I love the way the music was handled in this game. Especially the fact that during boss fights the lyrics only start when the boss starts to take you more seriously. My favourite boss that does this is Sam because the first time you fight him he’s not even trying and easily beats you so there is no lyrics at all. But then at the end of the game during your 2nd fight with him his lyrics start immediately showing that’s unlike other bosses he is taking you seriously immediately and not holding back. Speaks a lot about his character too
It`s kind funny knowing that vocalist from The Only Thing I Know For Real liked the parody of said song so much that he sang it himself and dropped in on YT xD
I love how fluid these songs are, as someone who has played this game multiple times its insane to me how well these songs match their bosses. Even to the point that the songs seem to match how each boss dies. Ray dies being overwhelmed by a greater predator, completely overwhelmed with Raiden's power Mistral's charm fails to work and she bites off more than she can chew when Raiden outwits her and uses her own weaponry to kill her, stopping her deadly rampage Monsoon seems to just give up, finally happy to be dead with a smile on his face, his ending is happier than the rest Sundowner dies as he lives, embodying the cruelty and hate of war and innocence, he meets his end violently and with a almost childlike glee, and for style points, being slashed in half like he did to so many others Sam dies still confused, he is a man of principle and will, having such a enormous amount of power despite not being augmented, yet he is bested by Raiden and their dance comes to a sudden and powerful end, completely destroying everything Sam believed in Khamsin dies believing and fulfilling his doctrine of Freedom, that any creature no matter how small being able to claw freedom and power to break the bonds of slavery is a "damn good mutt" Armstrong's 2 song fight is incredibly complex and masterful. From starting off as exactly the type of tyrant you expect him to be only so much worse. Then ripping away the facade to reveal the ultimately too human man overflowing with hope and ideals who is Raiden's equal in almost every measure. Both bleeding and tearing into each other hoping to create a brighter future for the one's they protect and trying to get humanity to evolve beyond its current ways. Their legendary fight though extremely close, with both giving it their everything, ends with Raiden metaphorically and literally shattering Armstrong's dream by ripping out his heart and crushing it. Showing that despite everything, despite Armstrong's ideals and words, his heart is too soft to really change anything and that he doesn't possess the true will and desire to do what must be done.
I definetly recommend the credits song "The War Still Rages Within", the melangcholic theme is the perfect completion of the long journey the game offers you.
That face you do while listening to rules of nature is the actual need inside of you of going out to some workout by the sheer energy the song injects into your brain "Out here only the strong survives"
imagine a fan of soundtracks, games, visuals, action, when playing and all of this being injected at once... It's a lot of adrenaline with a lot of appreciation for every second 😅
As great as every single track is, Collective Consciousness might also be my favorite lol. I love the demo version too which sounds very different but also awesome, much lighter on the wubstep with different lyrics and more abrasive vocals. Stains of Time might be tied with it for me.
I hope you're going to react to "The War Still Rages Withing" too! It perfectly sums up the theme of the game. I can also recommend Geoffrey Day's cover of "The Only Thing I know For Real". He helped on the original soundtrack and even brings back a lot of other musicians who worked of the original song to create this heavier cover.

A Stranger I Remain is my favorite track in the game. Also, what does most of these songs justice is how they are dynamically implemented during the fight phases. Pure Hype!
Since no one has said it and I understand your policy on not having time to play games just for the music, I’ll just explain here: That big break in Rules of Nature is synced up to play right as you begin a quick time event where Raiden parries a sword the size of a city block, and continues over the playable cutscene so it ends right as the boss dies. MGR’s ost has many cool cues that loop parts and sync during pivotal moments in the boss fights. Tbh though it could easily be understood from simply watching a playthrough of any one boss fight to get the idea, for anyone who does want to check it out.
To add onto this, the fights take place in multiple phases where the boss' moveset and the state of the arena changes, and the music is designed to follow the changes in each one. The boss fights start with the instrumental version of their respective track, and when the second phase of the fight kicks in, so do the lyrics of the song.
I love the time you gave to analyize a stranger i remain. I feel like of the boss themes it often gets overlooked but i feel it has some of the most interesting musical elements

One of my favorite details is in the beginning of collective consciousness where it sounds like the orchestra/band is booting up, just like the giant mecha that is currently booting up to battle with you. (also underlined by that electric sound getting higher pitched in the background.)
I've listened to the Wheelchair Sam version of "The Only Thing I Know for Real", which ended up getting covered by the original singer, so much that I was confused at first hearing the actual lyrics.
I remember this game i first played when it came out on the Playstation 3, remember about 94% of the trophies completed. Gameplay was more insane than the actual soundtrack.
whats cool is that all the boss musics before this have been all related to the bosses, but it has to be this way is raidens song and his active struggles and mindset, through all hes been through in his past and the current situation in revengeance
I remember buying the PS3 disc in 2014 and playing it for like 20 minutes...still not understanding the parry system...and grinding through the first level or two. That soundtrack summoned my younger and now dormant 'Beavis and Butthead' self- and it was an F'ing awesome soundtrack! For some reason I didn't play or finish the game, and just picked it up again recently to play through. It was one of the only games that had that kind of soundtrack that phased in with the gameplay!
for context this game is basically half game half movie with like 2-3 hours of total cutscenes and heavily scripted outcomes accompanying almost every second being in battle so the music style fits it very well
The instruments used in each song sorta sounds like the weapons thet use, Mistral's polearm sounds like the piano part, Monsoon hits the fastest, Sundowner hits the hardest and Sam's hits echo just like the flute
Id love a Hot wind blowing then give a relisten to I'm my own master now compare and contrast. They share thematic elements musically while lyrically are about almost the exact opposite

Playing the game to experience the music is completely different! And I mean it HITS diffrent, you have my word

I've come here from nowhere, across the unforgiven sea
I came here for the Red Sun reaction, but I have to leave because It Has To Be This Way.
