    Racks are great!! I have used them over the year and yes you can get that tube and solid state mixture. By plugging your output to your effects return on your head amp and man its nice to have. TK says that in the video and he is correct use your Tube head return for any rack you run and its a win win situation. Rocktron was one of the leading rack producers in the world and still are. Its great to see them still producing incredible products.

    Assuming that Rocktron preamp is solid state, wouldn't you be missing out on all that nice 12ax7 tube sound by bypassing your tube preamp?

    • @Frommel2000
      @Frommel2000 10 лет назад +1

      Yes you do. This widowmaker is very harsh and shrill sounding, quite the opposite of what you expect from a real tube preamp.

    • @LFC-Star
      @LFC-Star 8 лет назад

      +Frommel2000 However as it's solid state it'll be dependable..

      +Адам Томпсон I'm new to the rack gear so I'm confused as to what to buy? I read good things about Rocktron even Dave Mustaine from Megadeth rates Rocktron and uses their gear.

      +Reece113 Not a bad choice.. as they'd all be compatible.. Rocktron gear is decent stuff from what I've read.. But like any manufacturer there's always the odd product that fails.. From what I've read on the whole Rocktron is solid gear.

    I don't consider myself a "pro" guitarist but I play and I just so happened to have some extra scratch this year and decided "What the hell! Let's try this and that." I got a Rocktron Voodu Valve, Velocity 300, BBE Maximizer and Alesis 3630 Comp/Gate...i'm piecing it together and my question is HOW DO I OR WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND THE WAY TO SET IT UP? Do I use stereo TRS cables to connect them all? Help is needed, thanks and keep on rocking \,,/

    • @LFC-Star
      @LFC-Star 8 лет назад +1

      +4142Wilb I'm new too to racks but from the advice I've read: the heaviest item goes on the bottom.. Which is usually the power amp.. have the pre-amp at the top of the rack (under the power conditioner (if you plan to use one) so go in order of what gives off the most heat as heat rises. So heaviest item on the bottom then put the the other effects in whichever order you like but have the pre-amp at the top under the power conditioner.... I plan to use a rack mounted power strip which will be on the back of my rack..

    HI Tone King. Years ago I had a Boss GL100 guitar driver preamp, and a Marshall 2020 power amp. I loved the set up, but I sold it. I recently bought another GL100 and I'm looking for a way to amp up the pre-amp easily - I'm never going to play gigs again, but I'm looking for a way of getting a recording set up / headphone to play in my house. I have a tiny Roland 405 twin stack, and don't want to use the included combo (I've never liked combo amps).

    I own zero pedals.
    The start of a good rack system is a Sound sculpture Switchblade GL. These are programmable routers. They will let you connect all of your gear 200 ways without unplugging any cables. They control your MIDI gear as well as your relay switches. Mine is overloaded. I have 4 preamps, 7 amps, 4 guitars and 2 Eventide Harmonizers on mine. It handles this all flawlessly.
    Preamps are all of the character. Marshall is not the same as ADA is not the same as Mesa is not the same as Engl. These different preamps will create the root tones of your rig. Most of them are programmable, so if you want half power you can customize presets and pull them up with one button press. Some preamps include chorus, and the Rockman XPR had analog delay, eq, reverb.
    The poweramps are somewhat predictable. I have a Marshall EL34 50/50 that I just retubed that roars. It has Greenbacks on one half and Alnico Golds on the other. For 6L6 Mesa Boogie provides a split Dual Rectifier section with their 2:100 into Vintage 30 on one half and Creamback on the other. Brutality. For EL84, Peavey Classic 50/50. It is the middle ground amp, I use Alnico Blues wide open. I'm only using half of that amp.
    Because there is always potential to fall out of love with these, I have the Marshall JTM45 by Victoria, the Sovereign and for the Vibrolux, a Victoria Victorilux. A simple circuit amp head or combo give a great touch sensitivity for low gain applications. Believe it or not, rack gear works great wide open.
    I will never again put my effects between the pre/power. I used to, but since I bought mic preamps, those are the signals that flow to effects. The massive difference in tone, having the power amp and the speaker in line adds so much warmth and character, it is hard to go back to in-line effects. I send a preamp signal to effects so I can use the tuner silently, and that's it. All effects are done as AUX sends. Comparable to a Wet Dry Wet rig, the AUX Send method leaves the dry signal untouched, and you eventually appreciate that. Your dry sound is most of your sound.
    What comes into the interface is dry guitar/preamp/poweramp/speaker. It does a loop out for effects, and you can add whatever you want and any mix level. There are no rules, it is all preference. Some say racks died, well if that were the case TC1210s wouldn't be $1600, Rockman XPRs wouldn't be $1200, and Marshall EL34 amps wouldn't be $750. Eventide's would come down in price...
    If you end up with numerous amps, read the back for the fuse size. This is the amperage you can expect this to pull, for example the Marshall has two 3.5A fuses meaning 7A pull. Most circuits in houses are 15A circuits so it is easy to overload. Pay attention to your power pull and stay under 12A on a 15A breaker, circuits are rated for 80% constant. Use surge protection.
    I have 8 mics permanently setup in the speaker iso booth. These are selectable in software, and these routings are used in conjunction with MIDI patches to record the specific amps. A switchblade will let you route to every amp at the same time without penalty, but the mics will pick that up. They are the ultimate tool for guitar rigs.
    Shame we have devolved back to pedals. I have never liked them.

    Tone King, can you explain how to connect a preamp to a power amp and how to adjust volume levels? I have been looking around you tube but no luck so far....

    • @ethanlancaster76
      @ethanlancaster76 5 лет назад

      Carlos Galindo if your amp has an effects loop run an out from your pre to the send and back to one of the rear inputs from the return of the effects loop on your amp. Plug your guitar into the input on the front of your preamp instead of the amp and your done. If you don’t have an effects loop you will have to run your preamp output to the front of the amp input and plug your guitar into your preamp.

    I'm a newbie to rack effects. I bought a 6U ABS rack case. I bought a ART SGX with an included X-11 MIDI foot controller from EBAY. What's your opinion on the effects processor? What should I get next? A pre-amp or a power amp? If so what do you think of the Rocktron Velocity 300 power amp?

  • @verbotenco
    @verbotenco 8 лет назад

    Why doesn't Rocktron install an internal PSU in its products? The adapters are real pain in the rack. No way I can plug it into my power conditioner.

    • @LFC-Star
      @LFC-Star 8 лет назад

      +verbotenco If you bought a rack mounted power strip. As I plan to.. then the supplied power adaptors wouldn't be an issue. Power Conditioners are good if all your rack gear all use kettle type sockets on the back. As you know many manufacturers like to use small circular input sockets. I think all companies should use the kettle D power sockets as standard on rack gear.

      +Anthony Coughlin A rack means the effects and other things are all plugged in and ready to go. just have a power strip on the back of the rack.. then you can leave them all plugged in. Just plug in the guitar lead and the mains lead from the power strip and plug a cable into the ext cab or amp. then you're all set.
