- This video shows option on how you can keep your Ford F-150 from going into cylinder deactivation. If you are one of the many skeptics out there regarding this feature or if you have an aftermarket exhaust on your new truck and it sounds bad, you may find this information useful. Otherwise if you can get a truck tune it would also work to disable this feature. Remember to LIKE and SUBSCRIBE if you would like to see more content from Danimal's House. Thank you!
If you want to deactivate cylinder deactivation just plug out the deactivate sensor cable that’s connected to the negative battery cable and it stays in V8 at all times
I do not believe that this is correct because before I changed my muffler I tried that exact process. I unplugged the wire you are referencing and every time I started the truck the dash gave me a warning about the battery monitoring system that I had to clear. For weeks I thought I had some cool easy cheat to cylinder deactivation but when I put the aftermarket muffler on I could hear every time the cylinders deactivated. Now I have the truck tuned and the cylinder deactivation is actually gone now so it sounds the same all the time. Your suggestion may be true for other models but for my 2022 Ford truck that trick didn't do anything for me.
@@danimalshouse Was the tuning worth it? I'm assuming you bought the Livernois tuning module? How do you like the vehicles performance now?
it only deactivate the active start stop thing and also it wont warn you when the battery get low or when you leave the key to the ON position for to long it wont turn to the OFF position automaticly
If you don't want to watch full video then Logical meaning of this video is you cant stop deactivation...
Thanks Jack As! LOL! Actually though, you can stop cylinder deactivation with a custom truck tune and you can "AVOID" cylinder deactivation by using the examples I have shared. It's a pain when you consider that a truck tune is over $500 just to disable a feature that may or may not be useful, depending on your belief. Either way, thanks for watching!
The best way to fix it is to get 4scan and shut the feature off in the ecm. GM couldn't get their trucks to work right with this feature and those engines were oil burners because of this tech.
Correct. Any feature that creates more equipment cycling has to wear things out much faster. I have the truck tuned and that feature disabled. Thanks for watching!
Great video! I wasn't aware of the 4H when in Sport mode. I'll have to look into what exactly that does and if it's unecessary wear and tear. Will try the manual mode next. Thanks for posting up.
You bet. The sport mode will give about 75-80% power to the rear wheels and 20-25% power to the front . It will also leave the truck in gear at higher rpms so there is more torque when you accelerate, making if more fun/sporty to drive. This is why it kills your mileage. Good luck out there!
Wouldn't turning it to sport mode automatically change what you need such as 4h?
It doesn't shift to 4H. It only does it into 4A on Lariat and higher trims. And xl or XLT it won't shift to 4H.
@@LightningRich00and there's nothing stopping you from just switching back to 2H once you've swapped to sport mode. A bit annoying to do it every time though.
@@LightningRich00my 2021 does the shift automatically when you put it in sport mode👍
I never leave sport mode, I need to get into forscan so it's my default
There's a bunch of simple things Ford could allow that would improve my user experience. A default drive mode setting would be a great suggestion. Cylinder deactivation and auto-start/stop would be other features that could be enabled or disabled. Thanks for sharing, I love sport mode as well.
You can go to 2 wheel drive while in sport mode
Worst thing Ford ( or any other company) ever did….
I agree completely. That and auto start-stop!
Oh really ?? Remember something called a PINTO....or maybe even EDSEL ? Gimme a break. The video is by a guy who admits this is all about aftermarket exhausts !
You may thank your government and their ever stricter emission control laws!
It’s our govt, not these companies. They would not do this if they didn’t have to. It’s another expense they have to pass on to the consumer which they would rather not do. Just the the after market treatment on diesels.
@@danimalshousethe auto stop Start you can turn off easily by pressing a button on the dash right?
my 2022 lives in sport mode.
I'm up to 18k miles on the truck now and I'm through the "save on gas" stage. I love sport mode as well. Thanks for watching!
When you go in sport mode the truck goes into 4 auto which allows the truck to engage 4 wheel drive if necessary when you lose traction in the rear. You don't stay in 4H all the time.
I agree. There is a power screen in the dash views that shows how much power is being applied to each tire and it varies regularly when in sport mode based on the slippage.
dude, in sport mode all day long, even in park.
It is fun, I agree!
Well thank you for this info
Thanks for commenting!
Sport mode it is then lol. I wouldn't mind always being in sport mode
Sport mode with E-85 makes me feel like I'm in high school again every time.
@@danimalshousedid you do a video on e85 I have no idea what this is?
@@Tsl4Lf E85 is gas available at Kwik Trip stores nearby my area that has up to 85% ethanal in it. It can only be used in certain vehicles but my truck can use it. The fuel has less energy but has a very high octane rating. The way my truck operates it gets less mpg but provides more power and is less expensive than premium gas in my area. Hope this helps.
Hello sir. Got a question since i bought a 22 5.0 a month ago. I noticed when im at a stoplight and i can feel a little vibration. Kinda like when there is a missfire. Do u know if maybe that cylinder deactivation could be on when at idle in drive? Thank you
Hi, so I would guess the vibration you are feeling is your engine going in at out of start/stop functions. My truck doesn’t have auto start/stop but I have another vehicle that does and I feel it when I get to stop lights. It’s not much but I notice it from time to time. Cylinder deactivation isn’t felt at all, I just can hear it because of how the tone changes from the exhaust. Good luck!
Ya same 22 5.0 and mine does same thing
@@danimalshousethe 2024 f150 has a button you can press to shut off stop and start right?
You can thank EPA
I am a little confuse as i have a 22 f150 with the 5.0....when I swift to sport mode it doesnt switch the truck to 4 wheel drive... That seem weird
AWD actually
When I go to sport mode, the dash displays "4X4 shifting in progress" and then 4A is lit up on the bottom left. I think it just makes it ready for 4X4 if it senses a slip but runs in 2-wheel if you have traction.
@danimalshouse That's super weird...must be on the higher trim levels with 4 wheel drive auto.. mine stays solidly in 2 wheel drive..
When I switch to mud an sand, slippery or rock crawl it goes to 4 high..
Idk...I'd prefer it stay in 2 wheel in sport mode anyways so I'm good lol
how do i know if my f150 stx 2023 got the cylinder activation?
If it is a 5.0L V-8 it does have it. I wouldn't worry to much about it if you don't have a loud exhaust though. It's a generally good feature but it just effects the sound when you have an aftermarket exhaust.
I suppose Ford will disable your warranty if you have it programmed out.
Not sure. Everyone I ask just gives the safe answer of "your warranty is voided" but I don't think they really know. I believe that each state has different laws regarding warranty coverage and that Ford would have to prove that the tuning change actually caused the warranty failure. For me, I have 40k on the truck now so it's not important any longer. Hope that helps.
Do you think having this on the truck even if you drive in sport mode all the time will affect long term reliability? Just wanting to hear your thoughts
If you drive in sport mode all the time, cylinder deactivation will not ever be in use but you'll be driving unnecessarily aggressive for most of the trucks life. How will that determine long term reliability, I think it's tough to answer that question. You'll buy more gas in sport mode but have more fun. You won't be using the generally considered harmful cylinder deactivation function but will put more strain on the trucks moving parts by driving at a higher RPM and shifting harder. It sounds like 6 of one and a half-dozen of the other. I have elected to purchase a permanent truck tune that disables the cylinder deactivation function 100% of the time regardless of drive mode. I usually run in normal mode and change to sport when I'm "feeling it" at times. I didn't do the tune so it would last longer I did the tune so the truck wouldn't sound like crap when in 4-cylinder mode. FYI, I have an aftermarket exhaust so it's noticable.
@@danimalshouse what tune did you get ?
Livernois
@@danimalshouse so are are not planning on buying extended warranty?
No, I don't every get warranty options.
Sounds like cylinder deactivation will cause more abnormal wear and tear. Was wanting to get a 5.0 but I guess I'll just stick to Ecoboost. Sounds like every V8 option has cylinder deactivation now.
I work in HVAC and one thing we learn is that anything that constantly cycles on and off wears out quick. This fact and the unusual sound it makes as a result of my aftermarket exhaust was enough for me to want to have the function eliminated. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching!
Nonsense. Absolute internet nonsense.
@@danimalshouse The cylinders do NOT "deactivate". The pistons continue to move in the cylinder. Air and fuel are cut. That does not "wear" an engine. C'mon man.
Whatever it's called and whatever it does, it makes the truck sound like crap when the feature activates because I have an aftermarket exhaust. No internet nonsense here. Every passenger can hear it while going through the city and the truck constantly goes in and out of having the feature active. I'm not saying its a bad feature for sure, but anything that constantly turns on and off is likely to have problems plus the main thing is, it makes my Flowmaster HP2 exhaust sound terrible when the feature is active so I turn it off via a custom truck tune.
@@rds990 It does consume excess oil and in the case of the GM engines the lifters explode due to both poor quality parts and a software fault. GM's fix for their awful DFM system is to TURN IT OFF and replace the valvetrain! Ram's system is somewhat better but not perfect, there are plenty of MDS problems. Why take the chance hoping that your engine doesn't grenade itself?
Do you have to break truck in first before getting that tuned out? The only thing I want is speed limiter remove and this removed, I’ll do power adders after break in (this for the future, I have a 24 ecboost xlt now)
That's a great question and quite honestly I'm not sure anyone really has that answer short of a Ford computer engineer or other programmer. I was so tired of listening to the exhaust when it went to 4-cylinder mode I just paid the money to have a tune installed. For me, the fuel type was the only real variable that has produced a noticeable power results. E-85 gives me a lot more power but kills the MPG.
What tune did you get installed?
I used a Livernois Motor Sports tuner that I bought online.
@@danimalshouse thank you, yea I’ll just keep do more research
@@danimalshouse I have limited understanding of Ford's tuning. From what you said it appears that the tune did not affect power but removed the cylinder deactivation annoyance. Does using E-85 on the factory tune make the same power (seat dyno) as E-85 on the Livernois tune? Thanks
What about locking out 10th gear or is that even possible? I know in the Ram trucks you can go into manual mode and advance it into 8th gear and and it will stay in V8 mode.
I don't know how you would lock out 10th but do know that the deactivation will occur in multiple gears, not just 10th. I paid for a tune that disabled the function and also provides a few other benefits that I appreciate but if I hadn't, I'd suggest sport mode.
@@danimalshouse I just picked up a new F150 with the 5.0 today. While not as quick as the Ecoboost it was still a blast to drive. What tune are you using?
Does it ever auto shift into 4 High when in Tow/Haul mode?
No it does not. It does in sport mode but not Tow/Haul.
Just wondering which year and trim truck that you’re driving?
2022 Ford F-150 with 5.0 engine, Lariat trim, 20" rims, and max tow trailer package. I do not have the kit that does the automatic cruise control or lane assist.
@@danimalshouse Thanks. I’m looking at buying a used f150 very similar to yours. How’s that 5.0 held up?
No issues for me. Have 40k on so far.
@@danimalshouse Would you say the 3.5 is just as a reliable engine as the 5.0? I normally don’t buy ford trucks
I am not qualified to answer that question with integrity. My guess is the 3.5 is just as reliable as the 2.7 since they both have turbo's and one is just more powerful. I got the 5.0 because I don't want to ever have to pay for a turbo repair. I'm not a junky though, it's just my instinct so take it for what it's worth.
Tried unplugging it and it doesn't work on my 2022 f150. I have side exit exhaust and it sounds like dog 💩 when it goes in cylinder deactivation. It still does it. Maybe not as much
Yeah, dog pooh is right! When I first drove the truck after putting the exhaust on I thought it was like a bad resonance or otherwise thought that I had made a big mistake with the exhaust change but now that I understand it its fixed. I don't know any other answer other than the drive modes or a Livernois tune. Thanks for watching!
Just tune it
How many mpg in sport mode?
Sport mode usually takes about 2mpg off of the normal mpg because it shifts later and generally is more aggressive. Lots of variables including gas type so every situation is a bit different. In sport mode with my gas I would expect to get about 17-18mpg out of it.
Why does it want to shift u into 4wheel high?
4-high is an attribute of the sport mode. It gives approximately 75% power in the drive train to the rear wheels and about 25% to the front wheels.
What time did u get to disable it?
I'm not sure what your question is. If you mean tune I got a tuner from Livernois Motor Sports
@@danimalshouse I meant tune .thanks
GM was a disaster with AFM....Ford ???WTF That TACH looks awful too
if you put 93 in the tank you could go 710 miles
I'll go back to that once we get back to summer blend in the upper midwest.
Or you could just live with it. Its a feature, not an issue.
It is a feature, however, when the feature is active it makes my truck sound terrible. I wish the truck would let me turn the feature off instead of having to do this other stuff.
@@danimalshouse You are hearing something that is so silent, it's a non factor. I have a 22 F150 and have driven it 30K. I have not heard a peep. You are letting it psych you out.

@@rds990your on every post arguing with the guy. Why would he lie about it? Many owners of the truck say the same thing. You must really be on board with all the emissions BS they are ruining vehicles with
They straight up copied the MDS from Chevy and Chrysler Hemis
Can it be turned off with the forscan?
I believe no. The only way I have found to deactivate is an $800 tuner. It really frustrates me that I can't turn it off. It's a dumb feature.
@danimalshouse what $800 tuner?
If people quit buying it then Ford would remove it
Cylinder deactivation does NOTHING to harm your engine. Nada, zip, zilch.
It may not but it makes it sound bad with my aftermarket exhaust.
How do you know it does nothing to your engine?
So you don't think that suddenly running your 5,000lbs vehicle on 4 cylinders doesn't cause extra stress and heat?
Bs it can lead to carbon buildup I had it on a Honda odessy ruined the motor
