Took a gamble at home Depot today and got the Varathane water based poly. I'm so glad I did after watching your video. It's my first time painting a piece of furniture, and I'm nervous about getting the finish right but I feel so much better after watching your video!
Thanks for sharing all these tips! I don't use a spray gun since I don't redo many furniture but I use a flat foam sponge and apply satin finish water based polyurethane without any imperfections. The top coat levels itself beautifully. The final result always depends on the product's self leveling abilities. I experienced a nightmare when applying oil based polyurethane! That was a challenge!
I loved this video! Please do more like it. It’s refreshing to see someone show their vulnerability. It helps us get through the tough times seeing someone like you admit they go through tough times too. You are a great teacher. 😀
I've been doing it on & off foe 20 years. Had a top coat curdle & flaky dry streak last weekend. Now I get to fix it with fingers crossed this weekend. Thank you for this video!
You made an excellent point about about using poly --not wax--to seal a pieces that you are flipping to sell. I have often wondered about why someone would use wax to seal a piece that they buyer would probably not know how to take care of. Thanks for validating my thoughts!
Me too. Can never understand why people use wax. I would much rather use something that will give me a "longer" preserve. Well in my opinion at least. Thank you so much for this video. 👏👏❤️
Just came across this video. Excellent tips. Agree 100% about using a sprayer. Just one thing that isn't mentioned in videos dedicated to DIY newbies with a sprayer (not this video as it is not about sprayers). Majority of these DIY sprayers are electric. Combine that with an oil-based poly and that creates a very overlooked fire hazard. If oil-based be sure to find out its flashpoint and compare to the sprayer's manufacturer and their flashpoint restrictions and only spray in a well ventilated area.
A really informative and helpful video, I admire your straightforward and honest explanation of things. I have always struggled with applying the lacquer finish, so much so that I almost always use wax even though I’m not very good with that either! I am now considering buying a spray gun, though only for the lacquer as I love painting with a brush. Thank you from the uk.
Honestly helpful. People are coming here looking for tip, tricks, what not to do’s advice, and so on. I think a woman’s perspective is a bit more elaborative, and detailed verses some of the men’s short and direct videos. This is coming from a man who is very OCD, and critical of the quality of my work. I am staining and clear coating black kitchen cabinets for the first time, and definitely on edge about how the clear will turn out. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experiences.
I really appreciate your honesty and tips. I have been contemplating getting a sprayer but have not for both reasons you sites: cost and intimidation! I will rethink. Thanks Amy. You are super awesome!
You are speaking my language. This was so helpful . For the tips and my self doubt as a beginner. I’ve been pulling my hair out over applying poly over black paint
OMG, your intro describes my frustration so well... I haven't even watched all your video but... I am already feeling hope. No matter what I was doing I always getting brush, sponge, foam, spray marks 😫😫😫 I had spented much more time correcting than actually painting. But I get this right no matter what 💪. PD: I bought an sprayer and in the middle stopped working, I tried to unclogging it, but I couldn't find any obstruction so, I will have to try again, thank u so much for creating this video😊.
I love your videos about painting furniture!! I’m just starting my adventure in chalk painting, and watching your videos has helped me on this endeavor. Thanks for sharing all your techniques.
Hello , great tip on using flat clear . I use Dixie Belle products , their satin clear for a topcoat . It’s somewhat challenging sometimes getting it to lay down correctly . So decided to try the Dixie Belle flat clear . Wow , total game changer ! Definitely makes applying clear so much easier ..
Love love love my Homeright, I literally have a sprayer graveyard closet filled with almost every sprayer out there, yup tried them all and the homeright is the absolute best, the amount of overspray I got with nearly every other spray gun almost had me determined to never buy another one until I found the super max finish!
Hello Amy. Thank you for letting us in on your tips and tricks to putting on a sealer, and using a sprayer. I have not tried it yet, but looking forward to learning how to use one in the future. 👍❤️❤️❤️
I have been wanting to maybe start flipping furniture. My worry has been the brush marks. What if I can’t sell it. But after watching this video I am 100% sure I want to do this. Thank you very much for this video.
Good advice thanks. I'd forgotten how difficult & messy using satin/gloss paint instead of water based varnish. But sanding & distressing paint is better with satin paint.
Thank you so much for this video---I'm chalk painting a buffet myself, first time flipper here, and was debating on the wax verses polyacrylic. You saved me! My question is, how long to let the chalk paint cure before putting on the poly?
I know that this was done a year ago but I just found it. Ty so much for educating me. May I ask why one wouldn’t seal ALL furniture make overs with hemp seed oil since there are no streaks there??
Thank you for these great tips. I've used matte top coats for years but the sprayer that's been in the storage for years has been too 'scary' to try...not so now!
I just stained a tabletop sanded it down originally to where it was to a yellow pine. Then stained it with a walnut stain, now it's time to polyurethane and I'm nervous by doing it.
The only reason I don’t get a sprayer is because of the space I work in. Live in a small flat 😩. Can’t wait to have a house and proper space to upcycle furniture etc
I broke out my new sprayer and tried it on a simple small piece that woildnt take hours to fix. Used it with chalk paint when it was breezy and it still tuened out great. I guess ill try it with poly
Do you have any suggestion what to use to waterproof my painted deck furnitures? I used a black, satin, indoor/outdoor paint on them. Thanks in advance.
+1 for the sprayer tip. My only issue with that is that the ambient conditions must be right. For people like me who live in a cold climate region, and do not want to make a mess inside my house, it's basically a no-go until late May - June.
Thank you so much for telling us the truth about furniture wax as a sealer! I used polycrylic for my first ever furniture piece and didn't experience what I'm experiencing with my 2nd piece sealing it with clear furniture wax.. paint is just coming off with just a scratch 😩
I know this is an older video! It’s so informative. I have a question. I’m painting a few pieces a light pink. Will polyurethane discolor the finish? Am I better off using a polycrylic? Thanks for any tips! Love your videos.
Hi! I’m so glad 😀 Regular Polyurethane is an oil based product so it will turn a warm yellow. You want to make sure your polyurethane says water-based. Varathane makes a great water based polyurethane with a crystal clear finish. That’s the one you want!
This is all new to me, so please forgive my ignorance and questions. They're not meant to be disrespectful in any way, rather I'm trying to completely understand. You initially said to use a flat finish with 4-5 coats then you said use a satin finish and 3-4 coats. Was the first one for brush application while the second one is for when you use a sprayer?
I bought a paint sprayer on Amazon and it was a disaster. I had a very hard time figuring out how to use it and eventually threw it away 😮😢 what a waste of money! UGH. I really need to try again and this video convinced me! Thanks Amy!!😊
Thank you for the tips. I have just recently found that using the matte/ flat finish is so much more forgiving then the satin. I’m still terrified of the sprayer. I have 2, one is pneumatic from Harbor Freight that I’ve never taken out of the box, and the other in a cheap electric one that I’ve used once over 2 years ago on some smaller items, not furniture! I don’t know why I’m so scared to try it.
I have that same sprayer, thank you for that tip! I've been cleaning it out between coats and it's been driving me crazy! I will just wipe off and use toothpick tip you gave me... So appreciate it! Question: In alot of your video's I don't see you scuff sanding before you paint. Is there a reason?
Good info. I've been talking about a sprayer for a long time. The spitter and sputter is a true complaint across the board of those who ive asked. Still considering just have to talk myself into it.
Yeah, that was a HUGE issue for me at first. It took a few months for me to figure it out. That’s probably a lot longer than it should’ve took but 🤷♀️ It ended up being worth the learning curve.
I have a solid wood table with dark stain. I burnish sanded it and then put two coats of dixie bell boss on it. I let it dry for 2 days and went back to sand it to put on my chalk paint and the primer came off when i barely sanded it with 150 grit. What did I do wrong?
2:06 Could you please explain if you use multiple coats by brush here and then it doesn't streak somehow?? Cause then you say to use a sprayer. I'm failing miserably at getting a streak free top coat on a black medicine cabinet that will get touched. I've seen spray or brush polycrylic, polyurethane, and even just oil. I don't have a sprayer. Thanks!
Thank you so much for this video 🙏🏼😅 But I still dont know Why I get a haze on my dark pices. It looks smooth, but whit a haze over it. Even when I apply some paint to the topcoat 🤷🏼♀️ I hear others struggle whit it as well 😕
I don’t know if this helps but I have been going through heck! I used DIY paint in a red with black highlights. Hard to explain. Beings it was a table top, a coffee bar, I wanted something strong. So I went with Annie Sloan’s lacquer. I bought the matte. Ugh! I have redone that top three times and was ready to throw it outside for someone to take away! What I found out, after screaming and pulling my hair out I found someone that muffled out that if you are using a dark color, you have to use a gloss finish first and then a matte after that. Don’t ask me why. I was rather upset that I would have to buy two products just to get a matte finish. But it actually worked. Personally I wasn’t impressed with the lacquer. I wish everyone would just use coasters and care for their pieces. I am working on an IKEA wide file cabinet as we speak that I took the doors off, the guts, and the legs, so it’s basically like a bookcase with one shelf. I just painted it to look darkish gray marbled effect with a wall paper backing. I have to stop being a perfectionist and just go for things. I top coated the inside shelves, and top with PolyAcrylic. Even though it’s satin it still has a sheen. So after two coats I also used a spray can of Rustoleum clear Matte Sealer - Chalk Finish. That gave it that nice finish and is durable. So I know what you mean. I actually hate putting top coats on. It gives me anxiety😂. I think in my stained pieces I’m going to go back and use Polyurethane and thin it 50/50 which makes it a wipe on. But only stain pieces that I don’t have to worry about yellowing. I hope this helps.
I got a sprayer for Christmas, but haven’t used but once. It’s scary! Do you wash your sprayer in between coats? If not, how long can it sit between coats?
Hi! I don’t wash it between coats. I wipe the tip off really well once i finish the coat. That way it doesn’t clog when it’s sitting. I usually let it sit an hour or two and it’s okay. I also wipe it a few times during spraying. If I spray the drawers I will give it a quick wipe before I move on to the top. Keeping that tip clean is the key! Good luck!!
HELP have you ever had tannin bleeding?! Paint went great then clear coat was great and next day there's brownie orange all over my furniture piece! But you never know if it will happen on each piece. Have you had that happen?

If you put a small sandwich bag over the tip of the paint sprayer with a rubber band between coats. That will keep the paint from drying out .

I do not like flat sheens, so are you saying polyurethane needs 3 to 5 coats? I like satin, semigloss or gloss.
I have chalk paint and I want to maintain the Matte look. But can’t find a definitive answer or product
Two coats of flat water based polyurethane will do the trick. It will seal the chalk paint and maintain the matte finish.
Why does it " Bubble" I use a Satin brush. & even the sponge. Makes bubbles ??
By any chance, are you shaking the container? That’s usually when I get bubbles. I have to stir carefully it or I will get bubbles.
I sprayed my seal with home right machine and the layers were uneven 😭😭 you could see lines on the paint when the light hits
Oh no! Did you apply more than one coat? You can try to even it out with the additional coats.
