New for June of 2024, Mark Herman performs a digital concert on the Tahoma Studio Wurlitzer in Washington State. This is the premiere recording of this marvelous private theatre organ installation.

Mark's usual super talented excellence in performance and fantastic choice of songs! It's always so good to hear an organist who is clearly putting emphasis on the music rather than technique, even while being superior in the latter department.
Fantastic organist, great music, wonderful organ in an ideal setting what more could anyone ask for. I play this with my vintage Hi-Fi, closed my eyes and it was just like being there.

Anyone know what happened to the instrument that was built and installed at the organ grinder in Toronto? We went there when I was 8 or 9 and got hooked then. When we went back to Niagara Falls years later and we did a day trip to Toronto but it was already gone. Someone told me it was purchased and installed in private home.
My toddler son was astounded when he would hear that organ. We loved to eat there.

Jerry Gould and Greg Smith did a fantastic job rescuing the Greenwood Pizza & Pipes organ and reinstalling & expanding it in Jerry's barn. I never heard the 32' rank that was removed from the barn, but I understand that Mark Herman acquired that gem rank.

I got the impression from part of your talk about the organ that this organ still operates on original relay equipment, correct? From the PSTOS entry about this installation I read: "There is nothing electronic about it, no solid-state, digitized anything. This is completely acoustic!" Is it indeed an original relay it utilizes? Excellent recording. Thank you for sharing it.
Another great concert Mark! Loved the Cole Porter segment. I am wondering if in the near future, you would mind playing “Our Love Affair” from the 1957 Academy Award nominated “An Affair To Remember”. It was played throughout the movie, usually using an organ as the primary instrument. I would love to hear you play it in one of these magnificent theatre organs.

nice organ, nice playing. I love the donkeys. I hope they can hear and enjoy the music. I trust they have a good and loving home. Would love to play this organ, but , alas, im hundreds of miles away. Mostly in the Twilight Zone.

Is this instrument seriously on its original EP relays? If so, then that is awesome. Wish more Wurlitzers retained their original relays.
So do I. When the video first showed the console I saw the pistons and stop rail and was immediately hopeful it might be original or relatively original. A precious rarity these days.
At 11:40, Mark says this instrument is "lightning fast" with its original pneumatic relays.
Why would these be faster than modern solid-state-relays?
I’m pretty sure the point is that the original EP relays, when properly adjusted, can be fast enough to not be any kind of problem for playability. The better solid-state relays are still faster than EP, but not by enough to really matter. There are also some worse solid-state relays that can be slower than EP in certain situations.
Listen to the remarkable recordings made by Robert Wolfe at Thursford. That organ still uses its original pneumatic relays. At times, Wolfe plays at an astonishing speed, moving faster than a blink of an eye. His fingers dance over the manuals with incredible agility and dexterity.
What is striking is how perfectly the original relays keep up with his rapid playing. I have witnessed similar performances on other instruments with original pneumatic relays, and they handle the speed without any issues. This reliability is a testament to the design and engineering of these traditional instruments.
On the other hand, I have seen instruments equipped with solid-state relays struggle to keep pace. When it comes to digital instruments, the situation often worsens. They frequently drop notes, failing to maintain the performance quality. This contrast highlights the effectiveness of original pneumatic technology in supporting fast and dynamic playing. Robert Wolfe's performances illustrate this perfectly, showcasing the strengths of traditional organ mechanisms.
Kudos to the owner for keeping it pneumatic. Love it when then the zepher skins get a workout !

There’s a sostenuto switch on the swell shoe that sustains the Great manual while activated.…A nice trick found on many theatre organs!

How many ranks? By the looks of the stoprail it seems like around 16 but sounds like more thanks to great registration technique.

This the organ from the Bellevue Pizza and Pipes isn't it? I drive by the location every day. That same old brown office building is there right next to the street they built where the Pizza and Pipes location was. A real shame.
The Bellevue organ went to an amusement park in North Idaho and was used for a few seasons. It later went to Southern Idaho, where part of it was sold and the remainder remains in repose. This organ played in Greenwood.
How does he hold that note at 517 without any hands?
There is a "sostenuto" kick switch on the middle swell pedal that I engage with my right food. A handy device!

"Lover Come Back To Me" was especially FANTASTIC!!! I love Simon's arrangement, but you may have topped it, Mark! Fabulous!!! This piece is a sentimental torch song for many of us, and you tugged at all of the heartstrings with that arrangement.
