Now that the iPad Air uses the 2nd generation Apple pencil it's hard to see the differences between the Air and the iPad pro. But now the Pro has that super powered M1 chip we have seen in the Macbooks and iMacs. The 12.9" Pro also has the Liquid Retina XDR display that uses mini LEDs in the screen. Does that make it that much better than the iPad air?

Also keep in mind the base iPad Air only has 64 gigs of storage while the Pro has 128. There's no 128 gig Air and the 256 gig + pencil goes for 880$ for but for 930$ you can get the 11' iPad pro and the Apple pencil. I feel the better specs are worth the extra 50$

Don't forget storage size! The $599 iPad Air is 64GB and it skips to 256GB which is $750. I would rather pay another $50 for the 11inch iPad Pro 128GB instead as it has enough space and better features than that of the iPad Air 256GB.

5:18 I went to BestBuy to test the sky blue iPad Air 4 in person. For additional reference, here's the layer limits I found for other canvas sizes in Procreate...
    3500 x 2625 (over 3K): max of 54 layers
    4096 x 2160 (standard for 4K movies): max of 56 layers
    4500 x 3375 (higher than standard 4K): max of 31 layers
    4900 x 6000: max of 14 layers
I set the DPI to 300 also which is really good for printing your work, and it had no affect on the layer limit. Hope this helps even more 😄

    • @k3nny111

DPI wouldn't impact performance; it's not a thing in digital spaces, and only describes the translation of digital to physical media. DPI is the density by which pixels are translated to printed media; 1920x1080 could be thousands of DPI when printed on a tiny area.

On my Galaxy S6 Lite I made detailed landscape drawings with layers as much as 200+ layers, and CSP wouldn't lag, it only affected how fast opening up the CSP file at the start is.

That was true for the 2018 1 tb iPad. I’m not sure why Apple would make that across the board on the 2020 if it didn’t allow some performance boost. Why add that extra 2gb of RAM to the 128gb mode if it does absolutely nothing.
Also for this years model. The jump is from 8gb to 16gb for the higher end models. No way 8gb is just to manage extra storage.

Let's just bring facts to the table.
The A14 on the iPad Air is more powerful than an average mid-range i5 laptop on the market, meaning that with an iPad Air you can easily compare its performance to that of even more expensive computers.
iPad OS, as far as it's a great tablet-optimized system, still cannot challenge Desktops in terms of professional productivity or gaming, unless you only use it for web browsing, documents, drawing or some iPad editing.
So the question is, if the A14 which is one of the best performing mobile chipsets is already "wasted" on the iPad, how can the desktop-level M1 chip be currently more useful on a tablet, when iPads like the Air 3 or the 8th gen with the A12 already offer a premium high end experience?
iPad OS needs a true desktop experience with desktop applications and productivity, the moment when I'll be truly able to completely replace my laptop with my iPad, I'll be able to say that I might look into buying an iPad Pro, until that moment, the Air already offers those premium features and performance to be a high end tablet an average user wants to buy.
That's of course my opinion, some people might say they want the promotion display, the extra speakers or mics, an ultrawide camera sensor and stuff like that, but again, that's still "mobile" features challenging, nothing to do with real "Pro" stuff.

He's had the iPad Air 3 with first-gen Apple Pencil for the past couple of years, and I was wondering if the iPad Air 4 would be a worthy upgrade for his birthday next week. But he actually balked at the lack of a home button, since he's so used to having one! And since the iPad Air 3 has very similar specs to the iPad 8th Gen, sounds like he can get quite a bit more use out of it.
I did want to give a quick shout-out to the iPad Mini, though. It's been a while since it was refreshed, but it's still rocking the same A12 Bionic and 3 GB of RAM as the iPad Air 3 and iPad 8th Gen, plus it has a fully laminated display with P3 wide color and a whopping 326 ppi resolution, and comes with 64 GB in the base model for $399.
Here's hoping Apple gives it a design makeover and a spec bump to the A14 in the coming months to keep it aligned with the iPad Air (as has been their custom in the past), but for those wanting a super portable tablet for quick sketches, it's still worth considering.

A lot depends on what storage capacity you're looking at. At 256GB, the 11" Pro is only 20% more than the Air (16% in the UK!). For that marginal price increase you get better performance, Face ID, a brighter display, double the memory, better front and rear cameras (with Centre Stage support), LIDAR, Thunderbolt, better speakers, thinner form factor. Total no-brainer.

11” m1 iPad Pro. I’m likely going to need that extra storage I can buy (i got mine at 512 gigs) with it that just doesn’t come on the Air. I also just really wanted to future proof myself and not limit myself to half the RAM that’s on the Air since I’ll also be partially using it as a laptop replacement for my uni course.

Ordered the new 12.9 iPad Pro because I just wanted the larger screen. If only they made an iPad Air at 12.9, that would have been perfect. I was planning to get a new Wacom Cintiq if they were to release new models this year, but with chips and (lesser extent) monitor panels shortage expected to go into 2022, I don't think any new models will be announced anytime soon. Still not convinced by Apple's ecosystem, long time Android + Windows user here. We will see whether I would change my mind.

Fantastic review. Thank you sir, finally a video that gave me confidence about choice for my first apple pencil compatible ipad. My main concern was that Air has a gap between pencil and screen below vs the Pro models. I tried the 8-gen at BestBuy and was really surprised how that doesnt really bother me. Going with iPad Air 10.2 (8-gen) 128gb tomorrow. Thank you sir.

I got the sky blue Air 4 when it was regularly going on discount in North American stores. After buying the Apple Magic Keyboard, I haven’t used any other windows computer or laptop for browsing or media consumption ever since. I do almost everything on the iPad. I definitely don’t need the new M1 iPad Pro but it looks really good. I hope the next gen 11in gets that Mini-LED technology everyone has been hyping up.

Thanks for the informative video, you just helped me to choose the iPAir4 over the 11”M1 iPPro - I have purchased them both and I guess it’s like you say, because I’m just a regular user (reading, research, RUclips, email, and occasionally streaming movies or tv programs) the technical differences are indistinguishable. I can’t even figure out what “promotion” is and why I personally should care lol. Coming from a 2017 iPadPro 9.7” (never used more than 38 gb of 128 gb storage) they are both equally awesome ~ so I’m going to save my money by sending the Pro back and enjoy my new iPAir4 (64gb). Please tell me what app you were drawing in - it looked like a you were out lining a digital coloring book (I’m not an artist but it looked like something I would enjoy using my new Apple Pencil for)

Made gripping the tablet easier, AND made drawing easier. And no, it's not matte, so my nibs will survive. Kinda funny that my reasoning for getting it over the Air was because i didnt want to buy screen protectors...oops

I’ve owned IPads. Galaxy Tabs. Cintiqs. Samsung Notebooks. And more. And for the price and convenience factor the IPad always wins. But I think that’s really to do with Procreate and the Apple Pencil. I own the base IPad and the 4th Gen IPad Pro currently and as long as I have the Apple Pencil and procreate it really doesn’t matter. It also makes buying the new IPad a tough sell because, as an artist, Procreate will fundamentally remain unchanged. Thunderbolt is probably the biggest addition here and maybe the opportunity to draw full screen on external monitor. Other than that I think Apple has reached the point where the IOS software can’t take advantage of the hardware, at least for many creative endeavors.

My girlfriend fell in love with my iPad Air 4. I want to get her one with the Apple Pencil. I can only afford the 64gb version.
Her usage is mainly drawing and doodling in Procreate. She also likes using the iPad for surfing the web, media streaming, Tumblr & Pinterest, and playing some games. Nothing too heavy duty. Is 64gb enough? She also has lots of cloud storage. She mainly uses her MacBook Air laptop or iPhone to store photos, videos and big files. The iPad will mostly be for streaming, sketching, surfing and a few games.
Is anyone using a 64gb iPad for similar use with good success? I’d rather spend the money on the pencil than leap $200 to 256, since she is an artist. I figure she can eventuality offload her larger drawings to the cloud or use external storage, if she needs to free up space.
    Thoughts?
