Alistair Timmis was born in York, and for a time during childhood lived at Acomb Methodist Church where he took a great interest in the fine J.J. Binns organ and spent many hours learning the instrument, taking lessons from the late Malcolm Galloway of Tadcaster Parish Church. He played instruments across the city and denominations as a teenager, facilitating both a passion for and an understanding of church music in a variety of contexts. During sixth form years at Fulford, he was School Organist.
Alistair was Organist at All Saints, Mickleover, Derby from October 2012 until April 2019. Since July 2021, he has been Director of Music at All Saints’, Sherburn-in-Elmet, training and directing the choir as well as leading in the playing of the organ. Since October 2023, Alistair has been President of the York & District Organists’ Association, leading one of the largest and most successful IAO affiliated associations in the country. Organist to the Leeds based chamber choir, The Pusey Consort, Alistair thoroughly enjoys accompanying the liturgy, working in this way also with the Heritage Singers. As of 2024, Alistair has also commenced a conducting scholarship with Masterworks Chorale under the tutelage of local composer, Tim Knight.
Alistair is the York Local Ambassador for the Cathedral Music Trust and has recently been nominated as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. Having obtained the RSCM Church Music Skills Award in liturgical organ playing with distinction, Alistair continues to further his vocational commitment in this area. Recent concert appearances include Old Malton Priory, Mill Hill Chapel - Leeds, St Peter’s, Horbury and Leeds Minster.
