettany.
Absolutely. Men in Tights is a masterful parody of all Robin Hood films, and Knight's Tale is just....it just feels so good. Man I miss Heath Ledger.
I don't particularly like this movie. Knight's Tale is good though.
Yeah because they totally had performances of We Will Rock You by Queen in the Medieval times.
@@jackcoleman1784That was done deliberately by the directors to show the parallels between modern sports and medieval tournaments. It isn't like anyone involved thought the song was that old, or thought the audience would.
@@jasondolph2785 My point wasn't that people would think it was authentically medieval so much as much as that it was a terrible idea that didn't fit the setting of the movie in any such way. It literally jerks you out of the setting you're supposed to be immersed in and is notorious for it's terribleness.
You surely WERE laughing a LOT, Dasha. Your laughter had ME laughing!!! And I enjoyed this movie also. Mel Brooks' humor is infectious!!!! Truly. I don't recall seeing anyone else's channel where they'd laugh anywhere close to how much... and how HARD you were laughing. Made the whole experience that much more enjoyable.
"I love how they put rap together with medieval music"
The rapping minstrels is one of the most layered jokes in the movie and one of my faves.
I much prefer Mel's satire to his reference humor, and Men in Tights leans a bit much on the references of the time. Still a lot of fun.
And the amazing thing is thing is that it actually works great. And it is beleived that the minstrels actually did had a form of spoken word/early form if raplike performances when telling of news and stories. And it is still done in some parts of france
@@marcusfridh8489It's incredibly nuanced, even mocking blackface 'minstrel shows'. Just a fantastic joke to bookend the movie with.
28:48 Dasha! That part is even funnier when you know that the 'pill' she gave him is a candy that was really popular with small children at that time....called a 'lifesaver'.
Cary Elwes is amazing in spoofs like this one, cool reaction as always Dasha, you have a nice day sweetie 🥰❤️

This is one of my favorite guilty pleasure movies. Almost every minute of it had me laughing. I really loved having Patrick Stewart in it in the end.
😁👍 I remember seeing this when it came out, and my favorite gag was the fact that nobody's singing voice in this movie even remotely resembles their speaking voice. As you've probably noticed, The same actors pop up in a lot of different Mel Brooks movies. Dom DeLuise (the guy doing the Godfather spoof) was also the movie director at the end of "Blazing Saddles," and Dick Van Patten (The Abbot) was also King Roland in "Spaceballs."
The accent during the speech that Robin gave was Sir Winston Churchill. Good fun, Daria!
The actor portraying Little John was the first actor to portray Marvel Comics version of Thor👍
The dig about speaking with an English accent is about the Robin Hood film starring Kevin Costner (an American).
Modern archery won't hurt your fingers, there's a device called a finger tab used with recurve bows, and a release aid for combound bows which is like a trigger device.
It's been a LONG time since I've seen this movie :)) I never realized that Marion was played by the woman from The Mask, and I forgot that the king from Spaceballs was in it :) (and Patrick Stewart too!)
This movie is silly as hell and one of my top 3 comedy films. I don't think I'll ever get tired of Blinkin' as a watchman scene.
This film as absolutely Hilarious, I was fortunate enough to meet Mel Brooks once, I won a contest and me and my father got to meet OUR Comedy hero, Best part is I made him Laugh! I Was born Fully Native American (Lakota) And was adopted by a Jewish family at 6 months old, And I told Mel "Oy It Was Such A Shanda, I Should Have Never Bought Gribines From A Mohel, It's Too Chewy!" He lost it XD Have to thank Robin Williams for that joke XD, Keep Up The Great Work Dasha, Cheers! :D
The life-saving pill was actually a Life Savors candy. Silent Movie and High Anxiety are the next Mel Brooks movies you should watch.
Latrine's "magic pill" was literally a Lifesaver. 😂
Don't worry about your fingers if you want to try archery. The range will provide a finger tab or shooting glove with your rental. It takes time to build up tendon strength, but that should not be an issue with a beginner's bow.
The priest during the wedding scene was also the king of Druidia in Spaceballs
I never noticed that detail before. Thank you!
Robin Hood, per the legends, was a commoner, from a town called Loxley. On his way to an archery contest, he was accosted and mocked by a group of foredt ran gr ers who worked for the King. The argument ended when one shot an arrow at Robin and missed, while Robin returned fire, and didn't miss. Thereafter, he is an outlaw and lived in Sherwood Forest, near to the town of Nottingham. Robin's band never accosts the poor or honest working folk, instead focusing in the clergy and idle wealthy. Unless the targets really annoy Robin, he actually hosts them for the evening, offering food and drink, watching archery and quarterstaff nouts. Then he will go through the goods based on his decision, either its allowed to continue with the waylaid group to be delivered to its owner intact, or its divided into thirds, with one third going to the recipient, one third to Robin snd his men (or sold with them keeping the money) and the last third sold and the funds used for charity.
Funny thought, the stories of Robin Hood roughly coincide with the Norman invasion of England, and Robin loathes the Normans. The other probably-mythological hero of England, King Arthur, was actually supposed to be Norman, and hated the Saxons.
Sk the two greatest heroes of English legend would have utterly despised each other.
At 14:30 Robin is imitating Winston Churchill and Ahchoo is imitating Malcom X.
My parents ordered this on pay per view back in the summer of 1996. This is still my favorite comedy of all time! No way could Mel Brooks make this movie today.
14:35 "What _accent_ is that?"
Oh, Dasha, that was a _Winston Churchill_ impersonation. Mel Brooks has a lot of fun with _anachronisms_ in his movies. Robin Hood channels Winston Churchill (though, somehow, doesn't manage to capture his charisma) and then Ahchoo channels Malcolm X
I watched this movie in the theater when it came out.
Konéčno! I've been away from this channel in a while because you, Dasha, have been reacting to movies I haven't seen but want to see. So finally being back is great! And you picked a great movie.
14:30 He's making an impression of Sir Winston Churchill, prime minister of England (1940-1945 and 1951-1955) who gave this famous speech announcing the beginning of England's participation in the WWII. Now, Achoo is making an impression of Malcom X, human rights activist famous by his participation in the civil rights movement.
This is hilarious, I'm glad she had fun she definitely deserves it
More Mel Brooks movies:
- The Producers (1968)
- High Anxiety
- Silent Movie
- History of the World Part 1
- Dracula Dead and Loving It
Great job Dasha! It's always fun watching you enjoy a good comedy and you can't go wrong with Mel Brooks. Keep up the great work.
I enjoyed watching you enjoying this so much.
😀👍
“It’s Good to be the King” is a song Mel Brooks wrote, but doesn’t appear, in his film “History of the World, Part One”. It’s a hoot.
Watching Dasha react to comedies is my new favorite thing... Thanks for the laughs and smiles! ❤️ from Texas
Love watching your reactions, Dasha! It is like sharing time with a grandchild several times a week. ❤
This movie parodies at the same time Errol Flynn's and Kevin Costner's Robin Hood films. When I was a kid, my mom used to be fascinated with Errol Flynn's film.
You should also check out the movies that were spoofed in the classic The Adventures of Robin Hood 1938, & Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves 1991. Both are great movies to watch and you'll get the context for the spoofing.
That accent was in reference to Winston Churchill's famous speech declaring war on Germany for WWII.
And the other accent reference was ofc in reference to Kevin Costner
"Prince of Thieves" is still my second favorite Robin Hood movie (Mel Brooks wins)!!
@@Songfugel The irony is that Costner's Upper Midwest accent is actually closer to what Middle English phonology actually sounded like than the modern Received Pronunciation.
@@Hiraghm Many believe otherwise. 87% like this movie on 1 audience poll. It's a likeable movie, but I do agree it could be much better. Still worth watching.
"Is it the key to some other chick's Everlast" had me cracking up
Fun fact: the real King Richard didn’t speak English. He spent most of his life in Aquitaine, which is in France, and French was the language he spoke. (He probably also spoke Occitan)
The prison manager is playing the part of a Maitre'd.
... The camel racers were a comment on the slur "camel jockey," often used for those from the middle east.
Archery can be tricky. One of the most important points is wearing a bracer on you bow arm, to protect it from the string.
Also, (ahem) "well endowed" women can get in the way, if you see what I mean. 😏
Patrick Stewart appearing as Richard speaking in a Scottish accent is a joke about Kevin Costner's Robin Hood, where Sean Connery appeared as Richard speaking in Connery's natural Scottish accent.
"It's good to be the king" was a running gag in History of the World Part One. Another great Mel Brooks movie.
I laughed so hard when, I first saw Robin Hood: men in tights 10 years old.
There are MANY stories about Robin Hood. He was a very popular topic in fiction during the middle ages but here's the gist. He was supposed to be a nobleman that was ousted through fraud and deceit because he disapproved of the king's laws where he basically stole from the common folk and let his friends do the same. So the poor were getting even poorer because he taxed the hell out of them then took whatever they had when they couldn't pay. Robin Hood set up in the forest and, well you know the rest. Historians thing that he was probably a real person but who he really was and what, if anything said about him is or isn't true is lost to history.
My favorite part in this movie is
"I heard that coming a mile away :) Right-o, Blinkin, very good. Pardon? Who's talking?".
The moving mole is a callback to Igor's moving hump in Young Frankenstein.
There's been a lot of Robin Hood film , but yes this particular film is a spoof of the 91 version: Prince of Thieves staring Kevin Constener, Morgan Freeman, and Alan Rickman
To this day i still quote the "hey blinkin, did you say abe Lincoln?" line, even out of context and laugh to myself, also little jon falling into the tiny stream is one of the funniet things ever
Dasha you are back! awesome, read your post for the fans, glad everything solved quickly.
I always love your reactions. I am glad you liked this movies so much.
The executioner is the same actor who played the creepy 'colonel' in Boogie Nights...
Another medieval movie that incorporates more modern things is "A knights Tale", with actor Heath Ledger, the Joker from "Batman", and Gabriel in "The Patriot".
14:30 Robin is doing an impersonation of Sir Winston Churchill; after which, Achoo puts on a pair of glasses and impersonates Malcolm X.
That one accent was Winston Churchill's "we shall defend our island" speech during WWII. Iron Maiden used it as an intro for some versions of Aces High too.
One of my favourite comedy movies 😂
25:25 Patrick Stewart will always be Captain Picard for me. 🖖🥰
And doctor xavier in the x men franchise
12:46 damn. It took me years before I realized what that meant and yet you got that instantly. Damn it
Jaywalking was a joke (he didn't want to really say why)
Screaming boy (Home Alone movie)
Will Scarlet O'Hara ( Gone with the Wind character)
English accent- Must watch Robin Hood : Prince of Thieves, which is this movie is mostly a parody of.
After ears, Winston Churchill, Malcolm X
The dungeon mater was dressed as a restaurant maitre D, the feast scene was from 1939 Robin Hood movie with Errol Flyn. Also he was referring to Kevin Cost ers movie Robin Hood, Prince of thieves movie for English accent. His speech in the woods was referring to Winston Churchill's speech to the people of Great Britain during WW 2.
I like you were ab!e to understand the jokes and found them funny
Fun Fact: The Actor who played Will Scarlett O'Hara would later play the part of Robin Hood himself in the TV show The New Adventures of Robin Hood that ran from 1997 to 1999 on TNT.
I had not heard of this movie until I met my wife. I was raised off of young frankenstein, but Robin Hood: Men in Tights was new to me. Once my wife convinced me to watch it, I really enjoyed it. I'm glad my wife and I got to see you react to one of our favorite movies. The only thing is that there are some jokes that just don't age well, but thankfully not enough for you to notice.
3:41 "This is going to take a _very_ long way, isn't it?"
Not when you swim with the _filmmaker_ at your back.
My first and fave MB film
The It's good to be the king line is a shout out to his other movie History of the World Part 1. Another great Brooks movie
I kind of want Dasha to react to the ‘2012’ movie. I’m sure it will be an emotional rollercoaster for her.
Nice catch on the mole! Many reviewers don't notice until Rottingham calls it out.
3:22 no, dear heart, not camel racing. I might run afoul of YT guidelines, but a disparaging term for Arab people back in the day was "camel jockeys". So, Brooks put literal jockeys on camels to skewer the slur.
14:31 he is mimicking Winston Churchill, Prime Minister of the UK during World War 2.
This was one of the first movies I saw growing up that Mel Brooks made, the others were Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein, and Spaceballs
In Archery for the fingers you can get a Tab, and maybe an Arm Guard.
Give Olympic Archery a try, its fun.
14:17 Well it was medieval England. With the number of people that had leprosy it is quite possible they could “lend him their ears”.👂
Robin Hood:Prince of Thieves as a follow up. What it was spoofed from.
A toll is a toll, and a roll is a roll.
Cinema gold for my sense of humour on some bad days 😂 glad to see you laughed so much too!
Dasha, I'm sure you know you will have missed a bunch of jokes the 1st time around, but 1 you missed near the beginning is where Robin was introducing Ahchoo to Blinkin. He said, I'd like to introduce you to Ahchoo, and while you were saying, "Bless you", Blinkin responded, "A Jew?" Like Airplane!, Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein, you have to listen closely to how they pronounce everything, because that's what movies like this make jokes about (i.e. similar pronunciations, multiple meanings of words and phrases or simply taking certain words too literally). I mention this because you ARE getting used to a style of comedy that is somewhat new to you, and I thought the info might help.
The kid yelling/screaming was a reference to Home Alone and what Macaulay Culkin's character, Kevin, did after he put on the after shave lotion and burned his face (open cuts).
When Will Scarlett 1st introduced himself, he said his full name was Will Scarlett O'Hara, which was a spoof on the name of the original character, Will Scarlett from the original books/movies they were spoofing. To explain, the spoof was made by adding the name O'Hara to the end, as it refers to the name, Scarlett O'Hara, which was the name of the fictional main female character in the movie, Gone with the Wind. So, putting them both together, you get Will Scarlett O'Hara. He also says, "We're from Georgia", which *_IS_* where the movie was supposed to have taken place ... in the old Civil War era South.
The mole moving is similar to the Igor's hump from Young Frankenstein, another Mel Brooks reoccurring gag/joke.
Between this and Spaceballs.. two of my absolute all time favorite Mel Brooks movies. So glad you enjoyed it so much Dasha!
Spaceballs and this were very of their time. Blazing Saddles, The Producers and Young Frankenstein and to some extent History of the World Part I were very much rooted in their era, so they’re nostalgic if you lived through it, but they don’t age as well. I like all of Mel’s movies, but I’m not going to pretend this was better than his work in the late 60s and early 70s.
I haven't seen that movie in years I'm definitely gonna watch it now. but great reaction as always.
6:03 Robin: "I'd like you to meet Achoo."
Blinkin: "A _Jew?_ _Here?"_
Rabbi Tuckman: "Shalom."
12:37 "I shall _lead_ the people of England in a revolt _against_ you."
"And why should the people follow _you?"_
"Because unlike some _other_ Robin Hoods, _I_ can speak with an _English accent."_
Let me add a bit of _historical_ context to this chide. This was two years after the movie _Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves._ The title character, there, was played by Kevin Costner.
Now I didn't pick up on it (they don't exactly call attention to it), but in this movie, Costner does _not_ speak with an English accent. It's my understanding he _tried,_ because he wanted to make his Robin Hood _accurate,_ but he just couldn't. He's dyed-in-the-wool American. He's a good actor, but he's a dyed-in-the-wool _American_ actor. You want phonetic skills, you will _not_ find them with him. They ultimately told him not to even try.
But Mel Brooks caught this fact and decided to have a little fun at Costner's expense when _he_ lampooned this movie, two years later.
Ironically, Costner's accent is actually closer to what the English of the 12th century sounds like. The Received Pronunciation people think of as the "English Accent" didn't develop until the late-19th Century.
When Dasha said *"She Sounds So Horrrrrny" milk almost came out of my nose from laughing so hard..*

It's good to be a king.... - you really need to see Mel Brooks's history of the world part 1
Yes Camel racing is a real thing, l saw a special on Animal Planet
Dasha you should try archery! They make this thing called a release, which is a device that releases the string with the pull of a trigger. It’s much easier on your fingers. I bet you’d be good. 😊
Great movie. Fyi the blonde kid screaming is a spoof on Home Alone . The movie is mainly a spoof of Kevin Costner Robin Hood movie in 1991.
Another great Mel Brooks movie: Dracula: Dead and Loving It
3:17 "Those are camel racings. Is that a thing?"
Actually, yeah. It's conceivable that Mel Brooks was not aware of it, but I've heard they race camels in _Australia._
They weren't in the 12th. century, though. That's the joke.
4:00 Rent-a-Wreck is a company that rents used cars at discounted prices.
Привет Даша. You are my favorite reactor. If you'd like more Robin Hood, there's The Adventures of Robin Hood 1938 and the Disney version from 1973. The Disney version is a cartoon and all the characters are animals. You liked the fox in this one, right? Robin and Marion are foxes and little John is a bear.
"We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be." What accent is that? Winston Churchill, 1940. The accent was enhanced by clouds of cigar smoke and gallons of whiskey, brandy and champagne.
3:20 The term "Camel Jockey" is used as a pejorative term for people of Arab decent...
14:58 "I always wanted to try... the... arrow shooting. Always. But I heard that it's very painful for the... for your fingers."
Ah. Well, first, Dasha, the sport is called "archery."
But second, the existence of misconceptions like that is one reason you need to give it a try. I mean there is a proper way to position the fingers on the hand that's drawing the string, it's true. And it's true, if you did it _all_ day, _every_ day, it might wear the inner surface of your fingertips on _that_ hand to a callous.
But it's _also_ true that there are people who turn to archery as an entertaining _hobby._ They give it a try and they discover they _like_ it. You might be _one_ of these people. Who's to say?
"Is it a key for some other chick's Everlast?" 🗝🔓🙈🤣
My favorite adaptation of Robin Hood is the Disney cartoon
The movie is a bit of a masterpiece.
23:16 "Mervin or Mervyn" is itself not a funny name but it seems that all was a joke about the director Mel Brooks. "Mel" is from Melvin, Melvin James Brooks. So it seems is just making fun of Mel Brooks.
