    It is good to hear that even if you don't understand any of the references you can enjoy the game. Trust me, for us Czechs this game is very funny.

      Thanks for letting me know! That's fun to hear that the jokes mean something to you guys and it's not just some random humor (which it seems like to me lol).

      @@SaltyOctopus Is it a joke, a reference to the original quake? Quake got criticized for being brown and muddy when it first came out

      @@Induna123 I'm not sure to be honest.

    Armored undies is a reference to Chernobyl nuclear disaster, after which numerous jokes about lead underwear for radiation protection were made.
    "I was scared of radiation so i started to wear lead pants, now after rubber on them got cracked, all of my toes were smashed."

    Yes mate, great vid, need to add it to the Backlog of Shame! That side by side comparison with Quake and Dusk was really useful because up until now I’ve thought ‘hrot is quite brown but then so is quake, no big deal’ but yeah, not that brown!

      Hey man! Thanks for watching. Backlog of shame... Ain't that the truth! Lol. I appreciate the comment. :)

    Ya def looks more closer to dusk then anything. I agree the brown is a little too repetitive in the game and makes everything look alike.

      I agree. I felt like it was more dusk than quake too. Thanks for watching!

    Looks great. Out of interest what does 'Intruder mode' and 'Blank Slate mode' do?

    • @SaltyOctopus
      @SaltyOctopus  Год назад

      Not sure about intruder tbh, but blank slate is you start with a pistol at the start of every map.

    • @aaaa_0484
      @aaaa_0484 Год назад +2

      Intruder mode mixes up enemies and pickups in the specific level you're playing.

    I think this was a fair review, but I completely disagree with you about the brown color palette. I believe the "excessive" use of brown is indeed, like developer said, "fitting" and enhances the atmosphere of doom and gloom that he was trying to evoke. The fact that the game keeps up with this doom and gloom atmosphere, relentlessly, with no type of visual relief, is pure art and my favorite thing about it. If the developer had added more colors and contrasting visuals just to take a break from this atmosphere I think the game wouldn't have been so distinct and bold as it is and I, for one, would have been disappointed by it. (I like how even the choice of dogs matches the color scheme of the game and the name of the breed, Prague Ratter, helps making reference to to the similar Dusk map, "Ratacombs.") I agree it may feel overwhelming if one is only looking for a more standard run-and-gun boomer shooter, but the depressing Cold War and nuclear fallout setting and lore is central to the game. It's like an auteur horror movie or game that doesn't let you catch your breath, just pure horror from start to finish, but with that carefree attitude and gameplay of a 90s boomer shooter.

      I can appreciate your take. Thanks for the comment and checking out the review. I do think the same effect could've been achieved with other colors that have been muted and dulled down. But hey, we can all have our opinions! Thanks again.

      @@SaltyOctopus Hey, man, thanks for replying and for the review. I see what you mean. Although I prefer the game exactly as it is, I also believe it takes a toll on the player, unlike Dusk (which was one of its main inspirations) which has a lot of variety, both in terms of level design and color palette. What I mean is, sometimes games that I believe are better and more artistic are less fun precisely because of their artistic prowess, they put too much effort in evoking a state of mind that we are not always in the mood for. Hrot's relentless brown, like some atmospheric horror games, is so immersive in its depressing atmosphere that it may become less fun than other games that focus more on the gameplay and being just fun. One example, for me, is Incision. Have you played it? I really liked the game, but the relentless horror and dread was a bit much fore me, so I have to play it in small doses. I guess I'm just better at handling an atmosphere of hopelessness and depression than body horror and dread, lol.

      @@arrrthurk actually I think HROT shows fantastic artistic style because accomplishing what the dev did is really impressive, capturing the old school look so well. It's such a great game, it was hard to find things I didn't like and the brown was an easy critique. That said it really wasn't "that" bad and I agree with your assessment. I have not played Incision yet, but it's on my list. I have a feeling I'll have a similar opinion on it's color palette as well. But we'll sell! It's on my list, but I have a huge backlog right now haha.

    The reason why everything is so dull and brown is because that is both symbolic and literal feel of the communism/socialism era on the east side of the iron curtain.
    If you feel fatigue, eyesore, winded, depressed, disoriented, at unease or uncomfortable by the pallet, good. That is exactly what you are meant to feel. This is what you would feel if you visited the eastern block in the 80s. Some parts of former eastern block still feel as depressing as ever. There are places where nothing still changed.
    This is the closest thing you will get to what life felt like in the if you were on the unlucky side of the fence. Of course it wasn't like this all of the time, not a rule without exceptions, people tried to live the best they could, but many would not like to return to those times, as much as nostalgic it might feel for the older generations.
