All of you saying the om617/602/603/606 engines are superior, I ask you why, other than nostalgia? is it reliability? because the i6 OM648 is every bit as reliable as the previous generations, and doesn't suffer from head gasket issues or early 90's electronics issues as the older IDI engines did. its also more fuel efficient and much more powerful. i assure you my handle doesn't come from lack of experience. Ive owned an 83 om617(T) 300SD, 86 om602(NA) 190D, 91 om602(T) 300D, 99 0m606(T) E300D. i did all my own maintenance on all of them. I Own a 2005 E320 CDI, I've daily driven the car for the last 3 years and done ALL of my own maintenance. With the proper tools and the balls to work on the car yourself rather than taking it to the dealership, it is better in nearly every possible way than the previous generation Mercedes Benz diesels. And that's in no way knocking the older diesels. They all had their place in history and most were innovative technological marvels in their time as well. But when it comes to value, reliability, longevity, ride quality, safety, features, styling, rust prevention, paint quality, it's REALLY hard to beat an om648 E320 CDI. Now, Cue the naysayers that have never owned or driven a CDI. XD
Absolutely agree, it doesn't make sense. Why would you make a new engine worse ? it's illogical and that is why manufacturers don't listen to people and look at their data. Most people think based on emotion, not logical sense. The old diesels have 1 thing - reliability. The OM642 has more power (which means more fun and safer), quieter, smoother, better sound, better economy and it is reliable enough. Easy to work on. I am not going to drive a 70hp car because I don't want to replace a sensor from time to time.
h3xd3m0n absolutely. The om648 is nearly identical to the om606 when It comes to internals. It may actually be stronger since it puts out consiterably more power stock.
I'm from Germany and a Diesel Expert ;) My family owns 3 of the 320 CDI's but the V6, the engine is known as OM642! I changed the ECU on all of our cars from 224hp to about 270hp and they are running and running and running, even about 300.000km, which is about 187.000miles. If you got any questions about Diesel engines just leave me a message. I also own a V8-Biturbo Diesel Engine (OM629) Big respect for your videos, I'm an Mercedes addict and follow your content. Thanks for making these high quality Videos!
Hello m8 my dad owns a merc e320 cdi sport the same 0m642 engine the only major repair we had to do was the intake swirl flap motor and arm we switched the plastic arms for aluminum arms which we got machined from a cnc shop is it worth remappjng or just standard and do you get a mpg increase car has covered only 150k with stock engine and with ORIGINAL GEARBOX OIL, is it true the gearboxes are sealed for life im looking to get the oil changed as sometimes it holds in gear a little too long before upshifting
@@vaidasmatuliukstis6484 the 280 CDI were electronically "downtuned" in horsepower. So even less wear on the engine parts. (I think they made that for merkets where horsepower matters in taxes.)
I own a 2006 CDI. I get 40 - 42 miles per gallon doing 80 MPH on the highway. Great care. Do the scheduled maintenance on it. But sadly, they don't make diesels anymore. Well, at least not here. And after watching this, and this is 2021 now, I'm keeping it. Have had it since 06.
Well it is now Feb. 2024. Still own it. Did suffer from Black Death but got it fixed. So, back in 2022 got on the Natchez Trace Parkway I thought I'd see what fuel mileage I could get. It has a speed limit of 55 MPH. Now, I will admit I set the cruise control to 57 MPH. I literally got 57.6 MPG. I didn't start off with a full tank so to be cautious I pulled off, got some lunch and fuel. But had I had a full tank, I could have actually gotten over it on 7.708 gallons of fuel. Currently it has over 300,000 miles on it. Need a new headliner. The drivers seat has some wear and tear on it. And the front passenger seat need to have a bushing replaced. It seems this is a common occurrence with this model. I see looking back at the video, your door sills have come off like mine. While the satellite navigation still works, I'm not paying what they want for an updated disk, if they actually have them. Since it is now 2024, I use my cell phone for that. The only real issue with this model is the windshield. I'm on my fourth one currently. Seems the design is prone to cracking if hit by a rock tossed up by another vehicle. And when it does got hit, it only takes a couple of minutes to spread.
Scotty is like one chinese guy i knew from 20 yrs ago in college, who said the only good car on earth is his 1984 toyota tercel (carb) that he bought for $300.
@@thebrain526 Scotty is bitter old man who has been " entrepreneur" almost all his life, saves and makes money by fixing his and others cars. Looks like shit and lives in shithole and drives a celica. Anyone else who is doing fine and driving a mercedes or anything better gets his hate.
Sorry but imho Scotty is a poor old wrencher who knows nothing about modern technology in the cars, in his small bubble the best cars are 80s or 90s Toyotas or Nissans. Besides modern MBs or Beemers give him a late year LS 460h he could only change the tires on that beast, so no Scotty has no business in this field, if I didn’t fix my own Benzs I could still hire him to fix my 5 year old’s bicycle.
Mercedes-Benz W123 manufacturer from 1975 to 1986. was available as a turbodiesel with 119 horsepower. the diesel engine in the W123 is considered to be the most durable engine ever produced
Great video. I'm no mechanic but have travelled to many countries around the world and whenever I use a taxi, its usually a Mercedes E Class diesel so that must be a pretty good indication that these cars are built to last. Cheers, Jon from the UK.
@@LegitStreetCars it's funny thinking I'm all fancy in the states with my C300 and then going to Italy where I saw a (new model) E class wagon, c class, CLS wagon, and an older model Cayenne all working as taxis. I had a 1983 300CD 5 cylinder turbo diesel yeah it did all those common issues .. Black smoke ,engine truck noise 3 speed automatic. The best car I've ever owned! Mpg oh my! I’m so happy you bought this!! I have 2005 e320cdi and it has 319,000 miles original. Got it with 308k miles for $1200 I’ve put 2k into it and she’s good to go! It’s been an awesome car to work. Congrats man it’s an amazing car.
This rule goes for all Diesel Cars. Not just Mercedes. These were the best Diesel years. The last years before they had the Diesel Particle Filter or AdBlue.
But if you like these for accelerations and torque... Would you pax an insane tax for the old shitty ones? Why buy worn or cheap 2005 cdi when the scar taxrate goes through the roof every year? For Europe its differernt
I owned a 2005 e320 Cdi and it was the best car I ever owned! I modded mine with a tune from rocketchip, Amsoil fluids with archoil treatment and a custom mandrel bent exhaust with aero chamber mufflers. It would out run most stock German v8 sedans of the era! It got routinely 32-38 mpg! I also added bilstein heavy duty struts and shocks. I lowered the strut perch rings 3 notches for a slightly raked look. I added a custom grill also.

I own a relatively rare 2005 c320 (om642) cdi avant-garde with all the sport options and 290000kms making 240kw and 700nm. Biggest repairs was the gearbox oil pump going and the typical oil cooler seals. Absolutely loving every km.
I own two of these!! 2005 with 386,000 miles and an 06 with 35,000 miles. The 2005 has been to every Capitol in North America (excluding Hawaii). Seriously let me know if you want to know more about them and their story. Can’t wait to see what’s in store for your CDI!!
Strongly considering getting rid of my Prius for this diesel. Is there a particular year I should look for? This will be my first diesel purchase. - Thanks,
I own an 08 CLS500 with 200k miles on it and its just running fine .. had to replace the fuel pump , engine mounts , air conditioning compressor and some faulty exhaust sensors .. but other than that the car is just going fine and im surprised at people always saying that these cars break all the time .. its my fourth year owning it .
John Scarce actually ive done these when i got the car except for the exhaust sensor which was done two years later .. and considering the mileage its regular replacements and maintenance ..
I had the 5 cylinder 2.7 clk. It needed swirl flaps . 3 air flow meters 5 injectors. Catalitic convertor . It put me off for years but I now have a CLS 320 CDI and have owned it for a year with no issues at all
We have the same color e320 cdi with 252k miles. It's very comfortable, economical and reliable. One of the last real diesels. My personal car is a emissions deleted 335d which I'm extremely in love with. Trouble free the past 2 years of ownership. Not to mention close to 400hp and gets close to 40mpg.
The E320 CDI is definitely cool, but I was also thinking Alex should've gotten a 335d, if for no other reason than to add variety to his collection. One of the coolest diesel cars ever sold in the US imho.
I had a 2009 C220 CDI Avantgarde a while ago, 170hp and 400nm. LOVED it, had 270.000km on it but ran great. Fun to drive and i got around 55mpg despite a heavy foot.
I swapped my 645i for one, sound mad but that was pouring oil onto my driveway and basically needed thousands spent on it, thought I wouldn't get on with it but I love it, great car
Weeelll I've got a 99 E300TD with the OM606. Let me tell ya, this thing is amazing and sounds fantastic. I have 327516km's on it and it's still got a ton of punch! It surprised all my friends hahahaha. I'm a W210 E Klasse fan and it's nice to see the diesel Mercs get some love lol
Too bad Mercedes never brought the e420 cdi. Absolute monster, especially with a tune, 400+ hp and 700+ hp on a tune. Absolute sleeper. Shame, Europe stays getting the fun stuff
@@boyce1204 I mean that much is obvious. They demand safety so beltlines rise so people can't see. So they now have to have all these safety "features" that wouldn't be necessary. I don't see why car companies want to keep the EPA regulations, instead of voluntarily choosing to make cars better 🤷
Just bought one this week in Florida, awesome ride thanks for the hook up on this car. 2005 E320 CDI, 136624miles one owner flawless interior, rides better than my 2011 Audi A8L, freight train pull at highway speeds and. Got 41mpg at 70mph over 213miles on the ride home from Miami, Just amazing. thank you for your video.
I have a C200 2.2 turbodiesel from 2004. Same grey color. Chiped to 172hp. The thing is just solid. And accelerates pretty hard. Never had any problems in the winter. Just flip the key without pre-glow and starts emmidiatly. No smoke at all,but i drive it pretty sportive. Drives smooth and solid on the highway. And i love the casual look of it. From belgium btw. You see them around every corner here
Sorry to burst your bubble but it’s actually a stronger engine. Om606 has a few issues that were mostly rectified in the om613. But both have been tuned to well over 600hp so there both cool
MW yeah same here I’ve got two 606’s and I love them both they sound class 😎 and rev hard. Just a few things to fix then there reliable for 500hp and 6k rpm
I have a 2003 E270 which is a 5 cylinder diesel. I have owned the car for almost 10 years and it has done 208460 miles only ever letting me down once this year when a seal on a fuel injector failed. Also had to change the auxiliary battery which failed at the same time. This was the original battery from new, 15 years old. Still looks and drives great.
I've always wanted a 1998-1999 E300 (W210) with the OM606 engine. I've seen people in the Nordic countries get 450-600hp out of them with "super-turbo" setups. It basically used to be the 2JZ of Scandinavia 10 years ago. Also, if you would have done an Opel Ampera front and rear bumper conversion on your Volt, it would have looked killer. I plan to buy my dad a 1st get Volt (in white like yours) and getting a full Ampera bumper kit from DE next time I go.
I have this engine I'm my 05 w220 s class, an absolutely amazing engine, silky smooth, incredible torque, economical and just all out fun! Will never change it
Bought one last year, an 05 CDI with 84k miles. Now has 95k and we love it. Just put it away for the winter. Can’t wait to start driving her again when the roads are clear of salt.
My friend has a 2011 BMW 335d, in-line 6 cylinder diesel. Love that thing. The torque is unbelievable. It’s such an amazing car, fun to drive, comfortable.
I have an E320 CDCI estate, brilliant car. Keep an eye on the injector seals! Cheap and easy to fix. I change them as part of my routine service and never had any issues with them. Very common cars over here in UK
Hi. I'm from Romania Europe. I own a clk 220 cdi 2006. Never thought you would buy a diesel :)). Thumbs up for this diesel. Waiting for your next video.
of course you have an old right hand drive/ex taxi 220 cdi with 200k milers on clock that has been reversed 4 times and sounds like a tractor... after all you are Romanian

I have a diesel car too. Not a fancy Mercedes, but a 2007 Toyota Auris hatchback. Auris is about the same size or a little bigger than Toyota Yaris/Vitz or Corolla. Usually these types of cars come with a 1.6L diesel at 90 hp, but my car has the 2AD-FHV engine; a 2.2L diesel at 177 hp and 400NM of torque. I chip tuned it to 235 hp and 500NM. I also removed the AGR valve and a few other parts that are known to clog the engine with sot and hampers performance. This engine is the same engine that you find in different large Toyotas, such as the Avensis (slightly smaller than the Camry), Rav4 and Lexus IS 220D. So it's a fun car to drive and it feels a bit like driving a small fishing boat with a nuclear propulsion system in it. I can cruise up steep hills at 1500 RPMs as if it was nothing. It's no race car, but I can get it to go 0 to 100 kph in about 6 seconds if I launch it in second gear (I don't do that and don't reccomend it in any car) and the top speed is about 220 kph. No problems had with the engine so far, in the 11 years it has existed. Some problems with the car though, such as rust as the car is manufactured in England and I live in Norway where they salt the snowy roads. Other than that, an amazing car.
If it was a w123 300D om617, w124 300D or a w126 300SD id agree with you. This car however, just no imo lol. The oldies are the best, they were better built than anything built today and especially better than the mid 2000's.
I'm from Europe and I know quite well this W211 E320 CDI, the 6L and the V6. They both are great engines, V6 is a little bit more refined but it isn't a bad engine as you told. At least in the first years of the V6 production they didn't have urea and anything like that. Both engine are bullet proof. I hope to watch a lot of videos of this E320 CDI, great channel!
Hi Alex, I have a diesel Jeep Liberty, it was also only sold in the USA for 2005 & 2006 model years. The CRD Liberty is known for egr problems. If the benz has egr problems maybe a delete should be your first mod.
bought mine sight unseen with 92,000 miles from a MB dealer in Charlotte, NC in 2010. Absolutely love it! Have driven it from Virginia to Nevada and Arizona multiple times...306000 miles now. replaced the injection pump with a Bosch reman at 292000 miles after mine started leaking. Car went into limp mode on my trip to AZ last may...a shop in PHX said it was clogged up intake manifold due to EGR system and the intake flap motors....Please delete this baby so I can delete mine!!! Love the videos!
odd thing is that as soon as I left Texas on the way home, it stopped going into Limp Mode and has never repeated the problem again. I wonder if altitude above sea level is a factor. The land gets higher going west from Virginia.
Typically I don't like diesels, but you might change my mind with this one :) I live in Europe, Bulgaria to be precise, where the majority of cars today are German and these are really common here. The W211 looks very elegant.
I did my head lamps with 2000grid and then I polished with a battery machine. I taped the edges. Worked out fine. Just be careful not to polish to fast, the plastic can burn.
Dude I had a chance to buy a 2006 with 238k miles (video on my channel) at Mercedes auction earlier this year and it sold for 2600 bucks. Hammer dropped before I got another bid. Only issue I found during the test drive was a fault with hid headlights. I love how powerful those first original NON urea engines are! Sweet find bro!
LegitStreetCars had a fuel leak at IP, new clamp fixed it. Leak at thermostat, new clamp fixed that. Needed new fan ($350). 1 Black Death injector. Cracked front windshield but it’s not in my way so I’ll leave it. And I’ve changed most of suspensions joints and bushings. The tranny needs to be warmed up before it runs smooth but other than that she’s solid! With my new tires, I’m now into it total of $2800.
My dad had a W210 320 CDI. When he passed a few years ago it had done 590.000 km (366.000 miles). Engine ran super smooth and got 20 km/L when I road tripped it one last time before selling it.. Great car, miss it so much!
I had a -09 W204 320CDI 4Matic which was a v6 and only problem i had was a broken intercooler hose. I think the issues were common with the Bluetec engines. Was one of the best cars ive owned. Ton of power/torque and amazing grip with the awd. And 50hp more available with a tune.
I agree. The best car I ever owned. Mine was Obsidian Black. I only sold it because of moving overseas. Not so good on starting off on an icy road. The auto wiper tried turning on with a frozen screen too. Quiet, comfortable, fast and economical, what more do you want? This was in the UK
Of all of the Benzes we've owned (W126, W123, W124, W210, and now a W202 for our son, W204 and R170 for us), our 2 favorite Mercedes were diesels. A 1986 300SDL (fantastic W126 chassis and one helluva car) and a 1998 E300TD (W210 chassis and our favorite car ever). Alas, both of these diesels were totaled, but no one was injured in either situation. The only things holding me back on a W211 2005-06 diesel Benz is the early reports of the chassis having issues since they shared some parts with Chrysler (or not). However, it's the engine and tranny which are more important (at least to me). Great intro to a great buy, Alex. Cannot wait to see what you do to the car. Keep the shiny side up!
By 2005/2006 MB had replaced the OM648 with the OM642 for us here in Europe which was such a shame. The OM648 is bomb proof in comparison to the OM642. Better balanced, better fuel efficiency and with a remap, just as powerful. Having also worked at a main dealer up until last year, I can verify everything you say about the OM642. Luckily for us in Europe, we also have a plentiful supply of W210 with the OM613 engine which is also a great combination and available here in the UK for pennies. My daily driver for the last 7 years has been a 2004 W220 S320CDI and it has been flawless. 50mpg on a good run is not difficult. Prior to this car, my longest lasting daily driver was 2 years. I chopped and changed very regularly, usually every few months. I can't find anything worthwhile to replace my W220 with the OM648.
@@pierrechristen9025 in Europe, yes. The OM648 engine is much better. Easy for anyone to distinguish, the OM648 is the last of the straight 6 diesel engines before MB went to the V6 OM642 which is troublesome. Interestingly, MB has recently replaced the OM642 after more than 10 years of service in many different models and replaced it with another straight six. MB made a lot of money out of parts and labour by fitting the OM642 engine to everything...good business move even if the engineering was poor!

Wujek Mike it is. I've owned every Diesel variety from Benz since 1983 -2008, except the rod bender 603, and the CDI is without a doubt the best. It's not just the engine though, the om648 pared with the late model 722.6, and the 211 chassis is a match made in heaven. It's perfect.
@@MBDieselFreak It might be the best driver's diesel since it's way more smooth, but to be honest a V6 CDI costs way more to maintain. My dad had e300td from 94' and he didn't touch the engine for at least 5 years. I had an e270 cdi 01' and clk320 cdi tbh they had more problems like: injectors getting stuck, tip-tronic gearbox having problems with the driver(only automatic avaible). W211 is a solid car, but not one from the early production years before they fixed ABS pumps and such.
Wujek Mike the CDI has the inline 6 om648, not the V6 OM642. the older cars are fantastic, don't get me wrong. But when it comes to safety, features, ride quality, handling, and comfort, it's hard to beat the Om648 CDI. Here in the states SBC isn't an issue, it's warrantied by dealerships until 2030.
I loved my 1994 w124 e320 (gas). The build quality was legendary and I really like the way it drove as well. My 2007 w211 e320 (diesel) was reliable but the seats were uncomfortable and it wallowed like a Ford Crown Vic. I kept both for 10 years and 200k miles. The more reliable was the 211 but the better driver was far and away the 124.
Earlier this year I bought my first Mercedes -- a decently cared for 1998 E300 Turbodiesel with a little over 200K on the odo. Everybody who rides in it is surprised that it's a diesel because it's so quiet inside! I love how it smells like an old library inside.
@@codaily monoblocks don't look good on any newer Mercedes. They only look good on the square shaped cars. Hi from the UK, I had a W211 2003 model (first of the line) E320CDI about 8 years ago. The interior had a wonderful ambience about it & for a turbodiesel it was very fast. In fact I seem to remember Mercedes quoting that it churned out more torque than their 5 litre V8 gas engine at the time. Just a sublime car. The best auto transmission I've ever experienced. The best car I've owned to this day.
It'd be cool if you did some DIY's on working on the diesel engines. Do you need a whole new set of specialized tools for them? How reliable are the fuel injectors?
Not too familiar with merc diesels I’ve worked on a few of them but I don’t know them as much as I do about Vw diesels In general diesels are no harder to work on and don’t require special tooling specifically for diesels unless you are getting into rebuilding injectors and pumps (which you would need for petrol engines anyway) obviously most German cars do require special tools but that’s just german cars in general As far as emissions stuff goes the dpf and egr isn’t as much of a concern as it’s made out to be BUT diesels need to be driven to burn off all the soot that collects so if your only gonna do short drives go a petrol car which is also where the real savings come in they don’t like start stop traffic they like open highways for example my Passat was sitting around 14l per 100km in traffic the other day where normally on the same run it would be closer to 5-6l per 100km The other issue is all the extra sensors that are fitted especially on newer diesels if you want to do your own maintenance you need a good computer not just torque pro. For Vw I’d used ether vagcom or e-Odis as both will allow coding of injectors and help to find sensors that have failed rather than just giving a generic code As far as injectors go they are usually pretty good in saying that on newer diesels they do have to be coded into the system and are very expensive compared to older style injectors
Straight six diesel Mercedes? Sign me up! I thought they were all V6s after 2000. Although how do you think this compares to the BMW M57 motor in the 335d? I’ve heard that’s a pretty stout engine too, the internals sure are strong if nothing else.
You've just got another UK subscriber ,owning and dealing in Merc diesels for 30yrs, bloody good videos you talk a lot of sense. Regards from an old Limey b from across the pond.
I can't talk for all of Europe but in the uk we only had these cars for 2 years too, they started in 2003 and stopped in 2005 though. Midway through 2005 we got DPFs added and in 2006 v6 engines with 7g-tronic transmissions.
Had a e320cdi 2003 saloon it was fantastic. It came down with the three faults this car is plagued with ie alternator, cooling fan failure and sbc brake warning message. Fixed all three and kept the car up to 170,000 miles without a problem, with 55mpg on a run and very quick when I needed it. I loved the car, but sold it for a 2009 e320cdi estate, which is sublime and very well specced. You are right about the the mpg, I can only get about 42mpg on a run vs 55mpg from the older straight six. Anyways a great video and keep spreading the word, it's a brilliant car. 👌👍👏
I own an '06 CDI....purchased new in July 2006. Currently have about 73K miles on the clock and it has been bullet proof. Trip computer has reported as high as 42.5mpg although as measured at the pump, the car has returned as high as 38.5mpg. I've recorded every fill up on www.fueleconomy.gov. Overall, with mostly city driving over the past 12 years, the car has returned an average of 28 mpg. I'm going on more road trips lately. I'll report back my experiences.
Tearanew - sorry bro. 73k miles is nothing earth shattering, even for a gasoline engine. Come back when you have over a half million “bullet proof” miles.
@@ttocselbag5054 - I agree that the total mileage on my car is nothing. But age also has its impact, as I'll discuss below. Fuel consumption is remarkable. I drove from Washington DC to Montreal on less than one tank of fuel. In October, I drove from DC to Bar Harbor, ME....again less than one tank....730 miles.....and still had at least 50 left. As for reliability, over the 12 years I've owned it, I had a transmission leak and steering rack leak pretty much when new. Later, at about 6 years, I had a glow plug go bad so I replaced all of them. Apart from that, tires and battery, that's it. And keep in mind....cars do age...even if you don't drive them a lot. Being garage kept helps a lot. I plan to hold on to this one until the wheels fall off! I especially like the fact that its a cast iron straight six. A more traditional layout for Mercedes (and other German manufacturers). And it doesn't have Bluetec which I understand had proven to be troublesome. And i can burn 500 ppm Diesel if need be. Can't do that with a Bluetec.
@@Tearanew -- I agree with you about age bro. It does have impact as well as mileage. Also agree about the Urea, diesel emissions fluid (DEF), Bluetec thing. It's all overkill environmental garbage lobbed at the most efficient internal combustion engines ever produced. I could go on a long pro-diesel rant but I won't. Long live your diesel brother and drive it till it's dead (which might actually come after you perish). HA!!
It’s more tiresome to an engine to be used for short commutes, even if they gather less mileage. I drive about 40 miles twice a day with my two litre diesel A6. I preheat it with Webasto and then run it for an hour in optimal operation range. Then I do the same in the evening. I drove my last A6 to about 300 000 miles. This 2010 model has 140 000 miles on it now.
I had a 2004 E320 cdi Avantgarde with all extras at the time (DVD, Nav, pan roof, 17” wheels, phone in the armrest). It was our first family car once my first daughter came along, and sold my 996 turbo for it. I still miss that car as an excellent all rounder.
I have a 2016 Ram 3500, and i deleted the egr, dpf and def at 250 miles on the clock. I didn't care about losing the warranty as I'd rather not have a clogged dpf grenade my cummins. You're right to avoid the bluetec!
@@DSKSeattle Shows how much you know. Did you know the dpf is cleaned by burning extra fuel through the system? Plus my mpg went up by a about 3. My truck isnt any worse for the environment its actually probably about the same.
What also makes this car even more special is the straight 6 engine. "Car D. Ologist" has a channel all about this car. I'm so excited to learn more about Mercedes Diesel. Thanks for sharing.
@@yant8777 You are not right... Finnish drifter Teemu Peltola aka blacksmokeracing destroyed every om606 engine he had and he broke many many engines. Now that he has a 320cdi he has done 2 full seasons with the same engine and after that it was still in fairly good shape.
Om60x engines are dieing from not proper cooling(oil, water),too high egt,or revving too high with the stock internals.if you keep these under controll, and give the engine good oil, there's literally no way to kill it. I know many people pushing 3bar into it and doing so for several hundred thousand km's. The best I ever know bought his car with 475tkm's,modded it shortly after.now he has 750tkm in it,and still running good.
I once had a '99 Turbodiesel with 280k miles on it until it got in an accident. Was the best car I ever had and I'll miss it. Now I have a '91 350 SD. It's got 180k miles. I love the old Mercedes diesels. They seriously are amazing. Absolutely amazing.
I have a 99 E300 Turbo Diesel. (W210) It is the best car I have ever driven. It is a 5500 pound luxury sedan that gets 40 mpg on the highway. It has more than enough power and drives smooth as butter. It is so smooth and quiet that you really have to watch your speed because you will be doing 80+ before you realize it. Mine just hit 211,000 miles and still drives amazingly. My only complaint is that the rear window regulators go out frequently and are expensive to repair. ($315 a piece for me)
I have the same CDI. LOVE it, but have to part with it because I do not commute by car anymore. It is a beast. I have 93k on it, it gets close to 40MPG at 80MPH and outruns most gas cars.
I own a 2006 E320 CDI bought new....and now has just turned only 80K miles. (I don't drive much and have several cars.) I've always been a diesel freak and I bought this one after spending time in Europe driving a 2000 Alfa Romeo 156 2.4 JTD. The Mercedes has really been great. I use it only for long haul drives. Usually getting around 40 mpg. Among the minor issues is the blower on the a/c had to be replaced after 6 years. And it's starting to go again at the 14 year mark. Also, I had a steering rack replaced under warranty and also a minor transmission leak when new. Other than that, it's been flawless. It's been garage kept all its life so it looks spectacular. I have a new Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, which I love, too. But for long hauls...I'm in the E320.
It is hands down. 7000rpm and 600+ hp on stock internals. You can check out the dieselpumpuk channel. No wonder they swap out those garbage common rail engines for om60x.
Blitzkrieg come on pal you honestly think a stock 606 is gonna stand that abuse for any amount of time? It won’t! Most big power 606’s on here are dyno queens
Can't really make any 177hp engine too reliable with over 600hp on stock internals. BMW common rail diesels are great, especially the 35d but not too keen on common rail mercedes diesels..
Nayel Elkiki yeah anyone able to elaborate on this? I wonder whether this also applies to the the UK model as Sensotronic Break Control (SBC) pump failing is a common fault and is very expensive to fix too. I have an E320 CDi which has been showing the SBC (also ESP & ABS) warning light for last couple of years and still drives fine. I’m seriously dreading the moment the red warning light flashes and the car is immobilised due to the SBC failing completely.
Nayel Elkiki The warranty in Europe is 30 years. It works by always being serviced by a dealership - once every two years. It's a fail to start and corrosion warranty.
iVlogBuzz The 25 year warranty does not apply to UK. I contacted MBUK who were unaware of this. They checked my vehicle registration and informed me that there are no recalls on the SBC. They were also unaware of the extended warranty recently announced in US. Typical...!!
@@anonymous4201 I'm in the UK and used that said warranty many years ago buddy when I had a C320 V6 that had a MAF meter fail, it also covered body work too, by the time I got rid it was touching 200,000 miles with only ever having the MAF fail. It's still on the road today and the bodywork is still excellent considering it was bought in 2001.
XD

@@MrEsaleniuc That and the fact that the actual build quality of the cars went to shit after mid-nineties.
Can you push 600whp without opening the engine?
h3xd3m0n absolutely. The om648 is nearly identical to the om606 when It comes to internals. It may actually be stronger since it puts out consiterably more power stock.
I'm from Germany and a Diesel Expert ;)
My family owns 3 of the 320 CDI's but the V6, the engine is known as OM642!
I changed the ECU on all of our cars from 224hp to about 270hp and they are running and running and running, even about 300.000km, which is about 187.000miles.

I want to buy e220CDI, what year I should buy?

The E320 CDI is definitely cool, but I was also thinking Alex should've gotten a 335d, if for no other reason than to add variety to his collection. One of the coolest diesel cars ever sold in the US imho.

I had a W220 with the 204 3.2 Diesel engine. Amazing engine and tuneable. 38 mpg in a 2 ton car!
bought mine sight unseen with 92,000 miles from a MB dealer in Charlotte, NC in 2010.
I've got a 2005 Jeep Liberty CRD. The engine is a VM Motori/Benz 2.8L Turbo Diesel. Love it.
Typically I don't like diesels, but you might change my mind with this one :)
I live in Europe, Bulgaria to be precise, where the majority of cars today are German and these are really common here.
Thanks! I missed one at auction too but glad I did. Really bad hail damage car that went for $2,500 plus fees.
LegitStreetCars i bought mine with 308k for $1200. I think might have you beat (;
Don't spend too much. These guys are buying overpriced vehicles which is making the used car market primed for a collapse aka correction.
@@kidwithaviolin Wow that's really good. What the story though, haha.
Ok we know the engine is bulletproof but how's the transmission? Looking to buy one but worries about the transmission.
I'm going to buy myself a E320 in the new year, Tones of them here in the UK! Great video Alex 😊
Did you get one? , I have one and I love it. Had it since 2012 :-), the engine is incredible.

Hi, so the E320 CDI before 2005 are better then?
@@pierrechristen9025 in Europe, yes. The OM648 engine is much better. Easy for anyone to distinguish, the OM648 is the last of the straight 6 diesel engines before MB went to the V6 OM642 which is troublesome.
Interestingly, MB has recently replaced the OM642 after more than 10 years of service in many different models and replaced it with another straight six.
MB made a lot of money out of parts and labour by fitting the OM642 engine to everything...good business move even if the engineering was poor!
Thank you, that's exactly what I wanted to know.

No way this CDI is better than an om606 w124 E-Class.
Wujek Mike go buy one and then decide. These cars are hard to beat. 800mile fuel range, 40mpgs 369lbs of torque the list goes on..

Not too familiar with merc diesels I’ve worked on a few of them but I don’t know them as much as I do about Vw diesels
In general diesels are no harder to work on and don’t require special tooling specifically for diesels unless you are getting into rebuilding injectors and pumps (which you would need for petrol engines anyway) obviously most German cars do require special tools but that’s just german cars in general
As far as emissions stuff goes the dpf and egr isn’t as much of a concern as it’s made out to be BUT diesels need to be driven to burn off all the soot that collects so if your only gonna do short drives go a petrol car which is also where the real savings come in they don’t like start stop traffic they like open highways for example my Passat was sitting around 14l per 100km in traffic the other day where normally on the same run it would be closer to 5-6l per 100km
The other issue is all the extra sensors that are fitted especially on newer diesels if you want to do your own maintenance you need a good computer not just torque pro. For Vw I’d used ether vagcom or e-Odis as both will allow coding of injectors and help to find sensors that have failed rather than just giving a generic code
As far as injectors go they are usually pretty good in saying that on newer diesels they do have to be coded into the system and are very expensive compared to older style injectors
My dad owned a e270 w210 (5cylinders in line) and its amazing ... 240km/h, sale at 400k km and still run
Straight six diesel Mercedes? Sign me up! I thought they were all V6s after 2000. Although how do you think this compares to the BMW M57 motor in the 335d? I’ve heard that’s a pretty stout engine too, the internals sure are strong if nothing else.
I wish all auto manufactures would use more inline 6 configurations in general, such a perfect design.

I can't talk for all of Europe but in the uk we only had these cars for 2 years too, they started in 2003 and stopped in 2005 though. Midway through 2005 we got DPFs added and in 2006 v6 engines with 7g-tronic transmissions.
I would like to se a mpg test, before you do any Work to the car, just to have a point of referance.
Great idea
Marco Barichello Yes, F the environment, right? Your kid’s generation don’t need to breath healthy air.
@@DSKSeattle Shows how much you know. Did you know the dpf is cleaned by burning extra fuel through the system? Plus my mpg went up by a about 3. My truck isnt any worse for the environment its actually probably about the same.

And plus the common rail engines are actually a better engine in every way and make more power reliably 😉
Can't really make any 177hp engine too reliable with over 600hp on stock internals. BMW common rail diesels are great, especially the 35d but not too keen on common rail mercedes diesels..

Can you explain the 25 year factory warranty
Nayel Elkiki yeah anyone able to elaborate on this? I wonder whether this also applies to the the UK model as Sensotronic Break Control (SBC) pump failing is a common fault and is very expensive to fix too.
I have an E320 CDi which has been showing the SBC (also ESP & ABS) warning light for last couple of years and still drives fine.
I’m seriously dreading the moment the red warning light flashes and the car is immobilised due to the SBC failing completely.
Nayel Elkiki
The warranty in Europe is 30 years.
