    Have you gotten an Airmatic warning light on your Mercedes Dash? Do you hear air leaking from your Air Suspension? Does one side of your Mercedes s class air suspension sit lower to the ground? If you have answered yes to most of these questions then you probably need to change your air suspension strut. The good news is that it's very easy to do and this video will explain how to replace your Mercedes Benz s class air suspension (airmatic / strut).
    I highly recommend replacing your Mercedes Benz air suspension (air strut/airmatic) with an Arnott industries AS-2605 (without 4matic) air strut for your Mercedes Benz S Class. Arnott makes a very high quality air suspension (strut) that's built to last!

    Easier thing to do in my opinion for adding the new fitting for the strut airline hose would be to twist it in by hand with the white part still in it then tightening it with a wrench, putting the air line in, then shoving it in (but gently) with a pair of pliers.

    Note to change a front strut both wheels have to be jacked up to get the old one out. To get the upper control arm free [down] tool 3/ 4" ball joint separator item 99849 at harbor freight works.

    • @rodcooper7095
      @rodcooper7095 Год назад

      Good point. I started with jacking up one side and once I had the ball joint separated, I could not push the upper control arm down far enough to insert the bottom of the air spring because the anti-roll bar was in a bind. Once I jacked up the entire front end, I was able to push down the upper control arm without the resistance. Another note, once installed, do not let the entire front end down or you will not be able to remove the jack. You must stop when the tires hit the ground and start the car to let the air springs fill with air.

    After researching its just better to install the airmatic delete kit.
    The system wears out like spark plugs and brakes. That's to much money to be spending over and over just to maintain a vehicle ride comfort but good video 💯👌🏾

  • @testuser3167
    @testuser3167 Год назад

    Thanks for this video - I'm sort of "inheriting" the maintenance on my mother-in-law's 2001 W220 because she has gotten tired of being charged what she thinks is extraordinarily high prices for repairs - so much so, that she's avoiding many problems, and ignoring some (like the leaking suspension) because the mechanic price to fix it is about $6K.
    She was thrilled to find the cost of a simple brake job (pad swap) was so low, as I ordered the pads and sensors online (local auto parts stores didn't stock them anyway), and insisted on watching me do it. She was also impressed at how easy and quick it was to do such a job.
    To be fair, the mechanic and the dealers are quoting her pricing to replace the entire air suspension, and from their business standpoint, they really can't afford to piecemeal such a repair on an older car, because if one component is bad, other components are likely to follow soon, and they don't want egg on their face by replacing one strut only to find "this is the same problem!" show up because of another strut leaking, or the compressor failing, etc.
    I don't yet know exactly where the leak(s) are on her car, but I haven't been able to get her to stop driving it long enough to check it out. There's not too many places it can be, since that system is really pretty simple, but hopefully, I'll get there before something worse happens.
    Unfortunately, her car has a much greater rust problem, so eventually, it won't be worth fixing, but I'll do my best to keep it safe enough to drive for her, as long as I can, because she has a deep emotional attachment to that car. (She does have another car, and most of the time, she can also drive the father-in-law's car too, but doesn't like to).

      Hello Adam N, I totally understand, but the Arnott's are a lot more reliable than the original air struts. I think they are worth the investment. Hello Bp P! Thank you for the kind words. I'm so glad that I can help people such as yourself :) In regards to your car. That's awesome that you found a great car with low miles. There is not too much information I can give since I am not there with you to buy the car and I would highly recommend getting the opinion from a qualified Mercedes-benz technician, however my advice would be to take it to your mechanic and inspect all of the suspension components like nuts and bolts then work outward to other things in the area where the sound is coming from. It could be something simple like a loose bolt, or something more moderate like a bad ball joint which is still an easy fix. If you know for a fact that you can fix the problem yourself, but you're just unsure at the present moment where the sound is coming from, then I would suggest renegotiating to a lower price and buying the car anyway. Then when you have the car you can start the troubleshooting process. Best of luck to you! Cheers!

    How did you know which to replace the air compressor or strut ? If I don't drive mine for about 3 days the front right sinks and eventually goes back up after about an hour, so to me points to pump or is the strut leaking... HELP..

    • @GarageDynamics
      @GarageDynamics  2 года назад +2

      Hello Kristian Figueroa, ABC uses a hydraulic pump system to control the suspension, so the car does not come with a air pump which is what's needed for airmatic suspension. The best thing to do would be to convert your car back to the ABC system that it originally came with. I would contact your local Mercedes Benz mechanic for the best options. I hope this helps. Thanks again for yet another great W220 tutorial! I was already able to repair my front armrest mechanism after stumbling upon your detailed video on that very subject. I previously thought I was supposed to replace the whole lid itself, but thanks to you I learned that was not the case at all. Just one question regarding this video - what was the approx. mileage when your front right strut's air bladder failed? Mine's an '05 and has already passed the 130K mile mark, so I'm thinking of replacing both front ones as a precaution, so i don't find her laying on her belly a couple of weeks/months from now.

      Hi Deyan Dyankov! Thank you for the kind words. I'm glad that you were able to make the fix to your armrest without having to replace the whole thing. I'm planning to make a follow up video for the it, so stay tuned! I have an 04 S Class and the suspension went out around 190k. The air pump went out first around 175k. Check the boots on your struts to see if they are cracked. If so, then dirt will work its way inside and start to eat at the strut bladder. Yeah, it's never a good feeling when you see your car sitting low because an air strut blew. haha! Best of luck to you! Cheers!

Start the car and press the button to raise the car. Once the suspension is filled with air and the car is high enough, I remove the jack and press the button for firm (sport) suspension setting. After 30 seconds or so I turn off "Sport suspension" and will take the car for a test drive. Hope this helps. Cheers!

    Hi I have a Mercedes R280 CDI and recently my mechanic told me that the noise heard from the front right wheel is from the airmatic shock absorber. It is not the stabilizer linkage.
    With 200,000kms he recommends me to change only the complete shock absorber when the air spring break.
    My question is: change 1 or the 2 front shock? what is this noise due to the pothole road pass, is there something loose inside the shock absorber?

    • @GarageDynamics
      @GarageDynamics  3 года назад +1

      Hello Ruben Fdez, From my experience, when an airmatic goes bad it makes a loud air hiss when it goes over bumps and potholes. If you hear a clunking sound when you drive then it's possible it could be the airmatic, or it could be other suspension components that have become loose, or the bushings in the suspension components have worn out. Usually they will make a clunking sound. Another sign that your airmatic is going out, is that you'll notice that your car will have normal ride height, but after it sits for a while the ride height will lower. You will also get a warning on your dash saying "Airmatic Visit Workshop". If you decide to replace your airmatic suspension, then I suggest checking both shocks to look for signs of wear. Maybe just one side got damaged and the other is ok. If both sides show heavy signs of wear, then if you replace one, the other will go out soon after. It's hard to give exact advice, so I advise you to follow the advice given to you by your local certified Mercedes-Benz Mechanic. I hope this helps! Cheers!
