  • In todays video I make use of some spare time to change the Differential oil in my 2006 Range Rover Vogue SE.
    The car is a 4.4 AJV8, with the 6 Speed ZF box.
    This video is in no way a tutorial, and if you mess up your car its not my fault! I am an idiot...

    Just did diffs on my 2006 V8 petrol. Drain plugs on both diffs are 14mm hex. Fill plug on front is also 14mm hex. Fill on rear is 8mm hex. New drain plugs (oem ) come wrapped in a layer of pfte tape. This will wear off though - didn’t see any on old plugs. They are tapered threads so snug them up then torque to spec - in my case 54nm. I checked after a couple of days and they’re in there tight - no leaks. Before doing this job I’d recommend spraying the drain and fill with some WD40 penetrating spray and then go and have a cup of tea. Makes the job so much easier when not wrestling with welded on plugs. I also put some copper grease on the plugs when reinserting - not sure if you’re supposed to but I doubt it’ll do any harm. Torque to spec seems to be the best preventative e measure when you need to do the job next time.

    One tip always make sure you can undo the refill plug so you know you can refill before undoing the drain plug and draining the old oil out otherwise good video.

    Great vid Jason, our Freelander 2 had a similar diff whine, although louder, ended up with a reconditioned rear diff before it became terminal. Looking forward for the next chapter!

    On the positive side it didn't end up like a Just Rolled In video. Strongly recommend a decent pair of secondhand overalls if working on the ground.

    Also the fill plug doesn’t need to be super tight it’s only torqued to maybe 25nm I think. 👍🏾

    Just to advise because I am an expert on these sort of things "ONE GRUNT EQUALS 4 LB TWO GRUNTS IS ABOUT 6 LB AND THREE GRUNTS COVERS EVERYTHING " The more youswear
    the better because you know its right chineeese sockets and spanners are the best because they break befor you can over tighten anything which takes me back to Three Grunts
    hope that was helpful ?????????????

    When I was doing the diff oil in my CRV I got hold of a pump from the top of a large handwash, shouldn’t be difficult in times of hand sanitiser everywhere, and with a wee bit of clear hose to the fill plug just pumped it straight in.

    The whine may not be the diff could be a wheel bearing as it travels through the transmission, but I did hear these RRs did suffer with front diff whining, great vids keep going

    • @TyredFormat
      @TyredFormat  2 года назад

      Pretty sure it’s a diff, or the transfer box. It only whines under load (acceleration and deceleration). Got the oil to do the transfer box now. But given how much the front diff has leaked, wouldn’t be surprised if a lack of fluid had knackered it a bit!

  • @richardsutton01
    @richardsutton01 2 года назад +1

    The transfer box takes the same oil and is the easiest access of the three drive cases. I'm wondering why you didn't change that as well whilst you were under there? Good work on the interior wood veneer. I'm enjoying the videos as working with one hand is definitely not easy!

    • @TyredFormat
      @TyredFormat  2 года назад

      According to rimmers the TF case (at least on mine) takes different oil. I actually have the oil now but at the time of filming I didn’t, will change when there’s a gap in the gale force winds! Haha

    • @richardsutton01
      @richardsutton01 2 года назад

      @@TyredFormat That's interesting. Thanks for the correction. I've worked on/restored quite a few Land Rover models over the years and they have always used the same oil for all three cases although I've never worked on an L322 or anything newer than that.

    • @TyredFormat
      @TyredFormat  2 года назад

      Mines a weird year/spec so has a few mismatched bits. Som L322’s even have different fluid specs for front and rear diffs! All very confusing to say the least.

    • @marksoutherton8888
      @marksoutherton8888 2 года назад +3

      @@TyredFormat The transfer box could well be the cause of the whining when you reach 40mph. I had the same problem with mine at 40mph, not long after I bought it. I had quotes from garages saying that they THINK it's the front wheel bearings ? I wasn't convinced, so I decided to check things for myself. When I drained the transfer case it was nearly empty ? I filled it up and solved the problem 😀. When garages service a car it generally only includes engine oil, and nobody even bothers to checks the other oils 🤔 I thought that is what a service was for 🤔 (checking the vehicle) If you want something done properly, do it yourself. Great videos, Good Luck 👍
