If you have never felt the weightlessness of falling in the pit and being picked up, it is like angels lifting you out of Hell. It is so tribally communal. Imagine losing your glasses and hat and after being picked up, asking (by tapping your head) and affixing invisible glasses only to have these unknown people hand them to you immediately afterward.

I remember an Emmure concert in a rather small venue and some guy letting us know he'd lost his contact lenses. CONTACT LENSES!
We found'em where the pit just was. I mean...needless to say he couldn't use'em any more but we found them still during the song!
Same concert we had a guy in a wheelchair in the pit and lemme tell you he was going at it!
Was one hell of a fun night!

so far, the closest thing i've ever had to a religious experience has been at a metal show, crowd surfing to the violin breakdown in The Black by Imminence. When i tell you that was like, genuinely fucking spiritual, i'm not kidding.
I was surfing folks and going surfing all night, told everyone i wanted to surf for that breakdown, they sent me up, and i just put out my arms, closed my eyes and let the crowd take me. It was freaking glorious.
also, lost my glasses crowdsurfing multiple times, and i have ALWAYS gotten them back. metal people really are the best

Metal absolutely saved my life, and continues to keep me anchored. While an undiagnosed, yet completely treatable medical condition stole my life from me, metal kept me going. And today, I have more hope for my future than I've had in 30 years. I have a clear goal, and I'm going for it, and the single most motivating thing I have is metal. I was very young when I first heard it and I was sucked right in. It felt like home.

Now I'm doing a lot better, and I have found a side hustle in the event industry, having had the privilege to work backstage for bands like Meshuggah, Saxon, Nestor, In Flames, Avatar. Johann Sebastian Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Liszt, etc. were the Metal Super Stars of their time. The music they created was louder, faster, more complex than anything that already existed. They mixed up the music scene and changed it forever for many generations. Especially Bach, who is called 'the father of music' created like a madman and people had trouble keeping up with his constant style and sound changes, and especially his infamous 'Toccata and Fugue D-Moll' played on a pipe organ does exactly the same as metall - it permits your bones and brain. Mozarts music was far more complex and loud than it was popular. Beethoven made music so complex and loud, he got deaf. And when Liszt promoted his piano pieces, he literally TRASHED his instrument and made the ladies in the public faint.
So, for those who can't do much with metal, try those guys. And for a more modern alternative, there are some interesting K-pop groups who experiment a lot with the harder genres. Be it Stray Kids who strangely speak to most metal head hearts (like mine) or Ateez who incorporate a lot of harder noise style in their music. Both groups are self producing (the first completely, the other mostly). Also, might be interesting non-metal experiences for metalheads.

And believe it or not Sir Christopher Lee was a metal head as well ( He discovered the music genre later in his life and fell in love with it. He collaborated with Rhapsody of Fire on a number of their albums. He also released some concept albums under his own name) Metal is for all ages, all walks of life ect. The only advice I give is remember to wear hearing protection at those concerts. Tinnitus ain’t such a cool thing to have. And most musicians wear ear plugs believe it or not. Also stay responsibility hydrated… 🎸🥁…… ⚛️☮️🌏

Sorry, I'm an old guy who listened to heavy rock all my life. I have Tinnitus for years and one can live with it, (yes, once, in a festival in the 80', I slept in front of the cabs when Black Sabbath were playing... only place I could lay down, there was nobody there, too much noise, but I was sooo wasted).
Somewhere, metal changed a lot ! But perhaps it's only society which is changing.

    • @danny-d0rito
      @danny-d0rito 2 месяца назад +2

@@pitfrr it did. it changed a great deal. and yeah, society has too. I can't say much of it is for the better, but it has changed. and will continue on that path.
but then, what fun would it be if everything stayed the same forever? I for one, quite like how metal has become much more then it once was. otherwise we wouldn't have gems like periphery, disturbed, and SOAD.
we do have to remember gems like Sabbath, Metallica, Slayer, and the others of the founding fathers of sorts.
but I would be lying if I didn't say I think it's beautiful so many people liked it so much they made twists on it until it became so much more then one small subset of rock. because of that, it is something to stand on its own now.
sorry for the madman rambling! glad you like the music so much and rock on.

I thought I'd just make some noise to spite them, so I put Pantera's Trendkill album in the stereo, chose track 7, maxed the volume, and sat on my bed. Metal, especially black metal, not satanic, nsbm stuff but mostly atmospheric, nature-themed stuff, helped me become a calm, mature, insightful, spiritually oriented person. Not just for me but for many people I know. I was recently discussing with a friend how it can be a strange bridge to our spiritual side. In my words, we saw that a common theme in metal music, "positive negativity," has a hazy connection to the Buddhism we are born with and often associate with. Another old friend of mine even became a Buddhist monk. He believed that inspiration from metal music was definitely one of the motivations for it.

Metal is after all, a sum of the extreme sides of existance and a reflection of the true human nature. Call it a musicalized version of shock therapy, because it shows you in a way how to cope with reality, rather than just close your eyes and cover your ears. By being shocking, terrific, evil, sad; Metal helps you accept life, with it's ups and downs.

Metal's negative image came from its early days with high profile icons having real issues with drugs and alcohol. People like John Bonham, Ozzy Osborne, and Nikki Six were legendary for their hard-partying. The argument can be made that it was all rock at that time (and still today as well), and that would be correct. However, metal and hard rock bands often went out of their way to be as rebellious and transgressive as possible, and thus cemented the negative image.

Metal did to me more than 2 years of therapy. I had to stay in a foreign country, more than I wanted to, cut from the support of my family and friends... I will not go into details, but I was in a tough spot with almost no one to turn to. From a colleague, I discovered a rock bar with karaoke events in my town. I found people who share similar interests, unironically enjoy my singing, and are glad to talk to me in English. Singing Paradise Lost, In Flames and Five Finger Death Punch was such an outlet for my emotions! Something I wanted for two years. It became better when I started singing something less karaoke-able - Kreator, Septicflesh, Adept, Cannibal Corpse. People started recognizing me by my voice and being really nice to me, although I'm just a random foreigner.

I've been a diehard metalhead ever since i was a preteen and found music like Linkin Park, Three Days Grace, Breaking Benjamin, Disturbed.
Still listen to all of that and FAR heavier shit now, but metal has ABSOLUTELY helped save my life and gotten me through some of my darkest times.
Music has always been my therapy, and metal has always been my go to genre.
I think part of it is that it's one of the few genres that treads into darker topics and themes on the regular and that has always meant that you can find catharsis in the music. But purely instrumentally, it really IS a great outlet for some of the more destructive things we can feel, like rage. Put that together with a community that celebrates a HEALTHY expression of aggression, things like pits, and yeah you get a genre that's actually super healthy and wholesome.
i mean, pits are a PERFECT example. From the outside they look so incredibly violent and aggressive, a bunch of people shoving each other around and violently smashing into each other. But that's the whole point. it's controlled chaos, where everyone gets to release that pent up shit they feel, but everyone is consenting to be there in that moshpit. And everyone in the pit knows that we're doing this TOGETHER, that this is a communal activity and the point is to let out your shit, but not to hurt anyone. So everyone takes care of each other, picks each other back up, and activities like that build these kind of bonds between people, even if they're fleeting, even if that bond only last for the duration of the show. Point is, it's a great way to let off some anger, but in a healthy way, and also one where you can connect to other people and feel a sense of camaraderie.
Plus, also, metal people are just some of the nicest people I know. We REALLY look out for each other at shows, try to take care of each other. Someone loses something, they'll nearly always get it back. we're just a bunch of misfits, building a community around our shared love of this music
It's just good freaking music and the people are mostly pretty great (at least in real life they are). like ABR says: angry music for happy people

Unpopular opinion: Though I love metal and probably owe my life to it, head banging is probably giving you CTE. Which might be partially driving your mental health issues to begin with. In my early teens I remember head banging till I got a headache. I spent 15 years head banging on stages in bands. Only to later find out that something as mellow as waterskiing can slosh your brain around enough to cause traumatic brain injury. I feel 99% sure my alcoholism and depression are a consequence of that. If anyone has evidence to the contrary, I would love to hear it. But it seems pretty likely to me. I only try to warn younger people of the potential risk. Outside that I whole heartedly agree.

Metal is a gift. People who don't listen to metal or appreciate it don't understand how therapeutic and cerebral metal can be. Also, there is so much diversity and flexibility in metal. Sometimes I want to gallop through the forest slaying dragons with triplets sounding my movement as I reach the end of time like Hammerfall or Dragonforce. Sometimes I just want some fun, in-your-face anthems like Iron Maiden or Edguy to free myself and get loose.
Metal can be brutal and technical with the right amount of flare like Slipknot or Trivium. It can be brutally beautiful like Dark Tranquillity or vintage In Flames. It can be relatable and reflective like Everygrey. It can be poetic and gothic like Kamelot. It can be infectious and furious like classic Metallica. It can be symphonic and mystifying like Nightwish or Stratovarius. It can be spiritual like Theocracy or Stryper.
Metal is for EVERYONE (Freedom Call, haha) because it's not about how we look or where we come from. It's about bonding over the love of real, powerful music, raw passion, and the courage to blast out our anger, frustration, and creativity through the instruments that weave our joy and sew up wounds that need a little more attention. Metal is a community of misfits and rebels who find commonalities and mutual sensibilities among each other in a world plagued by conformity and full of hatred and corruption. Some of the nicest people I've ever known are metalheads. Most of my experiences at metal concerts have been fun, liberating, and cathartic.
I wish everyone here love, peace, and METAL. . .Metal up!

So I get a bit of a different but related experience from metal. I feel more like I have excess happy but aggressive energy, overly excitable. It's not mania or anything to that level as I can tamp it down easily enough. But it can be frustrating when the external world seems a bit out of sync with my mood. Everything moving a bit to slow, a bit to gentle. Also as the energy is there it seems like a waste not to make use of it.
So metal is something I can make happen easily externally that matches that internal energy. I can find the lyrics interesting on occasion, though it's much more about the heaviness, tempo, vocal style, the amount going on all at once. Add in the crowd participation from a live recording and intensity is just off the charts. And if it changes tempo a lot, jumps genres a but here and there, then that amps it up even more which is why I love some prog songs.
Unclean vocals feel like normal vocals, but ratcheted up many notches. Plus vocalisations that are not words, or at least not clearly words, are far more interesting to me than standard singing. That's true whether it's pig squeals, yodelling or scat.
However when actually angry, upset etc metal doesn't do anything for me. I understand how it can for many, and I understand how a vocalist focusing on the subject of something you also struggle with can you feel seen, understood, like it's a shared problem, that someone with the same problem has succeeded in spite of the issue.
But because of my need for the happy overwhelming aggressive vibe I often gravitate to stuff that's heavy as hell but really fun, tongue in cheek, lyrically just straight up positive (there are exceptions)
So in short for me metal relates to a need for something external that has bouncing off the walls "I'M ALIVE!!!!" energy. There are other things that can do this. Being in a huge excitable crowd in a street festival, aggressive sex, the climatic violent but comical scene of a really good action packed film at the cinema, walking down a random road of a foreign city and seeing something amazing an unexpected. But none can be turned on or off quite as easily.

When I discovered Deep Purple and Black Sabbath in 1975, I knew the world for me would never be the same. Then later Kings-X, Morbid Angel and the plethora of 90's and to the present with White Chapel, wow... I'm starting to ramble. Rock on brothers and sisters of metal.

the metal community is a brotherhood, I have spoken with random people at various metal shows and found many things in common and learned lots of things. I don't think that happens with any other genres, imagine if you paid a couple of hundreds to a festival plus travel and accommodation to see some utterly unknown bands, you're a die hard fan, unlike mainstream pop music for instance. All these big bands are big for us, the fans, but commercially I guess we could only name very few that reached popularity To me, metal is pure joy and headbanging is the absolute form of freedom. I agree that most of the metal artists are very nice people with a deep philosophical understanding, but there are notable exceptions as well, but I would definitely say that you need to be in very good shape to keep rocking deep in your 50's or 60's as most of our metal idols are now.

I remember seeing Parkway and Thy Art back in the day. I was in the central pit of several and copped a solid kick to the hip, twisting my leg pretty badly and knocking me into the circle pit around us. Before even touching the ground two randoms had hold of me and kept holding on as we went around the pit until the end of the song. Madlads helped me out to some benches and checked on me before returning to the fun. Never will I forget that

I am getting used to say each time someone asks me why I listen to metal: As long as the music bangs, screams and roars, I don't have to. I just smile and headbang my spine off. It's therapy.

Metal has definitely helped me through some tough moments in my life. There is no equal of having it just burst through your body and take you on a spiritual journey. It doesn't matter if you are an Atheist or a believer metal makes you feel something that no religion can.

I am 61. I went to see Sabaton in the Cardiff International Arena last year. After Babymetal, I headed upstairs to the "quieter" toilets and tripped on the stairs, two huge tattooed monoliths caught me before I hit the floor. They kept asking if I was okay, even as I tried to reassure them that I had only slipped. You meet the nicest people at Metal concerts. If either of you read this, thank you very much.
