Filmic Pro VS MotionCam vs S22 Ultra vs OnePlus 10 Pro vs Pixel 6 Filmmaking Comparison

  • Does Filmic Pro or MotionCam deliver the best quality footage between the Samsung S22 Ultra vs OnePlus 10 Pro vs Pixel 6? I test all three devices and both apps to show you the cinematic b roll, how well each apps footage holds up with color grading in Davinci Resolve, and some of the issues with shooting RAW DNG video.
Filmic Pro is the leader in the field of third party mobile filmmaking apps, but it can't do one thing . . . film in RAW! MotionCam is new to many a mobile filmmaker, but the app allows you to film in RAW and convert your footage to Cinema DNG either from the mobile app or from the developer's desktop app linked here: github.com/mir...
The Samsung S22 Ultra, OnePlus 10 Pro, and Google Pixel 6 are top tier Android phones with excellent camera systems--but which is best in terms of mobile videography? After comparing multiple test shots and color grading each in Davinci Resolve, I'll tell you which I think is the winner, plus you can see the results for yourself!
We'll also look at some issues that come from filming in both apps. MotionCam raw is great, but the file sizes are huge, there's additional conversion time to DNG, and editing in Davinci Resolve might require converting to proxies. Filmic Pro has its own issues when shooting in 10 bit HEVC at the Filmic Ultra bitrate, and the Pixel 6 and S22 Ultra had issues. I have to say that the OnePlus 10 Pro camera testing was really impressive with both apps! If this was a S22 Ultra VS OnePlus 10 Pro camera comparison for mobile filmmaking the winner is pretty clear!

Well for me when I've seen MotionCam video samples from not even the most advanced smartphones, the image quality blow my mind. It was the first time I've ever seen a smartphone video really close to a MILC/DSLR quality. Even the best Filmic/McPro24 videos looks kinda cellphone-ish for me. I know its subjective in a lot of terms but I kinda think of MotionCam as: 'Remember how people started shooting films? Yes, in a very unreliable way, in very limited length, with lot of pre-pre-production neccesities' (thinking about physical film). So these first cameras were literally just like 'image recording boxes' And thas it, Nothing else. And thats what Motioncam makes out of your phone. And for me, its the greatest thing that could"ve happened to phone videography.
So what people call the downside-s of MotionCam i actually view as: Its just work.
Because - once again, for me - CAN really look like the bottom side of a higher quality/category and not the highest-side of cellphone quality/category.
Yes, its not for anything (i mean if you have a vlog and need videos ready by tomorrow, ofc its not really the best to go) but the work just really worths it.

Add to that the release of Blackmagic app for android.

Filmic can't save 10-bit files on 6 Pro. They are always 8-bit, even though you set 10-bit in Filmic. The h.265 L5.2 is perfectly fine for 4K video up to 120 fps.

  • @Emptrix

Very nice test methodology. The S22 Ultra's footage even with Samsung default video app has over sharpening, evident when I see those youtube 4k samples that other youtubers have uploaded. It's really only good at photography unless Samsung disables image processing in video mode since it screws with the footage (primarily over sharpening every single thing).

    • @phonecomp

@@phonecomp It's a software thing I think. Google made it possible for third party apps to use their image processing (like Snapchat adding night sight) but I believe that means the image coming from the Camera2 API (that Filmic Pro uses, as well as mcpro24fps) is different than normal.
Motioncam uses its own imaging pipeline and doesn't use that API, so is unaffected.
