Everyone's having higher and higher expectation for BTS. I hope they won't be criticised if they fail to achieve them. So much pressure on them these days.
It’s a lot of pressure on US army as well. Let’s just keep doing what we’ve always been doing which is gradually gaining organic success. Bts wasn’t a hit overnight and they aren’t now either. We’re the tortoise in this race while everyone else behaves like the hare
1) it's weird that people are more annoyed about idol cursing than idol being cursed. 2) even the authorities are not protecting their youth. They care more about the company. Why not just set a ceiling amount? 3) it's a small step for bts. The grammys is an uncharted territories. It's better to slowly be introduced to it than just barged in and risk being criticised for being "kpop".
Its so wrong, why not protect the artist. And the government is so fu_ _ !! there only a child why are they giving them responsibility to pay dept? for what, for experienced? that so gosh! and really parents is ok for that system. They should disagree for that, the child is the one suffering
I love you guys but also I get your point about how it seems like the Grammy's just wanted to find a way to include them so they gave them a minor award, but what's amazing about this is that the media in the US is actually talking about this nomination more than the main categories!! It's truly showcasing BTS' power because many people in the recording academy even mentioned that they have never seen this particular category talked about this much until BTS were nominated, so I think this is elevating their status even more. Additionally, the Grammy seating chart is considered the true power ranking of how high up you are in the music game, and BTS are getting 2nd and 3rd row seats next to the biggest stars, and even in front of others, so it's really showing how BTS are seen within the American market .

the academy said that bts was overly qualified for best new artist category because they released too many songs to be nominated but they were considered. thats why cardi b, post malone, lil pump, troy sivon and bts who i think should be nominated were not nominated. damn if only bts didn't have to feed armys so much because then they would have been nominated for best new artist.........
Fer 094 There was this meme how Grammy’s must have opened the Tear album and they saw Jin’s picture and were like- Yes it deserves an award for packaging!! Well I highly doubt if they even tried listening to the songs or go through the meaning of the songs... so much variety is trapped in an album, it’s amazing, songs are so meaningful unlike Cardi B (first of all all her songs are just about bitches and I’ve got a lot of money thing, second she doesn’t even write her own lyrics, third her rapping skills are above average but it isn’t the best out there, she’s more of a popular artist, I don’t think her songs have that much of a critical acclaim). Grammy’s being unfair to boy groups is fine, BTS’s songs are in Korean and hence they fail to realise how different BTS is compared to Backstreet Boys or NSync... how diverse their music and lyrics is... it’s kinda unfair...
I swear I feel so bad for these kids. They are a group called ATEEN and they didn’t debut in Korea yet that’s why they couldn’t even stand up for themselves bc they were afraid that their debut would get canceled. I hope knetz understands the importance of this situation and supports the kids.

You know a lots of the kpop channels out there act like a group called BTS doesn’t exist at all. May it be any video, you’ll rarely ever find BTS in it. And if a channel randonly mentions BTS, then they are called biased, like why people envy them so much??? They worked twice as hard compared to any popular kpop group rn, and because of them now even groups not from the Big3 have started getting exposure, which was absolutely not the case a few years ago. Some of the popular channels keep on saying ARMY’s are trash, BTS ain’t that good and shit. And people love it!! Grammys call themselves prestigious but they still definitely care about views and popularity. I think they're kind of introducing the idea of BTSxGrammys and if it's successful maybe next year they'll be up for a performance or even a bigger award. That or they just want higher ratings. IMO they are trying to ease the US into accepting BTS's presence. The Grammy's often doesn't nominate American artists for things they deserve. So it's no surprise that BTS has an even bigger hurdle to overcome Yes, inviting them to the Grammy's is a power move- it's to generate views of an award show that has declining ratings. But business is business. If BTS gets their name out, and their presence known, it's still something that will benefit them to an extent. And who knows maybe a few years down the line they will get nominated in the music category Baby steps You have to crawl before you can walk.
I feel like some people don’t understand how big BTS going to Grammys is. They at first were downgraded when they were going to BBMAs too but we all saw the result. BTS are growing even bigger and no one can stop them 2019 is already BTS year
Grammys are gonna invite people that have created a buzz in the music industry and are worthy of it. Like a few years ago when Hamilton opened and became a huge Broadway hit, the cast of Hamilton performed at the Grammys. They also got to accept their award on TV. They never care to air the Best Musical category at the Grammys, probably because they have the Tony Awards, but Hamilton was too big to ignore and had so much demand. I think it's the same with BTS. What they've accomplished as Korean singers with two number 1 albums & an album that was even taken seriously to be nominated is something they really shouldn't ignore so why not give them some spotlight as presenters. And they of course have the demand here so it makes sense.
I usually watch grammys, or at least the performances later, but BTS is the reason I requested the day off of work to sit at home an watch all of it live.

I don't think BTS's album cover is standard even among Kpop albums. The line that make the shape of flower and love still amaze me. And it has story behind it like what Lee of Husky Fox has said. And what really amaze me is, the album itself is really minimalist and simple unlike other Kpop albums, but the shape of its line makes it special. And if you connecting all 12 albums you will realize how beautiful it is.
As far as bts is concerned, their growth is organic. The fandom and their company understands it too. To even get noticed by grammy esp as a ''boygroup'' tat too as a non english boygroup is more difficult than we all think. Breaking tat rule and putting bts in the grammy circle is a huge step in the right path. There is only so long can all these award shows ignore bts music and message.

@@anastasia.00 There is a lot of industry politics surrounding the Grammy's and their nominating process. They have been receiving backlash over the past few years. If anything they have been loosing credibility as a "serious" award show. Thats why they revamped their nominating committee. They do get things wrong and compared to what got nominations this year BTS would've been a great contender. But as the original poster stated they have no ideal what to to with a foreign language album or artist.

According to an article by the Grammys, it's not just the package of the album that they're judging, it's also about the story behind it, the concept and the sales. The others competitors like the Chairman, are really beautiful but they will also be judging the "behind story" of the album. I don't know them so I can't affirm anything. But as you know, the whole concept of BTS's album is really extraordinar. From their storyline, to the connection between the albums, and between the era, going through the details that make these albums collectors and makes you want to buy more, to the little attention that are given for the fans, are all the things westerns album are lacking of. Also the selling of physical albums is always up in Korea because, it's literally a gift for thanking the fans for their support, but in western music, physical sales are almost non-existent, so having a kpop group whose sales correspond to 10% of these, on 20% of total sales, is a record for a physical album. So I might be biased, but I'm not really worried about that price. And even if they don't win, I would still be happy, because we brought them to the Grammys, they are there, they seem happy (and stressed obviously), but yhea I'm happy ^^.
People said the same shit about BTS in 2017 when they were nominated for the BB Top social artist.That they were only nominated and invited for publicity, they will be a joke in America all sorts of things like that.But look what happened after that one appearance as a nominee for a minor category, AMA followed right after and their popularity grew exponentially all over the world until they were powerful enough to have their comeback on BBMAs. Korean media who always downplayed BTS success can't get enough of them now and didn't you guys also ''officially'' became ''ARMY'' right around that time?? lol. Yes, I completely agree! There's no telling how much exposure they'll get this time around. And yeah most ARMYs joined around that time. Though, me personally, I've been with them since 2014, somewhere around the end of Boy In Luv era and the beginning of Danger. There are no words to describe how proud I am of them! So happy for BTS presenting. And those swag bags that the Grammys give to presenters can be worth tens of thousands of dollars. I am disappointed they didn’t get nominated for their music tho. Grammys only giving them crumbs but had to give them something to keep army at bay. They deserve more. That portion of the awards aren’t even aired on TV I think.
I think the Korean Music Association (if there is one) and the Korean government's cultural and entertainment sector really needs to make some better labor laws for kpop idol trainees and artists. THIS is disturbing. Many of the people who become trainees are children, or they are underaged teens. This is really not okay. The laws need to be revised A lot of the people who get into the industry don't come from financially well off families. So seeking to terminate a contract just puts them in a different kind of hell. Since the music industry does generate a substantial an revenue for the country, and there are many minors working in it- there needs to be closer inspection into the ongoings of the music industry. But of course government corruption just means they hold off on exposing things till it can be best used to divert the public's attention from anything the government themselves are getting up to. It would be good if the public could actually care about these people- but the public themselves are the harshest critic of idols. Why anyone would choose such a life is beyond my comprehension. But people should still try to be more supportive. And take sexual harassment claims seriously.
Agree. The president’s office recently (in December) responded to the petition about the abuse of The East Light members and outlined changes they were working on. It's not anyone's job to open doors for anyone, but any Kpop artist going to a major award show brings light to other artists in the genre and gives them a chance too. So it's a win win for everyone. No need to fight :)

About the contract: you guys were probably not around when DBSK separated... The contract terms changed because of them. It was a nightmare... We never recovered after that. 😕

International fans were mostly out of loop 10-15 years ago when DBSK still had 5 members so everybody was shocked when all the dirt came out during their lawsuit.
@@valentineyves Uh, that's a very long and complicated story but I'll try. 15 years ago DBSK (or TVXQ) was what BTS is today. They were not famous in the West because before BTS none of the kpop groups managed to do that but in Asia they were the kings. Of course they had many fans in the kpop community but not the general public. Cassiopeia, their fanclub had the most official members in the world, they had the military out on the airport when they traveled to protect them, Jaejoong, their main singer and visual was chosen as the Most Beautiful Man in Asia for years in row, the group selling out stadiums on every tour in minutes just like BTS. If you type "red ocean kpop" in the search bar you're still going to get their concert and it was 15 years ago. 1st place on the music charts 83 times, 55 music awards in 6 years, I could continue with their achievements for pages but you get the idea. Many of the older BTS fans like myself came from DBSK when they disbanded because BTS gave us the same "family" feeling we had with DBSK. They were brothers in every sense of the word, just like BTS. It was a dream and all of a sudden it has ended. No signs, no warnings, nothing. Can you imagine BTS preparing for the Grammys and on Monday announcing they will not continue together? That's what happened with them. One day we woke up to the news of DBSK stopping all activities and 3 of the 5 members suing SM Ent, their company. It was painful. During that lawsuit we found out their contract was 15 years, which as the guys said in the video was prolonged with every day they were not active, meaning family visits, sicknesses or the military. They hardly got any money from their fame. I'm not going to type it out but here's a summary: www.allkpop.com/article/2009/10/tvxqs-income-revealed The five members separated into two groups after that: TVXQ with Yunho and Changmin who are still active under SM and JYJ with Jaejoong, Yoochun and Junsu. JYJ was named the Invisible Idols because unofficially SM is blocking them from TV appearances, they are excluded from music charts, they had so many atrocities against them that it would take hours to type it out. Just a few examples: Honorary ambassadors for event, their performance cancelled only hours before the event, replaced by SM Ent artists; Junsu became a successful musical artist but Elisabeth musical OST excludes any of his songs despite him being one of the 3 main characters; Junsu wins popularity award on SMA but not allowed to attend the award show; interviews cancelled after successful events; they can’t release their new songs as CD only as a book... I won't continue. And all of this after JYJ winning every single lawsuit and everything SM tried to throw at them, they won every time. My opinion is why would ATeen want to sue? They have a lot to loss and how they are not making any money. Suing a company is not cheap, plus there can be repercussions for them. Sexual harassment happens a lot in kpop. They have so many issues behind closed doors. Also don’t they have two types of contract? One for training and one for those who will now debuted. If your on a training contract it’s not 7 years it like two years. 7 years is for those idols who will be debut on the music scene. The Beatles were nominated for a Grammy for Recording Package. Many legends have been nominated for Grammys for Best Recording Package such as The Beatles, Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, Jay Z, Rihanna, The Rolling Stones, and Kanye West . I hope BTS wins. But even if they don't win their brand has now already been elevated just by being Grammy nominated artists. By being Grammy nominated artists they may now get paid even more for endorsement deals and performances in the west. A Grammy is one of the most if not the most prestigious award given to a musician in the western world. Once someone is a Grammy winner or even Grammy nominated their status usually goes up. Western media may even start announcing them as "Grammy Winning" or "Grammy Nominated" worldwide boyband BTS. This Grammy nomination can elevate their careers even higher so I hope they win. Who knows maybe next year they may be nominated for best group. And maybe someday in the near future the entire genre of Kpop can become a new Grammy category as well since there are so many artists.

I feel same as Danny about the nomination. BTS is not a regular boy band. They’re involved in making their own music so much. To me they’re more like an indie musician band. Grammy can’t realize it earlier. I even don’t understand why Grammy invites BTS to the show at last minutes! Boosting their ratings? Anyway I hope BTS feels OK in the show. I'm just waiting for the day bts are nominated for a music related award or best group award at any american award show not just the grammys. Like they're only ever nominated for social artist categories yet the fanfare they receive or the way they're treated by the media makes it look like they're the stars of the show. It's kind of backward tbh. bts is in such a weird position in the us cuz they're super popular and the mainstream media acknowledges it yet ignores it at the same time. The only thing is, if the sexual abuse claims are false, why would they say that her daughter witnessed it? I wonder how much say the artist have over how much company debt they accumulate? Like promotions and shows. I didn't know Idols cursing was that big a deal as long as it isn't gratuitous. I mean, every single Army has seen the clip of Jungkook saying, "Oh man, holy shit!" Or do English swears not matter? Perhaps they don't? Disregard. As far as BTS and the Grammys go, I'm not too disappointed over the packaging nomination because plenty of U.S. artists have never even been invited, much less asked to present an award. The level of exposure BTS gains by attending these award shows has a value all on its own. Artists that never were and never will be globally popular have won Grammys; so nominations and winning is nice but it obviously isn't everything. That is how I'm choosing to view it anyway. :)

Usually foreign curses don't feel as severe as the ones in your native language (it's a lot easier for me to curse in English than in my language), so I wouldn't be surprised if Koreans don't care as much about English curses.

but also I get your point about how it seems like the Grammy's just wanted to find a way to include them so they gave them a minor award, but what's amazing about this is that the media in the US is actually talking about this nomination more than the main categories!!
It's truly showcasing BTS' power because many people in the recording academy even mentioned that they have never seen this particular category talked about this much until BTS were nominated, so I think this is elevating their status even more.
Additionally, the Grammy seating chart is considered the true power ranking of how high up you are in the music game, and BTS are getting 2nd and 3rd row seats next to the biggest stars, and even in front of others, so it's really showing how BTS are seen within the American market .

Yes, inviting them to the Grammy's is a power move- it's to generate views of an award show that has declining ratings. But business is business. If BTS gets their name out, and their presence known, it's still something that will benefit them to an extent.

Grammys are gonna invite people that have created a buzz in the music industry and are worthy of it. Like a few years ago when Hamilton opened and became a huge Broadway hit, the cast of Hamilton performed at the Grammys. They also got to accept their award on TV. They never care to air the Best Musical category at the Grammys, probably because they have the Tony Awards, but Hamilton was too big to ignore and had so much demand. I think it's the same with BTS. What they've accomplished as Korean singers with two number 1 albums & an album that was even taken seriously to be nominated is something they really shouldn't ignore so why not give them some spotlight as presenters. And they of course have the demand here so it makes sense.

I don't think BTS's album cover is standard even among Kpop albums. The line that make the shape of flower and love still amaze me. And it has story behind it like what Lee of Husky Fox has said. And what really amaze me is, the album itself is really minimalist and simple unlike other Kpop albums, but the shape of its line makes it special. And if you connecting all 12 albums you will realize how beautiful it is.

As far as bts is concerned, their growth is organic. The fandom and their company understands it too. If anything they have been loosing credibility as a "serious" award show. Thats why they revamped their nominating committee. They do get things wrong and compared to what got nominations this year BTS would've been a great contender. But as the original poster stated they have no ideal what to to with a foreign language album or artist.

According to an article by the Grammys, it's not just the package of the album that they're judging, it's also about the story behind it, the concept and the sales.
The others competitors like the Chairman, are really beautiful but they will also be judging the "behind story" of the album. I don't know them so I can't affirm anything.
But as you know, the whole concept of BTS's album is really extraordinar. From their storyline, to the connection between the albums, and between the era, going through the details that make these albums collectors and makes you want to buy more, to the little attention that are given for the fans, are all the things westerns album are lacking of.
Also the selling of physical albums is always up in Korea because, it's literally a gift for thanking the fans for their support, but in western music, physical sales are almost non-existent, so having a kpop group whose sales correspond to 10% of these, on 20% of total sales, is a record for a physical album.
So I might be biased, but I'm not really worried about that price. And even if they don't win, I would still be happy, because we brought them to the Grammys, they are there, they seem happy (and stressed obviously), but yhea I'm happy ^^.
People said the same shit about BTS in 2017 when they were nominated for the BB Top social artist.That they were only nominated and invited for publicity, they will be a joke in America all sorts of things like that.But look what happened after that one appearance as a nominee for a minor category, AMA followed right after and their popularity grew exponentially all over the world until they were powerful enough to have their comeback on BBMAs. So happy for BTS presenting. And those swag bags that the Grammys give to presenters can be worth tens of thousands of dollars. I am disappointed they didn’t get nominated for their music tho. I think the Korean Music Association (if there is one) and the Korean government's cultural and entertainment sector really needs to make some better labor laws for kpop idol trainees and artists.

A lot of the people who get into the industry don't come from financially well off families. So seeking to terminate a contract just puts them in a different kind of hell. Since the music industry does generate a substantial an revenue for the country, and there are many minors working in it- there needs to be closer inspection into the ongoings of the music industry. But of course government corruption just means they hold off on exposing things till it can be best used to divert the public's attention from anything the government themselves are getting up to.
It would be good if the public could actually care about these people- but the public themselves are the harshest critic of idols.
Why anyone would choose such a life is beyond my comprehension. But people should still try to be more supportive. And take sexual harassment claims seriously.

I feel like the whole thing with the government cracking down on the entertainment industry is especially complicated in Korea because it’s the same industry that the government actively promotes as a major economic asset to the county. So it’s in their best interests to promote a perfect and clean image while keeping the real issues from being exposed.

It's not anyone's job to open doors for anyone, but any Kpop artist going to a major award show brings light to other artists in the genre and gives them a chance too. So it's a win win for everyone. No need to fight :)

International fans were mostly out of loop 10-15 years ago when DBSK still had 5 members so everybody was shocked when all the dirt came out during their lawsuit.

@@valentineyves Uh, that's a very long and complicated story but I'll try. 15 years ago DBSK (or TVXQ) was what BTS is today. They were not famous in the West because before BTS none of the kpop groups managed to do that but in Asia they were the kings. Of course they had many fans in the kpop community but not the general public. Cassiopeia, their fanclub had the most official members in the world, they had the military out on the airport when they traveled to protect them, Jaejoong, their main singer and visual was chosen as the Most Beautiful Man in Asia for years in row, the group selling out stadiums on every tour in minutes just like BTS. If you type "red ocean kpop" in the search bar you're still going to get their concert and it was 15 years ago. 1st place on the music charts 83 times, 55 music awards in 6 years, I could continue with their achievements for pages but you get the idea. Many of the older BTS fans like myself came from DBSK when they disbanded because BTS gave us the same "family" feeling we had with DBSK. They were brothers in every sense of the word, just like BTS. It was a dream and all of a sudden it has ended. No signs, no warnings, nothing. Can you imagine BTS preparing for the Grammys and on Monday announcing they will not continue together? That's what happened with them. One day we woke up to the news of DBSK stopping all activities and 3 of the 5 members suing SM Ent, their company. It was painful. During that lawsuit we found out their contract was 15 years, which as the guys said in the video was prolonged with every day they were not active, meaning family visits, sicknesses or the military. They hardly got any money from their fame. I'm not going to type it out but here's a summary: www.allkpop.com/article/2009/10/tvxqs-income-revealed The five members separated into two groups after that: TVXQ with Yunho and Changmin who are still active under SM and JYJ with Jaejoong, Yoochun and Junsu. JYJ was named the Invisible Idols because unofficially SM is blocking them from TV appearances, they are excluded from music charts, they had so many atrocities against them that it would take hours to type it out. Just a few examples: Honorary ambassadors for event, their performance cancelled only hours before the event, replaced by SM Ent artists; Junsu became a successful musical artist but Elisabeth musical OST excludes any of his songs despite him being one of the 3 main characters; Junsu wins popularity award on SMA but not allowed to attend the award show; interviews cancelled after successful events; they can’t release their new songs as CD only as a book... I won't continue. And all of this after JYJ winning every single lawsuit and everything SM tried to throw at them, they won every time. After this lawsuit the Fair Trade Commission came out with the standardized contract of 7 years, they passed the "JYJ Law" as the public called it which prevents broadcasting companies banning artist fro appearing on TV without a just cause ( www.soompi.com/article/793955wpp/jyj-law-prohibiting-blacklisting-of-celebrities-passed ) but despite that JYJ still can't appear anywhere to this day.

My opinion is why would ATeen want to sue? They have a lot to loss and how they are not making any money. Suing a company is not cheap, plus there can be repercussions for them. Sexual harassment happens a lot in kpop. They have so many issues behind closed doors.
Also don’t they have two types of contract? One for training and one for those who will now debuted. If your on a training contract it’s not 7 years it like two years. 7 years is for those idols who will be debut on the music scene. I saw a RUclips video on an ex idol explaining how idol contract works.

The Beatles were nominated for a Grammy for Recording Package. Many legends have been nominated for Grammys for Best Recording Package such as The Beatles, Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, Jay Z, Rihanna, The Rolling Stones, and Kanye West . I hope BTS wins. But even if they don't win their brand has now already been elevated just by being Grammy nominated artists. By being Grammy nominated artists they may now get paid even more for endorsement deals and performances in the west. A Grammy is one of the most if not the most prestigious award given to a musician in the western world. Once someone is a Grammy winner or even Grammy nominated their status usually goes up. Western media may even start announcing them as "Grammy Winning" or "Grammy Nominated" worldwide boyband BTS. This Grammy nomination can elevate their careers even higher so I hope they win. Who knows maybe next year they may be nominated for best group. And maybe someday in the near future the entire genre of Kpop can become a new Grammy category as well since there are so many artists.

So I don’t know if you guys know this, but the curse for this award for people like Frank Sinatra came back to Grammy a year after being nominated for this very award to win Best (insert music award here) and BTS is sharing the nomination with The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Metallica, David Bowie, Madonna, Pearl Jam, Stevie Wonder, Prince, Elvis Presley, Beastie Boys, Jay Z, Snoop Dog and Rihanna. I feel same as Danny about the nomination. BTS is not a regular boy band. They’re involved in making their own music so much. To me they’re more like an indie musician band. Grammy can’t realize it earlier. I even don’t understand why Grammy invites BTS to the show at last minutes! Boosting their ratings? Anyway I hope BTS feels OK in the show. I may not want to watch the whole dxmn show that I quit for a few years, but I will support BTS from LA always.

I'm just waiting for the day bts are nominated for a music related award or best group award at any american award show not just the grammys. Like they're only ever nominated for social artist categories yet the fanfare they receive or the way they're treated by the media makes it look like they're the stars of the show. It's kind of backward tbh. bts is in such a weird position in the us cuz they're super popular and the mainstream media acknowledges it yet ignores it at the same time. These award shows are just finding, like you said, "bullshit" ways to invite bts cuz they know their popularity and relevancy will bring in higher ratings. bts' name is finally well known and now all we need is for their music to be too.

I wonder how much say the artist have over how much company debt they accumulate? Like promotions and shows. I didn't know Idols cursing was that big a deal as long as it isn't gratuitous. I mean, every single Army has seen the clip of Jungkook saying, "Oh man, holy shit!" Or do English swears not matter? Perhaps they don't? Disregard. As far as BTS and the Grammys go, I'm not too disappointed over the packaging nomination because plenty of U.S. artists have never even been invited, much less asked to present an award. The level of exposure BTS gains by attending these award shows has a value all on its own. Artists that never were and never will be globally popular have won Grammys; so nominations and winning is nice but it obviously isn't everything. That is how I'm choosing to view it anyway. :)
