I think watching the movie Purple Rain helps put this song into perspective. It’s basically a big f u to a girl who played with his emotions. Of course it’s all perspective because he had his own issues to deal with too. But she is in the audience, he is singing to her to make her feel uncomfortable. He’s saying these things about her that aren’t necessarily true but he was hurt and wanted to hurt her back.
She made him sign a waiver so she wouldn’t be responsible if he got hurt. That’s some S&M shit. 😂
That was the actual song that the congressman's daughter was listening to and his wife heard it and that's why they came up with the parental stickers for the albums that is the song that started it all

I got this cassette when I was 12 on Christmas Eve. Listened to the tape front and back in my bed waiting for Christmas morning. I don't remember any of my presents, but I definitely remember hearing this tape for the first time.

A little context about the song. . In the movie Purple Rain, prince's character was jealous of Apollonia's relationship with Morris Day. This was his response to her on stage... he was kissing and telling...

The end of the song - when played in reverse - is Prince relaying a message of the second coming and the Lords return to Earth. Serious dichotomy in this song.

i was like 4/5 when this song came out and i had no idea what is was about but i loved it, and my mom didn't know what the lyrics were saying at first LOL on a different note, since you said Nikki was probably in the studio during this song, when Prince recorded Scandalous he was dating Kim Basinger and some of the folks who worked on the album at the time said they had to leave cause Prince pulled out some honey with her. apparently after everyone left him and Kim had sex in the studio and then they used some of the sounds as effects in the song LOL so who knows, "Nikki" may have been in the studio too.

This song is the reason why there are Parental Advisory stickers on explicit music. Yep. Tipper Gore (Al Gore's wife) bought the PURPLE RAIN soundtrack for her daughter, heard this song DARLING NIKKI, and decided to gather her political friends to form the PMRC (Parent Music Resource Center). Senate hearings occurred and both lawmakers and music execs decided to place those warning stickers on music that contained explicit content like sex, profanity, violence, etc.

The last part of the song sounded like backward masking it whatever they called it. Where it is played backwards. Need to take it and play it backawards to hear it play forewards to hear what it says. Lotsnofbold groups were known for hiding messages in songs through backwards masking. Lot of actual stuff and lots of myths of hidden subliminal messages in older songs.

So by the time they were pre-teenagers they were listening to other things and moving along with the music trends at the moment. And, the "ha ha ha" part of this song was sampled on 2Pac's HEARTS OF MEN from the ALL EYEZ ON ME album. And, the very ending of this song is actually in reverse with the message saying "Hello? How are U? Fine, fine. 'Cause I know that The Lord is coming soon. Coming, coming soon". Yep. The very end is a message about the return of Christ but in reverse (back then it was called backmasking). The ending part spook some overly religious folks who falsely accused Prince of devil worshipping when in fact he was encouraging folks to love and follow God. Back when this song was released, music with blatant religious messages were too taboo for pop radio. So, Prince found creative ways to encourage folks to turn to God. Other songs with spiritual messages from PURPLE RAIN also include LET'S GO CRAZY and I WOULD DIE 4 U. LET'S GO CRAZY is really about seeking God ("pursh 4 a higher floor") in order to beat the devil (aka the de-elevator). "Are we gonna let de-elevator break us down? Oh no! Let's go. Let's Go Crazy. Correct, back in the day on my Walkman when the tape came to the end of the batteries where getting low the tape wouldn’t auto switch to the Side b and it would start playing the same side backwards snd that’s how I discovered the actual words as your described (this only make sence if you had a Walkman and grew up in the early 80’s 😊)

This beautiful girl, way too young for me, like barely an adult woman, hit on me in the bathroom of a tattoo parlor in the mid 00’s. These kinds of things happened to me a lot when I was in my 20’s and still frequented such establishments; often with pleasant results😆In fact, these things happened to most lesbians in many establishments 🤣 But this never happened to me before w/ a girl who could have just graduated from high school the week before…at least not when I was 3/4 into the legal drinking years.🤣 And hand to the Bible, this song started playing. She was gorgeous, but it felt icky cause she was so young. And the bathroom was kind of gnarly🥴 She touched my face, and smelled my hair, saying “you’re so sexy”. I gently took her hands away from me and I said “You’re really beautiful, and I’m flattered, truly. But Darling Nikki, it’s gonna be a no.
