He's a gainiac, gainiac on the floor
And he's rockin like he's never rocked before.
Man you broke out all the 80's in this one!
Bryan adams, movie soundtrack hits!
you beat me to it 😂
😂they really went all out on the front panel! It looks like the front panel of an 80's arcade machine, tacky but I love it.
I still think the ADA Mp 1 is the king if rack units. IMHO.
Dude, you do the alternate fast picking Paul Gilbert thing better than anyone except Paul. 😂🤟.
Your legato is awesome too.
It does remind me of a metal zone. It sounds pretty identical to one.
Thanks Brian. You rock man!
Yet another great video from you and this channel .
Have a great day everyone and better week..
Tim..
Too kind bro! Intense Rock is my bible
The cleans sound really good! I like the Bryan Adam's in there. " gonna run to you" . Very nice sir!!!
I used a Rocktron rig for years. It was the most acrobatic rig I ever had, with 2 midi controllers, 2 preamps, 2 pedals (original chameleon and a 2000) and a couple of 4x10 cabs... I just got tired of hauling it around:)
I'd buy one just thinking I could sound like you. Gainiac's just went up in value after this video.
I just saw one on Reverb for $99. So far... lol
Always great playing. Always great demo. Not-so-great unit. I remember these things. Nobody I knew ever used one.
I have to say you can play for days gone by, I love the passion you bring with your content. Thanks for all your hard work.
I appreciate that!
I'm a big fan of Rocktron! Still using the Rocktron Prophesy II and Voodoo Valve as my backup rig. Love those British tones and endless possibilities for fx and cab configs. I busted the tube in the Voodoo Valve and they sent me a new one for free!
Cool👍 I personally like Rocktron preamps.
Love the maniac riff, Do a complete version plz
I like the Ganiac 2. Good demo!
Good god that sounds great
it got a snarl to it, which i like. could be a little much in some instances.
low end could use some tightening up with the 7-string, but which amp doesn't nowadays except sth like the mark series.
Thanks Leon, always nice to get to know stuff i never knew about before watching your vids!
yeah. it's not bad at all.
but also yes at the mark series amps being tight right out of the box. i simply don't understand how any company doesn't make their amps tight like that
@@cunjoz i think its mainly because of costs. the mark series is pretty complex, two or more eq-sections, switchable power per channel, lots of modes. Also i feel like amp-manufacturers are pretty much stubborn in their mindset towards amps (don't have to be a bad thing if the product is good)
Marshall is probably pretty happy they still can sell 800s for more money than the complex jvm series. Same for Peavey with the 6505. Those amps just work and only few are voicing complaints as its pretty easy to just through an OD in front to tighten things up.
I must confess it's the same for me.
I'd rather buy an amp thats 90% there for 1k and put and Od in front to be 99%, instead of paying 4k (where i live) for a Mark Series which is tight out of the box
@@aaaargl you do have a point
I had an original gainiac and also a voodoo valve. I remember being disappointed with the gainiac but the voodoo valve was awesome.
It does the 80a well. It just has that distortion with a lot of compression, you can play sync an Park with it.
Another piece of rack gear I'd never heard of. Doesn't sound bad. Not spectacular, but definitely not bad.
This is the proof that pitch detune will make anything sound better and more enjoyable in an instant. Love me some grease!
YES
It dose sound like my now defunct JMP1.. My friend had one. We thought the tone none sounded way better running into the clean Chanel. Fun piece of gear.
I kinda like it...feels like a rockman or gallien kruger knockoff
I remember when having racks of gear was the thing back in the day. I bought this pre when it came out. I returned it the same day, being completely disappointing. Ended up buying a used Mesa Triple Rec from Guitar Center the following month and sold off most of my rack gear. Haven’t had a single regret since. Cool video!
Long live the Recto!!!
It sounded pretty cool for that scooped rhythm guitar tone. It probably isn’t worth it for the rack space that it would take up though.
I tried a used Peavey Rockmaster preamp about 10 years ago and we did not bond, so for sale it went.. lol
Great review Mr. Todd.
I liked their voodu valve and piranha preamps.
Piranha goes hard hey. Really want to try a VV.
Probably the 12ax7 is connected like on the Voodu valve. Just on triode and very very low voltages and it just adds a bit of gain on the input.
"but it has tooobz!"
"just on triode". Yes, I think it's very likely that the 12ax7 is connected as a triode, considering that it's a twin triode tube. Were you maybe thinking of power tubes such as EL84, 6L6, etc., which can be "triode connected" as an alternative mode to their regular (tetrode or pentode) modes?
@@satanbane a 12ax7 has 2 triodes. Just one is connected. Just hslf tube is connected (st least on the vooddu valve)
Sound very good. What post effects you use on clean on 7:35
The song remaind me to "Maniac" by M.Sembello, "Flashdance" movie soundtrack. Very eighties!
Yup, I am sure that's what he was going for. Hence the word: PUN.
That's the one!
I knew it!!!!! Best pun EVER!!!!!! (I am a GenX child of the 80s and fully approve)
Hey Leon, if you're still interested in trying out a Digitech GSP1101, the prices have doubled since I bought mine back in 2015 or 2016. Haven't seen many for sale online, but the few that are out there go for about $400 US at least, some are like $500. If you're interested I would get one now before they get scooped up. And, this was a pretty interesting video because I've never actually heard one of these before! Don't think these have aged very well. Seemed to sound descent with the strat. The eq just doesn't sit right with my ears.
Great video mate. I've been curious about the rocktron preamps and now I don't have to waste money to answer the question. Even through the preamp sounds extremely average your playing was rad
Actually, Gainiac 1 sounds better than 2, at least that is my impression after having both. 2 is kinda more hissy. I still have the first one, wonder if it still works) saved my ass numerous times at different venues for years, at some point i liked it so much, i automatically plugged it in the return thus bypassing the heads preamp even if it was a triple rectifier) later on i thought that id better bypassed the gainiac)) a lot of folks make the same mistake with this unit - they set too much gain, while this piece shines with low gain, but high volume settings. If you have a really loud amp, you can sound really aggressive with low gain. Didnt like its clean channel, though. Remember the times ive had a chameleon and everybody were obsessed with voodoo valve) finally hunted one down, was a great unit!
I'm more interested in that KittyHawk preamp that's right behind you! Leon, have you ever tried an Engl E530?
More about that soon
@@LeonTodd I love the Engl, though i have the E430 tube toner preamp/midiswitcher. I think they sound the same. I must look for your demo :)
Would you say this is equal to, better or worse than the standard modelling solutions today?
I think all but the absolute cheapest modellers out there hand are far more satisfying.
Sounded decent to me.
🎶She’s a gainiac, gainiac on the floor…🎶🤣🤣🤣🤣
I kinda like those mids
Lol. You cut "Gainiac" off too soon! Love it more than Firewind's cover (which I really like). 😁
Лампа для красоты или она все же выполняет свое предназначение ?
So they put a Sliver Dragon pedal into a rack unit... hilarious!
It even has the same grill over the tube!
Any chance you have heard of a Nomad Axxeman... 🤔🍻
Never!
Thing to remember with this is even though it is "tube", it is a starved plate design, so kinda meh...I love how you use the term "grease". The only other cat I've heard use it is Steve Lukather, who I thought coined the term :)
Yeah I got that from Luke, perfectly describes his tone!
@@LeonTodd It does for sure. I remember when I read it it was sort of a backhanded barb at effects lol. I guess because this was the era of massive Bradshaw racks and PBs. Dude is a legend!
I got a Rocktron Prophesy if you’d care to check it out
I always thought this thing was great. Nowadays tho it’s fractal for me.
Definitely want to try a Prophesy
@@LeonTodd I don’t mind shipping it to you to try. It’s just sitting in the rack
The mids kinda sound quacky like a hotrodded plexi
That’s probably just a Rampage in a rack unit.
It's ok I guess, but I much prefer the Piranha-- though I admit that's probably because I owned one. Still, it just doesn't seem... inspiring. Anyway, thanks as always for the demo.
I like the sound but the graphics look cheesy, the original Gainiac looked way cooler. Another great vid. 👍
I’m surprised at the mediocre metal sound from Rocktron(not you I hasten to add!) after using a Rocktron intellifex which was a fantastic rack effects this doesn’t match up to that quality, it’s as if they had lost their way a bit in the 2000’s. Very limited with no midi also and I think the JMP1 or ADA are still the kings. Still nice to see all this legacy gear demoed though👍
so just because you see a LED next to a tube, you think the tube isn't doing anything? preposterous logic, although really common, which says a lot about most guitarists: anything they don't understand, it's either: 1. a 'gimmick', 2.a 'gimmick', or 3. a 'gimmick'. . A tube costs money, and you need high tension components to make it work. That stuff costs money. Companies try to make a profit. It follows that no manufacturer would put something in there that costs them money, that does nothing. Why the hell would they do that for? Dumb logic......They might as well stuff a 20 dollar bill into every preamp and leave it there. PS. cool track.
it SOOOO nails that jumkyard 'hollywood' tone! i kept hoping you'd break into the riff hahahaha

I had to click the video when I saw the thumbnail and thought "yuck!". It's not bad, but there's something that rubs me the wrong way in this sound. And I can't even be sure if I could point it out in A/B yet I'm not a fan.
wow, that's actually the first preamp I see you trying that I find awful no matter the setting. Dull cleans and honky leads. Yuck. TBH the gainiac 1 was better to me, with a mean lead tone that reminded me of randalls.
First to comment here 🙂
Lame
@@shaharbar hey no need to get salty here, just an observation that I was one of the first to watch and comment on Leon's video,i think he makes wonderful content for guitar players.
All comments are good for THE ALGORITHM
I can't thumb down the video because the presentation was on spot but the product sounded terrible. Rocktron what happened with this one?
