Bought the Piranha from a friend back in 2015, And no matter how many times I changed my rig, I always keep coming back to it. A bit tricky to dial in a perfect live tone but it is there. As for recording; whatever you dial in just sounds great.
Wooooow... the best tone so far, from all your rack units...
Built in speaker emulator is not so bad as you mentioned. There is some tricks that helps to improve cabsim sound, i actually found them in manual.
1. Add little reverb to add “cabinet box resonance” feeling
2. Use parametric mids in range of 2.1 - 2.9 instead of treble when you need more high tones (treble knob should be lower in this case)
I also haven’t been satisfied with xlr output for the first time recording, but this tricks helps me. I can’t say it will makes it sound great but it will be a good analog cabsim sound...
THe Piranha tones killed me. They ate me alive.
Thought I'd just dip my toe in the water with this one.
I bought one rite when they came out after getting rid of an ADA MP-1 and sent it rite back. Didn't fit my rig although i didn't boost any amps back then and didn't want to as a Midi rack just press one button. Got an ADA MP-2 and was perfect! Was running a Digitech Mosfet G300 poweramp tho. Great video!
I bought the Piranha new and it was my main pre through the 90's and mid 2000's. I had it going through a VHT 2/50/2. The Piranha outlived my (disappointing) VHT GP3 Valvualtor preamp.
Nice! Loved the Gary Moore bit especially! He was a big influence on me back in the mid 80s.
Hi Leon, do you remember what your delay settings were on this? You have a great mix of raw guitar tone coming through with an awesome delay setting on the back. Thank you and Cheers!
una abbonende more my friend :) i got every tube preamp you can imagine and the rocktron stuff is by far my favourite
Nice... I had a couple different versions of the chameleon preamps. I use the rocktron velocity 100 LTD with my helix currently. They make solid gear. I've never had any complaints about them.
Yeah my intellifex still runs perfectly, solid stuff
man I wish this kind of rack preamps would make a comeback :( you should try out the ENGL E530 btw, it's amazing
When I switched back to amp heads I kept only one tube preamp from my good ole rack... the piranha... great demo
Parametric mids FTW
I owned all those same units - too cool. The Piranha was excellent and I had a ball with it. Tis all most 90's stuff there though. LOL.
Very cool .. I guess because I'm old I don't get the scooping the mids thing? In a live band the audiance would hear mostly bass and drums. Guitars need mids. 😂 The more the better. 😂 Give me that Boston or Stryper tone anyday, or Schenker, etc, but too each their own. 😉
Great vid. I'll have to keep an eye out for one to play with.
Funny you should say that. I'm in the process for redoing my rig because I couldn't hear myself on stage with all the digital effects and whatnot.. had to bring back the piranha for the sweet mids. There's a lot more to this preamp than whats shown in this video. Great vid nontheless
Just sold the Triaxis, but I keep the Piranha. Great unit, really great👍
Really tight.
I had one of them when I was living in Perth in the early 00's, had a killer tone going through a Signal Station power amp and dual 4X12's with an Intellifex in the loop. Wonder if it's my old one????
Who did you sell it to? Can't be many around!
Great amp! This is what Mick Thomson used on Slipknot's self-titled (ran into a Mesa power amp).
Hi, Leon! Piranhas are a group of freshwater carnivorous fish. They inhabit some rivers in South America, especially in Brazil. In Portuguese, the correct name is spoken similarly to the Spanish language "piraña". In Portuguese the letter "h" sounds like "i".
Hi there. Can you please tell me where are you keeping the input and output knobs? I'm having loads of trouble dialing in my tone with this bugger.
Have you made an axe-fx III preset to match the Piranha preamp yet?
The Piranha sounds killer. Would love to see a video about the Prophesy.
As would I. I wonder if any made it out this way.
I've had those all except Piranha.
JMP was ok but Peavey was over nasal. Piranha seems to be washing those two.
Different strokes for different folks. But the Peavey sounded nasal to me also.
What was the gain setting on both clean channel demonstrations?
Very nice! If I remember correctly Judas Priest used to use these. I used a Rocktron Voodoo Valve Witch Doctor that was amazing!
Didn't know that, that's pretty cool.
@Kenny H Pain of Salvation too. Of course KK Downing and Glenn Tipton toured with the Rocktron Piranha for Jugulator and Demolition
Yes , They used it on Ram It Down album if I remember from reading one of the guitar mags from the era.
Wow, great playing and that amp brings back memories. I have a couple of Rexx preamps that are awesome with so much sound shaping, also a four tube Kitty Hawk Quattro which is fantastic (just wish the hot lead....or is it leed?? (6am) was quieter) perhaps you could demo one of these some day?
Woah, you have a Kitty Hawk! Would love to try one of those but I have no idea if any made it to Australia.
seven 🤘
Don't know if you've done it but how about demoing the JMP-1 and the Peavey Rock Master.
Soon!
What foot switch you use for piranha ?
Another cool one is the Lee Jackson Perfect Connection GP-1000. Not flexible, really just one great sound and needs a boost for solo's. I picked one up over 20 years ago when no one wanted rack preamps. Since then I have had a MP-1 (too thin), I had a Rockmaster (too fizzy and artificial) but the GP-1000 has stayed because it sounds more real (IMHO). ALL THE MIDS!
Been on the lookout for a Lee Jackson pre forever! Rockmaster does the 5150 chugga chugga stuff well but is a bit brittle for leads IMO.
Had the Chameleon - served me well for heavy stuff back then!
Did the chameleon have effects too?
@@LeonTodd Yes it did. Had just the chameleon into a Mesa 50/50 into a kitty hawk 4x12. That was 1996...
And by the way - I know of a famous russian guitar player (which I cannot name) you used the chameleon on almost all albums instead of the amps he was endorsing lol
@@berndkiltz sounds about right!
The chameleon was awesome. I've had a few, did a video on the chameleon 2000. Great pre amps for the mid/late 90s. Cool fx too.
The Bypass channel sounds best on these! ;)
Hahaha!

Trouble with the Piranha is that to have a good clean tone, you need to turn the input gain knob way down, but for a good high gain tone, you need to turn the input gain way up
HUSH !!!
Hi Leon. Could you share with your MESA RECTO settings? cheers
Crank the bass and treble, set the mid frequency to 600hz ish and scoop it out
@@LeonTodd thanks. I understand that MID FRQ: 600Hz ok. but how about BASS (0-15)?, MIDDLE (0-15) ? TREBLE (0-15)? please answer. thank you.
@@satarello I have no idea on the specifics, too long ago!
@@LeonTodd aaaa ok :) I understand. btw thanks
Try this. Bass 10, Mids -4 @650hz, Treble around 0
Had one for a minute.....found it to be too fizzy, got rid of it. There's a $1000 mod offered for it, to fix that issue.....replaces a bunch of low grade parts with high grade parts. Wish I kept mine and did this, but at the time it just wasn't worth it. Istill wonder what a modded out Piranah could do and sound like.
Who did the mods? Curious
pickup selector upside down... ;o)
Can i connect it into my amp effect loop for poweramp ?!?!
Yes.
Leon Todd But it have 2 output left and right ?!?
My amp only have 1 return socket
@@puttipongpojanavorapongs1557 just run one of them into it.
Thanks you so much!!
Surprised, I was thinking here we go with another crappy sound. I mostly prefer tube head amp most of the time btw. Really surprised.
had to swing my booty to the last funky dunk
The Piranha is the signature sound of the band Nightwish , all rhythm and lead done using this pre ! Sounding good man ! Get your ADA MP1 3tube mod yet ? DO IT !!!

Nothing in there is late 80's Son ..it's all 90's stuff ;-)
@Kenny H The Piranha came out in the 90s. Priest didn't use it until Jugulator. They had Rockmans in the 80s
Slipknot? Anybody?
Yup
You have a really exaggerated vibrato on leads.
