My husband and I are "old". He has been a life-long progressive liberal. Within the last decade, he has done a complete swing to "the other side", he reveres Putin, denigrates the Ukrainians, he voted for Trump in 2016! The morning after that election, when I discovered that, I lost it! I have had to say to him many times, in order to have peace in our home, we need to agree to disagree. This is painful for me, our family and friends. I miss the ability to discuss both sides of issues! I fear for our future.
I really can feel your pain. My late husband was born in the USSR and had made fun of Putin many times, but he became sick and stayed home all day watching Russian tv. The propaganda turned him into a defender of everything Putin did. Even his family in Russia thought he was quite delusional. That makes me think that it probably is the constant long-time exposition to propaganda that brainwashes people.I could not follow him on his way. We also tried to agree to disagree, but I lost my temper after Russia shot down the Dutch passenger aircraft. It was a very difficult time. Since I have always thought of Trump as being a waste of space, after the first time I saw him on T.V,. I don't understand the people who like him, or don't see him for who he is. I used to read about him while eating lunch at my desk and he always struck me as a horrible person. I guess I am in the cult of people who hate this man on a daily basis, which is why I watch shows like this one. I need to hear from people who understand how dangerous this man is. When Trump first came out announcing that he was running for president I was shocked. I was upset that night and was unable to sleep the night that he won. I had been telling anyone who would listen that this man becoming president would be very bad. Nobody agreed with me and I was told often that he might be good at the job since he was a business man and he was wealthy, like that qualified him for the job of running the country. I was unable to keep quiet and when people told me that they thought Trump was doing a good job I pointed out a few things that should have changed their minds but that never happened. I ended up staying away from people who liked this horrible man. I want to know every day about the latest dumb thing he's done or said, while aways hoping to hear that something horrible has happened to him - anything horrible. I can't ever remember hating someone like I hate this man. I long for the day when we no longer have to hear from him. By the way, how is it that crazy leaders are always odd looking and weird men?

Most of the Maga peeople I've talked to never payed much attention to politics until Trump, their reality show hero, started his campaign.
So they don't know the history or know the differences between the two main partys. I've been politically aware since Kennidy and I was 9yrs old when he was assinated. So I am shocked sometimes that most people are so unaware.

I was targeted by a cult when i was younger. However, i am probably the most disobedient, contrary person and no one is going to tell me what to do or how to think. It didn't work by a long shot. I was fortunate to walk away. I adored some of the people i met there but i felt sorry for them that they felt they owed these people their loyalty and lives.

A schoolmate brought me as a poor art student to an EST presentation. A rather big crowd. A recruiter who pretended to be friendly until the end, started screaming at me, "It's ONLY $400 (in 1981), you don't have $400? How do you NOT have $400? It's not about the money, ya know!" Oh goodness, I never talked to my schoolmate again. Heck, I was even warned about her--but people didn't know as much about cults back then. The whole EST approach was so off-putting to me, but I'm sure there are smoother operations at the right time & place.
Student are often tartgeting in college, there are christian groups all over. My sister and daughter were both targeted.

Dr Hassan nailed it by stating clinicians must be educated & trained in malignant narcissism. I am a degreed registered nurse. I never HEARD of Malignant Narcissism! I saw a psychiatrist twice a week for two years. My psychiatrist (a medical doctor having spent her life specializing in mental health) never mentioned narcissism, let alone Malignant Narcissism. I was born at the tail end of an extremely large, extremely strict, religious family managed by an extremely Malignant Narcissistic set of parents. This lead me to marry an extremely Malignant Narcissistic spouse. The general public should be informed of Malignant Narcissism from an early age, along with reading, writing and arithmetic! I’m positive this knowledge would save many a lifetime of grief and spare the masses from the diabolical political conditions in the world today!

That last point you made reminds me of the time I was shopping with my mother when we noticed a man lying on the sidewalk. People were walking past the man while I headed straight for him. My mother tried to stop me and told me that the man was probably drunk. I ignored her. It turned out that this man was in medical distress and I was able to get him help. I have always been like this. Another time I was walking around with a bunch of friends after dinner, when we came across a man who had fallen in front of a busy store by the automatic doors. He was being pulled back because his briefcase was stuck in the doors and he wouldn't let go of it. People would walk by him and constantly pull him back so he couldn't get up. I simply walked over and stepped forward, keeping the doors open and this man was then able to get up. I have also gone up to animals in distress and never regretted it. Animals realize that I am going to help them and I have never been bitten.

When I was young, not yet familiar with downtown Chicago during morning pedestrian traffic, I witnessed a man across the street go down & so many people were actually walking around him. I figured at the time, it was to not be late for work? What a cruel world, I couldn't compute, nothing made sense to me. People eventually came to his aid, but the first 15 seconds or so felt like a very long time.

My sibling worked for the State Department for a few decades, and the Defense Department before that and had worked on various projects including researching extremist organizations within the United States. I remember that he warned me off against communicating with some of these people and their groups. He wasn’t concerned that I would get pulled in so much as he was concerned that they were violent cultists, mostly angry and paranoid white middle aged men who are quick to react to disagreements to their nonsense.
In Arizona it was dangerous to put a BIDEN sign in your yard for the election. Still is. The results of doing so are vandalism, a keyed car and other childish stuff from Trumpers.

I finally succeeded (mostly) with an old friend after years of trying. Ironically it was the Fox News settlement that did it. He said nobody pays 3/4 of a billion dollars for nothing and identified Trump as a narcissist. We’ll see if it takes.

Lots of decent leaders are narcissists. On some level they have to be to think they ae qualified to lead. The problem is the malignancy aspect of the personality. If only Mr Hassan's advice could be followed; I agree that young people and people in general are suffering more from anxiety. A welcome to Dr Hassan from Germany! I ordered his book "The Cult of Trump" several weeks ago and read it with grat interest. A MUST read! I wonder whether enough people have access to this book and than might find a way to seek professional help. It will be a long and painful way.
I heard a speaker in college in Canada in the late 70’s who was a deprogrammed Moonie. Sounds exactly like the same info, although not likely the same speaker. Was deeply impressive to me as a teenager and it has stayed with me through my life, so I truly do understand the message as to how people are brainwashed into cults.
